1 WHAT S HAPPENING WEEK #7 AT SARATOGA RACE COURSE WHAT: Week #7 at Saratoga Race Course WHEN: Wednesday, September 2 Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2015 WHERE: Saratoga Race Course and various locations in Saratoga Springs WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 With Anticipation: The day s feature race is the Grade 2, $200,000 With Anticipation for 2-year-olds on the turf. Military Appreciation Day: The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will pay tribute to the nation s service members and veterans during Military Appreciation Day at Saratoga Race Course. The day will feature free grandstand admission for all United States military service members and veterans with valid military ID or proof of military service. Additionally, NYRA will welcome local service members and veterans to present the trophy for each race throughout the afternoon. NYRA will pay tribute to its service member and veteran employees with a special ceremony in the winner s circle during the National Anthem, which will be performed by Master Sergeant Mary Kay Messenger of the West Point United States Military Academy at 11:30 a.m. The National Anthem will be accompanied by a Presentation of Colors from members of the NSA Saratoga. Veterans of World War II and the Korean War will be recognized in the winner s circle following the day s second race, named in honor of Military Appreciation Day. The ceremony will commemorate the 70 th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day, which marked the end of World War II. Artwork created by veterans participating in the fine arts program of the Veterans Services Project at Living Resources will be on display at the Saratoga Pavilion. The program provides local military veterans who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and/or traumatic brain injuries with an outlet to express their emotions as they transition to civilian life. A number of activities will be available for guests and various military organizations will offer interactive displays at the Saratoga Pavilion throughout the afternoon. NYRA Community Outreach Booth: In conjunction with Military Appreciation Day, the NYRA Community Outreach Booth will host the Toys for Tots Foundation, a national movement organized by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to collect new, unwrapped toys to distribute as holiday gifts for less fortunate children. The Capital Region Toys for Tots campaign works with more than 200 community agencies to distribute toys and serves more than 200,000 area children. At the Community Outreach Booth, United States Marines volunteering with the Capital Region Toys for Tots program will give its toy collection a head start by accepting monetary donations and new, unwrapped toys. In return for a $5 donation, guests will receive a Saratoga giveaway item, while supplies last. Donations will also be accepted at the May I Help You? booths throughout the day.
2 Saratoga Fan Appreciation Days: NYRA will thank its fans with a series of special events, activities and offers during closing week of the 2015 season at Saratoga Race Course. Through Labor Day, Monday, September 7, fans will have the opportunity to renew or purchase a season admission pass for the 2016 meet at current pricing levels: $35 for Grandstand and $55 for Clubhouse. The offer is available in-person only at the NYRA Box Office at Gate A at Saratoga Race Course. A season pass is valid for each day of the racing season and guarantees admission to the Travers. Guests will have the opportunity to win a series of unique Spa experiences, including watching a race from the press box roof, the winner s circle, the announcer s booth, and a visit to the paddock, amongst other items. Fans can also win gift cards to the NYRA Store and to select area restaurants. Fans are invited to visit the Saratoga Pavilion between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. throughout the week to enter to win. members will receive a number of additional exclusive offers throughout the week, including: 25 percent discount on merchandise at NYRA stores through Labor Day, Monday, September 7 (tobacco and lottery sales excluded); 15 percent discount at select concession stands, including Fourstardave, Toga Burgers, Paddock Pizza, Finishline Sabrett, Sams and Clams and Panini from through Labor Day, Monday, September 7; Free Saratoga walking tours through Labor Day, Monday, September 7. BBQ At the Rail Tent: Beginning on Wednesday, September 2 through Monday, September 7, NYRA will host an end of summer BBQ in the At the Rail Tent. The buffet lunch includes a selection of barbecue favorites, Clubhouse admission and a Post Parade program. The cost of the end of season BBQ is $38 for adults and $28 for kids ages 12 and under (including tax and gratuity). Reservations can be made by calling the NYRA Box Office at 844-NYRA-TIX. Season pass holders, season ticket holders and NYRA Wagering Account members will receive a 20% discount off the price of the BBQ beginning Friday, September 4 through Labor Day, Monday, September 7. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 Taste NY: Cider, Wine & Spirits: Taste NY: Cider, Wine & Spirits offers track patrons the opportunity to sample varietals of cider, wine and spirits from numerous New York State distilleries and wineries. The tasting will be held each Thursday of the meet from noon to 5 p.m. in the Saratoga Pavilion. Participating distilleries and wineries include: 1911 Cider and Spirits Company; Harvest Spirits; Hazlitt s Cider Tree; Heron Hill Winery; Saratoga Courage Distillery (Saratoga Pick Six Vodka); and Saratoga Winery. Sampling fee applies.
3 Saratoga Fan Appreciation Days: Fan Appreciation Days will continue when all members receive a 10 percent discount at Shake Shack. The discount is available to season pass holders who present their season pass and to season ticket holders who show their new season ticket holder perks card at participating on-track locations. NYRA Community Outreach Booth, featuring the Travers Trophy: Fans will have an opportunity to have their photo taken with the Travers trophy from 1 to 3 p.m. for a $5 donation to benefit Siena College Athletics. Named for the eponymous legendary thoroughbred and donated by Mrs. Samuel D. Riddle, the Man O War Cup was designed by Tiffany & Co. and is inscribed with the names of the winners of the 145 previous editions of the Travers. The winner of Saturday s 146 th edition of the Travers, Keen Ice, will join the select company of thoroughbreds whose names are engraved on the Cup. Siena College is an independent Roman Catholic liberal arts college in Loudonville, New York. At the Post Live: Serling on Saratoga : New York Racing Association broadcast analyst and nationally recognized thoroughbred racing personality Andy Serling will host the final in a series of weekly live broadcasts on ESPN Radio The Team at The Parting Glass in downtown Saratoga Springs from 8 to 9 p.m. Serling will offer weekly tips, discuss behind the scenes information about Saratoga Race Course and interact with special guests including Hall of Fame trainers and jockeys, leading racing personalities, notable industry figures and celebrity horse racing fans. The weekly broadcasts are free and open to the public. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 Taste NY: Craft Beer: Taste NY: Craft Beer offers track patrons the opportunity to sample numerous craft beers produced exclusively by New York State breweries. The day s featured breweries are Ithaca Beer Co. and Keegan Ales. The tasting will be held each Friday from noon to 5 p.m. in the Saratoga Pavilion. Sampling fee applies. NYRA Community Outreach Booth: The Community Outreach Booth will host the 5K Run for the Horses, an annual fundraiser hosted by the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation to create awareness about racehorse welfare organizations that provide rescue, rehab and retirement services to horses. This year, TRF has expanded the fundraiser to benefit all local aftercare organizations in the area, including Old Friends at Cabin Creek, ACTT Naturally, Heading for Home and ReRun, Inc. The sixth annual 5K Run for the Horses will take place on Saturday, September 5 at the Orenda Pavilion in the Saratoga State Park in Saratoga Springs. Woodward Day: Special First Post time -- 12:30 p.m. Labor Day weekend will feature a special first post time of 12:30 p.m. The Spa will celebrate the final Saturday of the 2015 meet with a pair of Grade 1 races and Grade 3 affairs. The historic Grade 1, $600,000 Woodward for older horses at nine furlongs and Grade 1, $350,000 Spinaway for juvenile fillies will be accompanied on the card by the Grade 3, $300,000 Saranac for 3-year-olds on grass and the Grade 3, $200,000 Glens Falls for fillies and mares on the turf. In Memory of John Nerud: The New York Racing Association (NYRA) will name the day s fourth race in honor of trainer and owner John Nerud, who passed away in August at the age of 102. Nerud was an influential figure in the thoroughbred racing industry who for more than four decades trained a multitude of legendary stakes winners on the NYRA circuit, including the inimitable Dr. Fager who is the only horse to win four championships in one year (1968). Nerud was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in Fashion Saturdays: Designed to highlight the tradition of style and glamour in thoroughbred racing, the weekly event will feature various local fashion retailers and spas throughout the season. Prizes for the best dressed man and woman will be awarded each Saturday afternoon, including participation in a trophy presentation for the Fashion Saturday race, presented by Saratoga Living. Participating shops include Bow River Jewelry, Lifestyles of Saratoga, The National, Rumors Salon & Spa and Serendipity Boutique. Final Stretch Music Festival: After the conclusion of the day s races, fans can make their way downtown for the first night of the two-day Final Stretch Music Festival. Numerous bands will provide free musical entertainment at familiar downtown locations on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. Music will fill the streets of downtown Saratoga from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The festival is presented by the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce and The New York Racing Association, Inc. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6: POST TIME 12:30 P.M. Prioress: Special First Post time -- 12:30 p.m. The day s feature race is the Grade 2, $300,000 Prioress for 3-year-old fillies. Saratoga Long Sleeve T-Shirt Giveaway: Fans will enjoy the final giveaway of the 2015 meet - a commemorative Saratoga long sleeve t-shirt, free with paid admission, while supplies last. Ed Lewi A Wonderful Life: The New York Racing Association (NYRA) will name the day s seventh race in honor of public relations industry leader Ed Lewi, who
5 passed away at the age of 81 on Travers Day, Saturday, August 29. Over a communications career that spanned more than six decades, Lewi and his agency helped contribute to today s success and popularity of such major local, regional and national attractions as the Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Performing Arts Center and The Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom, amongst others. Lewi also maintained a long history of philanthropy, volunteerism and community involvement to numerous charitable causes, including the Double H Ranch, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Camp Chingachgook and the Capital District YMCA, where he served on each of their board of directors. Taste NY: Food and Artisans: Returning for the 2015 summer meet, Taste NY: Food & Artisans is a lively on-track market of nearly 20 food and artisan vendors featuring products made exclusively in New York State. Products include jams, honey, baked goods and hand-crafted soap, amongst other items. The market will be held each Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Saratoga Pavilion. Low Rollers Handicapping Contest: Sunday will feature the return of the Low Rollers Handicapping Contest, which allows aspiring handicappers the opportunity to experience the thrill of tournament play for $40, with $30 going towards live money and $10 to the prize pool. Participants must select five races on which to place live $2 win, place and show wagers on five different horses in five different races. Only Saratoga horses are accepted for contest play. Guests are invited to register on the first floor of the grandstand by the lower Carousel before post time for the day s fifth race. The tournament will be held each Sunday of the meet. Final Stretch Music Festival: After the conclusion of the day s races, fans can make their way downtown for the second night of the two-day Final Stretch Music Festival. Numerous bands will provide free musical entertainment at familiar downtown locations on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. Music will fill the streets of downtown Saratoga from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The festival is presented by the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce and The New York Racing Association, Inc. LABOR DAY, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7: POST TIME 12:30 P.M. The Hopeful: Special First Post time -- 12:30 p.m. The traditional final feature race, the 111 th running of the Grade 1, $350,000 Hopeful for 2-year-olds, will afford racing fans a preview of potential standouts in next year s Triple Crown series and Travers. The Spa will also feature the running of the Grade 2, $250,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap for older horses on the turf. Berkshire Bank Family Mondays: Monday will be highlighted by the newly expanded and enhanced Berkshire Bank Family Mondays, presented by Mister Softee from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Saratoga Pavilion. The weekly family festival will enable families and children to experience and enjoy a wide array of games, attractions, and educational activities against the backdrop of historic Saratoga Race Course, including the opportunity to pet a retired thoroughbred.
