3 Hi Everyone, What kind of qualities do you have as a person?.. Are you thoughtful, patient, kind, caring. Ask yourself Am I a good friend?. Everybody needs friends, you can feel very sad and lonely if you don't have someone to play with, talk to and be with. Being a good friend and having friends makes us all feel happy and important. It is really important to be a good friend and support people around you. Each and everyone of us deal with situations differently. What is upsetting to one person may not be upsetting for you so we need to be really thoughtful to how others are feeling. How to be a good friend? 1) Listen always listen to people and value what they are saying 2) Praise when someone does something well tell them 3) Manners remember to say please and thank you and be kind and polite 4) Supportive be supportive to your friends, we all deal with thinks differently 5) Caring show people that you care about them, this might just be saying Hello 6) Helpful do nice things for people like opening a doors for them 7) Think think before you speak so you don t upset peoples feelings 8) Understanding try to be understanding, put yourself in their shoes, how might it feel for them By being a good friend not only are we making others feel happy, valued and important but we should be proud of the kind, caring person we are. It is at the Whitnash Sports and Social Club in Royal Leamington Spa. I really enjoy it, it relaxes your mind and it is very good for your concentration skills. I have made some friends down there and it helps with my social skills. Already I feel that I am part of a team and also I am a member there now. I always look forward to going down there every Monday evening. The club do lots of competitions and tournaments as well. They play with lots of people around the world. The club consists of 77 members and the age ranging is 12 years 83 years. In 2012 the club has celebrated the 50 th anniversary. Bowls Historians believe that the game developed from the Egyptians. People used to play skittles with round stones. The sport became very popular and the sport spread across the world and took on a variety of forms like, Bocce (Italian), Bolle (Danish) and Ula Maika (Polynesian). The oldest bowls green still played on is in Southampton in England. The English bowling was founded in 1903 and it is a very well organised sport that do lots of competitions from the club to the national level. The website tells you what s on, what sports sections there are and social sections as well. It also gives you dates when things are going on. 7 My After School Activity - JUDO 柔道 by Connor Herlihy in the Bureau Judo Club is run on Fridays after School by visiting coach, Dave Nicols. Dave has been delivering Judo for our students for over 10 years and any new members are very welcome. Previous experience is not necessary. Timings are 3.15pm 4.30pm, Its 5 a week, your first week is free. History of Judo Judo is a martial art that was born in Japan, and it is now known around the world as an Olympic sport. Judo was established in 1882 by combining jujitsu, a form of wrestling, with mental discipline.in Japanese, Judo translates as the gentle way which means you can t punch or kick your opponent, you can use your opponent s force against them by doing a leg trip or a hip toss. Judo originated with a man called Jigoro Kano. The benefits of judo There are a lot of benefits of judo, these are self-discipline, respect, confidence and inner peace. When I attend judo on Fridays after school, what I get from it is a sense of freedom to express myself through the movements and being able to have the ability of self-control. It also makes me relax. What you do in judo Because judo means the gentle way in Japanese, we basically do throwing techniques and ground techniques which means we learn how to fight on your back. The belt grade I am on At the moment I am an orange belt in my judo club which is the highest belt held by a student. How long it takes to become a black belt It takes about five to six years to get from white belt to black belt. Page 7 of 15
8 What are the techniques in judo? Nage-waza ( 投げ技 ): throwing techniques Te-waza ( 手技 ): hand throwing techniques Koshi-waza ( 腰技 ): hip throwing techniques Ashi-waza ( 足技 ): foot throwing techniques Katame-waza ( 固技 ): grappling techniques Osaekomi-waza ( 抑込技 ): pins or methods Shime-waza ( 絞技 ): chokes or strangles Page 8 of 15
9 Hello Everyone! Welcome to another school year where you will all be wowed by our fantastic school choir. For those of you new to school this is made possible by funding from Music of Life a charity which helps spread music to all special needs children. We too as a school have to contribute towards the cost. We were lucky enough last year to have National Grid fundraise for this cause and so we will be able to continue for the rest of this year. The actual workshops are run by the very talented Suzie Purkis and a pianist James of the highest calibre. This year the choir is made up of 50 pupils from all key stages. We rehearse every Friday from 9.30 til It is amazing to see our pupils gain confidence as they sing with their friends. Music of Life and Round Oak also offer 1:1 vocal coaching led by the talented Cerys Eleri. Suzie and I suss out those pupils who would gain the most from these lessons. At present we have 8 students taking 1:1 singing lessons. We hope to see you soon at one of our performances this Christmas. Watch this space!! Any information about the choir please do not hesitate to contact me at school. Best wishes Gerarda Page 9 of 15
10 Last Friday, a group of Year 11 and 6 th Form students went to the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham (NEC) to visit The National Skills Show. We went to the NEC to see what careers are available to us for the future; they were divided into five sections: Creative & Design, Health & Hospitality, Construction & Logistics, Digital & Business and Engineering & Technology. There were over 130 employers offering jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities. There were lots of different stalls like e.g. The Royal Army, Jaguar Land Rover & Royal Air Force. There was the Royal Mail, it s a postal service that delivers mail around the UK. It showed how to sort post to different places and transport the deliveries. They had a beauty therapy department, where they demonstrated many types of beauty treatments including hair and nails. They had painting and decorating exhibition, which also included a demonstration of how to plaster. Some of the stalls interacted with people to have a go at trying/learning different skills and see if it is the right career for them. There weren t many places to eat our lunch, so we had to eat at different places separately. It was also very crowded with other colleges and schools from all over the country.
