The Huskies will make their next to last Pac-10 road trip of the season, starting with a Thursday night 6:00 p.m. contest in Oregon State s Gill Coliseum. The Huskies have won eight-straight vs. the Beavers and have a chance to reach their second longest streak ever against OSU. On The Airwaves Thursday s game can be found on Sports Radio KJR 950-AM in Seattle and the Husky IMG College Sports Network throughout the region. Bob Rondeau will call play-by-play and Jason Hamilton will provide color commentary. FSN NW will telecast the game with Rich Burk and Lamar Hurd calling the action. UW vs. Oregon State History UW leads the all-time series between the two schools by a margin since the fi rst meeting in Washington has won eightstraight overall -- including on Jan. 8 in Seattle -- equaling the second-longest streak ever and two short of UW s all-time record of 10. The Huskies won that many in a row during a span over the seasons. Lorenzo Romar is 14-4 all-time against the Beavs, all decisions coming during his UW tenure. OSU coach Craig Robinson is 0-6 all-time against UW. OSU s last win was a decision on Feb. 22, 2007 in Corvallis. Scouting Oregon State The Beavers are 8-12 this season, 3-6 in Pac-10 action which puts them tied for 8th in the conference. After starting 2-0 in conference, OSU has lost six of their last seven games. At Gill Coliseum, OSU is 7-5 this year. Sophomore guard Jared Cunningham has emerged as the team s leader with 13.7 ppg and a Pac-10 best 2.9 steals per game. He is coming off his worst outing of the season at Stanford where he scored one point and fouled out in 16 minutes of action. Guard Calvin Haynes is the Beavers second-leading scorer at 10.1 ppg. The Beavers play a pressing zone defense that has helped them to the top of the Pac-10 with 10.3 steals per game, 2.1 more than the next closest team. Romar is the dean of coaching in the Pac-10 having spent more seasons at Washington than any other current Pac-10 coach at their school. Romar owns a (.660) record at Washington and is (.603) in 15 seasons as a head coach. The fi rst African-American head basketball coach at UW, he moved to third all-time in victories at UW after passing Tippy Dye against Cal on Jan. 16, That win was also the 250th overall during his coaching career. Romar has led Washington fi ve NCAA Tournament Appearances, including three-straight (2004, 05, 06) and the school s fi rst back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances (2005 & 06). Overall, he has led Washington to three Sweet 16 appearances. He was the 2005 Pac-10 and Black Coaches Association Coach of the Year. Romar played point guard for Marv Harshman s 1979 and 1980 teams and spent fi ve years in the NBA after college. Prior to UW, Romar served as the head coach at Saint Louis ( ) and Pepperdine ( ) and was an assistant coach at UCLA ( ) - He helped lead the Bruins to the 1995 national title. A native of Compton, Calif., he graduated from Pius X High School. Romar and his wife, Leona, have three daughters: Terra, Tavia and Taylor - a current UW cheerleader. Coach Romar In The Media Coach Romar s weekly show on Sports Radio 950 AM is every Monday and be held from 6-7 p.m. at Anthony s Shilshole Restaurant. Remaingin January shows include: 1/31 2/7, 2/14, 2/21, 2/28 3/7, 3/14. Additionally, Romar typically holds his weekly press conference on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. in the Alaska Airlines Arena Media workroom (room 140). In addition, UWTV will broadcast a replay of the press conference at 11:00 p.m. PT each Tuesday night. UWTV can be found on channel 27 in the Seattle area. Unprecedented Success Under Romar The Huskies are enjoying their greatest stretch of success in team history under the direction of Lorenzo Romar. Besides three Sweet 16 appearnaces, two Pac-10 Tournament championships and one regular-season Pac-10 title, the numbers show Romar has entered unchartered territory. From Romar s third season at UW -- to 2010, the Huskies won 142 games, the most ever in a six-year span of UW basketball history. He has averaged 21.3 wins per season and has amassed four of the seven largest single-season win totals in UW history. 4 a Washington Men s Basketball Husky Happenings Off To Oregon Washington-Oregon History Washington owns a commanding series lead over the Ducks since the schools fi rst played in The Huskies dominated the series over the fi rst 19 seasons, losing just four of the fi rst 27 meetings. More recently, Washington has won 11 of the last 15 games, including an decision on Jan. 6 in Seattle. UW is trying to win three-straight in Eugene for the fi rst time since UW had an overall fi ve-game win streak between Lorenzo Romar is 12-6 overall against the Ducks, 4-4 in Eugene. Last season UW won at Mac Court 86-72, but lost at home Scouting Oregon The Ducks on on the season, 3-6 in Pac-10 action with a Thursday night meeting vs. Washington State on deck. Oregon is 8-6 at home and will be hosting just their second home stand at newly opened 12,541-seat Matthew Knight Arena. Forward Joevan Catron has emerged as Oregon s go-to-guy with 15.7 ppg (5th in Pac-10) and 6.4 rpg (9th). Pac-10 Notes UW s Trends UW started 7-1 in the Pac-10 for the fi rst time since UW s eight-game win streak over OSU is their longest current streak vs. a Pac-10 foe. Dating back to last season, Washington has won seven of its last nine Pac-10 road games. Washington went 3-1 at Cal, Stanford, UCLA & USC for the fi rst time since The Huskies started 4-0 in Pac-10 play for the fi rst time since 1984 when they jumped out of the gate 6-0. Before losing to Stanford, UW had its longest Pac- 10 win streak since the conference formed in 1978 with 11-straight games dating back to last season, including three Pac-10 Tournament games. Matthew Bryan-Amaning holds a slim lead by one rebound over Oregon s Joevan Catron for active career leaders in Pac-10 rebounding. Venoy Overton is the active career Pac-10 leader in assists and steals. Isaiah Thomas and Matthew Bryan-Amaning are the fi rst different Huskies to be honored as Pac-10 Players of the Week in back-to-back weeks. UW started the Pac-10 season by sweeping a series on the road for the fi rst time since 1976 when they swept Stanford and Cal. UW s overtime victory at USC was Washington s fi rst-ever Pac-10-opening OT victory on the road. The only other overtime win UW had in a Pac-10 opener was on Jan. 11, 1992 vs. WSU at Hec Ed. The Huskies were 11-7 overall and fi nished third in the Pac-10 last season. They were 7-2 at home and 4-5 on the road. The Huskies started last year 0-5 on the road before finishing the season 4-0 away from home. UW s Pac-10 POW Winners So far, the Huskies have won Pac-10 Player of the Week honors three times this season. Matthew Bryan-Amaning was the the fi rst to earn the honors after Washington swept USC and UCLA in Los Angeles. Isaiah Thomas won for his efforts vs. Oregon and OSU the following week. MBA and Thomas were the fi rst different Huskies to win the award in back-toback weeks. It marks the fi rst time since the Pac-10 started handing out weekly honors that two different Huskies have won in consecutive weeks. Thomas earned the award a second time after UW swept the Arizona schools. Overall, Huskies have earned the weekly honor 41 times, 22 times during Lorenzo Romar s coaching tenure. They also rank second in fi eld goal percentage (48.3%) 3-point fi eld goal percentage (39.2%), fi eld goal percentage defense (40.8%), blocks (5.0) and defensive rebounds (26.2). The Pick Of The Pac For the fi rst time in school history, Washington was selected by media that covers the Pacifi c-10 Conference as the preseason favorites. Washington garnered 348 votes including 33 of 35 fi rst place nods in becoming the fi rst non-california or Arizona school to be anointed as conference favorites. See entire voting results on page 4. Husky Notes Alaska Airlines Arena Alaska Airlines and the University of Washington announced on Jan. 20 a partnership to rename UW s on-campus basketball arena Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The arena sponsorship is part of a fi ve-year agreement to support University of Washington Athletics approved by the university s Board of Regents. Alaska Airlines has committed $525,000 annually in cash and trade for the arena naming rights in addition to the airline s $175,000 ongoing athletics sponsorship. Court signage, including the Alaska Airlines logo, were unveiled at the Arizona game and exterior signage will be installed within the next eight weeks. The annual schedule will include games against an institution s traditional rival both home and away. In addition, each institution will play six other opponents both home and away (for two consecutive years), and four opponents on a single game basis - two at home and two away. The single-play opponents will rotate every two years. UW Has Longest-Lasting Pac-10 Membership A founding member of the Pacific Coast Conference in 1915, Washington enjoys a long-lasting association with the nation s most successful intercollegiate athletic league. The PCC competed until In 1959, the Athletic Association of Western Universities was formed and, in 1968, became the Pacific-8 Conference. In 1978 two more schools were added and the current Pacific-10 Conference became reality. Thomas is the first Division I player since Northeastern s Jose Juan Barea in Feb to post backto-back games with at least 20 points and 10 assists. Thomas 13 assists at Cal were the most by a Husky since Will Conroy had 14 at Cal on 3/3/05. Thomas is just the second player in UW history with back-to-back 10+ assist games (Raphael Stone, 1970). Matthew Bryan-Amaning needs 3 steals to be just the 2nd UW player with 100 blocks and steals. He also needs 39 points to become the 36th Husky with 1,000 career points Washington has hit the 100-point plateau a teamrecord tying five times this year (also ). Isaiah Thomas has taken control of the Pac-10 lead for assists and is averaging 5.8 per game and has 22 more than the next closest Pac-10 player. He ups his average to 8.0 in conference-only action. He has moved into UW s top-10 all-time list, thanks in large part to 13 dimes against Cal on Jan. 16. His total that day is the most since Will Conroy recorded 14 on 3/3/05 at Cal. He is just the 8th Husky to ever record 13 or more assists in a game. He followed that night up with 10 against Arizona to become just the second Husky with back-to back games with 10+ assists. They also nearly missed reaching 100 when they scored 98 against Eastern Washington. Thomas Makes Wooden Award Mid-Season List; Cousy Finalist The John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 30 was announced Jan. 6 by The Los Angeles Athletic Club and junior guard Isaiah Thomas was on the list. On Jan. 10 he was named one of 20 fi nalists for the Cousy Award, handed out to the nation s top point guard. He is also one of 50 nominated for the Naismith Award.He was also a Wooden Award and Naismith nominee in Wins vs. Losses Stats UW is 15-0 when it outshoots their opponent and 0-5 when they are outshot. UW is 9-0 when they shoot 50% or better. In Washington s 15 wins, the team has averaged 93.2 points, while in its fi ve losses they have averaged 67.2 points, a discrepancy of 26 points. UW is shooting 50.8% from the fi eld and 41.3% from 3-point range in wins, 39.3% from the fi eld and 31.8% from beyond the arc in losses. Friendly Confines Of Home Losing at Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion is rare under coach Lorenzo Romar s watch -- especially during the non-conference slate. The Huskies have won 23 straight non-conference games at Alaska Airlines Arena, dating back to a home loss on March 14, 2008 in the College Basketball Invitational to Valparaiso. In nine years with Romar at the helm, UW is (.846) overall at home, 66-5 (.930) in non-pac-10 games. This season Washington has won by an average of points at home and dating back to last season has won 10-straight games by 10 or more points. Gaddy Tears ACL Sophomore Abdul Gaddy will miss the remainder of the 2011 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during practice on Jan. 4. Gaddy sustained the injury when he planted his left leg while driving to the basket. He underwent successful surgery on Jan. 14 at UW Medical Center. Typical recovery time from ACL surgery is six-to-nine months. Gaddy was leading the Pac-10 in assist to turnover ratio at 3.1 (49 assists/16 turnovers). His 3.8 assists per game was the seventh best average in the Pac-10 Conference and he also ranked ninth in three-point shooting percentage (40.6%). A starter in all 13 games, Gaddy raised his scoring average to 8.5 points per game, up from 3.9 ppg as a freshman. Overall, Gaddy has played in 49 games, 42 starts - 41 of which have come consecutively. Bob Rondeau Honored Bob Rondeau, the voice of the Huskies, has been named the state of Washington s Sportscaster of the Year for the eighth time, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association announced on Jan. 9. Rondeau, who handles the play-by-play for Husky football and men s basketball on KJR 950-AM, along with a variety of other duties related to UW athletics, was honored along with Seattle Times baseball writer Larry Stone, who was named the state s Sportswriter of the Year. Among The Nation s Best Through Sunday s action, UW is second in the nation with 86.7 points per game, trailing only VMI (91.6). UW is also 5th in scoring margin (+17.7). UW Single Game Records Fall The Huskies set a new team record for most free throws made while shooting a perfect 100%, making all 16 of their tries vs. Texas A&M. Their previous bests were a couple of 13-for-13 efforts. It is the second team-record UW has equaled or surpassed as they tied the mark for most 3-pointers in a game by hitting 17 vs. Virginia in the Maui Invitational. Record Scoring Output Washington shattered the record for its best offensive output over a three-game span in team history with 322 points (107.3 per game) to start the season. After opening the season with 118 points vs. McNeese State, the Huskies scored 98 against Eastern Washington and 106 against Virginia. In a three-game span in , the Huskies totaled 305 against Sacred Heart, Houston and California. Putting On A Shooting Clinic UW tied their all-time mark for 3-pointers made with 17 against Virginia (out of 26 attempts). 6 a Washington Men s Basketball Husky Happenings UW vs. Top-10 Teams After UW s loss to No. 8 Kentucky and No. 2 Michigan State, the Huskies are all-time against teams ranked in the top-10, including 2-17 on a neutral court. The Huskies last win over a top-10 team was in last year s second round of the NCAA Tournament when they soundly beat No. 8 New Mexico. Vs. Ranked Foes The Huskies are 0-2 against teams ranked in the AP top-25. Overall, the UW is against AP ranked opponents since Jan. 1, UW has won its last four against ranked foes in the confi nes of Alaska Airlines Arena and are 16-5 over the last 21 contests against ranked foes at home. Overall, Washington is all-time at home during the decade. UW had lost its previous 8 decisions against ranked nonconference opponents before ending a three-year drought by beating Texas A&M on Dec. 22. Five New Faces Washington welcomes five players that will see their fi rst Husky action this season. C.J. Wilcox spent the 2010 season redshirting but quickly earned the reputation as the team s best shooter. UW added 7-foot JC transfer Aziz N Diaye out of the College of Southern Idaho who will help provide an inside presence. Coaches say 6-5 guard Terrence Ross is the most athletic player on the team. Desmond Simmons is a 6-7 forward that will redshirt, but will help in practice as he has a non-stop motor. Thomas Scores A Record With 1,134 points through two seasons, Isaiah Thomas scored more points than any Husky in their fi rst two years. He is one of two players to reach 1,000 points in their first two seasons, joining Doug Smart (1,021). Thomas is the 35th Husky to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau and entered the year ranking 26th on the all-time scoring list. Wroten was a member of the gold medal winning 2010 USA Basketball Men s Developmental National Team and was named to the Long Beach Press Telegram s Best in the West poll. At an October Clash of the Classes all-star game featuring the top Washington and Oregon prospects, Wroten scored 42 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out seven assists to earn MVP honors. Hikeem Stewart is a 6-3 guard that was a second-team All-Seattle Metro member as a junior and helped lead Rainier Beach to the Class 3A State Tournament. Jernard Jarreau is a 6-10 forward from New Orleans that has grown seven inches since starting high school but still possesses guard skills. Andrew Andrews is a point guard from Portland s Benson HS and will either go to a prep school after graduating or redshirt his fi rst season at UW. 7 Maui Notables Washington tied a school record with 17 threepoint buckets in its win over Virginia. The 106 points allowed by Virginia and 43 point defeat were the most/worst defeat by a Tony Bennett-led squad. UW has more assists (44 to 27 total) and fewer turnovers (38 to 52) than their opponent in each of the three games. Isaiah Thomas (14.7) and Justin Holiday (11.3) were the only Huskies to score in double fi gures in all three games. C.J. Wilcox and Terrence Ross each notched career-highs (Wilcox since broken) vs. Virginia with 17 and 12 points, respectively, combining to go 8x11 from three-point range. Darnell Gant had two of the best games of his career against Kentucky and Michigan St., scoring a career-high 10 points (all in the fi rst half) vs. the Wildcats and nine points vs. the Spartans. The Dawgs had a streak of 11 straight wins against Pac-10 foes, the longest conference winning streak in UW history. UW has led the Pac-10 in scoring two-consecutive seasons, putting up 79.2 last year and 78.6 points per game in The Huskies have also led the conference in rebounds and rebound margin over the past two years. In fact UW has led the lead in rebounds in four of the last six seasons and rebound margin in four-of-fi ve. Washington s 52 wins in 2009 and 2010 lead the conference (ASU 2nd with 47). In 2010, UW averaged 83.5 points in wins, 68.1 points in losses. Maui Invitational Recap Washington went 1-2 in the EA Sports Maui Invitational and took home fourth out of the eight-team fi eld. The Huskies began the tourney in record-setting fashion handing Virginia coach Tony Bennett the worst loss of his career, , behind a UW record-tying 17 three-point buckets. In the semifi - nals, No. 8 Kentucky handed the Huskies their fi rst loss of the season, 67-74, overcoming a one-point halftime deficit. Breshers Retires From Hoops Sophomore Tyreese Breshers, who the Huskies were counting on to help in the post this season, was forced to retire from playing basketball because of an undisclosed medical condition. The team will miss Breshers, a 6-7, 255-pound forward, inside presence. He played in 36 games as a redshirt freshman and averaged 3.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and blocked 26 shots. UW Gets TV Exposure Once again, the Huskies will get plenty of exposure on television with a minimum of 23 games on TV. The Huskies will be on FSN at least 18 times and on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU at least fi ve times. Connect(icut) The Dots Second-year assistant coach Raphael Chillious was head coach at high school basketball powerhouse South Kent in Connecticut before joining the Husky staff (he worked for Nike previously). Chillious coached nearly 40 players that advanced their careers and NCAA Division I schools and even coached three that are currently playing in the NBA - Josh Boone (New Jersey Nets), Dorrell Wright (Miami Heat) and Andray Blatche (Washington Wizards). Excellence In Academics According to a 2010 fi nding, under the direction of Lorenzo Romar, UW is graduating its players. Through 2010, of the 23 players recruited by Romar that did not transfer to another school, 19 of them have graduated. Huskies Finished 2010 Strong Washington entered the Sweet 16 riding a nine-game win streak, before losing to West Virginia to end their season and fi nish with a record. Overall, they won 14 of their last 17 games. A big reason for their success was the sudden ability to win away from Hec Edmundson Pavilion. UW started the season 0-6 on the road and 0-1 at neutral sites, but ended the season going 4-0 on the road and 5-1 at neutral sites during the Pac-10 Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament.
