1 Web: TIPS to SPEED UP PLAY: If it s your honour, hit your tee shot, then mark your card while others are teeing off. After teeing off, walk directly to your ball and think about your next shot as you move towards your ball. Hit a provisional ball if your ball might be lost or out of bounds. Keep up with the group in front. Read the green & line up your putt as soon as you reach the green, don t wait until it s your turn to putt Finish putting out, rather than marking your ball close to the hole. NOMINATION FORMS out soon The annual ANZAC DAY dawn service was once again held at the Golf Club, thanks to the perseverance of our manager Kerry in gaining the support of the Dept of Defence. A large number of early risers attended the service, together with soldiers from B Squadron 1st Brigade & the Humpty Doo Scouts. A scrumptious breakfast cooked by our expert BBQ chefs was enjoyed after the service, and Waldo the bush poet entertained the gathering with a rendition of his favourite poems, followed by a game of Two-Up. The ANZAC Day Ambrose was well supported as usual, with a full field of enthusiastic players hitting off throughout the day. Congratulations to all the winners, and to everyone who managed to finish the course! Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the day a great success... a terrific day was had by all. 2 The NINETEENTH HOLE RESTAURANT is now open for lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11:30am 2:30pm. The lunch menu includes a wide selection of dishes, there is sure to be something to please everyone. Why not give the cook a break... come down to the golf club & enjoy a delicious lunch in air conditioned comfort in the restaurant, or out on the verandah where you can watch all the action on the 18th green. The kids can have fun in the playground too! Good luck to all our Vets who are playing in the NT Vets Championships at Palmerston this week. And good luck also to the Humpty Doo players competing in the NT Men s Amateur Open at Marrara next weekend. The new solar system is currently being installed on the roof of the clubhouse. It is anticipated that this initiative will help offset increased power expenses at the club in the future. The very popular HUMPTY DOO OPEN was held last weekend, with more than 80 players from local clubs and interstate entering the competition. Our major sponsor ALLIED PICKFORDS has been supporting Opens at Humpty Doo for 20 years, a remarkable effort! Many thanks to Chris Wilkins for his continuing interest in promoting Humpty Doo Golf Club, & special thanks to Denise, who did a great job providing the BBQ & manning the drinks stop once again over the weekend. Thanks also to our Match Committee, club volunteers & staff for your efforts in ensuring the event ran smoothly. Congratulations to the winners: Men s Champion: Peter Hargreaves (Peter has played in many Humpty Doo Opens over the past 20 years & was excited to achieve his first win here!!!) Ladies Champion: Stacey Nimmo (Stacey joined Humpty Doo as a full member after her round on Saturday... welcome Stacey!) THE NINETEENTH HOLE RESTAURANT at HUMPTY DOO GOLF CLUB Open for dinner from 6:00pm every night Now open for LUNCH from 11:30am -2:30pm Friday, Saturday & Sunday Christine, Val & Ricci travelled to Alice Springs recently to compete in the NT WOMEN S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. Val & Christine managed 7th place in the Foursomes event... spending a lot of time out in the dirt & rocks rather than on the fairways was their undoing. The weather was perfect for the first 3 days of competition, & on Day 1 Ricci came runner up on a countback in the B Grade nett event. Unfortunately rain set in on the final day, making conditions difficult on an already tricky course (it hadn t rained in Alice for 11 months!). However, the rain & mud didn t deter Christine, who won the Day 3 B Grade nett. All the Humpty Doo ladies came home with daily prizes. Well done girls!

Bintan Lagoon Resort was developed about 20 years ago with 2 world class championship golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Ian Baker-Finch within 50 metres of the resort foyer. Died and gone to heaven!! Some of the Bintan Tour Group and their caddies ready to tee off. The tour leader, Chris Wilkins and his lovely wife Denise had previously stayed there on their return from the UK and enjoyed it so much we decided to join them for a return visit. Gary and Debbie Weir, Ron & Kay Izett,
5 Pauline and her friend Derek Dearman and just to unbalance everything, myself, Shane Elliott travelling alone made up the tour party of 9. Bintan is just a 40 minute ferry ride from Singapore and we arrived feeling reasonable not having slept for 36 hours (that s because we didn t fly Jetstar). Once checked into our rooms, the boys made whatever excuses they needed, grabbed their clubs and headed off to play the Baker-Finch course. Gary s excuse didn t wash with Deb and he had to stay behind to have a Nanna nap. What a course! 18 holes carved out of the jungle with everything you d expect from a championship course. Elevated tees (a choice of 5 tees on every hole) looking down fairways surrounded by water hazards, interrupted only by bunkers and garden beds with greens the size of the Humpty Doo clubhouse that only the caddies had a hope of reading. Needless to say, no-one broke 95 that day. Jetlag apparently! The resort offered very well airconditioned (cold) rooms, 5 restaurants, a huge pool with a swim up bar and a kitchen offering small meals, a beach and countless activities other than golf apparently! Day 2 was an early buffet breakfast and off to golf to play the Jack Nicklaus course which was very cleverly overlapped with the Baker-Finch course but had the advantage of three holes that approached, ran alongside and then left the seaside. It was the prettiest of the two courses but debate raged for all 14 days as to which was the hardest. Days 3 7 were spent, you guessed it, playing either one course or the other. The only variable was that Kay and Deb joined us every few days for a hit and Pauline tagged along to make sure Derek didn t smoke. We discovered early that a sleep in was not an option because at 11.00am every day, a thunder storm rolled in with lightning closing the courses for an hour or so. On Friday we ventured 20 mins down the track to the Club Med resort Ria golf course. This course had all the same characteristics water, jungle infested with Cobras and Monkeys, bunkers galore, gardens and seaside holes, but was oh so stunning. The fairway grass was quite different, offering a superb surface from which to hit a golf ball. Saturday Day 7 was a rest day. Gary had sore feet (fishing accident) Shane had a flu??? and everyone needed a rest from Derek who was winning the stableford comp nearly every day. On Sunday we returned to Ria for an afternoon game (cheaper if you teed off after 1.00pm) and finished just as it was getting dark. We stayed and enjoyed a This looks like a very bad case of the flu! meal on the verandah before being bussed home. Chris was in the bad books for being so late, but as he does, he talked his way out of it very quickly. Monday was yes you guessed it golf! We had to cut the drinks short after golf to have Gary back early so that he and Deb could catch the bus for the Ferry to head home. Deb had to go back to work to pay for Gary s $25.00 scotches. For the last four days we managed to get in a game of golf each day which was a nice way to finish the stay. Apparently the girls did do some other stuff whilst we were toiling away on the golf course, but since I had the sense to travel alone, I didn t need to know what it was that they did I m sure they told me, but for the life of me, it seems it wasn t important enough for me to recall. Great trip was had by all and we d all like to return, but perhaps for a shorter period. It was suggested that the boys played too much golf but I still want to know why the hell we had a rest day! FUNNY... After the golf... A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of quid for dinner. The man took out his wallet, extracted ten pounds and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?" "No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied. "Will you spend this on green fees at a golf course instead of food?" the man asked. "Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man. "I haven't played golf in 20 years!" "Well," said the man, "I'm not going to give you money. Instead, I'm going to take you home for a shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife." The homeless man was astounded. "Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that? The man replied, "That's okay. It's important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up drinking and golf."
