CLASS OF THE YEAR Class of the Year is one of the ways in which the Physical Education Department encourages participation and recognises and celebrates achievement. Points are awarded for various activities throughout the year such as participation levels, representing the school in competitions and performance in many of the class sponsor events and challenges. This is designed to encourage every child in the class to be an effective contributor, responsible citizen, successful learner and confident individual. Well done to everyone who has contributed points to their class! The current leader board is as follows: S1 S2 1a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a8 197 I love Table Tennis Club every Wednesday and Thursday lunchtime in the Sports Hall. James McIlwham, 1a1 3

S3/4 PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSE OPTIONS Towards the end of S2 pupils are required to select from one of three options in PE: Intermediate, Sports Leader and Performance. There are significant differences between each of the options and it s important that pupils choose the course that s most appropriate for them. Not sure which is the best PE course for you? Read these pupil experiences to help you decide. S3/4 Intermediate PE Choosing Intermediate PE was one of the most beneficial decisions I have ever made. Not only do you get to play the sports, but you get to go into much more detail about the sport and how to improve. The sports we concentrated on were Badminton, Basketball, Gymnastics, Hockey and Football. In each of these you investigate what makes a good performance in that activity. You then compare this to your own performance and see what your strengths are and where you need to improve. You then complete a training programme to help you improve your weakness. The training programmes are hard work but really enjoyable and give you a great sense of satisfaction as you improve. At the end of every period you are given time to play games against your classmates; this is important as you are able to put into practice the skills and techniques you have worked on throughout the lesson. Choosing Intermediate PE means you have got classroom lessons every couple of weeks but these are enjoyable as they are very interactive. There is regular homework too but as this is about what we have experienced in the practical lessons it s interesting. Studying PE to this level I feel also gives you a great qualification if you want to pursue a career in sport, when you apply for a course at college or university or a job. I love PE because it is fun and you can do sports with your friends, Michael Noble, 2a10 Tom Connolly, 4a10 4

S4 Sports Leader I feel Sports Leader has been the most fun, exciting and educating experience I have had in my school life. Firstly we developed leadership skills such as planning, communication and teamwork which will be invaluable to us in whichever professions we go into. This was done through many practical activities that were all really fun. As we progressed through the course we became more confident. We started leading small groups in short activities such as warm-ups, though by the end we would take much larger groups for whole sessions. The Primary visit was our final challenge. We were put in charge of a class of Primary pupils for 2 whole periods. The course had prepared us for this and we had organised a series of activities for the pupils to take part in. We worked as a team and were responsible for different parts. Leading these younger pupils was exciting and very rewarding too. Sports Leadership is something I would recommend to anyone. I was never the most sporty but I loved this and enjoy PE so much more now. I am sad I can t do the next level till S6 but I will wait with excitement and anticipation for it!! Kevin Glasgow 4a4 I love PE because you get to learn to play different sports. Garrett Killen, 2a5 5

Performance PE I picked performance PE because it looked like a fun course to follow. There are a wide variety of sports that we can participate in so we get to improve our skills in a wide range of activities. The course is also a great way to find out what sports you are good at and also an opportunity to try things you have never done before. I have really enjoyed playing basketball and am looking forward to the other activities such as football and badminton. The other great thing about the course is that we get to make our own choices about the activities we want to take part in. We have 3 practical lessons a week so we get lots of exercise which helps to keep us fit and healthy. I am also learning skills which I can use later on in life and hope to maintain a healthy lifestyle even after I have left school. We work in teams quite a lot so we can work and socialise with people we wouldn t normally. This has also helped to develop my confidence. The final reason why this was best for me was as this is not a certificated class; there was no exam to study for at the end. This meant I have more time throughout the year to concentrate on work in my other subjects. Katie Melvin (4a6) and Chloe Robinson (4a10) I love PE because I like being active and doing different sports. Matthew Harty, 2a7 6

S5/6 COURSE OPTIONS Higher Physical Education In S5 and S6 you have the option of selecting Higher Physical Education. Higher PE is a practically based subject that has the same UCAS points as all other Highers. By evaluating your own performance you will learn to be more self-reflective. This is something that is essential in many professions such as Medicine, Dentistry and Teaching. Read this pupils account of their experience of Higher PE. Higher Physical Education I picked Higher PE mainly because I enjoyed PE and sport. You get 6 periods of PE a week with 2 double periods of practical and 2 single periods in a classroom doing written work to prepare you for the exam. In Higher PE there are three main study areas. The first of these covers preparation of the body in football and includes topics like the aspects of fitness, principles of training, methods of training and periodization. In the second study topic we learned about how to analyse and evaluate an athlete s performance in badminton and compare it to our own, how to improve our performance, how people acquire sports skills and the factors affecting gaining new skills. In the final study topic we learned about the structures and strategies in basketball. This I love PE because you having a great time learning new skills and teamwork. Frances Leahy Kelly, 2a7 7

includes how formations and tactics can be used to improve performance. In each area you analyse your own performance to find out your strengths and weaknesses. You then complete a training programme to improve your weaknesses. Finally you evaluate your performance again to see how much you have improved. Now that I am deciding what to do when I leave school I am even happier I chose Higher PE as it has the same UCAS points as other subjects like English and Maths. I am considering applying for courses in Physiotherapy, Physical Education Teaching and Sports Science. Andrew Robertson 6a6 I love PE because of the fantastic trips they organise. Stuart Pittman, 6a5 8

S6 Sports Leader Have you already done Higher PE in S5? Want to do a course that develops leadership skills and gives you practical experiences and opportunities that you can put in your personal statement? S6 Sports Leader can do all this and much more. Below read a fellow pupil s experience of the course. After completing Sports Leader Level One in S4, I found I had really enjoyed the course and chose it as an option in S6. So far, I am really enjoying the course and what it has to offer. It is a great opportunity to learn how to work with children and other people as part of a team. I feel this year, doing Sports Leadership, I have not only formed better relationships with others in my year that I didn t know as well before, but I have got to know and became somewhat of a role model to primary kids. Every week there is something new, whether it is helping lead a primary PE class or someone from a sports organisation coming in to teach us new games and skills. I have never seen myself as a particularly sporty person, but Sports Leadership gives everyone a chance to show their talents and develop enthusiasm and confidence. Another reason why it was good was because it gave me plenty to write about in my UCAS personal statement. This is because I was able to give examples of all the skills they were looking for such as leadership, communication and teamwork. Overall, I am really enjoying this course and look forward to the new challenges each week has to offer. It is definitely a course I would recommend to future S6 pupils. I love PE because I get a great feeling from exercise! Andreas Christoforou, 1a4 Kristin Lynch, 6a1 9

The competition was held at Eastwood High School and all East Renfrewshire primary and secondary schools competed. The S3/4 dancers came 2 nd in the street dance competition and the S1 dancers came 3 rd in their street dance category. The girls are all now working hard on choreography and performance for next year s dance show which takes place on Thursday 29 th March. The S1/S2 dance class is on a Tuesday from 3:30 4:30pm and the S3/S4 dance class is on a Thursday from 3:30 4:30pm. Miss Fleming I love PE because it s fun and it keeps me healthy! Also you get to know people better in PE. Leah Cullen, 1a4 14

SKI AND SNOWBOARD CLUB The Ski and Snowboard club continues to grow with new pupils learning every year. Many pupils attend in preparation for family and/or school ski trips in Scotland and abroad. Lessons and free skiing/snowboarding takes place at Bellahouston and Xscape at Braehead. The School Championships were held on the 14 th December Well done to all of the pupils who took part in the race and participated over the course of this term. The results were as follows: 1st Peter De Groote (3a5) 21.3seconds 2nd Sean Phelan (3a7) 22.8seconds 3rd Daniel Cowie (1a4) 24.0seconds Mr Eaglesham and Miss Jamieson 15

S6 ALPE D HUEZ SKI TRIP The annual S6 Ski Trip took place in December with 29 pupils enjoying a fantastic trip to Alpe d Huez in France. Only 2 weeks prior to the trip leaving there was literally no snow in the resort, even on the upper slopes. However, a week of non-stop blizzards meant absolutely wonderful conditions the first half of the week deep powder and the second half clear blue skies and the most incredible scenery. The Belle Aurore Hotel served as the ideal base for all activities with comfortable rooms, plenty of hearty food and a location in the centre of the resort. Après ski activities included celebrating Mass in the Church of Notre Dame des Nieges (Our Lady of the Snow), ice skating, bum boarding, disco, Miss Cox s marathon quiz and the famous room inspections! Our group was divided into 3 ski groups based on pupil ability. The first group consisting of all female non skiers was expertly taught by Gael who had the girls singing all over the mountain! They progressed brilliantly from never having put skis on to performing confident snowplough turns and beginning to parallel. They also managed to learn to use a variety of lifts including pomas, charlifts and gondolas. 16

The more experienced ski groups led by Laurie and Hyan explored the whole mountain, a mean feat considering there were 250km of runs. This included the longest black run in Europe (16km) as well as the many jumps in the Snow Park. Thankfully the only breakages were a couple of ski poles! Overall we had the trip of a lifetime and if it wasn t for Christmas we could have easily stayed another week or two! The pupils effort and behaviour was exceptional and they were the perfect ambassadors for the school and a credit to their families. Mr Fuchs, Miss Dastey and Miss Cox 17

FOOTBALL U13 Boys U13 League The U13 team has made an excellent start to the season and is unbeaten in 4 league games. 20 U14 League The U14 team has made a sensational start to the 2011/12 league campaign winning 7 league matches out of 7. This has included comprehensive victories against Williamwood (1-9), Johnstone (14-0), Mearns Castle (0-10), Castlehead (1-9), Glennifer (13-0), Barrhead (11-0), Williamwood (3-1). A 6-0 victory away to Dunoon Grammar heightened expectations further. However in the very next round dreams of lifting the national trophy were shattered as Bearsden secured a comprehensive 6-1 victory. 21 U15 Boys U15 League Having only won a single game in the whole of last season, the turnaround in the performances of the U15 team has been nothing short of sensational. In the league they are top having played 5 games and won 5 games. The victories have come against St Luke s (1-0), Williamwood (0-5), St Luke s (2-3), Williamwood (1-0) and Castlehead (1-3). 22 U16 Boys U16 League The U16 team has played 2 games and won 2 games in the league in what has been a promising start to the 2011/12 campaign. Beating Williamwood (4-1) and Paisley Grammar (5-0) has given the reigning champions good reason to believe they can retain the title that has been won by St Ninian s the last two years in a row. Played Won Drawn Lost GD Points St Ninian s Williamwood Eastwood Glennifer Paisley Grammar U16 Scottish Shield Having done brilliantly to defeat an excellent Stonelaw side 3-0 the draw in the Scottish Shield could not have been any more unkind to the team by pitching the team against Holyrood. However, history counted for nothing in this match as St Ninian s ran out comprehensive 2-0 winners. The 4 th round match away to Dumfries had the makings of a tricky tie but the boys pulled out all the stops and won 7-0. 23 Senior Boys U18 League The U18 football team has had a reasonable start to the season winning 4 out of 6 league games. Victories were recorded against Mearns Castle (6-0), Woodfarm (7-1) Eastwood (14-5), and Woodfarm (3-2). Defeats to Williamwood (1-0) and Mearns Castle (3-2) seriously dented the team s title hopes. Wins against Williamwood and Eastwood in the final two games are vital to have any hope of winning the league. Played Won Drawn Lost GD Points St Ninian s Williamwood Mearns Castle Woodfarm Eastwood U18 Scottish Shield The Scottish Shield remains the ultimate priority for the team who has come close in previous years. However the girls have bounced back from this in style by being crowned West Regional 7-a-side champions. The team won both games in their local section against Gryffe (5-0) and Dunoon (14-0) to qualify for the West Regional finals. Wins against Eastbank (3-0), Castlemilk (1-0) and Gryffe (6-0) and a draw with Holyrood (2-2) was enough to seal the title. 24

NETBALL S1 Netball The S1 netball team are working hard at the moment and have been putting in extra training at lunchtime where some of the S2 pupils have been sharing their experience with the girls, helping them develop their skills and improve their confidence. The girls have worked hard and produced some very good performances against all their opponents in the Scottish Cup. The New Year will bring some exciting and competitive matches for the girls who hopefully can reap the benefits of extra training and gain some positive results. S2 Netball The S2 girls got off to a rocky start losing their first game to Castlehead, but have since managed to go on a winning streak and play exceptionally well in the rest of the games. Victories against St Andrew s (24-17), Gryffe (17-1) and Williamwood (6-3). These results will mean the girls will qualify for the next round of the Scottish Cup. The S2 team is growing and developing into excellent netballers and with their dedication to training they will continue to produce the results they richly deserve. 26

S3 Netball The S3 girls have had another exceptional start to the season. They have been training hard and reaping the rewards winning 4 matches out of 4. Victories against Hamilton College (26-9), Duncanrig (23-5), Gryffe (36-3), and Williamwood (21-6). The hard work and enthusiasm the girls have put into their training and games as well as the relationships they have developed with each other throughout the season has eased them through the first round of games. If they are able to continue with this attitude they will hopefully go far in the competition. Miss Milne Senior Netball The senior netball team has started the season well winning 3 out of 4 of their first round matches in the Scottish Cup. Defeat to Notre Dame was cancelled out by victories over Glennifer, Gryffe and Linwood. This means progression to round two. The current S4 pupils who are in the team won the Scottish Silver Cup and the District Summer Tournament last season so let s hope they can carry this winning streak into this year! Miss Dastey 27

ATHLETICS St Ninian s High has for the first time introduced an Athletics club to all year groups. This club has progressed greatly since the start of term with a group of dedicated athletes attending the club weekly. The club offers a variety of different activities and training sessions related to athletics to cater for the needs of all that attend. The atmosphere of the club is always very positive and the individuals who attend are always encouraging towards others in the group. I look forward to watching the athletes blossom as the year progresses. Miss Milne 28

HOCKEY CLUB Pupils at the hockey club have been working extremely hard this year. They have been developing their hockey skills in preparation for forthcoming school fixtures. The club regularly welcomes new players, some who are beginners and others who play for hockey clubs outside of school. We meet every Thursday at 3:30pm at the Sports Hall so please feel free to come and join us and be part of the amazing hockey club! :) Miss Bryce and Miss Heslop I love PE because you push yourself to the limit. Vito Fazzi, 1a10 29

BADMINTON The badminton club is extremely popular and welcomes all pupils from S1- S6. The club offers something for absolutely everyone. Pupils can come along and just play for fun with friends or they can take part in specific training to improve their performance and fitness. For the first time fixtures against other schools have been arranged, giving pupils the opportunity to represent St Ninian s and take part in competitive matches. In the first of these games St Ninian s defeated Eastwood. Let s hope for further success. Watch this space! Miss Heslop DAVIS CUP TENNIS TRIP The Davis Cup was held at Braehead in September this year where Great Britain played in the round 3 tie against Hungary. 11 lucky pupils were selected to go along and watch GB beat Hungary 5-0. Miss Milne I love playing the fun games in badminton like Around the World or Wipe-out Erin Carey, 2a6 30

S1 OLYMPIC CHALLENGE With the Olympic Games being held in London this summer all S1 classes are being challenged to get into the spirit of the event and get active. The challenge is to be the first class to walk the length of the London marathon route. This is a massive 42,000km or 26.2 miles. Each class will be given a pedometer that will be worn by a different person each period in PE. The first class to cross the finish line will win 200 Class of the Year points and a London 2012 badge for each pupil. Good luck to everyone and get walking! You can follow the progress of the classes on the Pupil Section of the PE GLOW Group. Mr Arbuckle I love PE because of Friday Sports Club! Matthew Palmer, 4a9 31
