6 Swim with mike is an annu ual swim-a-thon held to raise money for the Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund. Established in S1 1981, the Swim was scheduled d to be a one-time event organized by friends and teammates on behalf of Mike Nyeholt, a three-time All-American swimmer at USC, who was paralyzed from the chest down following a motorcycle accident suffered in January of Wh hen the first Swim netted more money than was necessary to purchase a specially equipped van for Mike, he suggested that the excess funds be used to create the Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund at the University of Southern California, the only one of its kind in the country. Nyeholt, who has since swum in every subsequent Swim with Mike, co-chairs the organizing committee with his former teammate Ron Orr. Swim with Mike has raised more than $17 million in 35 years and provided over 178 scholarships to Physically Challenged Athletes at 91 universities from Washington, DC to Honolulu, Hawaii.
