1 ISSUE: December 2018 / January 2019 COORDINATOR S REPORT To our New Horizons Family, I would like to start this December newsletter by wishing you all a beautiful Christmas and holiday season (not starting for a few weeks, I know - but I hope you are looking forward to it!). I hope to see many of you at our barbie in person to share in some festive spirit, but to those who can t make it, we ll be thinking of you! It has been an unusually tough year at the Club, and there are some very loved members of our big family who we just could not have anticipated would no longer be with us this December. John, Louise, Robbie, Ted, Katherine and Laurie and their loved ones will be in our hearts as we celebrate, that s for sure. We also have members and friends who have lost close family recently too, and who we will think of this Christmas. It s our members who are at the heart of our organisation and you have all made us so proud this year with your support of one another, as well as your many personal and sporting achievements. As you turn up week after week for training, and travel the state and country (and overseas!) to compete in your chosen sports, as well as host visiting sports-people here at home, you have been the most incredible ambassadors for New Horizons. For those of you taking part in our rec programs like Art & Craft and Song & Dance, wow - what a group of talented, fun people we are lucky enough to share time with! I know I speak for our instructors Ruth, Janice, Melissa and Maryanne too when I say that these sessions bring as much delight to us as to our participants. 4 North East News Hi All! This photo was taken one morning when we went for a foreshore stroll in the more senior group. Recently our entire group went to the Launceston Entertainment Centre where we all enjoyed the activities that they provided. Golf and Trampolines were the most popular. We also had a fun afternoon at the stadium with activities, including the egg and spoon race, while blowing a party blowout, three-legged race, basketball dribbling around cones, Relay teams of 4, skipping rope race, and finishing with no winners but all grinners. Regards Vicki Forsyth Social Dinner & Karaoke Last month an enthusiastic bunch rocked out at Rockin Hot Pizza on the Karaoke after an enjoyable meal together at our Social Club. Save the date for our next dinner and join us in 2019 on, Wednesday 6 th February Thursday 4 th April Friday 21 st June North West Christmas Party The North West Branch invites you to their Christmas Party at Upper Burnie Sports Stadium on Wednesday 12 th December pm. Please rsvp to the NHT Office by Friday 7 th December. PS wear/ bring your sneakers! 5 A New Look for New Horizons thanks to Stream Design! So - be honest have you noticed that we have a new logo and a slightly new name? Or did it slip by you? Our lovely new logo is certainly more of a refresh than a re-design and we are really thrilled with it. Keeping our sunbeams has meant retaining the sense of optimism and welcome so many of us loved about our past logo, but our New Horizons Tasmania font is now a little more clear to the eye and contemporary. Perfect for where we stand now as an Inclusive State-wide Sport and Rec group! The person behind our new logo is Kate Stokes of Stream Design (also adored Aunty of Tommy and Harry Colgrave), who along with Stream Manager Anita Pava, donated many hours of design work. As a team over several months they came up with over twenty (yes TWENTY) fabulous new logo proposals for New Horizons, and demonstrated the most incredible patience as time after time, we felt that something wasn t QUITE right. You guessed it - we were missing our sunbeams, we just didn t realise it! Thanks so very much to the Stream team for their dedication, generosity and kindness while working with us - they must have been as relieved as we were when a decision was finally made! Soon you ll see a new website and notice new banners and signage (also created by Stream). We are very grateful to have received a Healthy Tasmania grant which has made the production of these essential new marketing materials possible. Thank you to Lusy Productions for our new video! If you weren t at the Gala, and aren t on facebook, you may have missed our new New Horizons video clip, starring some of our members! This video was produced at a heavily discounted rate by Scott Atkins of Lusy Productions. We really appreciated this generosity and enjoyed getting to know Scott too. Thanks also to Rachel and Finn Hilder, Beth Grayson and Justin Nilon for giving their time to be interviewed about their involvement with us. To view the video (also made with funds from a marketing grant from Healthy Tasmania), go to You Tube (youtube.com) and type New Horizons Tasmania in the search space. Enjoy!

7 AGM and Strategy Planning Thanks so much to our members who attended our Annual General Meeting on November 29th, and to those who stayed on for Strategic Planning. It was fantastic to have the session led by Jacynta and Leigh from the Department of Communities, Sport and Recreation, who used the results of our members survey as the basis for our work. Stayed tuned for updates! TAV s TAS INCLUSION SHIELD - Match 1 rained out! Our Northern Cricketers were confident as they headed down to Hobart for the first match against the South the inaugural Tav s Tas only to be rained out! Instead of a game, all cricketers moved indoors and took part in a terrific skills session, as well as getting to know some new Southerners too! We ve now got our eye on Match 2 BREAKING NEWS.
