Edean Ihlanfeldt is the woman responsible for launching the women s golf team at Washington, and she never took a dime for the job she loved so much during her coaching career. When Washington expanded its athletic lineup to include women s sports, Kit Green hired Ihlanfeldt, one of the area s top players, to coach the Huskies. Armed with an envelope of names and addresses of women who signed up to play, she started the program in 1974 before retiring seven years later in 1981 at the age of 50. During her seven-year coaching career, Ihlanfeldt never accepted payment for her coaching duties. Instead, she donated her salary back for scholarships. Three of Ihlanfeldt s teams and five individuals qualified for the AIAW championships. During her tenure, Washington was the only Northwest team to qualify for the nationals. Ihlanfeldt was no stranger to championship golf. Her list of victories included five PNGA titles, six Montana State championships, three Washington State titles, four Seattle City championships, the Trans-Mississippi title and the Canadian Open Championship. She was the only player to win the Seattle City, Washington and PNGA tournaments in the same year. The Washington women s golf program named its fall golf invitational in her honor. It was the only bright spot for the Huskies who faded during Sunday s final round, dropping back five spots on the leaderboard for an 11th-place finish. Washington finished the three-day, 54- hole affair at 894. Top-ranked Duke ran away with the team title, shooting 18-under 834 to compile a 27-shot victory over secondplace UCLA. The Huskies shot 21-over 305 during Sunday s final round after posting scores of 296 and 293 during the first two days of play. Mackenzie s score marked the third consecutive season she has shot 210 at the Stanford Intercollegiate. It ties her other two marks as the second best tournament score in UW history. Currently ranked the No. 1 collegiate player in the nation, Mackenzie has also turned in her all-time single-round scores at Stanford. She posted a 67 there at the 2004 NCAA West Regional and repeated that effort at last fall s invitational. Mackenzie s finish was her 19th top-10 effort during her career. She now stands second on UW s all-time record list and needs one more top-10 showing to tie former Husky All-American Kelli Kamimura for the lead on that list. Washington s other competitors were led by Courtney McCracken s 47th-place finish at 13-over 226. Sung Ea Lee was 53rd at 228, Amber Prange was 65th at 230 and Amy Wang was 100th at 260.
