Thank you to Kyle and Debbie Brunk, also Michael and Barbara Nowak for a successful Harbor Bash. They had a great crew to make the weekend happen. Thank you to all who helped out. Our 1 st Packer Game we were fed by the 4 R s (Ilks), from what I have been told the brisket was fantastic. Another thanks to Paige and Justin Hans along with Cheryl Rybka for a fun filled Movie Night. Finally, Cheryl and Marc Rybka had a very successful SMYC Auction. Mr. Doug (I could sell ice to Eskimo s) Boville was an amazing auctioneer. Thanks again to everyone that donated the fine auction items, worked the auction, and bought these treasures. The bad news boats are coming out of the water in just a few weeks. Bryan Gahan has been working putting a schedule for the Haul Out. It is the sad side of the season but has to be done. Remember you are required clean up your piers no lines, water hoses, electrical cord left, and pier posts out of the water. The Lake Michigan Water Level is showing that levels are going to be up again and the threat of ice damage will be a concern. If you have any questions, please contact Randy Kempowski for guidance if you don t know how to do something on your pier ASK! Finally, October is our election month. It is our time as a Club to ensure we have the correct Leadership team in place to move the Club forward now and into the future. Mike Gengler is the Chair of the Nomination Committee, please contact Mike as soon as possible if you are interested in serving you Club. 3 The first Harbor Bash was a great success due to the assistance of so many Members. With so many pitching in to help no one was overburdened or overworked. Thanks to all Members who help in one way or another. Every little bit of assistance is appreciated. However, there are always a few Members that go above and beyond the normal volunteer. It makes planning and running a large event like Harbor Bash a breeze when you can count on people to handle a portion of an event with just a simple request. Our Club is very fortunate to have Members that accept these duties and see them through to the end. Special THANKS go out to: John Nowicki - For setting up the tent, stage, beer wagon and outside bar. Paul Mozejewski - Managed the main bar, outside bar, bartenders, and ensured we had an adequate supply of liquid refreshments. Tom and Meg Ciurlik - For stocking up the necessary supplies and many of the raffle prizes. Barb and Mickey Nowak - For the always wonderful Steak Dinner on Saturday night. Chef Bob Ilk - For preparing the food and grilling over 160 delicious steaks to perfection. Dona Cieczka - Who made the Wheel of Fortune possible and ran it with such success. John and Dawn Simmons - For the wonderful Hangover Brunch. Thank you to all Members who rounded up prizes, gift certificates and donations for our Wheel of Fortune raffles. The extra prizes will be raffled off at future parties and Packer games. Of course, an event is a success only if people attend. Even with the marginal weather we served a record number of steak dinners. And as the day progressed more and more people came for the music, refreshments and camaraderie. Thanks to all Club Members, family and friends who attended and made this event a success. Debbie and Kyle Brunk Harbor Bash Recap Steak Night Thanks 2017 Once again the members and friends of SMYC made Steak Night a huge success. We sold out of tickets by 5pm. We broke last year s record on the amount of steaks served as well as the profit for the meal. Over 160 steaks were grilled by 8:00pm. Thanks to everyone who helped on Saturday. We had many members that work every year and a few new members on our crew and it was a ton of fun. Too many names to mention but you know who you are and your help and support were very much appreciated by the club. Thanks to Bob Ilk and his team that worked the grill, every steak was cooked to perfection. The profit for the evening was $2, Thanks again for all of your support. Review of The Death and Life of the Great Lakes by Dan Egan At the LMYA rendezvous in Port Washington last June, the attendance gift for those registered for the rendezvous was a book on the Great Lakes written by a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter which may be in line for a Pulitzer Prize. He had covered the lakes for many years as a reporter before deciding to write this book. In the introduction and first chapter he skillfully gives us a picture of the geology and scale of the lakes, comparing them to other fresh water bodies around the world. If you only read these two sections you will gain a greater appreciation for this unique resource right under our own boats here at the club. The book has three main parts, each with 3 to 4 chapters. Part one covers the unique geology of the lakes and ways people in a growing nation sought to make use of this natural resource. It explains how invasive species came in through the seaway: sea lamprey, alewives, zebra mussels, and quagga mussels, covering the damage they did and how they were fought. It shows how the commercial fishing economy declined and how non-native species like salmon were brought in to build up the recreational fishing economy. Part two covers how the continental divide was breached so that Lake Michigan could empty into the Mississippi River and become a back door for invasive species. The ongoing debate about whether Asian Carp have entered the lakes is discussed and how evidence to prove this is generated. I had never heard of the Great Black Swamp before, which is a large wetland off the west end of Lake Erie extending into Ohio and Indiana. It is now considered an ecologically crucial area that was drained over several decades to make more arable land. That, the pollution of the Cuyahoga River, and near death of Lake Erie make fascinating reading. Part three is about the effects of climate change on the lakes and the schemes to siphon off fresh water to areas outside the water shed in a world that is becoming desperate for this increasingly precious resource. There are ongoing political battles about the use of the Great Lakes. As methods to scientifically study man s effect on the lakes improve, it becomes more evident what a fragile and complex ecology we have here. Sewage systems and shipping canals affect the lakes. Native micro organisms, native fish, and native plants are affected by invasive species. These things continue to greatly change the ecology of the lakes. Recently a small item in the news about an airliner in trouble made me aware that we should all show greater concern for the lakes. Airliners with a mechanical problem will dump fuel to prevent a fire during landing. Guess where the airliner in this article had to dump its fuel? Right in Lake Michigan. I know for the safety of the people on board that this had to be done. But it was not stated if the airline had to pay for any damage to the lake or if any attempt at cleanup was made or possible to make. This activity, and all the other things being done to the lakes, should be of concern to all of us as citizens and voters. 8 South Milwaukee Yacht Club 101 Marshall Avenue South Milwaukee, WI Basil Butter Doesn t the basil from the Farmer s Market and your garden smell awesome! Here is a way to save the aroma and taste. It s perfect to take a scoop or two out of the freezer and have a taste of summer on the boat or in your home. Recipe makes 4 dozen basil scoops 1-1/2 cups loosely packed fresh basil ¾ lb. butter, softened 1-1/2 teaspoon lemon or lime juice 1-1/2 teaspoon white pepper ½ teaspoon garlic salt In a food processor, chop basil. Add butter, juice and seasonings; blend until smooth. Drop by half-tablespoons onto a cookie sheet; freeze. Remove from cookie sheet and store in freezer bags. Use to flavor chicken, fish or vegetables. Tips: Use a small scoop to portion the seasoned butter. Substitute fresh chives for the basil. Serve over a grilled steak. The juice keeps the herbs fresh and green. Try a mix of favorite herbs, such as rosemary and thyme.
