Scott McDonald Office Cell macdona2@oakland.edu HEAD COACH GREG KAMPE: After 29 seasons at the helm, Greg Kampe has led the Golden Grizzlies to five consecutive postseason appearances and three NCAA tournaments (2005, 10, '11). Kampe became the fifth Division I active coach to win 500 games at one school and is No. 21 among active D-I coaches for victories. He has led OU to six Summit League titles in 14 seasons of competition and ranks third all-time in league victories with 147. In January 2012, Kampe became part of the 25th Hall of Honor Class as he was inducted into the Hollie L. Lepley Hall of Honor. He was selected as one of the top 20 Mid-Major coaches in the country by Athlon Sports in the summer After leading the basketball program to the top of Division II in the 90s, OU has become an elite program amongst Division I Mid-Majors, finishing inside the Mid- Major Top 10 in two of the last four seasons. Gonzaga vs. Oakland THE SERIES... First Meeting ZIG ZAGS Sunday s Gonzaga- Oakland contest is an Opening Game of the 2013 EA Sports Maui Invitational. Each of the seven mainland teams competing in the 30 th annual Maui Invitational are hosting games. Gonzaga leaves Saturday for Maui and will play Dayton in the Nov. 25 nightcap of the first day of action. Oakland University is relatively new, founded in The school is only 7-years older than Gonzaga head coach Mark Few, while Oakland head coach Greg Kampe was 2- years-old when his current employer was founded. Gonzaga is averaging 96.5 ppg and allowing 68.5 ppg for a scoring margin of Sunday s game will be the fourth of the year for Oakland and their third against a ranked opponent as Gonzaga is ranked 15 th in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls. Oakland opened the season against No. 12/11 North Carolina followed by a game against No. 24/24 UCLA. Oakland lost at unranked California Friday. Washington State visits Thursday at 6 p.m. as Gonzaga concludes its four-game homestand to open the season. Gonzaga will play three games in the EA Sports Maui Invitational Nov , then return home to face Coppin State Dec. 1 and New Mexico State Dec. 7. Gonzaga s first true road game of the season is Dec. 10 at West Virginia. Two Gonzaga players are using the Junior tag in their moniker. ''Life is pretty good when you make your shots,'' Few said. ''That makes everybody look good.'' Gonzaga shot 58 percent and made 14 3-pointers in beating the Rams last Monday. Gary Bell Jr. scored all of his 24 points on 3-pointers to lead Gonzaga. His eight 3-pointers were one short of the school record. Bell, a junior, made a 3-pointer for the first basket of the game, and hit a second a few minutes later. Fellow guards Gerard Coleman added 16 points, while Kevin Pangos had 13 and David Stockton 10 for Gonzaga. KARNOWSKI BOARDS: Przemek Karnowski grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds against Colorado State last Monday, breaking his previous high of 9 against Pepperdine his freshman season. HOME, SWEET HOME: There s no place like home, and the McCarthey Athletic Center has become a pretty special place for Gonzaga. The Bulldogs played their 100 th game in the facility Dec. 15, 2011, in downing Oral Roberts University. Gonzaga is in the building that opened for the season. The Zags are 59-6 in non-conference games, 63-2 in West Coast Conference play and 2-0 in WCC Tournament play. THE ZAGS FOR THREE: Gonzaga has extended its string of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 663. The last time the Bulldogs didn t connect from three was Jan. 27, 1993, when they went 0-for-5 at the University of Portland. UNLV holds the all-time record with 875 entering the season, dating from Nov. 26, TRIO APPROACHING 1,000-POINT CLUB: With 35 players already in Gonzaga s 1,000-point club, three members of this year s team look to join the elite group. Junior guard Kevin Pangos seems to be on pace to become the 36 th member as he enters Sunday s game with 891 career points. Sam Dower Jr. has 811 points and Gary Bell Jr. has 686. EDWARDS STILL OUT: Ryan Edwards, the 7-1, 290-pound freshman center from Kalispell, Mont., is sidelined indefinitely after having his tonsils removed last week. COUSY AWARD: Junior guard Kevin Pangos has been named to the Bob Cousy Point Guard Award Watch List for the second straight season. SHEEPSKIN IN HAND: Three Gonzaga players have already graduated and are in graduate school. Sam Dower, Jr., Drew Barham and David Stockton are enrolled in the Master s in Organizational Leadership program. Dower and Stockton earned their undergraduate degrees last May, while Barham earned his undergraduate degree in three years prior to transferring at Gonzaga last season. THANKSGIVING IN THE ISLANDS: Gonzaga will be competing in its fourth EA Sports Maui Invitational when the Bulldogs head for Lahaina next Saturday. The Zags have played in the 2002, 2005 and 2009 Maui Invitational s. The Zags finished second in 2005 and captured the title in 2009 as Matt Bouldin and Steven Gray shared MVP honors.
