NEW, THIS YEAR: GOLF & SWIM CAMP COMBO AGES The new Golf & Swim Camp s day consists of golf in the morning and swimming in the afternoon. Spring Mill Athletic Club s Summer Youth Camp is back! Children can look forward to an active day full of activities and sports in a safe and caring environment. These fun-filled days will help children develop lasting friendships, gain confidence and self-esteem. Youth Summer Camp is for ages 5-13 years. Start by assessing where you re at now, as well as, your strengths and weaknesses. Set new goals. Next, take a look at where you want to be. What are some specific, realistic goals you can set to improve your fitness level? Increase the intensity of your workout: Move faster. Walk more briskly or start running if you ve been walking or jogging. The faster you move your body, the more work you ll do within a given time. Increase resistance. Increase the pedaling resistance on a cycling bike, for strength training, gradually lift more weight. Cross-train. Participate in a variety of activities, including some that are more demanding or vigorous. Try interval training. This means interspersing short bursts of high-intensity activity (such as a 10-second sprint) with intervals of low- to moderate-intensity activity, such as walking. Buy a Food Scale. Really watch your Portion Control. Once you ve reached a new fitness level, take a moment to congratulations yourself on how far you ve come! This particular shot is made from the apron, which is the shorter cut grass next to the green, so let us now take a six or seven iron and place your hands on the grip without either the interlocking or overlapping grip; a plain ten-finger grip is okay. The V s formed by the index finger and thumb point respectively to the right and the left shoulders. So, hold the club lightly and upright with a crook in the elbows, and your feet will be placed directly under your shoulders with the weight evenly distributed. You will try your best to keep the back-and-forth pendulum swing as low to the ground as you are able. The motion is done primarily with the arms and shoulders. The loft on the face will elevate the ball over the apron grass and allow it to run to the hole. Your body will stay quite still, so next, you will assume a flexed, knockkneed position at address, as this helps the body to remain quiet. This is a virtual putting stroke, keeping the back and forward strokes shorter, rather than longer. The less you do, the better the shot. Try neither to lift the ball nor go under it, as there is no room under the ball. Simply make that low-to-the-ground motion, and the loft on the club face will do the rest. 5 FROM THE GOLF SHOP Brendan Reedy Dear Members: With the golf season finally underway here are a few general reminders: Score Posting Two or more golfers should be posting your scores. Good or bad. Scores for rounds you played by yourself are not acceptable scores for USGA posting purposes. Checking-in Club policy requires every player to check-in in the Golf Shop before they play, whether walking or riding. It is essential for us to know who is on the golf course. If the Golf Shop is closed for the day, players should check-in with the Bag Room staff. Talking Turf Please remember to do your part out on the golf course. It is the golfer s responsibility to fix their ballmark, fill or replace their divot, and to rake their bunker. If you do not own a ballmark repair tool, either pick one up in the pro shop or use a tee. I thank you for your cooperation as will the groups of golfers playing behind you. Dress Code Our dress code for golf remains unchanged. Cargo shorts are not acceptable for golf at Spring Mill. Collared shirts are required and should be tucked in. The dress code is required on both the golf course AND the practice facilities. Please share our dress code with your guests before they arrive to avoid an embarrassing situation. Course Care Our Course Superintendent and his staff are charged with maintaining the golf course. However, the game of golf requires certain actions by the player to help maintain playing conditions. Everyone says they do this, but clearly, there are members at Spring Mill who do not rake bunkers after playing out of them. You know who you are. Everyone also claims they fix their ball marks on the greens, but this too is not being done consistently. Tournaments for all ages & skill levels GAP administers more than 10 handicap events, yearly. Philadelphia s Most Trusted Source of Golf Information Attention golfers 25 years of age or older: registration for the Golf Association of Philadelphia s 35th Middle-Amateur Championship presented by Callaway Golf is open. The event will take place May at Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, Pa. The following venues will host Middle-Amateur qualifiers: Greate Bay Country Club (April 21), Talamore Country Club (April 26), Moselem Springs Golf Club (May 1) and Elmhurst Country Club (May 2). Registration is available exclusively on the Association s website, April 1 marks the official start of the Golf Association of Philadelphia s 2018 season. That means you can post scores from courses in the Philadelphia region to your handicap record. The Association will revise handicaps on the 1st and 15th of each month. For more information regarding score posting, contact Steve Latos, Manager of GHIN Technical Support, at slatos@gapgolf.org. New in 2018, the Golf Association of Philadelphia announces a merger with the Anthracite Golf Association, an organization that promotes golf in the Northeastern Pennsylvania region. As a result of this new merger, all Anthracite services will fall under the GAP umbrella. GAP members are therefore eligible to compete in Anthracite events, save for the organization s Coal Scuttle championships. More information regarding the merger can be found in the Spring 2018 edition of the Golf Association of Philadelphia Magazine. Think your club boasts the best amateur golfers in the Delaware Valley? Prove it by participating in the Golf Association of Philadelphia s Team Championship. The Springhaven Club hosts the event s qualifier on May 29. The top four finishers will earn a spot in the Championship proper, set for June 28 at Manufacturers Golf & Country Club. Those interested in participating in the Team Championship must acquire an entry form from their club professional. Not a scratch golfer? Not a problem. The Golf Association of Philadelphia s Tee it Forward Spring Net Championship, set for June 7 at Coatesville Country Club, is for you. Open to male and female members, it is a handicap event that features an individual net stableford format. No pressure to finish a hole; pick up once you reach your net limit. Also, thanks to the Tee it Forward parameters, you may choose the set of tees you play from based on the length of drive. Registration at org runs through May 24. Whether you re a golfer looking to play for a good cause, or an administrator trying to spread the word, the Golf Association of Philadelphia s Outing Central is the place to find charity golf events. It offers a comprehensive schedule that s easy to navigate. Golfers can play some of the region s finest courses while supporting a worthy cause. Administrators can boost awareness and find an audience of dedicated golfers in Outing Central. And it is free to post! 7 Directions Celebrate Mexican Corn on the Cob Elote Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat. Grill corn until hot and lightly charred all over, 7 to 10 minutes, depending on the temperature of the grill. Spread evenly with mayonnaise. Place corn on aluminum foil, and sprinkle with queso cheese, paprika, chili powder, and cilantro. Serve with a lime wedge. Serves 4.
