The Huskies are against AP ranked opponents since Jan. 1, 2000? UW has won its last three against ranked foes in the confi nes of Bank of America Arena and are 15-5 over the last 20 contests against ranked foes at home. Overall, Washington is all-time at home during the decade. UW has lost its last 8 decisions against ranked non-conference opponents, with the last win coming vs. No. 12 LSU on 12/20/2006. Washington And Texas A&M History Texas A&M holds the advantage all-time 3-1 over Washington, and has not lost to the Huskies since the 1951 NCAA tournament. The teams last met in the NIT Season Tip-off on Nov. 21, It was a battle of the unbeatens under the lights of Madison Square Garden, with Texas A&M downing Washington Donald Sloan scored 18 points while Joseph Jones and Dominique Kirk added 17 and 15 respectively to lead a balanced Aggie attack. Future lottery pick DeAndre Jordan contributed with eight points and 11 rebounds. Jon Brockman led all scorers with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Justin Dentmon was the only other Husky in double-digits with 10. The game was close until the Huskies went cold in the second half, going fi ve minutes without a fi eld goal. The Aggies have never played in Bank of America Arena. Coach Lorenzo Romar is 1-1 all-time against Texas A&M, having downed the Aggies while at Saint Louis. Scouting the Aggies Texas A&M is ranked 19th in the Associated Press poll (unranked in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll) and off to a 9-2 start after returning three starters from team that went 24-9 and won their fi rst round NCAA Tournament game. Six-foot-three senior Donald Sloan leads the Aggies with 17.3 points per game and scored 18 the last time the Huskies and Texas A&M met. Sloan is joined on the perimeter by Derrick Roland, who is second on the team at 11.1 points per contest and B.J. Holmes who averages 9.7 ppg. Inside, the Aggies are led by 6-foot-9 Bryan Davis, who is averaging just under 10 points a game and provides muscle on the glass. The Aggies already boast wins over nationally-ranked Clemson and Minnesota in the 76 Classic. Like the Huskies, their only two losses come against top-25 teams, West Virginia and New Mexico. UW In The Big-12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series This marks the third year of the Big-12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series, with Washington 1-2 all-time. The Huskies played at Oklahoma State in 2008 (L, 71-96) and hosted the Cowboys in 2009 (W, 83-65). For the fi rst time ever, Washington will play two Big-12 opponents as part of the series, after facing Texas Tech on Dec. 3. The Huskies lost that game in overtime 99-92, a crazy game that each team had a chance to win in regulation in the last seconds Washington Player Notes No. Name PPG RPG APG Notes 20 Quincy Pondexter* (F, 6-6, Sr.,) th in nation 21.5 ppg pts 6 of 9 games...stars in Nutcracker on 12/ time Pac-10 POW (12/6 & 11/16) 2 Isaiah Thomas* (G, 5-8, So.) 3 Last Time Out For Washington Quincy Pondexter scored 17 points, Isaiah Thomas had 16 and No. 24 Washington pressured Portland into 22 turnovers during an rout on Saturday night. Pondexter scored inside while Thomas drained two 3-pointers to open up a 16-2 lead over the fi rst 6 minutes. Scott Suggs had a career-high 13 points for the Huskies, forced Portland (6-4) into 12 fi rsthalf turnovers and converted them into 26 points in building a halftime cushion. Nik Raivio and Luke Sikma tried to lead the Pilots back in the second half, leading a 10-2 run to get within The Huskies answered moments later with a 14-0 run culminating in a rim-rattling alley-oop dunk from Thomas to Pondexter with just over 7 minutes left. The Huskies traveled to Portland to open last season and lost Portland returned all of its starters from that squad, but looked overmatched - Raivio doing the only damage on offense with 13 points for the Pilots. Washington fi nished with 35 points off Portland turnovers. Visions of 20/20 Quick research of ESPN.com s NCAA stats shows no teammates each average over 20 points per game, but Quincy Pondexter (21.6) and Isaiah Thomas (19.9) are the closest tandem to accomplishing the feat. The duo accounts for 373 of the team s 759 points (49.1%). The only previous Husky tandem to fi nish the season each averaging 20 points or more was Steve Hawes (20.2) and George Irvine (20.0) in In all, a player has averaged 20+ points over a season just 12 times in UW history. More Dynamic Duo Pondexter and Thomas are on pace to acount for the most points by UW teammates in school history. The Huskies will play a minimum of 31 games this season and Pondexter is on pace for 669 points, while Thomas 616. Their total of 1,285 would eclipse the 1,254 points Bob Houbregs (846) and Joe Cipriano (408) scored in The next highest scoring duo is Chris Welp (729) and Phil Zevenbergen (558), who combined for 1,247 points in Inside the Numbers... UW is averaging 22.0 turnovers in their two losses and 12.2 in their seven wins. Isaiah Thomas is the only Husky to score in double fi gures in all 9 games. Thomas and Quincy Pondexter account for 373 of the team s 759 points (49.1%). Despite just three regular contributors standing 6-foot-7 or taller, UW has outrebounded or tied their opponent in all but one game (L, at Texas Tech). Pondexter s scoring avg of 21.6 ppg would rank as fi fth highest average ever in UW history and best per game avg since Louie Nelson (23.0) in UW is 4-0 when their opponent shoots better from the fi eld, but just 3-2 when they outshoot them. The Huskies are against AP ranked opponents since Jan. 1, Vs. Ranked Foes Since 2000 The Huskies are against AP ranked opponents since Jan. 1, UW has won its last three against ranked foes in the confi nes of Bank of America Arena and are 15-5 over the last 20 contests against ranked foes at home. Overall, Washington is all-time at home during the decade. UW has lost its last 8 decisions against ranked non-conference opponents, with the last win coming vs. No. 12 LSU on 12/20/2006. Q-Pon Climbs Scoring Ladder Quincy Pondexter ranks 21st all-time on the UW scoring list with 1,285 career points. He passed Nate Robinson against Portland. Next up is Andra Griffi n (20th-1,294) and George Irvine (19th-1,314). If he keeps scoring at a clip of 21.6 ppg and plays 31 games, he will end his career No. 4 all-time in scoring (1,760). Pondexter started the season 27th on the all-time UW scoring list with 1,091 points. No Sophomore Slump Isaiah Thomas is averaging 19.9 ppg (4th best in Pac-10), which would be the second-highest average ever by a sophomore. Steve Hawes averaged 20.2 points as a sophomore in but just his fi rst year of action -- before freshmen were allowed on the varsity. Thomas is the lone Husky to score in double fi gures in all nine games. He surpassed the 700 career-point plateau against Georgetown, just his 43rd career game. Leaders Of The Pac Not only is Washington the only Pac-10 team ranked in the latest Associated Press poll (24th), there are several statistical categories in which the Huskies lead the conference in the rankings released Dec. 20. The Dawgs are No. 1 in per game averages for scoring offense (84.3), rebounds (41.0), rebound margin (+10.6), turnover margin (+3.7) and offensive rebounds (16.2). In addition, they are second in scoring margin (+13.9), free throw percentage (73.4%), 3-point fi eld goal defense (26.6%) and steals (8.7). Huskies In The National Ranks According to ESPN.com s stats, through Saturday s action, Quincy Pondexter is 15th nationally in scoring average (21.6 ppg) and Washington is 11th nationally averaging 84.3 points per game and 26th in rebounds (41.0). Quincy s Chance To Dance Quincy Pondexter will make his stage debut on Wednesday, Dec. 23 in the 7:30 pm showing of the Nutcracker put on annually by the Pacifi c Northwest Ballet. Pondexter will play the role of Grandfather in the party scene during Act I. For the role, Pondexter will undergo a make up process that will age him 40 years. He was one rebound short in the season-opener vs. Wright State of having a double-double in each of the fi rst four games and fi ve-straight if you go back to the Huskies NCAA Tournament game vs. Purdue in which Pondexter had 20 pts and 10 rebounds. Over the fi nal 14 games of the season, he came on like a gang buster to help lead the Huskies to their Pac-10 title and the NCAA Tournament second round. He led the Huskies in scoring over that span of games with 15.4 points per game, including six games with 20 points or more. He also averaged 6.6 rebounds and shot 54.5% (85-156) from the fi eld and 82% (45-55) from the free throw line. In the two NCAA Tournament games, he averaged 21.5 ppg and 9.0 rpg. If this sounds familiar, it should. As a sophomore he concluded the season by averaging 15.2 ppg, 6.4 rpg and shot 52% from the fi eld over the fi nal fi ve games. Closing In On 1,600 The Huskies are 3 wins shy of 1,600 in their 107- year history. UW is trying to to become the 19th team in NCAA Division I history to reach the 1,600- win plateau. U-DUB In Poll Position Washington is 19th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll and 22th in the Associated Press poll, gaining some ground in each of the rankings. The AP ranking of 12th they acheived on Nov. 30 was the highest the Huskies have been since March 9, 2006 when they entered the Pac-10 Tournament with the same ranking. The last time Washington entered December ranked as high as 12th in the AP poll was 1985 when they were 8th. The Huskies started the season ranked 14th by the AP, the highest they started the season since 1985, when they began the season ranked 8th in the fi rst AP Poll. The highest ranking the Huskies achieved in was on March 9, when they were 13th in the AP poll and 10th in the ESPN/Coaches poll. Washington was also chosen by the Pac-10 media to fi nish second in the conference and garnered seven fi rst-place votes. Besides the two major polls, college basketball publications and websites rank the Huskies among their Top 25 including: FoxSports.com s Jeff Goodman (9th), CBSSports.com s Gary Parrish (12th), The Sporting News (13th), ESPN s Andy Katz (14th), Rivals.com (15th), Lindy s (16th), Athlon Sports (17th) and Blue Ribbon College Basketball (23rd). Pondexter averaged 25.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 blocks and 3.0 steals as UW split their games against Texas Tech and Cal State Northridge. In Washington s overtime loss to the Red Raiders, Pondexter scored a careerhigh 31 points, shooting 10-of-17 from the fi eld and 11-of-13 from the free throw line. He is rated as the No. 25 power forward in the nation by Scout.com and the No. 44 small forward by ESPN.com. Simmons was also honorable mention in the Long Beach Press Telegram s Best in the West poll. Athletes In Action Classic Rehashed Washington won the Athletes In Action Classic title with victories over three teams that all won 20 games the previous season. They beat Wright State 74-69, Belmont and Portland State Isaiah Thomas and Quincy Pondexter shared tournament MVP honors while Matthew Bryan-Amaning (MBA) also earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Thomas led all scorers with 24.7 ppg over three days, but Pondexter wasn t far behind at 22 ppg and 11.0 rpg. Thomas scored a career-high 30 in leading UW past Wright State. Pondexter, Thomas and Bryan-Amaning each scored 25, 23, and 23 respectively to beat Belmont. Pondexter established a new career high with 29 against Portland State, while Thomas added 21. Pondexter had double-doubles against Belmont and Portland State, plus he shot 63.9% (23-36) from the fi eld and 95.2% (20-21) from the free throw line (including 20 straight to start the season). Thomas hit 10-of-19 three-point fi eld goals and was 22-of-27 (81.5%) from the line. MBA averaged 11.3 ppg, 5.7 rpg and 2.7 bpg. Free Throw Rarities Isaiah Thomas was 14-of-18 from the free throw line against Wright State on Nov. 13. Both total number of makes and attempts had not been reached by a Husky in over a decade. Todd MacCulloch attempted 20 free throws on Feb. 13, 1999 at Oregon (made 12) and early in that season he made 14 out of 18 vs. UNC Wilmington on Nov. 6, Coincidentally, the UNC-Wilmington contest was the season-opener for the Huskies. Unlike Thomas, MacCulloch only scored 20 points on the night (3-of-6 from the fi eld), while I.T. scored a career-high 30. The next night Quincy Pondexter was a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe against Belmont. The record for most makes in a game without a miss is 14 by Bill Hanson in 1961, but Pondexter s total makes without a miss equals the eighth best in team history. The last Husky to make more without a miss was Curtis Allen, who was a perfect 12-of-12 in Sense Washington s 56 point victory (111-55) over Portland State on Nov. 15 was a rarity on many fronts. In the modern era of Husky basketball (since 1950), it is just the sixth time in team history they have beat an opponent by 50 or more points and was the fi fth-largest margin of victory in that era. The last time the Huskies beat an opponent by more than 50 was on Nov. 13, 2005 when the routed Morgan State by 67 points, The result is even more surprising when you consider that the Huskies only beat the Vikings by one point, in Experience Counts Quincy Pondexter entered the season third among active Pac-10 players in most career games played. Pondexter has played in 105 games at Washington and trails UCLA s Michael Roll and USC s Dwight Lewis. In terms of career minutes played, Pondexter entered the season ranked seventh with 2,553 minutes. Oregon s Tajuan Porter led the conference with 3,177. Connect(icut) The Dots First-year assistant coach Raphael Chillious was head coach at high school basketball powerhouse South Kent in Connecticut before joining the Husky staff (he worked for Nike last year). While at South Kent, he coached current Huskies Isaiah Thomas and Matthew Bryan-Amaning. Chillious coached nearly 40 players that advanced their careers and NCAA Division I schools and even coached three that are currently playing in the NBA - Josh Boone (New Jersey Nets), Dorrell Wright (Miami Heat) and Andray Blatche (Washington Wizards). Huskies To Play in Maui in 2010 Washington will be among the eight-team field at EA SPORTS Maui Invitational in The UW will face a strong fi eld that includes Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Virginia, Wichita State and host Chaminade University of Honolulu. The 2010 event will mark the 27th edition of the nation s premier early-season college basketball tournament. Freshman Sensation Part Deux? It looks like the Huskies will have three freshmen fi ghting for the chance to keep the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year award in Seattle for another season. Isaiah Thomas earned that distinction last season after leading all Pac-10 newcomers with 15.5 ppg and helping the Huskies to their fi rst outright conference championship since The trio of Huskies who have a shot at retaining the award for the Huskies are Abdul Gaddy, Clarence Trent and redshirt freshman Tyreese Breshers. Gaddy entered the season as perhaps the most decorated point guard in team history. He was a McDonald s All-American and is ranked by many services as the prohibitive favorite as Pac-10 s best newcomer. Don t sleep on Trent or Breshers, as each will be asked to contribute a lot this season for the UW.

6 Huskies Shake The Bug-A-Boo The Huskies had trouble fielding enough players to hold a full-squad scrimmage the fi rst week of practice after the flu bug made its rounds in the Husky lockeroom. Of the 12 players on the roster, six missed at least one practice with the fl u. Add in Justin Holiday, who has been limited due to off-season hernia surgery, and the team had several practices where they could not go five-on-fi ve. The Huskies attempted to eliminate any flu relapses by getting shots. They also tried to alleviate the chances of being undermanned again by adding 6-foot-9 walk on Brendan Sherrer to the roster. Midnight Madness Comes To Montlake Washington was selected as one-of-nine sites to host ESPNU s Midnight Madness held on Friday, Oct. 17. The Huskies held a slam dunk contest, which was won by sophomore Isaiah Thomas, who jumped over Matthew Bryan-Amaning on his fi nal dunk. Freshman C.J. Wilcox showed off his shooting skills and won the three-point contest. The event was wrapped up with a short scrimmage that Elston Turner led with 10 points. Former Huskies In The NBA At least four former Washington players continue to ply their trade in the NBA. Brandon Roy is in his fourth year with the Portland Trailblazers. The 2006 NBA Rookie of the Year, he averaged 18.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game in his fi rst three seasons in the league. He is just the second player this decade to win Rookie of the Year and then be named to the All-Star team the following two seasons. The other player...lebron James. Nate Robinson enters his fi fth season with the New York Knicks. He has averaged around 12 points per game over his career and scored a best 17.2 ppg in He scored a career-high 45 points against Portland last March and was the 2009 and 2006 NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion. Spencer Hawes enters his third year as a member of the Sacramento Kings. He averaged 11.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game during his second season. Jon Brockman joins Hawes on the Kings roster in He was drafted in the second round by the Portland Trail Blazers before being traded to Sacramento on draft night. He comes off the bench for the Kings and grabbed 10 rebounds in his second game as a pro. The Season That Is The University of Washington men s basketball team is attempting to repeat as outright conference champions for the fi rst time since they rattled off three-straight in 1951, 1952 and 1953 when they played in the Pacific Coast Conference. The Huskies shared fi rst place in the Pac-10 Conference in 1984 and The Huskies return 61 percent of their scoring and 64 percent of their rebounding. Three starter are back for the Huskies, including reigning Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Isaiah Thomas and senior Quincy Pondexter the only returnees that averaged double-fi gure scoring last season. Darnell Gant started 34 games as a redshirt freshman and can contribute tough defense down low. Venoy Overton is a fan favorite for his tough defense and high-energy and has started 27 games in his twoyear career. Junior Matthew Bryan-Amaning is the Huskies tallest player at 6-foot-9 and ranked 5th in the Pac-10 with 1.0 block per game. Junior Justin Holiday played in all 35 games as a sophomore and supplied shutdown defense and timely offense. Sophomore Elston Turner is capable of being the Huskies top outside threat and classmate Scott Suggs can help from both the perimeter and slashing to the hoop. Tyreese Breshers had to redshirt due to leg injuries and will provide the physicality that Jon Brockman supplied. The Huskies welcome three new freshmen, headlined by McDonald s All- American point guard Abdul Gaddy. C.J. Wilcox might be the Dawgs top shooter, but he will redshirt this season to develop. Forward Clarence Trent is high-fl ying and energetic. The Season That Was In , the University of Washington men s basketball team (26-9, 14-4 Pac-10) won its fi rst outright conference title since Washington was a four-seed in the NCAA Tournament and lost in the second round to Purdue after beating Mississippi State in the fi rst round. The season started with the Huskies jumping out to a 11-3 record before conference action, including losses to Kansas and Florida and wins over eventual NCAA Tournament teams Cleveland State, Oklahoma State, Portland State and Morgan State. Washington won each of its fi nal seven games of the non-conference schedule by an average of 20.3 points. The Huskies opened conference play with wins at Washington State and at home against Stanford before dropping a heartbreaking triple overtime decision to Cal. UW then rebounded with a pair of road wins at Oregon and Oregon State, giving the school a 3-0 road record to open league play for the third time in school history. UW swept USC and UCLA for the fourth time in the last fi ve seasons to move to 6-1 in league play. The next two weekends, Washington split on the road - dropping Thursday games at Arizona and Cal then winning getaway games at Arizona State and Stanford. The UW completed a regular-season sweep of its Oregon rivals then split at UCLA (loss) and USC (win). Washington completed a regularseason sweep of Arizona State with an overtime win, then clinched at least a share of the Pac-10 regular-season title with a win over Arizona. Washington defeated Seattle University before defeating WSU to end the regular season. The UW defeated Stanford in the quarterfi nals of the Pac-10 Tournament before a gritty 21-point comeback fell just short against Arizona State in the semifi nals. Washington was rewarded for its historic season with a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament -- the highest among the Pac-10 s six teams. Lorenzo Romar was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Isaiah Thomas the freshman of the year, Justin Dentmon the league s most improved player, while Jon Brockman and Dentmon were fi rst team All-Pac-10 and Thomas second team.
