Members Update DATE: july 2018 Update # 23 Chairman s Update The Board has recently completed the Club s Strategic Plan for 2018 to This is now available on the notice board and on the club website. I encourage you all to read it. Following on from this the Forward Planning Group have been considering the various options for the club over the next ten years. The Board would like to share these thoughts with the membership and hold an information evening on Tuesday 10th of July which you are invited to attend. The club by- laws are in the final stages of review and will be ready for publication on the club website and notice board very soon. Despite the recent wet weather the use of carts will, whenever possible, be permitted as long as members respect the guidelines that have been put in place and keep carts off the fairways and keep to the higher ground. This will allow all members to continue to enjoy golf over the winter months. Ian Morrison Chairman MEMBER INFORMATION NIGHT DAY/ DATE: TUESDAY 10th JULY VENUE: DLGC TIME: 6pm Manager s Message We have successfully negotiated another financial year with similar returns to the business as last year forecasted. Overall, our green fee and other golf related revenue has been on par with last year, but we have had quite an increase in revenue through the bar, mainly due to increased visitation for dinner. I look forward to building on this next year. We are well & truly into our South West Winter having had high amounts of rainfall recently and plenty more forecast. In consultation with the Course Superintendent, Board, Golf Committee a set of instructions has been developed for users of carts. To minimize damage to the course during this wet weather it is imperative that carts are used very carefully with all instructions from the pro shop to be followed. We have recently updated our strategic plan to 2021 and it is now available to view on the information board in the tavern as well as on the website in the members lounge section. Any feedback you may have on this document is welcomed and can be addressed to board@dunsboroughlakesgolfclub.com.au I would like to thank Olly for all his efforts since joining the team last December. Although it is wet out there at the moment, the improvements in many areas of the course are obvious for all to see. Olly and his family are settling in well to the Dunsborough community but Olly s wife, Natalie, is still looking for work. As a club with many long-standing locals I hope we can collectively use our networks to help Natalie get a job. If anyone knows of anyone who may be in a position to employ Natalie - part time, / casual, / full time in office administration, secretarial duties, retail sales, child care or similar, please contact me and I will be happy to forward on Natalie s CV for consideration. Any help would be most appreciated. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members, volunteers & the Board for all the support I have been given over the first two years in my tenure here at the Club. It has been a challenge but very rewarding at the same time. I look forward to exciting times ahead and many more years here at the Club. Thanks Paul Devaney Club Manager Golf is a game in which you yell "fore," shoot six, and write down five. Paul Harvey

Captain s Report Now that winter has set in, it s a great time to reflect on our last few months. Our new format for the Dunsborough Cup and Club Championships in April involved a few teething problems however we increased participation by 30 players from the previous two years, and Jack s Calcutta was a great kick off on the Saturday night of the cup. Our winners this year were Caroline Morrison and Paul Devaney whose names will be engraved on the perpetual trophies and honour boards. The playoffs the following weekend were riddled with matches finishing on the 18 th including a sudden death play off ending at the 3 rd in the Men s Championship with Nick Ritchie taking out the title over Ross Wheeler. Val Pullen defeated Jan Quinn at the last hole for the Ladies Championship after Jan had her measure earlier in the round. These ladies had an enthralling battle which came down to the last putt of the day. The galleries were once again massive, with everyone treated to a great day s entertainment. Thanks to all those who participated and helped in making it a great couple of weekends of golf. We also had the playoffs for the Master Medallist s in April and congratulations goes to Gemma Lybrand and Frank Horwood. In May Lenny Thomas, Sandra Haunold and their team pulled off another brilliant event with the Dunsborough Lakes Pro Am. With an early threat of bad weather, the day turned out to be great for golf. What a great opportunity for our members to tee it up with some of the best young pros in the country. If you haven t already read the write up on the PGA website On the 12 th of July we are hosting 18 holes of the Drummond Golf 54 Hole Junior Classic. We have a field of 82 players teeing off from 9am to 10am. We really would appreciate volunteers to help and if you can please call Paul Devaney at the pro shop or Gary Ebert on Big thanks also to Sue Reynolds, Gary Ebert, Marty Thomas and team in the great work they have done in developing our junior members and bringing us home a win in the regional titles. In finishing off, make sure you familiarise yourselves with the winter rules on the boards and outside the pro-shop. You may need them! Here s an interesting read about water and bunkers: Happy winter golfing. Captain Gaz. MASTER MEDALLIST The Master Medallist presentations will be held this Saturday 7 th July after Saturday s comp. Babs Morgan will be presenting the annual trophies to this years winners: Frank Horwood and Gemma Lybrand. The wet weather sees some members preferring the comfort of a warm fire rather than braving the elements so we encourage any members that are not playing on Saturday to come down and celebrate our Master Medallists.

From the Greens Greens We have had a total 292mm of rain since the later part of May and all things considered the greens are standing up reasonably well. The autumn coring of the greens had helped minimise any surface water which is vital in keeping the turf healthy. As expected Poa Annua numbers become quite prevalent at this time of year. I recently took a trip to Mandurah Country Club in order to meet their Course Superintendent and have a look at their Poa eradication program. With the use of Plant Growth Regulators the Poa plant can be suppressed in order to allow for the more desirable Bent grass to dominate. The key to success with this method is regular sand dusting of the greens in order to maintain a true smooth putting surface. I will be implementing the program on our course in the spring and look forward to seeing what results we get. Fairways and Tees We recently hired a trenching machine to install a new irrigation communication cable in the 10 th rough as well as shearing the numerous tree roots encroaching on our tee boxes and green surrounds. As the removal of these roots is not possible we have chosen to break them up as much as possible and add a layer of fresh root zone to the tees. This enables us to re - level the tees as we go and potentially increase the teeing off space. We are planning on doing a more intensive re- design of the 7 th tee complex utilising the material we will gather from our Bent Grass nursery. Whilst we had the trencher on site we also installed a number of catch pit drains in areas that were pooling up badly. The current weather has given me a good opportunity to assess which areas of the course are problematic and start to put some suggestions forward on how we plan to address these problems moving forward. Bunkers Our bunker volunteer team will continue this month with the next bunker on the list to be upgraded and I would like to shout out a big thanks to all the help we ve had from the volunteers in cleaning up the course after the recent storm events. Oliver Bell Course Superintendent TOPDRESSING AND BALL ROLL By Anne Streich and Roch Gaussoin Topdressing has become standard in golf course management. For years, many golf course superintendents practiced heavy topdressing in the spring and fall after core aeration. In the last 10 to 15 years, many of them have added a lighter, more frequent sand topdressing in their greens management program. Research has shown that greens that are not topdressed have poorer turf quality than those that are topdressed as little as two times per year. Greens that are not topdressed become thatchy and puffy, and can result in scalping and shorter ball-roll distances. Topdressing has several benefits. It Produces a smooth, firm putting surface. Reduces the thatch layer. Allows reduced mowing heights. Protects the crown. Increases ball-roll distance. With the continued demand from golfers for greater ball-roll distances, superintendents have begun topdressing more often throughout the growing season. Light, frequent topdressing is defined as application of 2 to 3 cubic feet per 1,000 square feet of material every 10 to 14 days throughout the growing season. It is believed that this level of topdressing will provide a smooth, firm and uniform surface, resulting in longer ball-roll distances. For this reason, you should apply topdressing material 10 to 12 days before you want the surface to achieve its best surface (for member-guest or other big events). This gives the topdressing material enough time to settle into the turf. Dry topdressing material will easily settle into the turf canopy with just a light brushing or light irrigation. Is it worth the effort? Topdressing provides a better surface for ball roll because it creates a firm, smooth, uniform surface that exerts minimal resistance on the ball as it rolls across a green. Rather than applying topdressing material heavily at the beginning and end of the growing season and hoping that it provides an adequate surface throughout the golf season, light, frequent topdressing has been used to provide a better surface to putt on throughout the growing season.

Course Report Cart use & Course access: In consultation with the Course Superintendent, Board and Golf Committee a set of rules for cart use during very wet periods is as follows. Two carts maximum per group of four players (Please share carts or try to ensure your playing partners are walking!) Stay on designated cart paths do not drive near tee boxes, close to bunker edges or greens Carts not to be driven on the fairways, please drive in the rough and walk to your ball If you must cross the fairway do so at a high point Be aware of the ground conditions and drive slowly Observe the course signs showing cart directions and avoid areas that have been roped off or have hoops. These rules have been put in place to help maintain the course and every little bit of care you take has the potential to increase the enjoyment of the game for your fellow members. Paul has advised that if these requests are not carried out then carts will have to be banned on certain days. We have now made numerous requests for members to phone the pro shop before going out on the course, members are still ignoring this request and quite frankly it is not good enough, we have enough trouble with the public doing it but expect better of the membership. Regarding the public on the course if any members witness the public accessing our course to play golf (without paying) and misusing carts we would appreciate you advising the pro shop immediately so they can call our volunteer marshalls. Volunteers: Our fantastic band of volunteers Tuesday men/bunker boys/rough mowers continue to provide great support to our small maintenance team. Over the past months all the trees on the course have been crowned not only making the course more attractive but making it much easier to mow around these trees, they are often out there working in not the most pleasant of conditions. (see photo) Bunkers: Peter Willers spoke at his sponsor day regarding the renovation of bunkers Peter, Geoff Jones & Chris Carter very generously kicked off SPONSOR A BUNKER programme to the tune 0f $600 they have been joined by Allan Kay, Colin Johnson, Phil De Garis & Owen Nuttridge for a bunker plus Alan Jones and party for number three. There will be a white board in place in the clubhouse showing before and after bunker photos with the procedure being used. We encourage members to get a group together, pick a bunker to be renovated and help the club out in what is a very expensive part of course maintenance. Trees: Members will have noticed a small number of trees on the course in proximity to tee boxes and at the back of the fifth green have red dots on them. These trees have been identified by our course superintendent as the culprits spreading tree roots into the tees and/or heading towards the fifth green. While there have been suggestions from members that a root guard system could be used, research says this would not work in our case. For an area like a tee box, it would have to be completely surrounded by the material, which would cut off drainage, depth of digging required would be considerable, and there is no guarantee that this would solve the problem as tests have shown roots can find their way underneath or over the top of these structures. The plan is to remove the problem trees, renovate the tees concerned that is remove the roots, level the tees and lay new turf. Finances permitting new trees with a non-invasive root system will be planted in their place. Rest assured that removal of any trees on our course are decisions not taken lightly. Owen Nuttridge Chair of Course

House Report Winter has hit with a vengeance which is great for our dams but not so good for our golf! Time to be thinking of indoor activities like making the most of our great restaurant morning coffees, lunches, and evening meals. Bree and Dale are still doing a great job, not only providing great restaurant meals but catering for our own functions (eg Pro-am, Summer Cup) and bringing in the community with group lunches and private functions. All of this is bringing in much needed revenue over the bar as sales continue to rise. On the rare occasion that there is a private function on a Saturday night, there may be the odd grumble if we have to play early and finish up our presentations early. However, I think most club members would agree that the benefit to the coffers of our club, far outweigh a little disruption. A Rum and Ribs night was held recently and enjoyed by all who attended. Surprisingly there were more community members there than club members great to know that the community knows about us but we need to support these nights ourselves as well. If you have any ideas for special events let us know Paul, Bree or myself would love to hear your thoughts. Many of you will have heard that the Board has been looking at replacing our tired old ablution block. Well, I can announce that as of the end of August we will have a brand new toilet block. The decision to spend the money for this in very tight financial times has not been taken lightly. However, we have a growing membership, increasing numbers of visitors and restaurant patronage (all of which we need to survive financially) and our present facilities are no longer up to the task. Unfortunately, we can t wait for a new club house to be built before we do something about this, so we have researched the most cost-effective solution to carry us through till then. A new transportable block which is fully compliant with our liquor licensing requirements will replace the old block. The advantage of the transportable option is that when our clubhouse does materialize we will be able to sell off the ablution block. The new facilities will be a lot more attractive and user friendly than our current block. The garden bed immediately adjacent to the tavern wall (just as far as the verandah entrance), together with the block path, will be removed and resited. The new toilet block will be parallel to the tavern wall and much closer to it than the current block, with ramped decking connecting the tavern and toilet block. The decking will allow wheelchair access to the toilets from both entrances to the tavern. New roofing over the decked area will connect the two buildings, thereby providing covered access between the two. The lifted blocks from the old path will be re-sited behind the new toilet block and link the car park with the path to the driving range, providing access for pedestrians and buggies. A set of steps from the deck will link into this path. The plants removed from the old garden will be used in the new path area. As Bree and Dale are taking holidays for 2 weeks from August 12 th we are planning to carry out the delivery and building works during this time. It is also, obviously, a quieter time on course. There will be some disruption for the period that the works are underway but we hope to still have our regular golf competitions and an operational bar what more do we need (oh, and we ll have some portable loos!) We hope that the garden and path works to be done prior to and on completion of the main work will be something that our loyal band of volunteers and other club members will be able to help with. The main works will be a formal building site, with all the necessary occupational health and safety requirements not the place for vollies. As the time gets closer we will keep you informed further about when and how you may be able to help. As many of you will know by now, Simone, our Bar Manager, has now left us for greener pastures so we wish her well in her new venture. 6 Marketing and Memberships Having recently updated the Club s strategic plan the marketing committee is designing our 12-month marketing plan to achieve the targets set out in the strategic plan. We have undertaken a review of membership categories for the future and presented this to the Board. The committee is investigating appointing an external website manager to simplify the presentation and layout of our website, ensure it is relevant and continues to be regularly updated. We are pursuing quotes and options to improve our signage on Caves Road and above our Bar and Bistro (where the old Tavern currently sign is). We are currently working on creating a visitors database so we can market special offers and directly advertise any special events to our target audience. There is significant work involved in doing this but expect to have this in place in the coming months and look forward to having this additional marketing tool in the future. We continue with our sponsorship of local sporting clubs and groups and have seen some additional visitation already as a result of this sponsorship. We continue to look for someone to replace Richard in writing up the brief golf articles for the local papers if there is a member out there who could help with this please contact Paul Devaney. We have arranged with various clubs in Perth to utilise their social club database to offer packages to entice them to Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club with initial feedback being quite positive. Grant Girdler Juniors Our numbers are steadily increasing with 20 juniors currently participating in the program, ranging from 8 to 15 years of age. As mentioned previously, we run sessions both Monday and Thursday and when a junior enrols, they are welcome to attend both sessions if they wish. Our range of golfers varies from a few who are now ready to obtain their official handicap through to those whose main focus it to make contact with the ball. Where possible, we break into small groups to better support the kids. We have had a very successful year with the Junior League, winning the latest competition. This was very exciting as we were in last place in the previous comp. In the Junior League comp we have a team of 6 (playing 2-man Ambrose) against teams from Busselton, Capel & Bunbury. When a team has more than 6 players, they all get to have a game, even if filling in for another club who may be short of players that week. The pressure will be on now with the other teams keen to knock us off from the top position. From this comp, we have also had two boys graduate into the 9-hole stableford comp running concurrently. Our next round of competition begins in August. There is a Facebook page: SouthWest MyGolf Junior League Shani Waugh from Bunbury is very keen to grow junior golf across the South West and to this end, we are becoming very busy developing pathways for our juniors who wish to continue on into club competitions. At present there are trips to Perth for pennants; development of a SW junior golf academy ( Impact ); September trips to Kalgoorlie to compete in a Junior comp; work to have other SW clubs join in the Junior League and a Corporate Golf day in November to raise funds for the junior development. We feel that we currently have the potential to continue to grow our Juniors into a solid section of our club given the above. It will also work in our favour that we are able to keep the program at a minimal cost to parents by using volunteers. It's good sportsmanship to not pick up lost golf balls while they are still rolling. Mark Twain

DLGC WINTER RULES The following local rules are in operation until further notice. These are on the door of the ProShop and on the noticeboard. LOCAL RULE: COURSE CONDITIONS (Appendix 1 Rule 1A-3) Through the green' is the whole area of the course except: a. The teeing ground and putting green of the hole being played; and b. All hazards on the course." EMBEDDED BALL - THROUGH THE GREEN (Appendix 1 Rule 1A-3a) A ball that is embedded in its own pitch-mark in the ground may be lifted, without penalty, cleaned and dropped as near as possible to where it lay but not nearer the hole. PREFERRED LIES (Appendix 1 Rule 1A-3b) A ball lying on a closely-mown area through the green may be lifted without penalty and cleaned. Before lifting the ball, the player must mark its position. Having lifted the ball, he must place it on a spot within 15 centimetres of and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay, that is not in a hazard and not on a putting green. If the player fails to mark the position of the ball before lifting it, moves the ball-marker prior to putting the ball back into play or moves the ball in any other manner, such as rolling it with a club, he incurs a penalty of one stroke. Note: Closely-mown area means any area of the course cut to fairway height or less, i.e. fairways or the green surrounds (not the rough) CLEANING BALL Through the green a ball may be lifted and cleaned without penalty. The ball must be replaced. Note: The position of the ball must be marked before it is lifted under this Local Rule see Rule (Appendix 1 Rule 1A-3c) ABNORMAL GROUND CONDITIONS (Rule 25-1) (e.g. All wheel ruts and tyre marks, casual water) Except when the ball is in a water hazard or a lateral water hazard player may take relief from interference by an abnormal ground condition as follows: If the ball lies through the green the player must lift the ball and drop it, without penalty, within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief. If a ball is not found in casual water though both the player and marker are 100% certain the ball entered the casual water, the player can take relief back at point of entry to the condition. (i.e. where the casual water starts) You can t go sideways as per the relief allowance if you find your ball in casual water. If the ball can t be found and the player and marker are not 100% sure the ball entered the casual water, then the player must proceed under rule27-1 Ball lost BUNKERS If the ball is in a bunker, the player must lift the ball and drop it either: (a) without penalty, within one club-length of and not nearer the hole, except that the nearest point of relief must be in the bunker and the ball must be dropped in the bunker or, if complete relief is impossible, as near as possible to the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole on a part of the course in the bunker that affords maximum available relief from the condition; or (b) Under penalty of one stroke, outside the bunker keeping the point where the ball lay directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the bunker the ball may be dropped. UNLESS Due to flooding the bunker has been assessed to be GUR and is marked as such (a white stake in the bunker). In this instance as per Rule 25-1b relief may be taken outside the bunker whereby the player must lift the ball and drop it, without penalty, within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief PENALTY FOR BREACH OF ANY OF THESE LOCAL RULES: Match play Loss of hole; Stroke play Two strokes. The Match Committee may suspend, or abandon play due to inclement weather or lightning for the reasons of safety or probable damage to the course.
