1 HEAD MASTER'S BULLETIN FRIDAY 2 JUNE 2017 NEWS & NOTIFICATIONS Annual Trinity Arts Festival In Full Swing From the Head Master This week, the undoubted highlights have been associated with the celebration of the creative arts at the School. We have had Visual Arts workshops such as the string art on the Quad, which also included a performance from our String Quartet at Quad Assembly. 2 have enjoyed lunchtime performances such as the Lip Sync Battle as well as the now traditional Wednesday night Battle of the Bands Concert. This evening we look forward to Friday Night Fever starting at 6pm, a wonderful occasion where you have the opportunity to dip into the many and varied expressions of creative art activities within the School a smorgasbord of creative and artistic delights! Outstanding Performances Once Again At The Sydney Eisteddfod Interspersed amongst the aforementioned activities we have also had wonderful news regarding the Sydney Eisteddfod this week, with the Sinfonietta winning the U19 String Orchestra section and the Serenata Ensemble being Highly Commended in that same section. 3 ACADEMIC Academic Focus Year 7 Language Selections for Year 8 (2018) All Year 7 parents should have, today, received an outlining the process for their son s Year 8 Language selection in In Year 8, boys continue their current core curriculum, but with the mandatory study of a Language Elective of their choosing. Please click here to access the Year 8 Guide to Courses document, which provides detailed information about each Language Elective course, as well as the Mandatory Courses in Year 8. The Head of Languages, Mr Ashley Lucas, has also produced a very detailed video to support you and your son with this decision. This video can be accessed by clicking here. Please complete the on-line form sent to you today in consultation with your son. This form must be submitted no later than Friday 16 June If your son wishes to change his selection, the form can be re-submitted at any stage up until the due date as the system will only register the last Elective submitted. Please note that no advantage will accrue from submitting the form early. However, boys whose forms are received after the due date may be accorded a lower priority for placement in their chosen Language. 4 Arthur Holt Library News The library has been full of activity to celebrate the first week of the Trinity Arts festival. It was tough getting up in the cold and dark, but our second event made it all worthwhile. Yoni Bashan, journalist, and author of The Squad, spoke about the police investigations into the growing problem of Middle Eastern organised crime, covering drugs, violence, guns and intimidation. He was joined by two former police officers who were featured in the book, and their input added reality to what might otherwise have seemed like a fictional crime story. Fuelled by croissants and coffee, the audience were enthusiastic and kept the questions coming we even overheard one boy say it had been worth getting up so early! And as our friendly bookseller said, we have better readers when we have conversations about books. We ve been bringing the books to you, with our Pop Goes The Library pop-up libraries appearing in the staffroom on Tuesday and on the Quad on Wednesday. 7 Battle of the Bands 2017 In its 11th year, Battle of the Bands kicked off the start of Trinity s Festival of the Arts on Wednesday 31st May in the Wilson Hogg Assembly Hall. Seven hopeful bands competed for 3 prizes Roadies Prize, Rising Star and 1st Prize Winner. All bands performed spectacularly to a packed hall. Roadies Prize went to Tenacious Turtlenecks - David Carreon (11St), Charlie Griffith (11Yo), Jackson Jap (11He), Saachin Simpson (11WH) and Cameron Tam (11St). 10 da Vinci Decathlon 2017 Senior and Middle School Year 7 to 11 The NSW da Vinci Decathlon is an annual event where schools compete in a rigorous state wide tournament. A theme is given each year and in 2017 the tasks focused on the concept of POWER. Teams of eight Trinity boys were selected to represent each year group from Years They competed in ten events that included Engineering, Science, Mathematics, Creative Producers (Drama), English, General Knowledge, Code breaking and Ideation. Prior to the Competition Day, the five Trinity teams (Y7-11) took part in a full training day to prepare for the competition. They started the day with a Creative Drama experience lead by Mrs Smith-Sergi. This supported the core value of working collaboratively as a team whilst challenging the boys to work outside their comfort zone. For the remainder of the training, the boys worked in their teams and competed against each other while engaging in tasks linked to the 2017 theme. The boys enjoyed this opportunity where they could work together over an extended time across the school day. This experience affirmed their individual strengths and allowed them time to plan for the challenges their teams would face at the actual da Vinci Decathlon competition. On the day of the competition, each of the Year 7 - Year 11 teams were exemplary in their attitude and behaviour. They managed to collaborate with eight team members all day, ensuring that strict timelines were met for very challenging and demanding tasks. The boys displayed the utmost maturity and supported each other to utilise each individual s particular strengths. All the tasks were pitched at an extremely high level to challenge the boys to work at their edge of competence. 16 Shakespeare Carnival Success The Shakespeare Carnival is a prestigious competition that invites schools to showcase quality performance work set to a high standard. Encouraged and coached by the Drama department we held a mini carnival this year as a reintroduction to the Trinity Drama cocurricular activities. Ms Miller and Mrs Smith-Sergi were fortunate to work with a dedicated group of young actors who through experimentation and perseverance made meaning of the Bards brilliance. A small but appreciative audience viewed the performances and a number of boys were selected to represent Trinity at the Regional Finals. They all displayed an excellent level of developing or emerging performance skills and showed great commitment to the collaborative process. The finals were held at the International Grammar School on May the 29 th with substantial competition from some well-rehearsed and slick performers. The boys in the scene category presented a comical rendition of the Mechanicals from A Mid-Summer Night s Dream to rousing audience applause and laughter. They were awarded the distinguished honour of Highly Commended for outstanding performance, which entitled them to an associate membership of the Sport for Jove Theatre Company in recognition of their efforts, a very reputable award and worthy of high praise. Performers for the ensemble included; James Brockie, Hamish Davidson-Mcleod, Blake Hui, Aiden Lee, Josiah May, Tom Jenkins, James Perkins, Nicholas Testa And Steven Yarad and the representatives at the Regional Carnival included, Mitch Butler, Anton Demark, Basil Georgas, James Field, Aston Forster, Bryton Forster, Alex Malis and Ryan Whitford. 17 Shakespeare and the Supernatural Year 9 Class Production On Wednesday, June 24th the Experimental Drama Theatre was turned into something of ethereal junkyard for the production of Shakespeare and the Supernatural. Scenes from a Midsummer Night s Dream, Macbeth, Hamlet and the Tempest among others were fused into phantasmagorical escapade through Shakespeare s other worlds. Set on an evocative set (by designer Stephanie Howe) featuring gold spray painted 44 gallon drums, both Year 9 Drama classes treated the audience to a sometimes dream, sometimes nightmare trip through the subconscious. The strength of the piece lay in the juxtaposing of scenes from tragedies placed next to scenes from comedies so that some new insights about the sweep of Shakespeare s and indeed the human imagination were gained. The emphasis here was on ensemble so it would be unfair to single out individuals, but for this viewer, the staging of a shipwreck and the mechanicals play reading were particular highlights. The two aims of having boys take performance beyond workshop experience to production level; and to experience Shakespeare on stage, were well realised. All credit to the directors, Ms Miller and Mrs Smith-Sergi, the designer Ms Stephanie Howe and production manager Mrs Stewart. Particular mention goes to Mrs Stewart s Year 11 Entertainment class who, under considerable difficulty, managed the technical running of the show with aplomb and sophistication. 18 SPORT Rugby vs St. Aloysius' MIC When the attitude and match performances of lower grade teams correspond with our A-grade sides in terms of playing style in attack and defence, broad smiles are elicited from coaches and spectators alike. The infectiousness of the pleasure derived by the spectators is manifested in the displays of satisfaction form the players after their games, ironically regardless of the score. The technical nature of Rugby is often lost on players who either play the sport for the sake of fulfilling their co-curricular obligation, or for those who simply play sport with no desire to progress beyond the team in which they find themselves. However, by being exposed to passionate coaches and witnessing the example set by senior players, they begin to absorb the game by osmosis. The consequence of this exposure was displayed on Saturday on College Oval by the 4th and 3rd XVs. For boys who had last played the game in Year Six or Year 7, and returned to the sport in Year Twelve to play with their mates, they certainly performed at a level that generated compliments from both Trinity parents and senior coaches. Both teams played with purpose and passion. The matches were mirror images of one another. The attacking shape of the forward drives, sustaining control of the ball for extended phases, complemented by the effective backline defence, demonstrated the value to be derived by playing with mates and enjoying the physical challenges of the game. This area of heaven s game was captured in a moment in time when the slightest Trinity winger, playing only his third full game of Rugby, tackled an intimidating Aloysius flanker running at full speed down the score-board sideline in other words, Poetry in Motion. On behalf of the coaches and Trinity spectators, I would like to congratulate our seniors for providing a wonderful spectacle of Rugby for all to witness last Saturday. Andrea Folli MIC Rugby 1st XV The First XV struggled against a combative and aggressive St. Aloysius team that prevented the Trinity players from getting a foothold in the game. Aloys controlled most areas of the game, playing a smart territorial game by keeping play in the Trinity half of the field. Despite their awareness of the Blue and Gold tactics, the Trinity Firsts essentially played a defensive game against a relentless and domineering Aloys forward pack. The Boys in Green valiantly tackled in the first half of the game, consistently making their one-on-one tackles, but the energy-sapping first thirty-five minutes impacted on the quality of their defence in the second half. The Aloysius forward pack maintained control of the ball through a combination of progressive pick-and-go drives, supplemented by dynamic carries and immediate clearing at the rucks. The Trinity forwards, for much of the game, attempted to stem the flow of frequent Aloysius attacks, but their efficacy was limited by the rapid ball recycling by the attacking side. The value of the game for the Trinity side lay in the trial nature of the contest. When St. Aloysius meet us again, we will have had another four games in terms of experience and match conditioning. Round One of the CAS commences this coming Saturday against Barker, and we wish all our teams the best of luck (supplemented by a dose of hard work and perseverance, of course) in their first round of the CAS Winter Season. Andrea Folli MIC Rugby 2nd XV Despite having the lion s share of possession along with an abundance of territory at College oval last Saturday, the Trinity 2nd XV were unable to put points on the board in the first half. Despite a half-time talk devoted to execution and finishing, the pattern continued in the second half, the only problem being that St. Aloysius turned the ball over off the back of a Trinity error and went 60 metres the other way to lead 5-0 on the scoreboard with 5 minutes to play. Fortunately through a patient build-up and a few hard earned penalties, captain courageous Ben LoRusso (12He) was able to cross for a try 30 second from the final whistle. The conversion was unsuccessful; final score Trinity 5 St. Aloysius 5. Upon reflection, one that got away! Andrew Payne 2nd XV 15A In what could have been a tiresome game at Trinity became a convincing performance with a solid powerful forward performance. Riley Large (10Hi) organised his team well with a whole-hearted effort. Jack Bermingham (10Mu) had his best game of the season and needs to build from here for future performances. Although experimentation with players and positions narrowed the deficit, Trinity were always in control of the game. Lachlan White U15A Coach 14A After learning of the news that they were to play on the hallowed turf of TGS 1, the 14A side were especially keen to put in a good performance against St Aloys. The day started well with all 15 players turning up on time for the warm-up. The boys were focussed and ready, come kick-off time. Trinity dominated the possession in the early stages of the match, and were rewarded with tries to Turoa Williams (9WH) and Tyson Jackson (8Fo). Some of the boys got a bit of white line fever and a few chances were missed, Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 18 of 69

19 but it was good to see Lachlan Dock (8Ta) score his first try for the season towards the end of the first half. Leading 26-0 at half time, the side highlighted the fact that they needed to spread the ball through the hands in the second half and to the team s credit they played with more structure and flair. Juno Yim (8Ho) was destructive with ball in hand and he crossed for 2 tries. Daniel Morris (8St) made a welcome return from injury to provide some aggression and determination, and he was ably supported by fellow flanker Jacob Stark (8Fo) who seemed to make a break every time he touched the ball. Another fantastic win for the 14A side. Ian Moran U14A Coach 13B Jasper Fforde once wrote that organised sport builds character, and that the concept of character was invented to justify the existence of organised sport. As much as I appreciate the humour of the statement, there s no denying that character-a-plenty was in fact being built on Number Three Oval last week! It s tough to turn out against an opposition that is bigger, faster, stronger and more skilled than you are, but this is something that rugby teaches us: there s always someone better than you. On this occasion there were 15 people better than us! We looked down and out after the first half, which saw Scots run in 7 unanswered tries. The second half began much like the first; however, a late concerted effort to retain possession, and to have ball retention as our main goal, saw Trinity with an attacking opportunity in the opposition s 22. Scots then gave away a penalty and captain William Blanchfield (8 Ho) was able to capitalise and barge through what seemed like, up until this point, impenetrable defence, scoring out on the left wing. Tomorrow will see the boys face up in the first official CAS round for 2017 and it will be their character as a team that determines whether or not they succeed this season. Phillip Roser U13B Coach 13C With hard work at training and improvements in structure and organisation on the field, the 13Cs have been playing some high quality rugby. On the weekend they were up against a strong St Aloysius' Bs team. While Trinity were in front and the dominant team for most of the game, unfortunately St Aloysius scored two quick tries in the last five minutes to claim victory Jonathan Fouad (8WJ) was dominant in both attack and defence, with the big men Elias Sidiropoulos (7Yo) and Mercurius Yousif (8Sc) making some thundering runs down the field. Jack Barter (7St) has been going from strength to strength, moving up from the Ds and scoring a strong try this week. A little more discipline in defence is required to turn dominant performances into victories. 28 Football vs St Aloysius' Yesterday, Year 9 and 10 Football Players had the opportunity to meet and train under Chelsea FC Youth Academy Coach Mr Russell Banyard. On Wednesday the Bill Turner Cup U15 Squad kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 victory over SSC Leichhardt. Last Saturday Trinity competed against St Aloysius in CAS Round 5. Trinity achieved eleven victories and five draws with the 9A, 8A, 7A and 7B teams continuing their unbeaten run. 29 Year 9 and Year 10 Football Players with Chelsea FC Academy Coach Mr Russell Banyard This week s Bulletin focuses on the Year 10 Football games Vs. St Aloysius. 1st XI Vs St Aloysius: 0-3 Loss College Oval - the number one grass field in schoolboy Football was the scene for the 1st XI who were looking for a victory that would catapult them into equal first place. Unfortunately, Trinity lost and this sent St Aloysius to be sole CAS leaders at the halfway point in the competition. In the game, Trinity demonstrated early through controlled possession, an improved attitude towards protecting the ball. The opposition fouled Trinity in an attempt to win back possession and it was unfortunate that Trinity was not able to convert these chances. Trinity conceded a soft goal in the first half and conceded two penalties in the second half that gave St Aloysius a 3-0 victory. Special mention to Captain of Football William Todd (12Ar) who was unwell after the game and dusted himself off and presented his best speech to date in the post match function. Trinity now look forward to their encounter with Barker at Rosewood tomorrow. Luke Gray 1st XI Coach 2nd XI Vs St Aloysius: 1-4 Loss After last week`s washed out game against Waverley, the game against St Aloysius took on more importance in regard to staying in touch with teams that did play. Trinity had a slow start, which was partly our own doing, and also the aggressive closing down from St Aloysius. A rush of blood saw a penalty awarded to the opposition This seemed to wake up the Trinity boys, and as some passes were strung together Trinity took control. In the 21st minute a half turn volley from Cristian Lorenzato (12Fo) gave us the equaliser we deserved. Within a minute a cut back from Dean Bozionelos (12Ta) to Lorenzato watched his shot saved by the keeper and trickle along the goal line before it was cleared. Half time was 1-1 and the feeling was that if we could step up our intensity and win more of the battles, that we could go on with it. In the end we didn t step up and made too many defensive errors. 30 10A Vs St Aloysius: 2-3 Loss Trinity came up against a determined opposition. We conceded a very early goal, during which Owen Duke (10La) was fouled, but the goal stood. The Trinity boys did not drop their heads. We started to control and dictate play through a possession game. Samuel Harb (10Sc) was the conduit through which many forward moves were directed. His ability to draw opposition players out of position provided Kevin Cloke (10Du) multiple opportunities to quickly switch the ball from one side to the other in his defensive midfield role. This enabled Samuel York (10Hi) and Ben Bishop (10Hi) to quickly attack down their respective wings and create scoring opportunities for Trinity. Shortly before half-time Samuel Harb, through a quickly executed dribble, managed to lose his marker and shoot from outside the box into the top right corner and level the scores at 1-1. The Trinity boys were buoyant and in control of the game. The central defensive group of Isaac Wilkins (10Mu), Callum Clayton (10Fo) and Joshua Andreatta (10Du) were rock solid in the heart of Trinity s defence. Midway way through the second half Samuel York danced his way through the opposition defence on the left-hand side and as he entered the 18-yard box, he unleashed a thunderbolt of a low shot across the outstretched hands of the opposition goalkeeper and into the far bottom corner. Trinity led 2-1 after constant pressure and through strong build-up play. The opposition resorted to playing hopeful long balls up the park. Unfortunately, late in the game Trinity conceded two goals. The final result was a 2-3 loss to St Aloysius. The boys should be proud of their effort as they played excellent possession football and deserved at least a point from the game. The 10As wish Kenny Chu (10Mu) a speedy recovery after his being concussed as a result of a stray ball to the head, late in the game. Petar Peric 10A Coach 10B Vs St Aloysius: 0-3 Loss The final fixture of Round 1 capped off a disappointing end that finished with a 3-0 loss to St Aloysius. However, the scoreline does not reflect players efforts throughout. Having been given a few calls against by the referee on the day, the 10Bs fought a hard battle from start to finish. A key performance from Trinity Goal Keeper Jonathan Neheme (10Ta) kept his team in the game with a 0-1 goal difference at half time. Chances were going both ways throughout the second half, but it just was not Trinity's day. Jarod Phelan 10B Coach 10C Vs St Aloysius: 0-3 Loss The 10Cs suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss against St Aloysius last Saturday. The first half was a fairly even affair with Trinity creating some dynamic attacks, often through Dhiren Satyendra (10Fo). Despite the struggles with keeping possession in the midfield the defence remained solid until St Aloysius pounced on the counter attack after an unsuccessful attacking corner, scoring a well worked goal. After some reflection at halftime, Trinity began the second half with good tempo, but our failure to combine passes and use the ball effectively hampered our ability to get back in the match. St Aloysius scored two late goals to seal the 3-0 win. A disappointing result, but we learned plenty of lessons and drew many positives from the experience. Special mention to James Zoras (10Mu) for his tireless effort in defensive midfield and Kevin Matthew (10He) for his excellent communication and composure at left back. The game was free flowing with numerous opportunities for both teams to break the deadlock. Trinity had to work hard in defence. Rene Noble (10He) was very strong in goals and fortunately did not need to do quite as much work as in previous matches. Paresh Moodley (10WH) was ever vigilant and swift to diffuse many attacking raids. Mohammad Hijazi (10We) displayed great determination and Stelios Papadopoulos (10We) had several shots at goal which were on target but a quality St Aloysius keeper was able deny us a win. 31 Bill Turner Cup Round 3 Vs. SSC Leichhardt: 2-0 Win On Wednesday the 31st of May our Trinity Grammar School U/15 Bill Turner Cup team encountered SSC Leichhardt High School at TGS No. 2. Fortunately for the boys, due to two byes our team automatically advanced to Round 3 of the Cup. This being our first game of the knock out series, the 16 man squad was determined and focused in grabbing the win at home. In the first half of the game Trinity were able to settle themselves and secured significant amounts of ball possession. Special mention must go to our two powerful, game changing centre backs Mohammed Khamis (9We) and Joshua Yeoh (9Sc) who controlled the tempo of the game from the back. In the dying stages of the first half, substitute Owen Bazdaric (8St) calmly placed the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal, giving the opposition's keeper no chance of saving his attempt. After a positive half time, talk the boys gave SSC Leichhardt no chance to get back into the contest. Our dynamic left back Fenn Hodgson-Yu (8WJ) was outstanding throughout the whole game in both defence and attack. Additionally, substitute Steve Poulos (9Ta) was dynamic in the striker position and had a great impact in the team, securing a victory. In the middle of the second half Dimitri Gremos (9Fo) doubled the home team s advantage, making it two goals to nil. There were many positives taken from the encounter against SSC Leichhardt and there were a couple things which we as a team could improve on and which we will polish and perfect in our upcoming training sessions. Our team now advances to the fourth round and after a couple weeks of training I am certain that each and every player in the Bill Turner Cup squad will be even more determined and ready to win once more. 32 Bill Turner Cup Squad vs SSC Leichhardt Chelsea FC Youth Academy Coach At Trinity Yesterday Chelsea FC Youth Academy Coach Mr Russell Banyard was welcomed at the Years 9 and 10 Football training session. Before all teams departed to their locations for training, Mr Banyard was introduced to the Trinity coaches and players. A quick Q&A followed, with Mr Banyard explaining his role at Chelsea Football Club as a coach with the Foundation and Youth Academy. Student questions focused on his playing career and it was interesting to learn that he was scouted as a 7 year old for Chelsea and was part of the Academy for many years. During this time he had the opportunity to play against players such as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. Mr Banyard was impressed by the facilities at Trinity and finished his time at with us by coaching a group of Years 9 and 10 boys through a Chelsea FC modelled training session. Individual Skills Training Between 6:50am - 8:00am on Mondays during term time there will be an individual skills session for any interested Footballer between Years The session will be conducted by Mr Zac Galluzzo and other coaches may be added depending on numbers. Trinity Firsts had four key players sitting on the sideline this weekend due to shoulder soreness (from carrying the team), concussion (from over-thinking things) and sore ankles (from side-steps too good even for ligaments)! What was obvious on the weekend was that beyond these typical mid-season ailments, the Trinity Firsts had some more unusual medical issues to contend with. Kerr Chris Barnes MIC YEARS 9 And 10 AFL ROUND FIVE St. Aloysius' Def Trinity. Trinity s Years 9 and 10 side has been hard hit by injuries with up to seven regular squad members unavailable. So the team had to be band-aided together with a number of boys having already fulfilled their Rugby commitment, then travelling out to the Bat and Ball Oval to help out their AFL compadres. Spirit and commitment were undiminished, but it is most difficult to be competitive without a bench. A seven-goal second quarter to the opposition put paid to the result, but heads were lifted by a spirited second half rally where it was 6 goals to 4. There were some key positional changes at half- time with Alex Cameron (10WH) going to ruck and forming a positive combination with Ben Estell (10He) that delivered quality inside 50s to the forward line. This released Connor Murphy (10Ta) to play his running game and Anton Demark (9Sc) played a clever tactical game, pocketing two goals. Matthew Uglow (9He) reads an AFL game like a gypsy fortune teller and used his positional versatility to thwart Aloy s incursions and then put us on the front foot. James Park (9Yo), Finn Murphy (9Ta) and Ben Estell were courage personified, with inspirational third and fourth efforts in wresting possession from the opposition who had all the momentum. Finn s never-say-die battle in a one on three contest was backs to the wall stuff. Harvey Greene (10Sc) and Hugh Casimir (10WH) defended stoutly, but the real Rock of Gibraltar was Jack Bermingham (10Mu), who, having already played a game of Rugby, used his size and safe hands to blunt many an attacking raid at the last post. A big shout out to Blaise McKee (10Ar), another Rugby player, who was a force to reckoned with on the wing. All players left the field, having done all that was asked of them and then a whole lot more. Dunkirk beckons! Next week we lose another five players to Year 9 camp. 36 Brendan Duhigg Year 9 and 10 AFL Coach YEARS 7 And 8 AFL Trinity Vs Waverley At Pioneers Park On a near perfect Autumn Day the Year 7/8 team were hunting for their first win of the season. They certainly didn't disappoint with the first two quarters being played at a fast and frenetic pace, the team showed they could keep possession for extended periods of time and string together a number of quality plays. Hamish Agnew (8Ta) showed real speed on the wing and really opened up a number of attacking options in the first quarter. Curtis Sioulas (7La) used his strength in the forward line to score his first goal for the season and the team lifted and started to gel with a number of handball connections through the midfield. Benjamin Orr (7Ho) and Ben Cook (7St) combined a number of times to allow our forwards to capitalise on scoring opportunities and as a result Trinity led at the half time break by 5 points. Waverley came out in the third quarter with a determined approach and really applied pressure on our defence with Jack Braga (8Du), Oscar Van Hal (8Mu), Steven Yarad (7Mu) and Alan Weston (7Ta) working hard to stop the onslaught of play being channelled through our defence. The score could have really blown out but to the credit of all the boys, we rallied to stay within two kicks of Waverley with only the final quarter to be played. We started the last quarter with the first goal and this gave us real belief that we could go all the way and win the game. For the next 5 minutes both teams rallied back and forth with possession, our defence did a tremendous job at stopping each attacking play of Waverley and it was only in the last few minutes of the game that Waverley managed to get a few uncontested runs which resulted in three goals to run away victors. The Years 7/8 team should hold their heads high, it was a great game and they should take away some real confidence that they have made some big in roads into developing in the sport of AFL. 37 Tennis vs St Aloysius' Round 5 of the CAS tennis competition was contested last weekend with Trinity contesting teams from St Aloysius and Sydney Grammar School. Our students once again did well, registering only one loss to St Aloysius. Against Sydney Grammar School also we fared well, considering our C and D teams contested their A and B teams. On paper our 1st 1V team registered a strong 6-2 sets win; however it was not all plain sailing as the St Aloysius students pushed us all the way. Credit must be given to our players, who were able to convert the more important points in tight situations to cement the win. The 2nd 1V registered a similar winning margin, albeit with a few more games in hand. Tomorrow s matches will be contested against Barker College and I wish students and coaches the very best of luck! Jeremy Dykgraaff MIC Tennis 10As And 10Bs It was another strong win by the Tennis 10A and Bs against St Aloysius on Saturday. 10As won 5 sets to 1, 35 games to 12. We welcomed Jason Wu (10Ho) back to the 10As this week, pairing up with Jonathon Karagiannis (10Hi) in the doubles to win 6-3 in a tight set, both Jonathan and Jason showed their fighting spirit by winning the important points. With Justin Sleiman (10Ta) out with an injured ankle, Aidan Tharamarajah (10WH) teamed up with Lachlan Sleiman (10St) for an easy 6-0 win. Jason played well in his singles and after some early close games went on to win 6-1. Jonathon followed, again showing what a good player he is by winning 6-1. Aidan continued his good form into the singles winning 6-0, while Lachlan had a close set against a good player, despite having the lead late in the set but couldn t hold on just going down Bs won 6 sets to 0, 36 games to 1. Jack Opperman (10Ta)and Dominic Lay (10St) continued their unbeaten run in the doubles by winning 6-0 in a very short time, while Munashe Mushangazhike (10WJ) stepped up from the 10Cs again to pair up with Ritvik Dinesh (10Ke), also winning easily 6-0. Jack, Dominic and Ritvik again showed their dominance, outclassing their opposition 6-0 in their singles, while Munashe had a good win 6-1. What a great team! Michael Leadbeatter 10As and 10Bs Coach 9As And 9Bs After gaining their first win of the season against Cranbrook two Saturdays ago, the 9As were very disappointed to see their fixture against Riverview washed out last week. Despite this, the boys focused hard in training to make it back-to-back wins against St Aloysius. Despite an early start on an 11 degree morning, the boys came determined to win and got off to a perfect start with two convincing doubles wins. The morning got even better when Tom Thorpe (9Sc) put on a great display of tennis, winning his singles 6-1. Two tight losses in the next two matches were enough to see that Trinity would walk away with the win on games despite a deadlock at three sets all. Special mention should also go to Tom Jin (9Yo) who went down in a courageous match 7-5. The 9Bs start to the season has been far from ideal with three straight losses and a wash out. Despite this, the boys were determined to change the trend of losses and notch their first win against St Aloysius. After a great week of training, the boys were prepared to rip in and give it their all on Saturday. The fixture started tight with one win and one loss from the doubles. A hard-fought match by Steven Kountouris (9Mu) saw St Aloysius take the lead with a 7-5 win. The boys could smell victory and fought very hard, but in the defining moments of the set, Alo s got the better of us winning two tight singles sets 6-4. With the fixture out of reach, Ethan Su (9He) still put his best foot forward, winning 7-5 in a great showing. Special mention should go to Chris Stelza (9Yo), who came up from the Cs and gave it his all winning his doubles match and losing in a tight singles match. Brendan Bechara 9As and 9Bs Coach 8As And 8Bs In the final fixture before the halfway point of the 2017 CAS winter tennis season, the 8As and 8Bs played St Aloysius away from home. As always, Trinity set out to assert their dominance and prove themselves worthy of title contention. It had been a tough season for our A grade players after suffering several narrow losses, an indication of just how competitive the rivalling teams are, so we hoped to change things this week. Deon Kontonis (8Fo) and Kevin Lin (8Sc), one of the most electrifying pairings in the competition, were unremitting as they handed their opponents a fierce 6-0 defeat and a similar occurrence was noted in the other doubles match where Emmanuel Grogan (8Fo) and As debutant Liam Ling (8La) blasted their way to an impressive 6-1. With the doubles comfortably secured, the singles commenced and for Kevin, Emmanuel and Liam it was a continuation of the start that they had made. Kevin dominated a much bigger and more powerful opponent in a 6-1 snip, Emmanuel s exuberance enabled him to cruise to a 6-1 win and Liam showed why he deserves to be a permanent As player, dismantling his opposition 6-0. Deon had a harder day at the office, though, going down 4-6 against a very skilful Aloysius player. The result was a comprehensive Trinity win, 5 sets to 1, ensuring the Green Men still have their foot in the door for the premiership. Having played tennis my entire high school life at Trinity, I can say with the utmost confidence that I have never experienced a team as predominant as the almighty 8Bs! Heading into Saturday s fixture undefeated was already an incredible achievement, but the young men looked to further that and it is safe to say that the boys put on a true spectacle. Justin Yang (8WH) and Richard Collins (8Mu) were in red-hot form to record a 6-2 victory, while next door the thunderous pair of Luka Saxena (8He) and Sam Vickery (8WJ) played scintillating tennis to nab a 6-0 win. The singles matches were nothing short of a white-wash, with all four of our boys winning 6-0 a truly incredible achievement that I was extremely proud to witness. 38 class that they exhibited. As a result, the Bs were granted a 6-0 win, dropping only 2 out of 38 games. Week in and week out these boys have trained hard and played their matches even harder. Their continued success is a credit to their passion for tennis. We have now hit the halfway point with 4 wins, 1 washout and 0 losses, and I am excited for what the future holds for these Trinitarians. Harrison Gai 8As and 8Bs Coach 7As And 7Bs The Year 7 A and B tennis teams both came away with convincing wins against St Aloysius-- the 7 As winning 4-2 and the 7 Bs winning 6-0. Martin Wong (7Ta) and Max Nguyen (7Yo) played fantastic tennis and are still undefeated in both doubles and singles. A tough game though, for Joshua Alha (7Ho), going down 1-6. The player of the weekend goes to Matthew Nicolas (7Ke) winning his singles 6-1 against a very tough opponent. The year 7Bs had their best round yet, not dropping a set with all the boys playing amazing tennis. James Hardiman (7Sc) and Logan Ng (7WJ) won their singles 6-4. 40 Cross Country Barker Invitation Saturday 27 May 2017 Barker Invitation, 27/5/2017, Nth Ryde Common. It has been an action and incident packed week for the Trinity Cross Country fraternity. It began on Friday night as the Cross Country bus took out a green (an appropriately green) junction box near the Cooks River and triggered the collapse of the Inner West electricity network. Well it payed dividends for our 14 years runners as they were shocked and fully charged for the next the days ahead. Apparently I have it on good authority that it also improved the dancing of a number of the Cross Country runners who disobeyed Mr Woods desire for pre-race rest on Friday night as they headed off to the Meriden dance. Judging by the lipstick being removed from cheeks, a la Michael Wierum (8He), at the Start Line of the 14s race, in case I accidently caught it on camera no doubt! Anyway, enough silliness, as the racing on Saturday from these fine young Trinitarians was outstanding! Patrick Cantlon (8We) once again went to the pointy end of the race and led the Trinity contingent to the line. He was a solid 4th, but I have the feeling a big one is just around the corner, I certainly don t mind if he saves his best until the CAS XC Championships! William Cooper (8Hi) ran another fine race to be 8th with Theo Christian (8He), running into some form, not far adrift in 10th. Owen Peck (8Fo) impressed yet again as he completed our 14s team. They shared the honours this week with Sydney Grammar in 1st place on 39pts a piece. Other fine runs came from James Kern (8WJ) 32nd, William Martin (8WH) 34th, Caiden Cleary (7St) 38th, Matthew Lubke (7Ta) 44th who displays considerably more endurance and sporting ability than his Middle School Housemaster, Mr Treloar, and Lachie Stubbs (7Ho) who was 52nd. Incidentally, Caiden and Lachie are both racing against many boys who are three years older than them! Nice eh! Our 16s were decimated last week on many fronts. Ethan Brouw (9Ta) and Zac Brown (9Ho) were preparing to go on camp and represented the Trinity Athletics Club in an ANSW Cross Country Relay Event at Miranda. Thomas Spratt (10Mu) and Tyeson Street (11WJ) are currently broken and Benjamin Bishop (10Hi) and Logan Kaye (10Ho) both ran in the Opens race in an effort to secure a spot in the CAS team to take on the GPS. That being said, it gave a few fine and keen runners the opportunity to step up and count as members of the official Trinity 16s team. By the way, let me emphasise that every young Trinity Harrier who dons the Green and White each week is emphatically a member of OUR team! Connor Brackin (9Ta) just got the better of teammate Philip Chan (10He) as they were 37th and 40th respectively. Bill Zhu (10La) was not far behind these two as he was 45th with Blake Toohey (9Ke) finalising our team as they finished 11th. The Open race also included the qualifier for the annual CAS v GPS clash. AS I have already mentioned Benjamin Bishop and Logan Kaye chose to run up and joined the Opens athletes in an effort to get into this prestigious team. Pleasingly both boys made in through into the CAS team as they finished in 17th and 18th places respectively. Jonno Batson (11WH) was next home in 19th to also make it into the CAS team. He is still suffering the effects of the Half Marathon last week as the legs still looked très fatigué! Lelland Hui (11Fo) ran well but needed to back himself earlier as I too thought he was a chance of getting into the CAS team, but alas this was not the case as he finished 23rd. However, he did complete a sweet podium finish for the Opens as they were a collective third. Other notables were Nicholas Hui (11Fo) 43rd, Sebastian Hahn (12St) 49th who caught and passed that charmer from Ashfield, Joshua Roberts (11We) who was 53rd. As mentioned three of our Cross Country athletes were selected to represent CAS in the clash against the GPS next term; Benjamin Bishop, Logan Kaye and Jonno Batson. The Barker Invitation also served as a selection meet for the CAS contingent to head to the CIS Cross Country Championships later in the month. 42 Volleyball vs St Aloysius' Trinity Defeated St Aloysius 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-17) After witnessing a great win from the 3rd VI, the 1sts took to the court and came up against one of the strongest sides St Aloysius have produced in a while. Trinity came out hard in the first set with good serving and consistent play, particularity from middles such as Kristof Bryndum (12Sc). The second set saw Trinity dominate in all areas of the game early on, however, St Aloysius played some outstanding defence and pushed us in the middle of the set. This made for a much more interesting game as we had to fight for every point. It was great to see players such as Ken Zhang (12We) and Luke Powell (10Ho) dominate at the net and make life very difficult for the opposition. All in all a good game from one of the better CAS Schools. The 1st VI now look to playing Newington this coming Saturday as they are meant to be one of the stronger sides within the combined CAS/GPS competition. This game saw unstoppable serving from Ben Holzwart (12WJ) and Ethan Gunaratnam (11Ar) which allowed us to maintain momentum and win points consecutively. The defence was also on point with accurate passes straight to the setter from Piers Connoly (11Ar) and Will Xie (11Fo) that enabled strong finishes from hitters like Calvin Li (11Ar) and Aidan Yeoh (11Sc). A strong win for the boys that s sure to put them in a good position for when they face Newington next week. Jonah Newman (12WJ) 2nd VI Captain Trinity Defeated St Aloysius 2-0 (25-20, 27-25) This week saw St Aloysius play host to Trinity who were eager to continue their good form. The 3rds showed off their skill in the first set with consistency throughout the court yet with some unforced errors, bought the opposition back into the game. Good setting from Andrew Gabriel (10HI) and spiking by Alan Nader (10WJ) helped Trinity claim the first set. Trinity were determined to the end the game with a second set win which would turn out to be one of the most exciting sets we have ever played this season. St Aloysius took a strong lead which left Trinity trailing by 12 points With strong, and encouraging, words by our coach Angus Webster, the 3rds were pumped to bring the game back with great intensity from the whole team. Crucial touches to keep the ball alive resulted in trinity winning 11 points to St Aloysius s two. At a timeout from the opposition saw Trinity get even more pumped. 46 CIS Diving Championships nd place Matthew Lang (12La), 1st place Thomas York (12Hi). Trinity divers continued to do well at the CIS diving championships with some exceptional results. All boys had outstanding performances with the following boys going through to the NSW All Schools on the 12th May Henry Ward (7Du), had an outstanding performance particularly under the circumstances. Henry had a skate board accident prior to CIS and dived with a broken finger, landing all his dives feet first to win bronze in the 13yrs springboard event and 4th in the 13/14 yrs platform event. Tom York (12Hi) had an outstanding performance to win gold in the 17yrs Platform and silver in the 17 yrs springboard event. Sam Fricker (9Fo) continued to impress all that were there with a superb display of diving to outclass all his opponents to win gold in the 15/16yrs platform and gold in the 15yrs springboard event. Henry Ward (7Du) also had an outstanding performance to win gold in the 13yrs springboard event. Aston Forster (9Yo) and Matthew Wang (7Ar) both performed extremely well to finish 4th in their event. This was a great effort from both boys. Matthew Lang continued to display great resilience and courage to dive for qualification for PSG. We are very proud of these boys who have worked with commitment and great courage to achieve such excellent results at this level of competition. Well done on an exceptional championship. Pacific School Games 2017 As a result of these outstanding performances at the All Schools Championships the following Trinity boys have been selected to represent NSW at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide 2nd 10th December This is an incredible achievement and we wish them well. They are: Matthew Lang (12La), Thomas York (12Hi), Sam Fricker (9Fo), Henry Ward (7Du), Max Fricker (Year 6) and Mr Lang Coach/Manager. Outstanding Achievement During the holiday break, Sam Fricker was a member of the Australian team that competed at the International Diving Meet in Dresden, Germany. 53 CO-CURRICULAR Mathematics Club Matters It was pleasing to see there were many submissions to and much interest in the problems in Bulletin V from both Middle School and Senior School boys interested in experiencing Mathematics. Every correct solution will go into the draw for the chance to win a major prize at the end of each term. Congratulations to last week s winners, Christian Becvarovski (8Ar) and Stefan Marantos (12Yo) for having the first correct solutions drawn from the Middle School and Senior School boxes. MATHEMATICS CLUB CO-CURRICULAR REQUIREMENTS The intention of this Co-curricular, the Mathematics Club, is to provide enjoyment and training in advanced thinking for recreation. MATHEMATICS CLUB MATTERS COMPETITION FOR ALL BOYS The Mathematics Club at the School is pleased to continue this term with Mathematics Club Matters for all boys interested in experiencing Mathematics. This has been a popular competition for all boys in the school. The boys will have an opportunity to enter either a Middle School Maths Problem or Senior School Maths Problem each week. The boys will attempt on their own paper one problem each week within their year group of either Middle School or Senior School and will have until Monday lunch-time (1.15pm) to enter their submission at the Mathematics Department office. All boys will need to place their name and House group with their submission. There is a permanent box placed outside in the Mathematics Department for each problem. The first correct solution drawn from each box on Monday at 1.30pm will be the winner, with the names published weekly in the Mathematics Club Matters section of the Head Master s Bulletin. NEW International Journal And Proceedings Of Young Archimedes CALL For Student Papers The Mathematics Club has initiated a new and unique Journal and Proceedings of Young Archimedes which publishes academic online papers of secondary students in the fields of Mathematics Applications and provides a forum to exchange mathematical ideas, activities, and/or sharing and interpreting high school research. Manuscripts will be reviewed by the Editor, in consultation with the Associate Editors, to decide whether the paper will be considered for publication in the Journal. Issues are scheduled to be published in June and December. An electronic version of each issue is posted to the Trinity Grammar School Mathematics Club web site as a formal publication. 60 Society of the Arts Michael Kieran Harvey in concert A champion of Australian music and himself a composer, Michael Kieran Harvey regularly commissions new Australian music and has performed with Australia s leading contemporary music ensembles and orchestras. Born in Sydney, he studied piano with Alan Jenkins, Gordon Watson, and at the Liszt Academy, Budapest, under Sándor Falvai. Now based in Tasmania, his career has been notable for its diversity and wide repertoire. He has especially promoted the works of Australian and contemporary composers and recorded many solo CDs on various labels.
