6 The Maldon & Baringhup Agricultural Society Show GRAND PARADE makes its triumphant return in Theme for this year is PARTICIPATION. What will make the Grand Parade truly triumphant is the participation of the local community as well as that of the agricultural show animals & equipment. The show is all about showcasing the many and varied talents & interests of local people both agriculturally and culturally. We would also be pleased if any visitors to the area felt like taking part with us. Ways for general Participation: Represent via an over shirt, flag, sash(provided) your favourite farm animal, a prize bull, cow, goat, donkey, sheep, lamb, etc. March for the sheep who missed their seat on the bus, pretend your chook or a duck, prove the saying pigs are smarter than they look. The possibilities are endless. 8 The Agricultural Societies of Victoria RURAL AMBASSADOR AWARD a partnership between VAS & RASV Sponsored by: THE WEEKLY TIMES, ACE RADIO AND RURAL FINANCE Aims Of The Rural Ambassador Award: To highlight the talent, creativity and ingenuity of young rural Victorian residents and in doing so, encourage entrants to be role models across local communities. To encourage and reward enthusiastic, skilful and industrious young people who are actively involved in their communities. To assist all entrants through their participation to develop strong communication and leadership qualities. To enable the applicant to gain greater proficiency in their chosen field and also to develop the applicant s stature and reputation in that chosen field. General Conditions Of Entry: (1) The competition is open to those who are permanent residents of Australia. (2) Entrants must be aged over 20 years and under 30 years as at 1 st May in the year of the State 1.Final. (3) Entry into the Rural Ambassador Award is via the official application form only. The Application Form must be completed and signed by the applicant and accompanied by a covering letter addressing the selection criteria, as outlined in Section 4. (4) The Award is open to both males and females. (5) All entrants must be nominated by a local, VAS Ltd-affiliated Agricultural Show Society. (6) Finalists may be involved in a rural or agricultural-based industry, but do not necessarily need to reside in a rural community. (7) Entrants should be actively involved, or demonstrate a readiness to become actively involved, in their local Show. They should also be knowledgeable about current rural issues pertaining to their local area, the State of Victoria, and Australia, and also have a strong affiliation towards agriculture. (8) Tertiary qualifications are not a prerequisite for the Rural Ambassador Award and will have no influence on the selection process. The Award seeks to attract all young rural people who symbolize the rural spirit people with vitality, who are forward-thinking and with a passion for the land and local country Shows. (9) If successful at Group level, participants are required to attend the Award Information Session in June, the State Final, and all associated judging at the Royal Melbourne Show in September. (10) The State winner is required to represent Victoria in the National Final, and may be required to travel interstate to attend the National Final. In exceptional circumstances, if the State winner is unable to attend the National final, a runner- up may be selected to attend and represent Victoria. (11) The Committee will not enter into any correspondence in relation to selection and the judges decision is final. (12) There will be no joint winners. If a final decision cannot be made, advice is to be sought from the Chairperson of the RAS Youth Affairs Committee. (13) Prizes awarded to Rural Ambassadors are not transferable and must be utilized within twenty-four months of being awarded. This date is taken as being the date of the Award Presentation during the Royal Melbourne Show. All prizes subject to change without notice. (14) All Finalists will be invited to serve on an RAS Committee of their choice for the 12 months following the competition, in a junior role. (15) Previous State first place winners are ineligible to enter. 8

The aims of this competition are to give young people a chance to take part in a competition whilst still residing in their local district, to be part of a local Show and therefore highlighting the importance of Shows. The competition is open to both male and female entrants aged years as at the date of their local Show. Judging criteria is as per the Senior Section above. The winner at Show level will compete in a Group Final. The Group Final winner will then compete in a State Final run by VAS Ltd. and receive $100 towards the cost of attending the state final. Prizes: The winner of the Local Show level will receive a Lapel Badge. Winner of the State Final will receive $700 and trophy the Runner up will receive $300 provided by VAS Ltd. MALE / FEMALE DESCRIPTION OF EVENT: Competitors will be tossing a sheaf of wheat (hessian bag filled to equivalent weight) over a bar, starting at a height of around 15. Get the sheaf over the bar and progress to the next round. Keep going with the bar being raised each round until only one person is left standing. GET YOUR FRIENDS TOGETHER AND SEE WHO s THE BEST! ANNUAL UTE PUSHING COMPETITION Chief Steward: Mr Leo Farrell (Ph: ) Entries Close: Entry on show day Entry Fee: $6.00 per team Competing: Sunday 16 th October 2016 Time: At the conclusion of the Sheaf Toss Presentation: At the conclusion of competition Event one teams compete for the prestigious Gray Family Trophy donated by: THE GRAY FAMILY OF MALDON 1 st and 2 nd place ribbons awarded to all team members. DESCRIPTION OF EVENT: Involves a team of people pushing a ute over a measured distance against the clock. TEAM: A team consists of three (3) people two (2) pushing and one (1) steering the vehicle. There will be two events: Event One: Open to all comers Event Two: Women Only Trophies to be returned to Show Society by end of August in the following year. 16

17 PAVILION SECTION EXHIBITORS PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: SUBMITTING YOUR EXHIBITS: Exhibits in these sections will be received at the PAVILION on Saturday 15 th October 2016 between 11:00am and 1:30pm. At 2pm the Pavilion will be closed for judging, and only Stewards and Judges will be admitted. Judging commences at 2:30pm unless otherwise stated in this schedule. The Horticulture Exhibits will be received until 1:00pm only. Late entries will not be accepted. The Open art entries are to be dropped into the Maldon Community Centre on Wednesday 12th October between 2pm-8pm to allow time for displaying. (Other arrangements can be made by contacting Allex on ) COLLECTING YOUR EXHIBITS: At 4pm on show day the pavilion is to be closed. All patrons are to leave then and only exhibitors are to be re-admitted to collect their exhibits. IMPORTANT NOTE: No names on exhibits please. All garments must not have been worn. AGGREGATE PRIZES: Aggregate prizes, as per the schedule, are provided from donations. In several Sections, more than one trophy is available, e.g., to age groups or other groups of entrants. In each case the aggregate is the sum of 3 points for each 1 st and 2 points for each 2 nd. A minimum of 10 points must be obtained before an Aggregate Prize will be awarded. 18 SECTION E VAS RICH FRUIT CAKE COMPETITION Steward: Mrs Jeanette McKnight (Ph: ) Entries Close: Saturday 8 th October No late entries! Entry Fee: Free Judging: Saturday 15 th October 2016 First prize $30 donated by: MALDON SENIOR CITIZENS 1 st and 2 nd place ribbons awarded. The winner of this section will compete in a Regional Final to be conducted by the Midlands Group of VAS at a place and time to be determined. Group Finalists will then compete at a subsequent Royal Melbourne Show. Trophy for state final winner. RECIPE FOR RICH FRUIT CAKE: INGREDIENTS: 250g (8oz) Sultanas 4 Large Eggs 250g (8oz) Chopped Raisins ¼ Teaspoon Grated Nutmeg 250g (8oz) Currants ½ Teaspoon Ground Ginger 125g (4oz) Chopped Mixed Peel ½ Teaspoon Ground Cloves 90g (3oz) Chopped Red Glace Cherries 250g (8oz) Butter 90g (3oz) Chopped Blanched Almonds 250g (8oz) Soft Brown Sugar 1/3 Cup Sherry or Brandy ½ Teaspoon Lemon Essence - 250g (8oz) Plain Flour OR Finely Grated Lemon Rind 60g (2oz) Self-raising Flour ½ Teaspoon Almond Essence ½ Teaspoon Vanilla Essence METHOD: Mix together all the fruit and nuts and sprinkle with the sherry or brandy. Cover and leave for at least 1 hour, but preferably overnight. Sift together the flours and spices. Cream together the butter and sugar with the essences. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then alternately add the fruit and flour mixtures. Mix thoroughly. The mixture should be stiff enough to support a wooden spoon. Place the mixture into a prepared 20cm (8 ) square tin and bake in a slow oven for approximately 3 ½ to 4 hours. Allow the cake to cool in the tin. NOTE: To ensure uniformity and depending on the size, it is suggested that the raisins be snipped into 2 or 3 pieces, cherries into 4-6 pieces and almonds crosswise into 3-4 pieces. REGULATIONS: 1. The Rich Fruit Cake competition follows the show-group-state level of competition. 2. An exhibitor having won at local show, will bake another cake for entry in the Group Final; the winner will then be required to bake a further cake for the State Final. 3. Exhibitors are to follow the recipe and specification (listed above). 4. An exhibitor having won at local show level is not eligible to enter any other show until after the Group judging, when, if not the winning entry, can compete further. 5. An exhibitor is only eligible to represent one Group in the State Final. 6. Each cake entered must be the bona fide work of the exhibitor. 7. If for any reason a winner is unable to compete at Group or State Final level then the second place getter is eligible to compete. 18

19 SECTION F VAS CARROT CAKE COMPETITION Steward: Mrs Jeanette McKnight (Ph: ) Entries Close: Saturday 8 th October No late entries! Entry Fee: Free Judging: Saturday 15 th October st and 2 nd place ribbons awarded. The winner of this section will compete in a Regional Final to be conducted by the Midlands Group of VAS at a place and time to be determined. Group Finalists will then compete at a subsequent Royal Melbourne Show. CARROT CAKE Competitors are to use their own recipe, it is to have no less than 350grams of carrots, be uniced and baked in a 20cm round tin. Recipe must be attached to cake upon entering. RULES & REGULATIONS: 1. The Carrot Cake competition follows the show-group-state level of competition. 2. An exhibitor having won at local show, will bake another cake for entry in the Group Final; the winner will then be required to bake a further cake for the State Final. 3. RECIPE FOR BOILED FRUIT CAKE: INGREDIENTS: 375g (12oz) Mixed Fruit ½ cup Sherry ¾ cup Brown Sugar 2 Eggs, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon Mixed Spice 2 tablespoons Marmalade ½ cup Water 1 cup Self-Raising Flour 125g (4oz) Butter 1 cup Plain Flour ½ teaspoon Bicarbonate Soda ¼ teaspoon Salt METHOD: Place the mixed fruit, sugar, spice, water and butter in a large saucepan and bring to the boil. Simmer gently for 3 minutes, then remove from stove, add bicarb soda and allow to cool. Add the sherry, eggs and marmalade, mixing well. Fold in the sifted dry ingredients then place in a greased and lined 20cm round cake tin. Bake in a moderately slow oven for 1 ½ hours or until cooked when tested. REGULATIONS: 1. RECIPE FOR CARROT & DATE MUFFINS: INGREDIENTS: 2 ½ cups self-raising flour 1 tablespoon orange marmalade 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Cup canola oil ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 eggs, lightly beaten Cup brown sugar (firmly packed) ¾ cup orange juice 1/3 cup pitted dates Cup reduced fat milk 1 cup coarsely grated carrot METHOD: Heat oven to 190 C (moderately hot). Line and spray a 12 hole muffin pan with large paper cases. Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl; stir in dates, carrots. Then add the combined marmalade, oil, eggs, juice and milk. Mix until just combined. Spoon mixture evenly into prepared pan holes. Cook for 20 minutes, (to test muffins are cooked inserted cake skewer. If it comes out clean the muffins are ready. Stand muffins in pan for 5 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool. Show entries 4 muffins per plate per entry. Do not dust with icing sugar. Serves 12 (If you only eat one each). 46 GENERAL REGULATIONS: 1. All entries to be on Official Entry Form and pre-entries in the hands of the Secretary by 5 p.m. 8th October unless otherwise specified. Horse entries will be accepted on the day NO TELEPHONE ENTRIES. Entry fee(s) to accompany entry. 2. Cheques, Money Orders, Postal Notes are to be made payable to Maldon & Baringhup Agricultural Society Inc. PLEASE DO NOT FORWARD CASH. Entries will only be returned if a stamped selfaddressed envelope is enclosed with entries. 3. The committee of the Society reserves the right to refuse or cancel any entry and need not give any reason for doing so. Correspondence will not be entered into. 4. Exhibits, displays and all goods and properties are admitted to the showgrounds conditionally upon the owners absolving the Society from and indemnifying the Society against any claim arising out of any accident to or caused by resulting from miss delivery, accident, fire, storm-way, flood, lightning, theft or any other event. 5. All exhibits must be owned by the entrant as disclosed on the relevant entry form. The Secretary may call for evidence to that effect. 6. All exhibits be of the breed, pedigree, description, qualities and properties appropriate to the event entered. Any contravention tending to mislead the Judges of the event or the Committee of the Society will result in the disqualification of the entry and forfeiture of and prizes awarded to it. 7. Any exhibit affected with a vermin parasite, contagious or other disease shall be refused Admission to or caused to be removed from the Show. 8. Exhibitors must comply with all instructions of the Stewards of the relevant Section. 9. No Judge shall be an exhibitor in the section(s) where he/she is judging 10. The Judge of a Section is not bound to award any or all of the prizes provided for in a class. Any or all of the prizes may be withheld when the Judge considers appropriate standards are not met. 11. The Judge of a Section may amalgamate or divide classes or transfer entries into more appropriate classes if warranted. 12. Any person insulting, impeding or otherwise interfering with any Judge during the course of the Show may be removed from the Showgrounds and any prizes awarded to such person may be forfeited. 13. Judges shall sign and pass their reports to the Secretary promptly after finalizing their decisions. Protests against Judge s decisions may be lodged within one hour (unless otherwise stated in Section) of the decision being notified, together with a Protest Fee of $ The Protest Fee will be forfeited should the Committee consider the protest to be vexatious and frivolous. 14. Prize Cards, Ribbons and other Awards bestowed at the current Show must be displayed with the relevant exhibit from the time of the award to the close of the Show. 15. No exhibit will be removed from the Showgrounds before the closure of the Show except with permission of the Steward of the Section. 16. Contravention of any regulation may lead to the forfeiture of any prizes won. 17. Any dispute to the construction of these regulations will be determined by the Committee of the Society whose decision will be final. 18. All dogs owned by either Showman Guild members, competitors or the general public must be chained or confined by the owner s leash. Chain/leash not to exceed one metre in length. Dogs to be muzzled whilst not in competition. 19. Prizes and Trophies can be collected from the Chief Steward of the Section concerned on presentation or prize cards. 20. At 4 pm on Show Day, the Pavilion is to be closed. All patrons are to leave then, and only exhibitors are to be re-admitted. 46
