3 BOUND inaugural year in the american athletic conference Not entirely unlike the nation that provides its namesake, the American Athletic Conference was born from an ideal in which members with ambitious goals are provided with the means to succeed in their quests for excellence. With roots that extend to three conferences, the American Athletic Conference membership in consists of 11 institutions: the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, East Carolina University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, the University of Memphis, the University of South Florida, Southern Methodist University, Temple University, Tulane University and The University of Tulsa. The U.S. Naval Academy joins the ranks for football in the American Athletic Conference only beginning with the 2015 season. Tulsa has familiar foes dotting the 2014 football schedule with the likes of Houston, East Carolina, Memphis, SMU, Tulane and UCF, all former members of Conference USA. In addition, Tulsa plays South Florida for the first-time ever and renews a series with Temple in which the two teams haven t played since the 1990s. 4 G a m e D ay T r a d it io n s WAVE the flag TU will introduce this tradition for the 2014 football season. At this year s football home opener on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m., Hurricane Flags will be distributed at the gates to the first 10,000 fans. Prior to the intro video, fans will be prompted to WAVE THEIR FLAGS! at which point, fans will wave their flags in anticipation of the teams entrance onto the field. Fans will be encouraged to bring their flags back to the remaining home games to be part of the Wave the Flag tradition. The Hurricane Flags will be available for purchase at the TU Bookstore throughout the 2014 football season. TU Team Walk On game day, Tulsa football fans are encouraged to line 8th Street/ Glenn Dobbs Drive approximately two hours and 15 minutes prior to kickoff to cheer on the Golden Hurricane football team as they make their way from Sharp Chapel to H.A. Chapman Stadium. Hurricane Alley Hurricane Alley at Chapman Commons is the location for all your pre-game fun and entertainment for TU Football in Live music stage, inflatable games, face tattoos, food and drinks make Hurricane Alley the place to be before the game. Hurricane Alley opens three hours prior to kickoff. TFCU Cane cafe Join us this season at the Tulsa Federal Credit Union (TFCU) Cane Café. Fans will have the opportunity to purchase food and drinks at this covered location on Chapman Commons. The menu will be provided by Cherry Street staple, Full Moon Café. 12 H.A. C h a p m a n S ta d iu m Skelly Field at H.a. Chapman Stadium Skelly Stadium received a new name in April 2007, changing to Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium. The stadium underwent a major facelift in the summer of On September 20, 2008, Tulsa opened the renovated stadium with a victory over New Mexico. When the stadium was constructed in 1930 it was originally named Skelly Field. The name changed in 1947 to Stadium when the north end zone seats were added. Skelly Field has been the home field for University of Tulsa football for the past 84 seasons. The stadium opened on October 4, 1930 with a game against the University of Arkansas. Although it had a seating capacity of 14,500, records show that 13,000 spectators were on hand for the game. On the opening kickoff of the first game, Arkansas fumbled and end Johnny Potts recovered for Tulsa. Billy Boehm scored the first touchdown in the north end zone of the stadium on the first play from scrimmage. Later, Chet Benefiel scored the first touchdown in the south end zone. Tulsa went on to win the contest by a score of Since that day, some of college football s greatest stars and teams have graced Skelly Field, including Tulsa s own Glenn Dobbs in the 1940s, Jerry Rhome and Howard Twilley in the 1960s, future All-Pro receivers Steve Largent and Drew Pearson in the 70s, the 1980s Palomino Express of Michael Gunter and Ken Lacy, the 1991 Freedom Bowl Championship Team and the many bowl teams of the 2000s. Opponents the likes of Sammy Baugh, Ollie Matson, Bob Fenimore, Walt Garrison, Gino Toretta, Keith Jackson and Ladainian Tomlinson are a few of the games greatest to step on the Skelly Field turf.
