Football has the power to change lives, and with Football United we want to change the lives of women and children across the country and relegate domestic violence once and for all. Domestic violence affects everyone, from the 750,000 children who witness it every year, to the two women who are killed by a current or former partner every week, to the countless friends and families of those being abused. Fear and acceptance are two of the biggest reasons domestic violence continues. But together we can speak out for those who are too afraid to. We are asking you to join with us to make a positive difference now to raise awareness and reduce the amount of domestic violence in the future. 2 Why it matters Football is an incredibly important part of our communities, which gives clubs a lot of social responsibility. Domestic violence against women increases after football matches and is prevalent throughout society. By joining forces with Women s Aid, your club can: show its commitment to corporate social responsibility; demonstrate support for the third of football fans who are women; and help young fans and players grow up with healthy attitudes to relationships. Clubs and other footballing bodies are often criticised for the way a minority of players, managers, and fans talk about and treat women. Public pressure has been growing for the football community to act on sexism and violence against women. Football United gives you the platform to speak out publicly against domestic violence, and show that you are representing the majority of your fans by making your club a place where perpetrators of domestic abuse are not welcome. When England lost 4-1 to Germany, domestic violence reports increased by 29% - however on the two games in the tournament that they drew, there was no noticeable impact overall. BBC News research from 2012 Euro tournaments The facts are just so depressing - I love football, and I love the World Cup, and we all want to ignore the bad parts of the game. And this is one of them. I fi nd it diffi cult to comprehend violence of any type - let alone domestic violence. And after hearing the stories of victims through my work with Women s Aid, I have a tiny insight into a desperate world. I am proud to support this campaign. It s not complicated, just don t abuse anyone - physically or emotionally. 3 Take part in Football United Join us and become part of the Football United campaign. Sign the Club pledge - us to confi rm your support Put up posters and share the leafl ets - print ready artwork is available from our website. Provide a supportive quote for media work. Donate an offi cial club scarf: we would like to have a scarf from every club which has signed the pledge for promotional photoshoots. Donate a signed football shirt signed by all or some of your players: this would be used to support funds raised by a charity auction. Provide a photo opportunity for our celebrity ambassadors and/or case studies with players and managers at training ground or home. Promote the campaign in match programmes, through your website and social media presence including a link for fans to buy a season ticket. Showcasing your support We are working with the media to publicise the campaign, and of course sharing news of our new signups (23,000 followers), on a dedicated Facebook page and in our Football United newsletters going to 12,000 subscribers. 4 Pledge to make a difference The Premier League s William Bush signing the Football United Supporter Pledge. We re asking every club to get involved by signing the Football United Club Pledge sending the message that domestic violence has no place in football. To send a clear message in our club that violence against women and children is completely unacceptable. To break the silence that allows domestic violence to continue - to talk about it and raise awareness of the support available to those directly affected. To provide positive role models to younger people in our community, encouraging healthy and non-abusive relationships. To share news of our joint work with Football United Against Domestic Violence. To take the pledge just us to confi rm your support, and we ll add your club name to the list on our website! Club logos and pictures are very welcome. At The FA we know what enormous power the footballing community has to make positive change and we welcome this important campaign. We are keen to promote social change through football and our new Inclusion Advisory Board already supports well known campaigns such as Kick It Out and Football v Homophobia; we are proud to now add Football United Against Domestic Violence to that list. Domestic violence affects all of our society and football, especially as the World Cup approaches, has the potential to reach a huge proportion of the public. We can all make a difference by signing up to the Football United Against Domestic Violence campaign - clubs, fans and players - to bring domestic violence out from behind closed doors. 5 Hold a Football United event Your club can get involved with the Football United Campaign by organising your own fundraising activities., or encouraging your supporters to do their own! Here are a few fun ways to raise money: Charity Football Match Bring a competitive element into your fundraising by organising a charity football match or 5-a-side tournament within your league. Spectators can join in the fun by holding a sweepstake to predict the winning team. Football Friday Ask your team supporters to hold a football themed mufti day. Ask them to set amount of money to wear your team s football kit or colours for the day, or Football United team colours! Football Record Breakers Create your own record breakers competition challenge players, friends and family to see how many keepie-uppies they can do. Charge a small fee to enter the challenge that you can donate to Women s Aid. Or see if you can beat Nikolai Kutsenko (UKR) who juggled a regulation football for 24 and a half hours nonstop with his feet, legs and head, without the ball ever touching the ground! Ask your fans to text to donate Organise a mass text to donate at the beginning of each football match.
