ISSUE: April 2018 COORDINATOR S REPORT Welcome to Autumn crew! Rain showers one s spirit and waters one s soul it is said. Well, it also managed to drench a whole bunch of eager cyclists who were ready to hit the road in the 2018 Western Tiers Cycle Challenge. After such incredible weather for the last few years, it does feel only fair to be rained out once in a while. It makes us extra appreciative of the amazing community spirit that rallies behind this event. Thank you so much to our incredible cycling community, event committee, volunteers and of course sponsors. We WILL be back next year. While I speak of support and fundraising, it really is more important than ever, and we are so grateful for it. As we approach June 2019, our funding is scheduled to cease (this amount funds 1.5 salaries, and essentially keeps the doors open). The intention is that New Horizons will from then on operate as an NDIS associated business. In simplest terms, this is a particularly interesting proposition, as many of our members are not supported by NDIS plans, and sport activity is not NDIS funded. We are by no means the only organisation in a very challenging situation. Our staff and Board are spending many hours on strategy planning and we have a terrific dialogue with our state government; you will hear more about this over the course of the year, and you ll also notice us ramping up our fundraising out of necessity. With our current situation in mind, we have decided to host a formal Gala later on in We re very excited, and rest assured, will share the date with you ASAP! By now I m guessing you ve all heard the wonderful news about Launceston hosting the National Inclusion AFL Carnival. If you have free time during the week of June 18 th and 23 rd and would like to volunteer some time in assisting with operations, catering or more, please do drop us a line. Launceston will also be hosting the Tasmanian Boccia Titles on Saturday 21 st and Sunday 22 nd at Newstead College. This is a great chance to see our Boccia champions in action; make sure catch a session! Have a great month and embrace that rain and all that it gives us Belinda Kitto Manager Inside this issue: Coordinator s Report Sports Schedule & Points tally NHC Events Club News People Places Calendar Save the Date AFL Inclusion Carnival 18 th 23 rd June Launceston International Entertainment Australia s RAZZAMATAZZ Tues 24 th April at 2 pm at the Door of Hope Free Children s First Foundation tickets are available from the office. 3 2018 Buckby Motors Western Tiers Cycle Challenge Sunday March 25 th will go down as one of the wettest, wildest Cycle Challenge days in the event s history. So much in fact, that only 5 exceptional riders made it on to the road and incredibly, completed 120km. All other rides were cancelled due to safety concerns. The atmosphere at Prospect Park was nothing short of inspirational as despite the weather, every single volunteer arrived (in the dark!) to set-up. Our cyclists soon began rocking up too, ready to go, but happy to patiently wait and see what the day would deliver. Sponsors chatted to participants, locals dropped in donations and everyone was so grateful for the last-minute presence of the Coffee Devil Van! Huge thanks to all our crew (a dream-team committee made up of New Horizons and Youngtown Rotary stalwarts), to Kerry Finch for hosting the event yet again, Ulysses Motorcyclists, and of course to the events financial sponsors: Buckby Motors, The INTAS Group, RSAC, Finney Family Services, Wilson Homes and Becks Timber & Hardware. It was these businesses who made the 2018 Cycle Challenge possible (until mother-nature gleefully intervened). We re also incredibly grateful to Foot & Playsted, Southern Cross Television, the Meander Valley Council and Avanti Plus and all the other organisations who consistently lend a huge hand. Thanks also to the generous souls who were not able to ride on the day, but were very happy to leave their registration fee as a donation to New Horizons and Youngtown Rotary project - what a big difference that made to the bottom line! This year was never going to be the same without John O May and Tony Benneworth on the road, but no doubt they would have been proud. Winner of our Best Retro kit, Ian Leighton, with Cycle Challenge Committee member, Steve Ockerby.! A trusty Ulysses guardian angel!

to Flossy Kitto 1 year old on the 23 rd of March! FOR MIND A ND BODY Yogability Tasmania will be presenting a 6 week program to introduce the benefits of yoga and corrective exercise to assist with the management of stress and anxiety. This program will be open to all abilities and can cater for a maximum of 10 students. All Yoga mats and props will be supplied. Comfortable clothing and a water bottle is all you need to attend. Calling for expressions of interest in Yoga Therapy Are you interested in joining a Yoga class at New Horizons on either Monday afternoons or Thursday afternoons. Please contact the office by phone or and help us to get this great opportunity off the ground.

What s been happening in Craft..? Easter is approaching and in Craft we ve been hopping to it making Bunny and Button creations, as well as papier mache piñatas. Except for the woodworkers involved in our partnership with Launceston Church Grammar School who are creating their themed Gumball machines.

Can you help? Bunnings bbq Saturday 26 th May We are running the bbq at Bunnings on and are looking for people to help cook, serve, prepare, set-up and pack-up. If you have a couple of hours to spare please call or the office to secure your spot on the roster. Inner Wheel On Monday 19 th March we were honoured to host a group of members from Inner Wheel s Launceston Chapter for dinner. Not only did our catering committee have the pleasure of their company, but we were handed a cheque for $800 to put towards our 2018 programs! We thank the Inner Wheel not only for this generous donation, but also for their continuous support of New Horizons and our members over the years. They are great friends of ours! Thank you also to our great volunteers on the night Robyn, Danni, Sue, Ruth, Katherine, Brad and Mel for their cooking, hosting and speaking skills!

Our community will misses him greatly, and on March 25th we wished he was on the road with us. Our thoughts are with the Benneworth family.
