UP AHEAD: Miami looks to get back to its winning ways when it makes the long trip to Buffalo for a Saturday 2 p.m. matinee. 2. LONG BUS TRIPS: Miami will have to fight through fatigue as this week is the only time all season it has two conference road games. It isn t an easy trip for the RedHawks either as Buffalo is the farthest MAC school from Miami at 450 miles. Northern Illinois is the next farthest at 342 miles. After arriving home from Bowling Green at 1 a.m. Thursday morning, the RedHawks went back on the road at 5 p.m. Thursday evening to make the long trek to New York. To help fight the fatigue such a long week of traveling can create, Miami stopped in the Cleveland area Thursday night and finished traveling on Friday morning. 3. HOME AWAY SPLITS: The RedHawks have now played six home games and eight road games (to go along with two neutral site games). That gives Miami a large enough sample to be able to compare the players performances both home and away from Millett Hall. The team scores slightly more on the road (4-4 record), averaging 70.4 points per game, compared to 69.3 at home (4-2 record). However, the RedHawks give up 71.2 points per game on the road compared to only 67.0 at home. Jenna Schone is the team s leading scorer both home and away, averaging 16.3 points per game at home and 14.4 on the road. It doesn t matter to junior guard Courtney Reed where Miami is playing. She has averaged 13.5 points per game both home and away.

An inability to keep the Falcons off the free throw line did in Miami as Bowling Green went 33-for-36 from the free throw line. An early technical on Bowling Green coach Curt Miller gave Miami a 10-6 lead after Jenna Schone hit both free throws. The RedHawks offense was working early, building the lead up to with 9:20 remaining in the half thanks to six points from Ashley Hawkins. After the Falcons pulled to within one, a bucket by Schone, followed by a steal and layup from Courtney Reed built the lead back up to five at at the 7:49 mark. With the RedHawks up 27-23, Bowling Green went on a 10-0 run to take a lead at the 4:31 mark. Miami got as close as off a Hawkins steal and layup, but Lauren Prochaska hit 5-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to key an 8-3 Falcon run that put Bowling Green ahead at halftime. Hawkins had 12 points at the half as Miami shot 43.6 percent (17-for-39), compared to 51.9 percent for the Falcons (14-for-27). Jaclyn Leininger scored a three-point play to keep Miami in the game, but the Falcons hit their free throws down the stretch to come away the victory. Reed led Miami with 19 points, while Schone finished with 15, Hawkins 14 and Leininger 13. Prochaska led Bowling Green with 19 points. ABOUT BUFFALO: After a solid start to the season, Buffalo has struggled recently, dropping its last nine games to fall to 4-12 overall and 0-3 in the MAC. In their last game, the Bulls fell at home to Kent State Buffalo is led by sophomore forward Kourtney Brown, a one-time high school teammate of current Miami RedHawk freshman Erin Wisner. Brown averages 14.4 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game. Miami won 12 of its final 13 games, captured the MAC Tournament championship and earned the automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Since returning to her alma mater as head coach prior to the season, Fantanarosa has guided a resurgent program to eight winning seasons in the past 10 years, including two Mid-American Conference East Division crowns, the MAC regular-season championship and the 2008 MAC Tournament championship. Fantanarosa became Miami s all-time winningest coach in program history with her 132nd win, an victory over IUPUI on Dec. 30, 2006, passing Pam Wettig, who previously held the mark with a career record of Fantanarosa s all-time record at Miami now stands at Fantanarosa s RedHawks have been consistently recognized for their outstanding achievements and contributions on and off the court. 4 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L SWISH, SWISH, SWISH: Miami is among the national leaders in three-point percentage, ranking 33rd (as of Jan. 12) by connecting on 36 percent of its treys. The RedHawks connected on 54.9 percent of their shots against Texas-Pan American (Dec. 5), by far its best effort of the season. Miami s next best single-game effort was 45.9 percent against La Salle (Nov. 26). Twice the RedHawks have hit eight three-pointers in game, against Dayton (Dec. 10) and against Kent State (Jan. 10). SCHONE RUNS THE SHOW: One of the major keys to success for the RedHawks so far has been the performance of senior point guard Jenna Schone (Pickerington, Ohio). A second-team All-MAC selection a year ago and preseason pick in October, she is the team s leading scorer at 15.3 points per game. She has led the team in scoring seven times this season, including six of the last 10 games. Schone has been on a torrid assist pace, averaging 4.4 assists per game, which ranks 86th in the country (as of Jan. 12). She leads the team with 71 assists. Last season, Schone set Miami s single-season assist record with 175, as well as the singleseason three-point field goal record with 84. She currently has 496 career assists, which is second all-time at Miami and 100 shy of Heather Cusick s record of 596. She also has 212 career three-point baskets, which is second on the RedHawk career list, and 18 three-point field goals short of Cusick s career record of 230. WELCOME BACK LEININGER: Senior forward Jaclyn Leininger (Winona Lake, Ind.) has shown no signs of the season-ending knee injury she suffered in a preseason scrimmage last year. She ranks fourth on the team in scoring this year at 9.0 points per game, topping double figures in five games. She also is the team s top rebounder at 6.3 per contest, grabbing at least seven on eight occasions (three in double figures). She had a season high 12 rebounds against Towson (Dec. 29). Leininger recently moved into the top 50 Miami career scoring list, currently ranking 46th with 655 points. HAWK FACTOR: Ashley Hawkins (Henderson, Ky.) seems to have found her groove as the team s sixth man and first guard off the bench. She has spent time as both the shooting guard, as well as the backup point guard in the rare times Schone is off the floor. Hawkins has been a great distributor this season with 57 assists, an average of 3.8 per game. She has at least three assists in all but three games that she has appeared in this season. She also does not turn the ball over, ranking 48th in the nation in assist to turnover ratio at 1.73 (as of Jan. 12). That ratio is also the best on the team this year. Her top performance of the season came against Bowling Green (Jan. 14) when she came off the bench and scored 14 points to go along with five assists. Hawkins has appeared in 106 career games, starting 43. She currently has 727 career points, which ranks 37th on the all-time Miami career scoring list. With 235 career assists, she has cracked the Miami career top 25 list, ranking 20th. REED IS THIS YEAR S BREAKOUT PLAYER: Every season, one player typically makes a huge jump in her contribution from the previous year. This year it is junior guard Courtney Reed (Andrews, Ind.). She has started all 16 games and is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.9 points. Compare that to her first two years, when she appeared in a combined 64 games, starting only 11 (all in ), and averaged 5.8 points per game. So far this season she has hit a career high 19 points on three different occasions. The last came against Bowling Green (Jan. 14) when she was able to penetrated the Falcon defense for several layups. In the season opener at Eastern Illinois on Nov. 14, Reed scored 15 points, only one off what was then her career high. She followed that up with 13 against IPFW (Nov. 22),15 against Wright State (Dec. 2),13 against Dayton (Dec. 10) and 15 against Butler (Dec. 13). Against Air Force (Dec. 6), she showed her defensive abilities, coming up with a career-high five steals. FORD TOUGH: Senior center Stephanie Ford (Indianapolis, Ind.) was named the team s most improved player last season, and the carryover appears to have continued this year. In the exhibition game against the Hoosier Lady Stars, Ford came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points, which would have been a career high in a regular game. She accomplished that on 8-of-10 shooting in only 16 minutes of action. Ford has started six games this season and is averaging 4.2 points and 3.4 rebounds for the season. She is especially strong in the transition game, often blocking out her defender to give one of the guards a clear path to the basket for an easy layup. Her best performance came against Texas-Pan American (Dec. 5), where she played a season-high 28 minutes, grabbed six rebounds (equalling her best of the year) and registered her first multiple block game of the year. Ford currently has 74 career blocks, which ranks seventh on the RedHawks all-time list. 5 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L BOYER S AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS: The jump from high school to college is difficult, and there is always a learning curve, but freshman guard Maggie Boyer (Lebanon, Ind.) has adjusted quite well to the college game. A fantastic shooter, she currently ranks eighth (as of Jan. 11) in the nation in three-point field goal percentage at.484 (30-for-62). She has started 10 of the 15 games she has appeared in this season and is the team s third leading scorer at 9.8 points per game. Boyer is looking to become only the sixth RedHawk freshman to average in double digits for scoring during their freshman season. Boyer got off to a terrific start, scoring 17 points in her first career game against Eastern Illinois (Nov. 14). Boyer shot 6-for-12 and hit three three-point baskets Boyer had another impressive game in the RedHawks overtime win over Dayton (Dec. 10). She hit four threepoint baskets and played strong defense on the Flyers starting guards, helping to hold them to 10-for-27 shooting. Boyer has now topped double figures in eight games this season. She established career bests for rebounds (six) against Dayton and assists (three) against Texas- Pan American (Dec. 5). She set a new career high on Dec. 29 with 19 points against Towson, scoring 17 in the second half. Boyer matched that career high with 19 points against Kent State (Jan. 10) putting in another four three-pointers. WISNER CLEANS UP BOARDS: Another freshman with a strong start to her college career is forward Erin Wisner (Solon, Ohio). She currently ranks second on the team in rebounding at 5.0 per contest and enjoyed a breakout game of 11 points and seven boards against Wake Forest (Nov. 29). She set a new career high with 13 points against Akron (Jan. 7) despite playing only 10 minutes due to foul trouble. Having moved into the starting lineup for MAC play, Wisner is averaging 8.3 points per game during conference contests. BROWN DOES THE LITTLE THINGS: Junior Ashleigh Brown (Delaware, Ohio) has been Miami s energy player this season, grabbing the key rebounds, diving for the loose balls or just motivating the team with her effort. However, she has shown signs of being the star player when she is needed. She scored a career high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting against Murray State (Dec. 21), and also pulled down seven rebounds (five offensive), three steals and a block. She topped double figures in scoring for the second time against Texas-Pan American (Dec. 5) when she tallied 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Against La Salle (Nov. 25), she gained a then career-high 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting, and also recorded five rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and three steals. Against Dayton (Dec. 10) she matched a career high with nine rebounds and followed it up with eight points and seven rebounds in a career high 36 minutes against Butler (Dec. 13). So far this season she is fifth on the team in scoring with 5.9 points per game and third with 4.8 rebounds per game. After averaging only 7.5 minutes per game during her first two seasons as a RedHawk, Brown is second on the team this year with an average of 25.8 minutes played per game this year. HANDING OUT THE HELPERS: Miami was credited with 20 assists against Texas-Pan American (Dec. 5) with six different players handing out at least one. The total was just one shy of the season high of 21, registered against Wright State in the previous outing. The RedHawks also topped 15 assists against Kent State (18) Dayton (18), La Salle (17), Butler (17), Air Force (16) and Akron (16). With an average of 14.2 assists per game, the RedHawks ranks 88th in the nation as a team in that category as of Jan. 11 WINNING STREAKS: A key to last year s NCAA Tournament run was a seven-game winning streak from January 29 through Feb. 20. After dropping a game to Bowling Green on Feb. 23, the RedHawks immediately went on another six-game winning streak from Feb. 27 through Mar. 15 that culminated in a MAC Tournament Championship. While Miami has had several long winning streaks in the past, including a recent 12-game winning streak in 2004, they usually occur during the conference season. The RedHawks recent four-game non-conference winning streak that began with a win over Wright State (Dec. 2) and also included two wins at the Air Force Classic (Dec. 5-6) and an overtime win against Dayton (Dec. 10) was the longest since the RedHawks won four in a row during the non-conference season. The longest non-conference winning streak for the Miami since MAC play began ( ) is six games, set after the RedHawks won their last five non-conference games in the season and then opened the season with a win over Wichita State. THE NEWCOMERS: Six freshmen make up one of the strongest recruiting classes on paper in Miami history. The class includes Michelle Oswalt (Lafayette, Ind.), who was originally part of last year s class, but an injury caused her to miss the season, and she made her Miami debut against Eastern Illinois. She is currently sidelined after suffering an injury in that game. She is joined in the backcourt by Maggie Boyer and Ariel Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio). In the front court are Erin Wisner, Rachael Hencke (Grafton, Wisc.) and Lillian Pitts (Shaker Heights, Ohio). Hencke has appeared in all 16 games this season and set a new career high with seven rebounds against Akron (Jan. 7). Pitts has also appeared in all 16 games in the post establishing a strong, athletic defensive presence. Thomas has appeared in 10 games at guard.
