LOCAL SCHOOL RIVALS: With the exception of Ball State, which is approximently 75 miles away (but in a different state), there is a significant distance between Miami and its Mid-Amer- ican Conference rivals. For that reason, head Coach Maria Fantanarosa is making a concerted effort to schedule the local Division I schools in the greater Cincinnati/Dayton area that are not in the RedHawks conference. After facing Wright State last week, the RedHawks will face Day- ton for the first time in nine years. Miami has been very competitive against the local schools, with a 19-3 all-time record against Wright State and a 10-7 record against Xavier. It is all-time against Dayton and all-time agianst Cincinnati. 3. NOON ON A WEEKDAY?: This game was scheduled as part of an educational day called Learning Can Take You Higher, When You Do It with Rudy Flyer, by the University of Dayton. It is bringing in several local elementary schools from the Dayton area and will have various educational activities in addition to the basketball game. Miami will do something similar on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009 when it hosts Ohio for a 1 p.m. game. These events have been very successful in the past. A recent midday weekday game on Tuesday, Nov. 25 for Central Michigan drew 4,478 fans to Rose Arena.

2 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L LAST GAME: Miami used a 15-0 run midway through the second half to reverse a five-point deficit, then scored 10 straight points later in the period to earn a victory over host Air Force in the championship game of the Air Force Classic Saturday afternoon. Jenna Schone was named tournament MVP after tallying 12 points and six assists in the final game. Jaclyn Leininger scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to earn all-tournament honors, while Ashley Hawkins added 10 points and six assists. The RedHawks (5-2) trailed with 13:48 remaining in the game when they executed their second-longest scoring streak of the season. They tallied 15 straight points from four different players to open their first double-digit advantage of the game, at the 10:24 mark. The Falcons, who have never won their own tournament in its 13-year existence, closed the gap to five, 49-44, with 6:43 left, but Maggie Boyer hit back-to-back threes to start a 10-0 run that pushed the lead back to 15, 59-44, by the 4:18 mark. Miami finished the game with a shooting percentage of 43.1 percent. The RedHawks forced 24 turnovers, while committing only 13 of their own. The Falcons held a slim advantage on the boards. ABOUT DAYTON: Dayton is 6-3 in the season and is coming off an impressive road victory at Penn State on Dec. 6. The Flyers have won six of their last seven games after starting the season 0-2. Dayton has three players averaging double figures and is led by sophomore guard Kristin Daugherty. She averages 16.2 points per game. Freshman forward Justine Raterman is next at 13.8 points per game, and she also leads the team with 9.6 rebounds per game. Junior forward Kendel Ross averages 11.4 points per game. Four of the five Flyers starters are 6-0 or taller. Prior to that, Miami had won seven of the previous eight meetings between the schools. MIAMI VS. ATLANTIC 10: The RedHawks are a all-time against the current 14 members of the Atlantic 10 conference. That numbers is a bit misleading as 45 of those 54 games have come against Dayton (12-15 all-time) and Xavier (10-7 all-time). Miami is 1-2 against La Salle, 3-1 against Saint Louis, 1-1 against Temple and 1-0 against Rhode Island. Miami has never faced Charlotte, Duquesne, Fordham, George Washington, Massachusetts, Richmond, Saint Joesph s or St. Bonaventure. UP NEXT FOR REDHAWKS: It s home for the holidays for the RedHawks. Miami welcomes Butler to Millett Hall Saturday at 2 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men facing Valparaiso at 4 p.m. After taking the next week off for final exams, the RedHawks will host Murray State on Dec. 21 at 2 p.m., before shutting down for Christmas break. Record...Round Lost in First Round Total Head Coach Maria Fantanarosa: Her tenth season at the helm of her alma mater was one to remember as Miami head coach Maria Fantanarosa led the RedHawks to the program s first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. Miami won 12 of its final 13 games, captured the MAC Tournament championship and earned the automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Since returning to her alma mater as head coach prior to the season, Fantanarosa has guided a resurgent program to eight winning seasons in the past 10 years, including two Mid-American Conference East Division crowns, the MAC regular-season championship and the 2008 MAC Tournament championship. Fantanarosa became Miami s all-time winningest coach in program history with her 132nd win, an victory over IUPUI on Dec. 30, 2006, passing Pam Wettig, who previously held the mark with a career record of Fantanarosa s all-time record at Miami now stands at Fantanarosa s RedHawks have been consistently recognized for their outstanding achievements and contributions on and off the court. As a result, Director of Athletics Brad Bates recently extended Fantanarosa s contract through the season, noting that the mentor of the Red and White continues to attract and produce high-quality student-athletes. A native of Kulpmont, Pa., Fantanarosa earned her bachelor s degree in speech Miami Coaching Wins Leaders Wins 1. Maria Fantanarosa (1998-) Pam Wettig ( ) Linda Wunder ( ) Lisa Bradley ( ) Susan DeKalb ( ) communication with a minor in coaching science from Miami in She received her master s degree in sports administration from Xavier in Fantanarosa and her husband, Tim Morrow, have two daughters, Lauren (five) and Allison (three). SWISH, SWISH, SWISH: Miami connected on 54.9 percent of its shots against Texas-Pan American, by far its best effort of the season. The RedHawks previous high was 45.9 percent against La Salle on Nov. 26. MU connected on seven three-pointers against the Lady Broncs, matching its season high in the opener at Eastern Illinois. The difference from that night was two less attempts, resulting in the second-best three-point shooting effort of the year,.438. Only LaSalle surrendered a better percentage (.556). DOUBLE-DIGIT RUNS: Miami has used double digit scoring runs to help break close games open this season. Most notably, the RedHawks coasted to victory over Texas-Pan American (Dec. 5) on the heels of a 19-0 run over a span of 6:48. The streak was longest of the year so far. Miami has six runs of 10 or more straight points this season. The RedHawks tallied 16 straight points against IPFW, 15-0 and 10-0 runs against Air Force (Dec. 6) and had 11-0 runs against both Eastern Illinois (Nov. 14) and LaSalle (Nov. 25). SCHONE RUNS THE SHOW: One of the major keys to success for the RedHawks will be the performance of senior point guard Jenna Schone (Pickerington, Ohio). A second-team All-MAC selection a year ago and preseason pick in October, she is the team s leading scorer at 16.3 points per game. She has led the team in scoring four times this season, including three of the last four games. Schone has been on a torrid assist pace, averaging 7.3 assists per game the last three games, and she now leads the team with 34 assists. Last season, she set Miami s single-season assist record with 175, as well as the single-season three-point field goal record with 84. Schone is currently 137 assists shy of Heather Cusick s Miami career record of 596 and 36 three-point field goals short of Cusick s career record of 230. WELCOME BACK LEININGER: Senior forward Jaclyn Leininger (Winona Lake, Ind.) has showed no signs of the season-ending knee injury she suffered in a presason scimmage last year. She ranks second on the team in scoring this year at 10.9 points per game, topping double figures in four games, including the last two (14 vs. UTPA, Dec. 5 and 15 vs. Air Force, Dec. 6). She also is the team s top rebounder at 7.0 per contest, grabbing at least seven on four occasions (twice in double figures).

4 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L HAWK FACTOR: Ashley Hawkins (Henderson, Ky.) seems to have found her groove as the team s sixth man and first guard off the bench. She has spent time as both the shooting guard, as well as the backup point guard in the rare times Schone is off the floor. Hawkins has been a great distributor this season with 32 assists, an average of 4.6 per game. She has at least three assists in every game this season. Hawkins has appeared in 98 career games, starting 43. She currently has 690 career points and needs just 310 points to reach 1,000. REED THIS YEAR S BREAKOUT PLAYER?: Every season, one player typically makes a huge jump in her contribution from the previous year. One of the candidates for breakout player this season has to be junior guard Courtney Reed (Andrews, Ind.). So far this season she has started all seven games and is third on the team in scoring averaging 10.9 points. Compare that to her first two years, where she appeared in a combined 64 games, starting only 11 (all in ), and averaging 5.8 points per game. In the season opener at Eastern Illinois on Nov. 14, she scored 15 points, only one off her career high. She followed that up with 13 against IPFW (Nov. 22) and 15 against Wright State (Dec. 2). Against Air Force (Dec. 6), she showed her defensive abilities, coming up with a career-high five steals. FORD TOUGH: Senior center Stephanie Ford (Indianapolis, Ind.) was named the team s most improved player last season, and the carryover appears to have continued this year. In the exhibition game against the Hoosier Lady Stars, Ford came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points, which would have been a career high in a regular game. She accomplished that on 8-of-10 shooting in only 16 minutes of action. Ford has started the last five games and is averaging 5.6 points and 3.7 rebounds for the season. Her best performance came against Texas-Pan American (Dec. 5), where she played a season-high 28 minutes, grabbed six rebounds (equalling her best of the year) and registered her first multiple block game of the year. Ford currently has 70 career blocks, which ranks seventh on the RedHawks all-time list. BOYER S IMPRESSIVE DEBUT: The jump from high school to college is difficult, and there is always a learning curve, but freshman guard Maggie Boyer (Lebanon, Ind.) showed she might not take that much time to adjust after scoring 17 points in her first career game against Eastern Illinois (Nov. 14). Boyer shot 6-for-12 and hit three three-point baskets. Boyer also topped double figures against Wright State (Dec. 2) with 10 points. She established new career bests for rebounds and assists (three each) against Texas-Pan American (Dec. 5). Boyer is the leading scorer among freshmen, ranking fourth overall at 7.2 points per contest. WISNER CLEANS UP BOARDS: Another freshman with a strong start to her college career is forward Erin Wisner (Solon, Ohio). She currently ranks second on the team in rebounding at 5.3 per contest and enjoyed a breakout game of 11 points and seven boards against Wake Forest (Nov. 29). BROWN DOES THE LITTLE THINGS: Junior Ashleigh Brown (Delaware, Ohio) has been Miami s energy player this season, grabbing the key rebounds, diving for the loose balls or just motivating the team with her effort. She topped double figures in scoring for the second time against Texas-Pan American (Dec. 5) when she tallied 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Against La Salle, she gained a career-high 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting, and also recorded five rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and three steals. ONE GREAT HALF: Miami shot 70.9 percent after intermission against Texas-Pan American (Dec. 5). The effort marked the best 20-minute span of the season for the RedHawks, topping a 48.4 percent first-half against Wright State. HANDING OUT THE HELPERS: Miami was credited with 20 assists against Texas-Pan American (Dec. 5) with six different players handing out at least one. The total was just one shy of the season high of 21, registered against Wright State in the previous outing. The RedHawks also topped double figures in assists against LaSalle (17) and Air Force (16). 5 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L SEASON MILESTONES: While appearing in its first NCAA Tournament will always be the major highlight of the campaign, several players reached individual milestones that were honored. On January 29, 2008, senior point guard Amanda Jackson became the all-time leading scorer for the RedHawks, passing Heather Cusick. She finished her career with 1,979 points. Jackson also became the career leader in field goals made, field goals attempted, free throws made and total number of 20-point scoring efforts. Junior point guard Jenna Schone became the 18th RedHawk to score 1,000 points during her career. She is currently 14th on the career list with 1,121 points. Senior forward Laura Markwood had 359 rebounds for the season, the top single-season performance by any Mid-American Conference player. It shattered the previous Miami single-season high by 74 caroms. She finished the season ranked seventh nationally with a 10.6 rebounds per game average. TEAM HONORS: At Miami Basketball s annual end of the year banquet, the team handed out its postseason awards. Miami head coach Maria Fantanarosa was recognized for being named Ohio Coach of the Year by the Columbus Dispatch, while senior Amanda Jackson was recognized for being selected to the All-MAC First Team as well as the MAC Tournament MVP. Schone was honored for her Second-Team All-MAC selection, as well as her spot on the MAC All-Tournament Team, and Laura Markwood was recognized for being named Third Team All-MAC. The other individual awards are as follows: Rebounder of the Year - Laura Markwood Most Improved Player - Stephanie Ford Best Defensive Player - Laura Markwood The Hawk Award - Jenna Schone Team MVP - Amanda Jackson RING CEREMONY: On Oct. 9, the team reported to the basketball offices for what they assumed was one of the last pre-season conditioning days of the year. They were prepared - swimsuits, towels and tennis shoes - for a land and pool workout. But once everyone arrived, head coach Maria Fantanarosa huddled the team and explained plans had changed. Instead of the expected workout, they were to sprint to one of the coach s cars to begin a scavenger hunt that would take them all over campus. Unbeknownst to them, the players were about to embark on a journey filled with Miami fun facts and team bonding activities that would eventually lead them back to Millett Hall for a memorable ring ceremony! The coaching staff drove the players to Hoyt Hall (Western campus) where they received their first clue and began the adventure. At each of the five checkpoints, the team had an activity to complete together before receiving their next clue. And, the upperclassmen were to teach the freshmen the Miami Fight Song along the way. The first task was for the team to sing songs with the pre-school kids at Mini University. After completing the mission and learning the first two lines of the Fight Song, they received their next clue. They were to travel to the reflecting pool where they would make a wish for the season and throw a penny into the water! After singing the song they learned at Mini University, they received clue three, which directed them to the seal at the center of campus. Here the task was to learn facts about each other s past, present and future before heading to the next destination. The fourth checkpoint was Withrow Court where they read an article and facts about Title IX before discussing women who paved the way for them. Finally, it was 4:30 p.m...the journey was almost complete...four of the five checkpoints had been reached. There was only one stop left... The sounds of the Miami Fight Song echoed inside a dark gym at Millett Hall as the fourteen members of the Miami women s basketball team walked arm in arm to the last stop on the treasure hunt Individual MAC Rankings CONFERENCE ONLY GAMES Scoring...N/A Free Throw Pct....N/A Rebounding...N/A FG Pct....N/A Assists...N/A Steals...N/A 3-PT FG Made...N/A Blocks...N/A Assist/Turnover Ratio...N/A Offensive Rebounds... At the conclusion of the video, Jaclyn Leininger and Jenna Schone climbed the ladder and pulled the box off the rim. As the spotlight followed the team to the free throw line, they opened the package together while red and white balloons poured from the ceiling. Screams were abundant as it became evident the package contained their championship rings. The freshmen witnessed the upperclassmen s excitement, but also received rings of their own...candy rings with a note attached saying, DREAM BIG!
