1 ISSUE: APRIL 2017 COORDINATOR S REPORT Well, we knew March would be full-on, and as we re about to cross the month s finish line, I think we can all agree that it didn t disappoint! One of the highlights was our inaugural Stadium Step-Up Challenge. It was such a wonderful day, and one of those many occasions where I am yet again simply blown away at the physical and mental resilience and determination of our members. In fact, there are a lot of people who attended on the day who will never forget watching as Jacquie Spencer took on the Spartacus Challenge- an incredible 13 laps of UTAS Stadiumand succeeded! Jac was one of only 7 people who attempted this feat. Incredible stuff, and this is but one amazing story to come from the day. I was able to drop by for half an hour and loved being able to catch up with so many members of my New Horizons family. As of now, I m on maternity leave, with Nathan and I getting to enjoy our family of three. Thanks so much for the lovely messages; they mean a lot to us! In my absence, Edwina and Vanessa will continue to ensure that New Horizons not only runs smoothly day-to-day, but that we continue to grow and thrive. You can contact Ness with any operational matters, and Edwina with anything that requires the attention of Interim Manager. Before I sign off, I d just like to extend a huge thanks to the Commercial Traveller s Association of Tasmania Committee. You ll remember that we were the beneficiary of a sizeable donation from the CTA last year, enabling us to give our clubroom a major makeover? Well, just this week we have received another $5,000 from this generous group, as they wind down the Association. This has been a huge surprise and means that we immediately have half the funds required to fix our floors. Thank you CTA! Now, go forth and have a cracking April. I look forward to hearing regular news from the Club and catching up soon! Yours in Sport, Rec and nappies! 3 GREAT WESTERN TIERS CYCLE CHALLENGE Over 300 riders took part in our Western Tiers Cycle Challenge today on a glorious sunny day, including members Paul and Rupert Grayston on their tandem bike and Justin Nilon who completed over 52 kms! Bec Riedl, Jutta and Hermann all completed their chosen course and Congratulations to John O May who also nailed the 52 km circuit great to have you back in the saddle Once again we were graced with great support from Youngtown Rotary members, Ulyssees Motorcycle Club and NHC Club volunteers working together to deliver a wonderful event. Bravo to Kerry Finch for once again manning the microphone. Huge thanks to Robyn Hanson, Leah Page, Andrea Bailey-Worford, Donna & Nicole Furfaro, Dom Vittori for the very early morning roll and food preparation Sue, Greg & Matt Bowen and Robin Green for another yummy bbq Leanne Arnott, Adam & Maddie Symons for rider registrations Olwyn Nilon distributing rider lunches and Laurie Farrell for all the odd jobs and help on and before the day Katherine Symons for starting duties and Edwina for media support and odd jobs on the day Committee members Greg Mitchell, Chris Westlake, Jan Beams, Steve Ockerby, Ruth Symons, Paul Connolly, Belinda Kitto A great team ensures a great event and experience for all! Well done one and all.
4 STADIUM STEP UP- A BIG PAT ON THE BACK! Our inaugural Stadium Step-Up is now done and dusted, and what an awe-inspiring day it was! Marvellous NHC peeps and members of the public gathered at UTAS Stadium on Sunday the 19 th to take part in the stair climb challenge and the flat inclusive circuit, all set to a great sound track. As well as raising over three thousand dollars for NHC, the event has really put our organisation on the map in Launnie. With LAFM radio and WIN TV advertising campaigns, radio interviews on Chilli, LAFM and ABC, and even a story on the front page of the Examiner, we are sure more locals than ever have now heard the New Horizons name. It s out there in a much bigger way. We ve also solidified great relationships with our generous major event partners: City of Launceston, LAFM, WinTV, Hogs Breath Launceston, Fit Up and University of Tasmania Stadium. On a final note, Stadium Step-Up was only possible due to the dedication of star volunteers, Lorna Wilson and Casey Mainsbridge. These two gave up many hours during the last six months to lead the event and operations planning; a simple thank-you feels rather inadequate to what they (and their families) gave to Step-Up, but we ll say it anyhow; thank you Lorna and Casey! They were joined in the lead up and on the day by Will Gregory, Sarah Cocker of Westpac, Ruth Symons, Ness Wyllie, Danielle Morgan, Sue and Greg Bowen, Jan Spencer, & Olywn Nilon. To these terrific NHC family members, as well as to all who took part; we say a huge thank you. You made this wonderful day possible! Now on to

If you were a subject last year, you are more than welcome to participate again, but please be aware that if we have more subjects than photographers who enter, then preference will be given to members who have not yet participated. Let Edwina know asap so we can sort early. Picture Us All 2017 will open at Sawtooth Gallery on September 1 st. NEWSLETTER - how do you like yours? We currently distribute hard-copy newsletters to most NHC members, as well copies to others (and starting this month we will begin publishing the link on Facebook also). With the aim of becoming more environmentally friendly, and to save some money on postage costs, we are aiming to reduce the number of newsletters printed and posted. If you aren t finding your printed version useful, and would prefer to have the newsletter ed or to use the Facebook link please let us know on info@newhorizonsclub.org.au or calling the office. Katherine Symons steps right up! One of our most dedicated members, Katherine Symons, really pulled off something extra special (aside from doing 3 laps of steps) at Stadium Step-Up. Katherine raised almost $800 in sponsorship for the event- making her our number one fundraiser! Congratulations to Katherine, who has been awarded with a $150 gift voucher from stylish active wear outfitters, FitUp.
