2 REVIEW COACHES PLAYERS 2007 SEASON COURSES HISTORY RECORDS 2007 SEASON The Washington women s golf team is poised to start the 2007 season right where it left off last spring continuing to set new standards for a program on the rise. Led by the best player to ever don purple and gold for Husky women s golf Paige Mackenzie - Washington either set or matched school records with its regional and NCAA finishes last season. The Huskies set a UW best with a third-place finish at NCAA Regionals, before matching school best with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The fuel behind the Huskies fire was the aforementioned Mackenzie, who capped her senior season in 2006 by winning both the Pac- 10 and NCAA Regional individual titles before breaking her own school record with an eighth place finish at nationals. While the Huskies certainly have the momentum set in motion by last year s success, the challenge ahead will be moving on without Mackenzie and the team s other graduated senior and All-American in her own right, Sung Ea Lee. At times this year I m still looking around for Paige and Sung, 24th year head coach Mary Lou Mulflur said. It s different. I think we d all be lying if we said it wasn t. But at the same time, I think it s been a growth opportunity for this team. Waiting in the wings to take over the allimportant leadership role is senior Amber Prange. Dubbed by Mulflur as one of the most consistent performers she s had, Prange is no stranger to coming through in big tournaments having played behind Mackenzie for three years and placing among the team s top-two finishers at eight events last year, including the Pac-10 Championships and NCAA Regionals. Amber has definitely stepped into that leadership role for us, Mulflur said. She has done a great job so far this year with that. I think more so this spring people will be relying on her leadership. That s a lot of pressure, but I know Amber can handle that. Joining Prange on the 2007 roster are seniors Ashley Bickerton and Amy Wang, junior Kim Shin, redshirt freshman Molly Boyle, and true freshmen Molly Aronsson and Christina Yoon. Even though there are three seniors on the roster, the team is still considered young with Shin being the only other returner besides Prange who was a regular in last year s lineup. That inexperience was tested during the fall season and Mulflur tried a few different lineups in the four tournaments to see how the players adjusted. Although the team didn t have a strong fall showing, it allowed for these Huskies to see more time on the links and prepare for the spring. I would expect us to play much better this spring, Mulflur said. I would be shocked if we don t play markedly better. Our goal is to get better every day with what we do. All you can do is focus on yourself and getting yourself better, being better prepared. We re working hard in the weight room getting more fit. It s all about us getting better, gaining confidence and feeling like we ve got some momentum going into February when we go down to Arizona. High on the list of team goals for the Huskies is to win a Pac-10 title. A first conference crown would be especially fitting in 2007 since Washington will play host to the event at Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle just minutes from the UW campus. We d love to win our conference championship, Mulflur said. We are hosting this year and you only get to do that once every Season Outlook 10 years. Very few players in their careers get to play their conference championships at home. With winning championships certainly on the mind of Mulflur and the Huskies, the UW head coach is aware that she still has a very young team this season. In the back of your mind it s all about winning championships and that s not going to change, Mulflur said. At the same time there is also that part of me that has to be realistic. But the thing about this group is they work really hard and they want to win. They are very competitive so I don t have to figure out ways to get them fired up to play and that s very nice for a coach not to worry about that piece of the puzzle. Two of the team s strengths this year will be team chemistry and work ethic, as noted by Mulflur. There is a real camaraderie with this team and a competitiveness, but in a real healthy way, she said. They are okay with getting beat, but boy you better watch out the next day because they are going to come back and try to beat you. Among those top competitors will be Prange, a two-time All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection who enters her senior season with seven Top-10 finishes in her UW career. 3 Season Outlook 2007 SEASON 2007 Washington Roster Player Class Ht. Exp. Hometown High School Molly Aronsson Freshman 5-7 HS Shelburne, Vt. Rice Memorial Ashley Bickerton Senior 5-9 3V Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Ashbury Prep Molly Boyle Rs-Freshman 5-3 RS Portland, Ore. Jesuit Amber Prange Senior 5-6 3V Noblesville, Ind. Noblesville Kim Shin Junior 5-5 2V Mountlake Terrace, Wash. Shorewood Amy Wang Senior 5-4 3V Kirkland, Wash. Lake Washington Christina Yoon Freshman 5-4 HS Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada Richview C.I. Head Coach: Mary Lou Mulflur, 24th year (Washington 80) Assistant Coach: Joe Thiel, 2nd year finished behind only Mackenzie last year with a stroke average. Amber has been steady, steady, steady, Mulflur said of her top player. Her score always counts and that s what you need. When she plays she gives you a number that you can work with, so that s always a good thing. Although it is too early for Mulflur to set a lineup yet for the spring season, Shin figures to be a regular, finishing the fall season behind Prange with a stroke average playing in all four tournaments. Shin is a two-time competitor at Pac-10s, regionals and NCAAs and was an All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection as a freshman. I m confident that she will come in and have a good a spring for us, Mulflur said. The other two returners are seniors Bickerton and Wang. Bickerton is a three-year letterwinner but didn t see any action in the fall. After a solid freshman season in which she competed in nine tournaments including NCAAs, Bickerton has Senior Amber Prange played sparingly. Wang is another three-year letterwinner and set a career-best with a fourthplace finish at the Nittany Lion Invitational in the fall. Ashley struggled this year a little bit playing wise, Mulflur said. But she has a heart of gold. Ashley is really a dynamic person and brings a care-free attitude in a positive way to the team. Amy is probably pound for pound one of the best players in the country and she s just a little tiny thing, but she s tough and she doesn t like to lose. Not a newcomer to the team, but a newcomer to collegiate golf is redshirt freshman Boyle. She made her UW debut in the fall, playing in all four tournaments. Boyle tied for 26th at the Ihlanfeldt Invitational in her first career event and shot a season-best 15-over 231 at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. Molly is probably one of the most pleasant outcomes we ve had, Mulflur said. Here is someone who wasn t highly recruited and she walked on here, knowing what she was getting into as far as having to make her own way. It has been impressive to watch her growth as a player and a person. Aronsson and Yoon, the true freshmen, round out the Husky roster. Both bring outstanding credentials to Seattle and both notched top-10 finishes in their debuts in the fall at the Nittany Lion Invitational. Aronsson tied for sixth and Yoon tied for ninth. Aronsson hails from Shelburne, Vt., and attended Rice Memorial High School. She was just a one-year letterwinner in high school golf, but won the state championship that season. Aronsson also played soccer, tennis and ice hockey before devoting all her time to golf at the collegiate level. Molly played hockey for years and she has a hockey player s mentality which I love, Mulflur said. She is tough mentally and is as honest about herself as probably any player that I ve ever had. She is not afraid of hard work, she just wants to play and wants to win. Yoon comes to Seattle from Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada and was the runner-up at the 2006 Ontario Junior Championship. Yoon battled mono during the end of the fall quarter so it may take her some time to get back to full strength, but Mulflur is excited about her potential. Christina has a ton of talent, she said. It took her a little longer to get into the lineup this fall, but I wanted to see what she would do and what she had in her. She s very hard on herself and she s really very competitive, and wants to do well. With leadership, chemistry and work ethic in place, the 2007 Huskies are anxious for their season debut at the end of February. Although this Washington team might be young, it still has the talent and depth ready to carry on the precedence of success established by Husky squads before them. And they just might have a few new trophies to add to Washington s ever growing collection when it is all said and done. Junior Kim Shin

13 COACHES Head Coach Mary Lou Mulflur In the history of the Husky women s golf team, two individuals stand out as the cornerstones for the program. The first is Edean Ihlanfeldt, the namesake of the Huskies annual fall tournament. She was Washington s first coach. So dedicated to seeing women have an opportunity to compete on the intercollegiate level, Ihlanfeldt never accepted a paycheck for her efforts. She funneled her salary back into the program. The second is current head coach Mary Lou Mulflur, who is in her 24th season directing the Huskies. A player for Ihlanfeldt, Mulflur s passion and commitment to Husky golf makes her former mentor proud. Mulflur s dedication, teaching skills and fundraising abilities have allowed her to build the Husky program into one of the nation s most competitive teams on an annual basis. Last season, the Huskies matched a school-record with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, its second Top-10 finish in three years and third overall. Senior Paige Mackenzie led the way, winning Washington s first individual Pac-10 title and the second-ever NCAA West Regional title. Mackenzie also notched her second-straight Top-10 NCAA finish with an eighth-place standing. Mackenzie culminated her career with her second-straight All-America honor. In 2005 the Huskies placed 14th at the NCAA Championships, with Mackenzie recording Washington s 24th Season first ever top 10 NCAA finish. She placed 10th and received honorable mention All-America honors after the season. The 2005 season was the 13th consecutive year the Huskies have advanced to the NCAA Regional Championships. Washington has competed at the Regionals every year since its inception in In 2004 Washington experienced one of its greatest campaigns, finishing sixth at the NCAA Championships. It was the highest finish ever by a UW team at the NCAAs. The Huskies were led by Mackenzie, who placed 11th at the national championships and was named a second-team All-American. Classmate Sung Ea Lee was named an honorable mention All-American. In Mulflur s tenure at Washington, six Huskies have earned All-America honors a total of 10 times. In 2001, Mulflur led Washington to a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. At the time, it was the best showing by a Husky team at the national championships. UW s 2002 NCAA Championships appearance was the fifth by the Huskies over a stretch of eight years. That season the Huskies won the Oregon Duck Invitational and the Peg Barnard California Collegiate and tied for fifth at the Pac-10 Championships. Mulflur s players have also achieved in the classroom. Mackenzie was named to the National Golf Coaches Association s All-Scholar Team in each of the last three seasons. During Mulflur s tenure, 12 UW golfers have Longest tenure of any current Husky coach in any sport Played in the 1979 and 1980 U.S. Open 1988 Pac-10 Coach of the Year 1999 Pac-10 Coach of the Year One of the first female studentathletes to receive an athletic scholarship from Washington Coached eight players who have earned All-Pac-10 honors a total of 15 times Coached six players who have earned NGCA All-American honors a total of 10 times Had 12 players earn NGCA All- Scholar Athlete honors 23 times Coached UW to eight NCAA Championship appearances Coached current California head coach Nancy Kessler-McDaniel and current assistant coaches Kelli Kamimura (Pepperdine) and Kari Sampson (Washington State) earned the distinction on 23 occasions. Twice during Mulflur s career she has been named the Pac-10 Conference s Coach of the Year. The first time she received the honor was in She picked up the award for the second time in In 1995, Mulflur directed the Huskies to their first team NCAA Finals appearance on the strength of a sixthplace finish in the NCAA West Regional. In 1988, the UW had its best Pac-10 finish ever, placing third in the conference tournament. That year brought Mulflur her first Pac-10 Coach of the Year award. Mulflur has coached several Husky players who have gone on to play professionally or coach. Nancy Kessler- McDaniel, who played at UW from 1984 to 1988, went on to play professionally and is now the head coach at California. Former Husky All-American Kelli Kamimura is an assistant coach at Pepperdine and Kari (Martin) Sampson is an assistant at Washington State. Mulflur, regarded as one of the most successful golfers to come out of the UW, came to Washington in 1976 and was one of the first female athletes to receive a scholarship at Washington. The Portland, Ore., native went on to earn four letters as a Husky. During her collegiate career Mulflur won three regularseason tournaments, including the inaugural Ihlanfeldt Invitational in To date, Kamimura is the only Husky golfer with more career wins than Mulflur. While attending Grant High School, Mulflur won state high school titles in 1974 and She also won the 1975 Oregon junior championship. Mulflur won Southern Oregon titles in 1980, 1982, 1995 and 1997 as well as the Oregon Coast Invitational in 1979, 1982, and Mulflur has competed in five United States Golf Association events The U.S. Open in 1979 and 1980 and the U.S. Amateur in 1979, 1980 and In addition she competed in four National Collegiate Championships. Edean Ihlanfeldt is the woman responsible for launching the women s golf team at Washington, and she never took a dime for the job she loved so much during her coaching career. When Washington expanded its athletic lineup to include women s sports, Kit Green hired Ihlanfeldt, one of the area s top players, to coach the Huskies. Armed with an envelope of names and addresses of women who signed up to play, she started the program in 1974 before retiring seven years later in 1981 at the age of 50. During her seven-year coaching career, Ihlanfeldt never accepted payment for her coaching duties. Instead, she donated her salary back for scholarships. Three of Ihlanfeldt s teams and five individuals qualified for the AIAW championships. During her tenure, Washington was the only Northwest team to qualify for the nationals. Ihlanfeldt was no stranger to championship golf. Her list of victories included five PNGA titles, six Montana State championships, three Washington State titles, four Seattle City championships, the Trans-Mississippi title and the Canadian Open Championship. She was the only player to win the Seattle City, Washington and PNGA tournaments in the same year. The Washington women s golf program named its fall golf invitational in her honor. Arizona State s top finisher was Alissa Kuczka who as fourth at 3-over 219. Mackenzie, who was ranked by Golfweek as the nation s second best player behind Duke s Anna Grzebien, opened the tournament with a 68 to grab the first round lead but fell back on the leaderboard after posting a 7-over 79 during the second round. Mackenzie s finish marked the 18th time in her career she has placed in the top 10. Husky junior Amber Prange tied for seventh at 8-over 224 after shooting 74 during the final round. Sophomore Courtney McCracken tied for 20th at 236 with a final round 79. Sophomore Kim Shin was 25th at 239 including an 81 during the final 18 holes and Sung Ea Lee was 32nd at 249, including an 80 in the final round. Prange s finish was her fifth top-10 showing and bettered any outing she had last year. She was ninth twice, including the Pac-10 Championships. Pepperdine overcame a six-shot lead by Arizona State to win its first Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational held at Sahalee Country Club. The second-ranked Waves took advantage of Carolina Llano s final round 4-under 68 to topple the ninth-ranked Sun Devils by a single stroke. Pepperdine won the 54-hole tournament with a 27-over score of 891, including a 2-over 290 during the final round. Arizona State, which shot 9-over 297 during the final day of competition, did not go away empty handed. Sun Devil freshman Jennifer Osborn posted a final-round 73 to take medalist honors by two shots at 1-under 215. Southern California s Irene Cho fired a tournament best 67 to make the stroke play race interesting. She was the runner-up at 217. Pepperdine s victory was the first ever by the Waves in the 24-year history of the Ihlanfeldt Invitational. Osborn s victory marked the first time a Sun Devil had finished first at the event. Thanks to Cho s hot play, USC rallied for a third-place finish at 909. UNLV was fifth at 915 and Arizona was fifth at 918. Washington slipped back to a ninth-place tie with Oregon after shooting 313 during the final round. The eighth-ranked Huskies three-day total was 66-over 930. Washington played the event without senior All-American Paige Mackenzie who was competing in The Spirit International Amateur Championships in Houston. Washington was led by junior Courtney McCracken who tied for 12th at 10-over 226. She shot 72 during the final day, the best single-round score of any Husky. UW s Sung Ea Lee was 33rd at 234 while Amber Prange placed 43rd at 236. Amy Wang was 45th at 237 and Kim Shin shot 243 to finish 56th. Ashley Bickerton, competing as an individual, was 46th at 238. Washington senior Paige Mackenzie has always enjoyed playing the Stanford Golf Course. Mackenzie equaled her career best tournament score, shooting 3-under 210 to place fourth at the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate. It was the only bright spot for the Huskies who faded during Sunday s final round, dropping back five spots on the leaderboard for an 11th-place finish. Washington finished the threeday, 54-hole affair at 894. Top-ranked Duke ran away with the team title, shooting 18-under 834 to compile a 27-shot victory over second-place UCLA. The Huskies shot 21-over 305 during Sunday s final round after posting scores of 296 and 293 during the first two days of play. Mackenzie s score marked the third consecutive season she has shot 210 at the Stanford Intercollegiate. It ties her other two marks as the second best tournament score in UW history. Mackenzie has also turned in her all-time single-round scores at Stanford. She posted a 67 there at the 2004 NCAA West Regional and repeated that effort at last fall s invitational. Mackenzie s finish was her 19th top-10 effort during her career. She now stands second on UW s all-time record list and needs one more top-10 showing to tie former Husky All- American Kelli Kamimura for the lead on that list. Washington s other competitors were led by Courtney McCracken s 47th-place finish at 13-over 226. Sung Ea Lee was 53rd at 228, Amber Prange was 65th at 230 and Amy Wang was 100th at 260. 32 REVIEW COACHES PLAYERS 2007 SEASON 32 HISTORY Dodie Mazzuca Heralded as the best player in Washington women s golf, Dodie Mazzuca was the first Husky to receive first-team All-America honors and compete in three different NCAA Championships. Mazzuca finished her career owning virtually every Washington women s golf record. The 65 she shot in the third round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational as a senior was not only a school record but was also the lowest score by a women s golfer in the country for the season. In addition to winning the Ihlanfeldt Invitational, Mazzuca claimed two other medals during the season, including a win at the NCAA West Regional to help the Huskies advance to their second NCAA Championships as a team. Mazzuca became the first Husky to lead the team in stroke average for four consecutive seasons, finishing with a school record 75.1 as a senior. Mazzuca was recognized as a first-team All-Pac-10 player as a senior after being named to the second team as a junior. Cal Coach Gets Start at UW Current California head coach Nancy McDaniel (Kessler) was a four-year letterwinner at Washington from She played 109 career rounds for the Dawgs, averaging 79.3 strokes while winning two tournaments and finishing in the top-10 nine times. As a junior, Kessler played in the No. 1 position, again competing in all of Washington s competitive rounds while averaging 79.2 strokes. She had two top-10 finishes, including a second place at the Utah-Dixie Classic where she shot a four-over 223. The season was Kessler s most productive as she won two tournaments including UW s own Edean Ihlanfeldt. Kessler also won the BYU Invitational, where she shot an opening-round 69, her career low. For the year, Kessler finished in the top 10 in seven of 10 events. Greggain Finishes 44th at 2004 U.S. Open Former Washington women s golfer Jennifer (Stapleton) Greggain shot 77 during the final round of the 2004 U.S. Open at The Orchards to place 44th overall. Greggain lettered at Washington from She earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors as a senior. Husky Golf Historical EXPERIENCE COURSES HISTORY RECORDS Hosting the 2002 NCAA Championships For the first time in the program s history, Washington was the host institution for the NCAA Championships in The tournament was staged at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn. Duke won the championship behind the play of medalist Virada Nirapathpongporn who shot 9-under 279. The 2006 Husky women matched a school record finish by placing sixth at the NCAA Championships hosted by Ohio State. Mackenzie capped her Husky tenure with the best postseason run in school history last spring. She won both the 2006 Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional individual titles before going on to place eighth at the NCAA Championships - the best NCAA individual finish in UW history. It was quite a fitting end for Mackenzie who left the program as a three-time NGCA All-American, a threetime first-team All-Pac-10 selection, a three-time NGCA All-Scholar Athlete and a four-time Pac-10 All-Academic honoree. She played 139 career rounds, the most in UW history and ranks first on the all-time list for top-10 finishes with 22. 33 Washington National Golf Club When Washington National Golf Club opened in August of 2000, it became the new home for the Husky Golf team. Thanks to a sponsorship agreement between Washington National and the University, the course features a distinctive Husky brand, from the golf carts, to flag sticks, to its company logo. University faculty, staff and students are entitled to special discounted fees at Washington National. Five sets of tees (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Husky) stretch the course from 5,117 yards to 7,304 yards. The course was selected for the site of the 2002 NCAA Division I Women s Golf Championships and the 2003 NCAA Division I Men s Golf Regionals, and hosted the 2006 Division I Women s Regionals last spring. The Husky Golf Practice Facility, located on the back of the driving range at Washington National, is a major reason for the success of Washington s men s and women s golf programs. The facility is dedicated exclusively for the use of the two teams, allowing them to practice independently and participate in team activities that aren t possible at other facilities. This allows the Husky coaches to create appropriate playing The 1st Tee COURSES conditions in preparation for upcoming events and allows them to work on specific skills. The range tee at the practice facility is 70 yards wide and 35 yards deep. There are numerous target greens, all of which are shaped like real greens and seeded with the same bent grass as the greens on the course. With the size of the tee and the location of these greens the teams can practice at any yardage with their wedges. The facility also features two large greens used for putting, chipping, and bunker play. They are well-conditioned and excellent for practicing the short game. In case of an occasional rain, the facility has a movable cover that up to five golfers can practice under. This allows the Huskies to hit off of real grass and be dry no matter what the weather. When the weather is nice, Husky golfers enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Rainier. Truly a one-of-a kind resource, the Husky Golf Practice Facility at Washington National provides Husky golfers with the preparation they need to succeed at the highest levels of collegiate golf.
