1 Number 4 August 2015 FOX TRAX The Bimonthly Newsletter of the Foxfire Property Owners Association Foxfire Days Set for Labor Day Weekend Make your plans now for Foxfire Days 2015, welcoming newcomers to our community. In a return to tradition, this year s festivities are scheduled for Labor Day weekend. In addition to the usual events games in the park, a picnic honoring newcomers, bridge party, children s pizza and games party, and an 18-hole golf tournament this year s event features an arts and crafts theme. This is meant to showcase talents within Foxfire Village and to allow those who may have an interest in a particular hobby to connect with and learn from others who share that interest. Whether it s painting, jewelry-making, quilting, embroidery, pottery-making, knitting, woodworking, model airplanes, trains or cars, stamp or coin collections, antique displays, floral arrangements, golf club making if you have an interest in showing off your talents, contact Gail Ruppert at so we can provide table space for you. The fun starts Saturday morning, September 5, with bocce ball, horseshoe and shuffleboard competitions at the Village Green. Registration for bocce ball is at 8:30 a.m. All games begin at 9 a.m. Two-person teams are needed, but singles are also welcome. Jackpot prizes will be awarded to the winners in each event. Speaking of Daves Dave Rossman will be the DJ this year. If you have a favorite tune or two, forward your request to him at Please note, this year Betty Dresher will sign up bridge players directly, and if you want to play, please contact her at Betty would like all newcomers to know that they are welcome to play. 3 FPOA News Page 3 Foxfire Village Newcomers Chris and Lisa Stephenson Chris and Lisa Stephenson are in the process of moving into their new home at 2 Pine Valley Circle. The Stephensons are relocating here from Sanford. Chris is from Sanford, while Lisa is originally from Florida. They have chosen Foxfire as their home because it is close to their workplaces. Chris owns Carolina Home Service and Repair, and Lisa works for Ferguson Enterprises in Aberdeen. They have two daughters, Katelynn, 20, who lives in Sanford; and Shalynn, 17, who lives with them. In addition, they have a lovable 9- year-old chocolate Lab named Tarheel. They love going to the beach. Both Chris and Lisa are golfers and get out as often as possible. But right now they are focused on getting their house and yard ready as well as moving things down from Sanford little by little. A warm welcome to Chris and Lisa! Don and Nancy Boito FPOA Website Update A Message From FPOA Chairman Dave Rossman By now I hope all of you are enjoying and making use of our community website. With access to the FoxTrax, minutes of the FPOA meetings, photos of our latest events, a copy of the Foxfire White pages, and access to the Foxfire Marketplace, our members are enjoying one of the many benefits of FPOA membership. I have heard feedback from many of you, and am happy to say that the majority of folks are pleased with the website. I have also heard that some of you are still having trouble getting on to the members section. If you are one of those people, please get in touch with me. I have made many visits to folks who were having problems with the site. It is a 5-minute fix, and I m happy to stop by your home at any time to lend a hand. The website is a powerful tool to easily blast information and data to everyone. For example, as noted earlier in this edition of FoxTrax, any and all last-minute information pertaining to the upcoming Foxfire Days will be posted on the site: any changes/cancellations in games, relocation of events due to weather issues, etc. (We re hoping this won t be the case! But if it is we re prepared, and the website will be YOUR source of information.) We have more ideas about what to put up and will do so over the course of the coming months, but the FPOA always welcomes your suggestions. I thank all of you for your patience while we continue to develop the site. Let me hear from you any time about any issues on which you would like to comment. Cheers, Dave Rossman FPOA Chairman Phone: boxguy100@gmail.com

4 Page 4 Golf The Foxfire golf courses have joined a national movement to move forward the tee markers in an effort to speed up play, as well as make the game more enjoyable by shortening the holes. Although there had long been talk of shortening the courses, serious discussion about adding another set of tees came about when Foxfire club pro Jeff Cowell came on the scene in FLGA members Kathy Lishawa, Ginny Siedler, Debby McGovern, Helen Kirk and Gail Ruppert assisted Jeff in providing input. In the spring of 2015, new grey markers appeared on both the Red Fox and Grey Fox courses. It was Jeff s intent to shorten the holes, but still maintain the integrity of the hole. Golfers could play from the experimental markers, but were not able to post any scores for handicap purposes until the courses were rated by the Carolinas Golf Association. Finally, in late June, the courses were rated. FLGA Chair Helen Kirk had appointed an ad hoc committee (Vicki Haidet, Sue Manley and Marilyn Grady) to discuss some of the issues surrounding the new tees vs. the old tees and FLGA policies. The Grey Fox course/grey tees is now rated 66.5/112 for women and measures 4,458 yards (798 yards shorter than the red tee markers). The Red Fox course/grey tees is now rated 66.8/116 for women and measures 4,556 yards (719 yards shorter than the red tee markers). The women are very excited about the shorter course. Quoting longtime FLGA member Flo LaShomb: As far as I am concerned, we now have a course that is lady-friendly. When I get off the course, I do not feel beat up. Thank FLGA Moves Forward FWGA Fall Lineup September FLGA Club Championship October 1 Solheim Cup October Fall Ringers November 11 Year End Meeting/Luncheon you, Jeff, for doing what we have been promised for years! New member Jackie Martin commented, The grey tees have made golf fun again for me. I have a chance to get on in regulation now. And here s how Judy McCollum sums up the grey tees: They are keepers! There are still some concerns about the new tees some of the women believe some of the holes are too short and might be an issue when interclubs are played on longer, more difficult courses. Some women are enjoying the challenges of using more irons to approach the greens, instead of driver followed by fairway wood shots and still not on the green. Not all women have moved to the forward tees there is still the option of playing the red tees if they wish. The first real test came in July when the FLGA hosted a Matchmakers interclub tournament. Debby McGovern, FLGA rep for Matchmakers, decided to have the tournament play from the new forward tees and received rave reviews from the other clubs as well as members of the FLGA. The new tees are not for women only. Men may choose to play the grey tees as well, giving them yet another option beyond the blue, white and yellow markers. The FMGA and the FLGA are planning a combined fun day on Monday, September 21. It will be a two male/two female scramble (teams made up by the league chairs) and will be played from the grey tees. A special thank-you goes to Jeff Cowell, who has worked many hours on this forward tee project. The ladies definitely appreciate it and are enjoying the game a little more and after all, isn t that one of the goals of playing? Anita Clapp

5 Golf Page 5 Golf News and Notes With summer winding down, some fall events to look forward to. Pat Ogren Fun, Fun, Fun In a new wrinkle in the history of Foxfire golf, members of the FMGA and the FLGA will get together for a Fun Day tournament with the purpose of (of course) having fun and getting to know each other a little better. The event is scheduled for September 21, with a scramble format. Teams will be selected by FMGA and FLGA chairpersons Chad DeBonis and Helen Kirk, respectively, and all teams will have both men and women. A luncheon for participants and nonplaying spouses will follow the game. A $5entry fee, along with FMGA and FLGA contributions to the event, will provide for up to $500 in prizes for the best teams, closest to the hole contests and other competitive events. Prizes will be awarded at the luncheon. Who knows besides it being a fun day, the chairpersons are hinting of the possibility of some high-stakes wagering. And if it goes well, there could be another Fun Day, of men against women. (But no mud-wrestling afterward! Just sayin. ) Foxfire to Defend Brown Jug The third annual Brown Jug brawl between the men s golf groups at Brown Golf Management clubs Foxfire and Whispering Pines is scheduled for October 14 and 15. Foxfire won the first two events, and the team is ready to keep the Brown Jug safely at the Foxfire Clubhouse. The first day's matches will be held at Foxfire, and at Whispering Pines on day two. Play will be Head pro Jeff Cowell holds the trophy on a 6,000 yard course at each club (roughly the gold tees at CCWP and a gold/red hybrid at Foxfire s Red Fox course), and there will be a 24-stroke maximum handicap allowed. (Players will be allowed to compete if they have a higher handicap but will only receive 24 strokes.) The entry fee for this year s event is $40 and will include a team shirt, tournament favor, and beer/munchies at Foxfire. There will also be a cookout and beer for players following the round at CCWP on Thursday afternoon. Those interested in being part of this event can sign up now in the Golf Shop. In case more than 20 players sign up, a qualifying net score, stroke play game will be played to determine the 20-man Foxfire team. See head golf professional Jeff Cowell if you have any questions. Sheldon and Spaulding Win FMGA Four-Ball Again! Yep, those two sandbaggers (oops, meant to say those two super-talented golfers) Rob Sheldon and Ed Spaulding have won the 2015 FMGA Four- Ball Tournament once again. This is the third time these two have won this tournament over the past few years. The team of Steve Durham and Joe Cardelle tried valiantly to stop the Sheldon/Spaulding onslaught, but unfortunately, fell short in the finals. To reach the finals, Sheldon and Spaulding defeated the team of Brian Manley and Denis Micallef, while Durham and Cardelle knocked off the team of Jerry Tubbs and Bill Pomplun. East-West Tournament Let s hope for better weather this time! Foxfire s traditional grudge match tournament will be held October 21/22, when the golfers of the West Side take on the golfers from the East Side. It was originally scheduled for June 24-25, but was postponed due to a heat wave that some of us thought would never end. This year s event will be a super grudge match, since last year the East Side won the shootout by only a few points. The tournament is open to all Foxfire residents and club members. Director of golf Jeff Cowell is managing the event, and the club will serve lunch following the second day s play. Guy Peckitt is chairing the event this year. Tom McClellan is captain of the East team, and the West team captain is Bill Kirk.

6 Page 6 Clubs Book Club News and Views One of the things I like best about our Book Club is the mix of books we choose: biographies, mysteries, historical fiction, classics, suspense, bestsellers and so on. As I ve said in other columns, sometimes the selections are ones that I wouldn t have chosen on my own, but have turned out to be some of my favorites. Over the years, there have been a few that have had mixed reviews from the members, and a couple that received a collective thumbs down. June s selection was one of those. We decided to sample the acclaimed author Virginia Woolf ( ), choosing her award winning novel Mrs. Dalloway. It takes place in one day prior to a party to be given by socialite Clarissa Dalloway. Rather than plot, action or dialogue, the author uses what was then a new literary style known as stream of consciousness, in which the reader follows the characters through their thoughts and observations. Virginia Woolf, born in London, was a feminist and modernist who experimented with literary form and expression. World War I had a great impact on the modernist movement. Much of Woolf's writing and characters is based on her own experiences. She was in and out of asylums and eventually committed suicide by drowning. In British author Virginia Woolf was one of the foremost modernists of the 20th century this book, plus others, Woolf makes critical statements about the way mental patients were treated in England during this time. Book Club met in June for a luncheon meeting at Longhorn Steak House, our last meeting for the summer. Although all unanimously agreed the book was not to their liking, the food and conversation were. Some comments included, I didn t like the book at all and would not recommend Virginia Woolf. Another said she was ready to commit suicide by page five! All agreed it was wordy, rambling and tedious. No one finished the 267 pages. Looking for a positive from the experience, we ve sampled Virginia Woolf and the modernist literary style. Time now to move on! In 2005, Mrs. Dalloway was included on Time Magazine s List of 100 Best English Language Novels Written Since We decided that we might not choose a book from that particular list. Book Club will resume in September and will be discussing Dennis Lehane's historical novel, The Given Day. Questions? Please call Judy McCollum, or mccollumj3@gmail.com. Enjoy the rest of the summer!
