1 ISSUE: JUNE 2018 COORDINATOR S REPORT Welcome to winter NHC ers! It s the time for layering-up, enjoying comfort food AND KICKING THE FOOTY!! As an organisation, we re so thrilled to be welcoming the best AFL players from around Australia to Launceston this month to play in the National AFL Inclusion Carnival. Personally for our athletes, the opportunity to play at home is particularly special, as they can enjoy the support of friends and family. I d encourage you to make sure you get out, catch a few games and cheer on all of the terrific young men who ll be proudly representing their states. Our dear friend and one of our founders, Ted Gleeson, would have been at these matches with bells on. Ted was farewelled at the North Launceston Football Club at York Park last month after falling ill very suddenly a few weeks before; we miss him dreadfully. It was an honour to learn more about Ted s brilliant football career at his service and I know you will enjoy reading about it here too (Ted was so humble; he kept many of his past achievements to himself!). Inside this issue: Coordinator s Report Sports Schedule & Points tally NHC Events Club News People Places Calendar Save the Date AFL Inclusion Carnival 19 th 23 rd June, Launceston Gala Dinner October - TBC It s been a tough few months, with the loss of several much-loved members of New Horizons in Our thoughts are very much with their families, but we d also like to remind our wider New Horizons family that there is help around if you find yourself struggling with loss. Talking with trusted friends or your GP is a great place to start getting helpful advice on coping in hard times. Good friends are like stars, you can t always see them, but you know they re always there. This is so true, and we are blessed at New Horizons to be surrounded. 3 AFL Inclusion Carnival 19 th 23 rd June In just our fourth year organising a Tas State Rep Team to participate in the National AFL Inclusion Carnival, it s still hard to believe that Launceston has been bestowed with the honour of hosting the actual even; we are SO excited! From June 19 th 23 rd, Launceston will host over 160 athletes and crew who will play in the Lightning Carnival, attend various social functions and conduct workshops with local support school students. The week then culminates with the Grand Final being played as the curtain-raiser to the AFL Hawkes V s Suns game at UTAS Stadium. This is all thanks to a partnership with City of Launceston, Tourism Northern Tasmania, New Horizons Club, and AFL Tasmania. More than half of team Tasmania will be formed of New Horizons athletes, and we encourage as many locals as possible to get out and support not only our great friends and players in their games, but also all our visiting athletes. Let s make this a week to remember for every single person taking part! AFL Sponsors 2018 Despite our athletes not having to travel this year to take part in the AFL Inclusion Carnival, there are many extra costs associated with hosting this great event! New Horizons Club would like to express special thanks to the following brilliant local businesses for supporting our elite Tasmanian footballers with intellectual disability, and the event as a whole: Platinum partner: Bendigo Bank Gold Partners: Play Sport Enterprises (the Swallow family) Jacksons Security Silver Partners: TP Jones Bolands IGA, Newnham Page Transport (the Boland family) Bronze: Burnie Auto Plant (the Marthick family) To all our members and friends, we know how much you love supporting businesses who support New Horizons Club. Do keep our AFL partners in mind when you re next in the market for the services they provide!

5 Call out for Volunteers.. During the Inclusion Carnival the Club will be providing lunches to all teams, providing Match Managers, timekeepers and scoreboard attendants. Don t miss an opportunity to help out at this fantastic week of passionate football by our athletes. Can you spare an hour or two, a day, anything. Call the office now on or us. We d love to hear from you! BREAKING NEWS from Melbourne We are so proud and thrilled to announce that on Saturday 26 th May at Cricket Australia's National Community Cricket Awards, New Horizons was named as the 2018 Partner Organisation of the Year! Wow! We are passionate about our cricket program which has been running for many years now, and to be recognised at a national level is a huge and unexpected honour. Thanks so much to our incredible athletes, coaches and supporters (many of which are volunteers). Thanks also to New Horizons partners, Commonwealth Bank for being the major sponsors of these terrific awards, which acknowledge and celebrate community cricket. We love working so closely with Cricket Tasmania and are looking forward to another cracking cricket season starting again soon. North East News Here is a snap shot from our regular Monday Program held each week at Scottsdale. The program commenced with the usual fitness session, followed by a 3 x 5 team relay using bean bags. Basketball skills session rounded out a great program of fun! Vicki Forsyth Bunnings BBQ A huge THANK YOU to all our wonderful volunteers who gave a hand at the Bunnings Barbeque last weekend. A big shout out to John from Rotary Club of Launceston, Rosemary Armitage and the crew from Gallagher Australia who came on board to help cook. With so many of our club friends busy and away over the weekend, we were hugely grateful!
6 Ted Gleeson - a Sporting Life! Most of our members and friends at New Horizons knew Ted Gleeson as a dear mate and Volunteer Extraordinaire, and more importantly, Joel s Grandpa. A few even knew that Ted was instrumental in actually establishing New Horizons back in 1986 with Robyn Hanson. But not many of we young ones knew the extent of Ted s sporting achievements. These were shared by son-in-law Steve Ockerby in Ted s obituary, and we thank Steve, Ted s daughter Robin, and his Grandchildren Justin, Louise and Joel for allowing us to share just a little of Ted s incredible sports journey: Ted s love for sport began growing up kicking the footy in South Melbourne, and continued through until 2018, playing Master s Cricket and cycling. In 1952 he was selected as goalie for the Victorian u/17 team. During this time his cricket career also began, and in an underage competition he took 7-1 bowling leg spin. Ted complained that the only run came when a catch was dropped in slips! Ted joined South Melbourne Football Club in 1953 and over the next few seasons moved up through the ranks from the Fourths to the Seconds, winning several goal kicking awards. In 1954 Ted also played Sunday football with Albert Park Surfers Football Club. Ted's mother forbade the playing of sport on the Sabbath and Ted would have to make up an excuse to leave the house. To get out of the house with his footy gear, Ted s dad used to sneak out the back with it and hand it to Ted as he walked out the front! The flaw in his plan was that Ted always had to play after just eating a full Sunday roast In 1956 he played in the Seconds Grand Final at the MCG as a curtain raiser to the seniors. The crowd that day is listed as almost 116,000, with a reported 20 to 30,000 turned away. During those years Ted also played senior level cricket with Prahran Amateurs and had a season with Coburg Sub- District. In 1957 Ted played in the Bendigo League, on loan from South Melbourne. A player profile appeared in the Bendigo Football Guide which stated, "Ted Gleeson: Forward - has a very fast lead and is the best punt kick in the Bendigo League. He is a motor mechanic, is single, but only until October 5". In 1958 Ted played with Yarraville in the VFA and topped their goal kicking. After the season finished he and Lois (Ted s late beloved wife) moved to Launceston, and so began Ted's long association with North Launceston Football Club. His arrival caused quite a stir in local football circles. A report, with accompanying photo, in The Examiner in March 1959 began with, "Ted Gleeson, Yarraville full-forward last season, greatly impressed North Launceston officials and supporters when he had his first training run with the Robins at York Park last night... He was the centre of interest from the time he was accompanied onto the field by North's secretary to be officially introduced to coach Jack Hawksley, until training finished". Ted played cricket with North Launceston in the NTCA in the summer of 1958/59 but finished the season early when he and Lois prepared to move into their first home. Ted & his nephew Chris Lucas North Launceston Team Mascot In 1960 Ted kicked 96 goals, including 29 goals in two weeks, and in 1961 played in their premiership team. After three years with North, Ted moved on, to become playing coach of Perth in the Esk Association for two years. Ted returned for two more years with North, then two years with Kings Meadows in the Esk Association. Ted was now working as a National Fitness Officer. His job now came with many weekend commitments and so, not surprisingly maybe, given his level of dedication to anything he was involved with, Ted retired from football at the end of the 1968 season. Football s loss was Tas Sport & Rec s gain - not to mention, the future organisation of New Horizons. Vale Ted; a humble, wonderful man who made a difference to so many, and whose passion for sport was infectious.

Pop in sometime and take a peek at our developing new area it s very exciting! Introducing Maryann and Doris Hello, my name is Maryann and I have been a trained pastoral care worker for 6 years, volunteering on the Melwood Unit with the Specialist Palliative Care Service. I recently attended a Therapy Dog Course in Victoria with my two year old purebred Minature Schnauzer Doris. The course was held over 5 days. We were able to discuss the different needs of clients who were in distress and how we would be able to help them in times of need by using therapy dogs. Doris being such a small dog is able to lie quietly beside patients/clients giving them respite from everyday sadness, loneliness and fear. Therapy animals sometimes give people the chance to speak when they would not normally do so. A friend in the times when there is no-one else. (Maryann is a volunteer at New Horizons Club Junior Song & Dance Program)
