1 ISSUE: NOVEMBER 2018 COORDINATOR S REPORT Wow. It s the week after our Hudson Civil Field of Dreams Gala, and as I type this, I m still smiling. Not only did we raise valuable funds for our 2019 programs, but we were able to share the achievements of our members and athletes with people new to our community - all while enjoying a fantastic, celebratory night! Inside this issue: Coordinator s Report Sports Schedule & Points tally NHC Events Club News People Places Calendar We were thrilled to have our Ambassador Don Elgin join us from Victoria and conduct a fascinating On the Couch session, interviewing our own Australian cricketer, Justin Nilon and Olympic swimming legend, Shane Gould. I d like to express my heartfelt thanks to Donny and Shane, and Jo Palmer our wonderful MC for the evening, for their generosity in giving of themselves, and their precious time to contribute hugely to making the night such a success. Also my thanks to Warren Johnston, our Auctioneer extraordinaire, and the wonderful Luke Parry. A big thank you, also to our partners Commbank for attending and supporting our event this year. To Dom Vittori and Colleen Wood; thanks seems an understatement! With the help of Robin Green, Dom and Colleen are our Event production dream-team, and without their creativity and many hours of work, our Gala s wouldn t exist. To Ruth and Chris Symons who worked all night at the event managing balloon sales and auctions we just could not have done it without you, thank you so very much. To our volunteers who helped on the evening before, on the day, and on the day at Tailrace, your help was invaluable- thank you friends! To Lauren and her team at the Tailrace thank you so much for your passion and professionalism. What a delight it was to work with this crew! To every single prize donor- it is your generosity that ensured funds were raised. We are so grateful. Save the Date Annual General Meeting pm, to be followed by Club Strategic Planning Forum pm. 4 Dinner Club Last month s Dinner Club was held at Rocking Hot Pizza - it was a lovely girls night at a super venue. If you couldn t make it last month come and join us as we are booked in on Friday 16 th November for dinner from 7.00 pm and karaoke to follow after dinner until pm. Please call the office on to reserve your spot at the table! Rocking Hot Pizza, shop 8 Quadrant Plaza, 94 York Street at 7.00pm, ending around 10.00pm. Please call the NHC office to book your spot at the table! Rotary Bed Race On a recent glorious Sunday morning, several adventurous New Horizons Club members took up the riotous challenge of the Rotary Bed Race. The atmosphere at this event was one of pure fun and excitement... and inclusion! Even the St John Ambulance officer had a go at the gumboot toss! Any teams who appeared to be even slightly serious or competitive were soon relegated to the back of the pack. So, when it came to the Bed Race, our very own Jacqui Spencer sat upright and held on to the rails, to be wheeled around the UTAS circuit, in a hospital bed. These beds have incredible steering - not! We laughed all the way round, to finish a respectable 3rd. Our utmost respect and appreciation goes to each and every member of Rotary, who have hearts of gold and made the morning such an enjoyable memory. The good news is that our friendly Rotarians will be hosting the Bed Race again next year! I hope the club can get on board once more for some absolutely side-splitting fun. Coaches we need your nominations for Champion and Merit Awards for 2018 calendar year by 31 st January. Keep your eye out for who you will nominate over the last weeks of training.
5 Gala Dinner So good to see so many Club members at the Gala dinner and thanks for the phone calls from others that couldn't make it. It was a real privilege for me to interview Justin Nilon and Shane Gould on the night. I think Justin did a great job sharing the messages with all in attendance about what it means to represent his State and the incredible value he gets from being a member. I often get asked by people what is New Horizons Club like, my response is always the same, it is a beautiful community of people who all share a desire to make the most of opportunities. It is a place all members can belong and be their best. It was great to share this message with the wider community at the recent Gala. I look forward to joining you all again soon. Don Elgin New Horizons Ambassador Future planning for NHT we need your input! The Manager and Board are commencing to plan the future direction for New Horizons Tasmania and are seeking your input. We are looking for feedback from all our members, families, volunteers, partners and supporters so our future planning can be relevant and represent our community's needs accurately. To assist this process we ask everyone to complete a survey online at Hard copies of this survey, if required, are available by contacting Leigh Oswin at Communities, Sport and Recreation: leigh.oswin@communities.tas.gov.au This survey will close at 12 noon on Thursday 22 November If anyone needs support or assistance to fill out the survey please contact us at the office, we would be only too happy to help. Survey results and further planning work will be presented at an open forum on Thursday 29 November 2018 at the Mowbray Club ( Invermay Road, Mowbray) from 6.00 pm, after the Annual General Meeting, which commences at 5.30 pm. All members and stakeholders are encouraged to attend. Dinner will be provided - please rsvp by Monday 26th November to info@newhorizonsclub.org.au or call the office on Thank you for your participation.
