1 MUES 60th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION On October 2, 2016, the Marquette Evans Scholars celebrated their 60th anniversary as a chapter of the Evans Scholars Foundation. Alumni classes from as recent as 2016 to as early as 1960 were in attendance. The day kicked off with a mass in the chapel of the Alumni Memorial Union on Marquette s campus, led by Father Tom Anderson, House Chaplain. Thanks to all of the active Scholars who helped with the service! We then went across the street to the Scholarship House to have breakfast, take house tours, catch up with old friends and make new ones. As a special treat, scrapbooks from the classes in the 1960s and 1970s were put on display. A lot of great old photos in those scrapbooks! In the afternoon, we headed to Muskego Lakes Country Club for a shotgun outing. The format was a scramble, and despite a few rain drops here and there, we had decent fall weather. Prizes consisting of various Evans Scholar merchandise were given out for the lowest-scoring team, longest drive, and longest putt. Congrats to the winners! Most importantly, it was a wonderful way to honor Chick s legacy and celebrate 60 years as a house. Thanks to all the Alums who came. Here s to another 60 years of the Zeta Chapter! 2 2016 PAR CLUB CHALLENGE UPDATE There s still time for Marquette to repeat as the champion of the Par Club Challenge! The Par Club Challenge winner will be the university with the highest percentage of Alumni participating in the Par Club this year. Marquette won the inaugural competition in 2015 with 56.4% participation. We re doing well again this year at 54.7%, but we still trail Indiana University by a little more than half a percentage point. Thank you to everyone who made a Par Club gift in For those of you haven t been able to make a gift yet there s still time! All gifts made before January 31, 2017, will be counted toward the 2016 Par Club Challenge. More importantly, your gift will help make the opportunity of the Evans Scholarship available to more of the young men and women caddies who are following in your footsteps. With a record 935 Evans Scholars enrolled at 20 leading universities this year including 66 at Marquette the Evans Scholars Foundation is driving toward a goal of having 1,000 Scholars in school by We can help the Foundation reach that goal by helping it exceed its goal of 52% Alumni participation in the 2016 Par Club campaign. We have the responsibility to ensure that future generations of caddies have the same opportunity we had to earn a degree from one of the best universities in the nation. 3 GOLF TO GIVE BACK On September 24, 2016, a group of Alums from the classes throughout the 1960s and 1970s got together for the 16th anniversary of their very own Marquette University Evans Scholars Open at Johnson Park Golf Course in Racine, Wisconsin. Collecting $1,130, the group was able to make a Par Club contribution at the Eagle Level. That was almost twice the amount the crew raised last year! Joe Kane accepted the Nielsen Trophy (named in honor of deceased MU alumnus, Pete Nielsen) as our champion, shooting a 76. 4 EVENTS BASKETBALL: MARQUETTE VS. DEPAUL, FEBRUARY 4, 2017, AT ALLSTATE ARENA Be on the lookout for specific details via regarding our annual Alumni Basketball Game. Tip-off is at 1 p.m., and there will be an Alumni pre-game at Harry Caray s (10233 W Higgins Rd, Des Plaines, IL 60018). Doors open at 11 a.m. Contact Devlin Gray at devlin.f.gray@gmail.com with questions. ACTIVE SCHOLAR UPDATE Here s what the active Scholars are currently up to at 1318 W. Wells. Seems like a lifetime ago, right? Maggie McPike became the first elected MUES representative in the Marquette University Student Government: Although group living is a benefit to the Scholars, it is sometimes difficult for the rest of campus to understand. We are mistakenly addressed as golfers, or the people who caddie for Marquette s golf team, when really those who receive the Scholarship have a lot more to offer than their caddie skills. Maggie volunteered to run for the senator position due to the encouragement of her peers within the house. Joining MUSG is a way to actively change our image and expand our involvement throughout campus, says Maggie. As the Evans Scholar Senator, Maggie will be a part of the general senate of student government. Their main duty is to make legislation for changes on campus, to hear out the concerns of students, provide funding opportunities for student organizations and ensure every student has a way to get involved on campus. Her involvement in MUSG will hopefully increase Marquette s awareness of the Evans Scholarship and its unique pillar of group living! Marquette brings homecoming back: Marquette Evans Scholars participated in homecoming festivities, including bed racing, a campus color run, and cheering on the artists who played in Westtown Square on the last day of the eventful week! Blessed at the MUES House: Thanksgiving Dinner, which took place mid-november, was a success! The whole house got together to be thankful for all that they ve been given and to reflect on the second family that Chick intended for us. Jessica Ayala, Executive Vice President, used this occasion as an opportunity to bring a variety of restaurants into the house. The house enjoyed amazing food from Boston Market, Wal-Mart, Buca di Beppo s, Baker s Square, and Daddy s Soul Food and Grille. Thankful for a great meal and for the best company. #ThanksChick Bed racing at homecoming

5 Seniors Deck the Halls: The Class of the 2017 decorated the house s front room area to bring the Christmas spirit into the house. Seniors always look forward to this yearly tradition. New Scholars and their big sibs help feed America: The New Scholars and their newly selected Big Sibs went to Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin in early December to sort all donations that the nonprofit received. By sorting all kinds of pastas, canned goods, candy, beverages, condiments, and more, the Scholars were able to organize the huge food pantry so that boxes could be prepared to be distributed to Milwaukee families in need. This was a great opportunity for the pairings to give back to their community while also spending some quality time together! Marquette Evans Scholars live up the first-ever week of Camp Kesem: Camp Kesem at Marquette an organization that was co-founded by MUES senior Jessica Ayala, with other Scholars who served the week as camp counselors (Janni Palijo, Megan Malloy, Jerry Martinez, Nick Larocco) has kicked off to a powerful start! Camp Kesem is a national non-profit organization that allows student leaders to plan and run a full week of camp for a very special group of kids whose parents have been diagnosed with cancer. These Scholars, along with other Marquette students and friends, were able to raise more than $45,000 to serve 28 campers last summer. Scholars continue to support Camp Kesem greatly, inviting more Scholars to join in on the fun. For information on the organization, please visit their website here or Facebook page here.
