All handling and veterinary treatment must ensure the health and welfare of the horse. 4. The highest standards of nutrition, health, sanitation and safety shall be encouraged and maintained at all times. 5. In the interests of the horse, the fitness and competence of the rider shall be regarded as essential. 8. All riding and training methods must take account of the horse as a living entity and must not include any technique considered by the FEI to be abusive. 9. Competition Rules and Regulations shall be continually reviewed to ensure such welfare. The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) expects all those involved in international equestrian sport to adhere to the FEI s Code of Conduct and to acknowledge and accept that at all times the welfare of the horse must be paramount and must never be subordinated to competitive or commercial influences. 1. At all stages during the preparation and training of competition horses, welfare must take precedence over all other demands. Every effort must be made to ensure that horses receive proper attention after they have competed and that they are treated humanely when their competition careers are over. This covers proper veterinary care, competition injuries, euthanasia and retirement. 5. The FEI urges all involved with the sport to attain the highest levels of education in their areas of expertise. That this is working can be seen in the number of successful horses that have had their start in the Young Horse ranks, and have progressively worked through the ranks of Futurities, Grand Prix, World Cups and international competition. The format of the Oaks Medallion is different this year, reflecting the emphasis on clear rounds for 4 and 5 year olds, and competitiveness for 6 and 7 year olds as they prepare for open competition. Still of interest and importance is the focus on breeding, so the draw is accompanied by pedigree details for spectators, owners and breeders. Results from the jumping competition will be counted towards the Oaks Sporthorse Young Horse Series results. Format for Judges Choice Two judges will watch each class. They will assess and judge the young horses in each class in relation to their appropriate stage of development.
