1 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2018 Sherwood Silent Auction! Come bid on great items, find a holiday gift, and unique treasures on Thursday, Oct a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Kensington Room Do you make crafty-crafts? Want to free up some space? Do you have (new or gently used) items that you no longer need? Donate them to Activities starting Oct. 5, or we ll pick them up on Oct. 9 Shots available for flu season Although no one likes to think about getting a shot, getting the flu has the potential to be much worse. Sherwood Assisted Living is once again providing a Flu Shot Clinic available for residents Tuesday, October 16 at 10 a.m. in the Activity Room. Sherwood offers the flu clinic each year as a convenience to the residents as a way to help the residents stay healthier through the winter months. There is a consent form to sign. Forms have already been mailed to people who receive medical assistance through a Power of Attorney. A small number of people who do get the shot sometimes have some mild discomfort. There may be a bit of soreness in the arm where the shot is administered, or a very slight fever. A person cannot get the flu from the shot. The shot is not mandatory, however this is something people can do as an added precaution. When seniors get the flu, they are at higher risk for serious complications and hospitalization. It s better to get the shot than risk getting the flu. The goal is for people to stay healthy so they are able to enjoy a quality lifestyle and all the activities that take place. Activities will collect funds on Friday, Oct. 12 and take the money raised for donation to the North Olympic Peninsula 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer s on Saturday, Oct. 13 in Port Angeles. In search of birds The Parliament of Owls headed out to Dungeness Landing County Park to catch a glimpse of the local birds. Birding expert Bob Boekelheide shared information about birds and the history of the local area. October 2018 The Sherwood Like to Know 1
2 Resident Council elects new president at next meeting Council President Esther Lake is ready to turn over the reins to another resident. The announcement came during the September Resident Council meeting. The meeting participants decided to make nominations and hold the election for the position during the October meeting. The president directs the meeting. Duties include calling the meeting to order, reviewing old business, then asking if residents have new business to discuss. While those are the basic duties, it s really a role that the president can make their own as he or she sees fit. The September meeting attendees suggested people interested in becoming president prepare a short list of qualifications and reasons why he or she would like to become president. Council attendees are also welcome to nominate fellow residents whom they feel would be a good fit for the role. The election of the new president will be held during the next Resident Council meeting on Thursday, October 25 at 10 :45 a.m. in the Activity Room. Changes to ward clerk schedule begins October 1 Each day the ward clerks answer questions, handle phone calls, schedule appointments, maintain paperwork, and countless other tasks that keep things running smoothly for residents and staff. Their schedule is changing starting October 1. They ll be available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the nurse s station. Saturdays and Sundays, they ll move to the reception area from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. From the alternate location, they ll still be available for residents, but also be able to direct visitors as they come into the building on the weekend. It is a big change, says ward clerk Danielle Howell-Minturn, but I believe it will be a good one. We are still going to be able to assist the residents and nurses throughout these shifts. I think it will help with communication. Walky-Talky returns for Activities Walky-Talky is back on the Sherwood calendar after a long hiatus. While some residents may remember this fun way to get ready for the morning exercise program, the unique moniker may have some scratching their heads. Each morning, as the activity staff makes the rounds, they ll ask residents to join them on the walk around the building as they invite neighbors to morning exercise. The walk around the building is the walky part, and the conversation with neighbors is the talky part. A resident at Sherwood came up with the name Walky-Talky, says activity assistant Brenda Rider. People would be lined up at their door waiting for the train to come by on the way to the activity room. Staff members have already been coming around to invite residents to activities, so this is just adding a way for people to get to know their neighbors and add a little more to their morning exercise routine. People who aren t quite ready to go when the group passes their room can still ask their caregiver for assistance to the activity room. It s time for Halloween Tricks and Treats! Let s get started with the TREATS on Tuesday, October 30 at 10:45 a.m. in the Activity Room. We ll prepare the bags of candy for distribution during Trick or Treat time. Wednesday, October 31 Join us for a frightfully fun time at the Halloween Party in the Activity Room at 2 p.m. The little ghosts, goblins and ghouls come to haunt the halls of Sherwood for Trick or Treat from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. or until the candy is gone! 3 From Summer to Autumn Hanging on to every day of summer, Inger Haave, Roy Carter, and Stan Johann get out into the gorgeous sunshiny day for a barbecue lunch at John Wayne Marina. Polly Gilkeson (above) and Evie Keysor (below) enjoy the beginning of autumn with sunshine and a harvest of beans and tomatoes from the vegetable garden in the Kensington Courtyard. The Cabin Fever Quilt Show was a magnificent display of artwork and intricate craftmanship. The group gathered up for a photo by the Quilts of Valor display. These quilts are lovingly assembled then presented to nominated veterans in appreciation of their service in the United States military. Avian expert Bob Boekelheide lined up the scope on a bald eagle that was perched in the trees along the shores of Dungeness Landing County Park. Stan Johann (above) and Jo Anderson (right) got a close up view of the majestic bird. October 2018 The Sherwood Like to Know 3
