2 2007 SEASON Season Outlook REVIEW COACHES PLAYERS 2007 SEASON HISTORY RECORDS Coming off the two best postseason performances in program history, the Washington men s golf team has a lot to look forward to in If last year s showing at the NCAA Championships is any indication, the Huskies are only one round away from their ultimate goal winning a national title. After finishing second at the Pac-10 Championships and third at the West Regional last year, Washington led the entire field at the 2006 NCAA Championships for three rounds before falling to a ninth place finish when it was all said and done. For sixth-year head coach Matt Thurmond, that ninth place finish had more significance than a school-record third-place finish in 2005 a year that also saw Washington win the Pac- 10 title and place third at regionals. That was quite a run over the last two years so it felt like the last year in many ways was a culmination of two years of work, Thurmond said. To tee it up in the final round of the NCAA Championship with a three-shot lead was probably the highlight of all of our careers. It didn t end the way we wanted to, but we still had a great time doing it. Our ninth place finish, despite the poor performance the last day, I wouldn t trade it for the third place finish when we didn t have a chance to win. The fact is, for three rounds we dominated the NCAA Championships. It was a very special season for a special group who came together at the end of the year. The good news for Thurmond is that three key members of last year s special group are back in 2007 seniors Alex Prugh and Erik Olson, and junior Zach Bixler. The bad news is the loss of 2005 NCAA champion James Lepp the leader of the Husky contingent the last two years to graduation. But back to some good news Washington welcomes five extremely talented newcomers that give Thurmond more depth to work with than he s had in some time. It s an exciting team because there is so much more talent, and so much more depth than we ve had the last couple years, Thurmond said. The last couple years we were really struggling to find a guy to fill out our lineup. But this year, we re 10 strong. Experience is another key factor for this 2007 squad with Prugh, Olson and Bixler having had the experience of being major contributors to the team s success the past two seasons. It all bodes well for high expectations for another shot at the team s ultimate goal - an NCAA title. The thing is, we ve been there and we ve been very successful, Thurmond said. Most of our team knows what it s like and knows what to expect. I wouldn t be at all surprised to have another great postseason this year and have another chance going into the final round of the NCAA Championships. So the key ingredients are there - experience, talent and depth and Thurmond can t wait to get his new team on the links this spring. In addition to Prugh, Olson and Bixler, the 2007 roster features sophomore returners Kellen Eakin and John Wise, along with sophomore transfer Chris Killmer who was a standout freshman at Cal State Bakersfield last season. The four freshmen are Joel Dahmen, Chris Evans, Nick Taylor and Darren Wallace. Looking to lead the way will be returning senior All-Americans Prugh and Olson. Prugh is a two-time PING All-American and a two-time All-Pac-10 selection including a first-team all-conference nod in Prugh was the Huskies top finisher in seven of 12 events last season and his 10 top-10 career finishes rank sixth most in Husky history. His 72.2 stroke average as a junior also ranks fifth on the UW single-season list. Prugh is poised for a stellar senior spring campaign, after leading the Huskies as the top finisher in three of their four fall tournaments. He gained added experience this past summer competing in the British Amateur and the U.S. Amateur, while also being selected to take part in the 2006 Western Refining College All- America Classic and the 2007 U.S. Walker Cup practice squad. Alex has come so far in his four years here, I m just so proud of him the kind of man he s turned out to be and just how seriously he takes his work, Thurmond said. I would hope that all the guys would watch and be like him. Alex is always preparing, he is always ready. He s just a great guy to have on the team. Right there with Prugh will be Olson, a 2004 All-American, two-time All-Pac-10 selection and 2005 Pac-10 medalist. His eight top-10 finishes rank 11th in UW history heading into his senior season. Last year, Olson followed up his winning run with a third-place finish at the 2006 Pac-10 Championships. He also earned some valuable experience over the summer, competing in the 2006 U.S. Amateur and finishing as the runnerup at the 2006 PNGA Men s Amateur. Erik has a beautiful all-around game, Thurmond said. He doesn t really have a weakness. He s the kind of guy that at any given time can step up and win some tournaments for us. The lone junior on the Husky squad is Bixler, who earned honorable mention All-American honors last season. He turned in a strong postseason as a sophomore, finishing third at the 2006 West Regional and 20th at the NCAA Championship. Last summer, Bixler won the 2006 WSGA Men s Amateur and joined Prugh at the 2006 Western Refining College All-America Classic. Zach is more of our emotional leader, Thurmond said. He s such a fierce competitor. When the bell goes off and it s time for Zach to play, he can do some amazing things. He s just a guy you want to go into battle with you. When you need someone to come through for you, Zach s the guy. Rounding out the five returners from last year s squad are sophomores Eakin and Wise. As true freshmen, Eakin played in one varsity event and Wise played in two. This past fall, Eakin played in two varsity tournaments and set a career-high with a fourth-place finish at a junior varsity event the UBC Men s Invitational. Kellen has improved a lot from last season, Thurmond said. I m enjoying watching him mature and gain confidence as a golfer and I think he is close to having a breakthrough. Senior All-American Alex Prugh Wise came out in his season debut to win the Opus NW Husky Invitational, shooting seven-under 209. He also competed in the PING/Golfweek Preview during the 2006 fall season. It was nice to see John win a tournament, and to see the kind of strength he had inside of him. He s hardly played in college tournaments so to hold a lead like he did, extend it and hold up under that kind of pressure just shows the kind of person he is. The Huskies then welcome five newcomers to their fold, beginning with sophomore transfer Killmer. Killmer made a solid collegiate debut at NCAA Division II Cal State Bakersfield last year. He was a third-team All-American and won the Phil Mickelson Freshman of the Year award. Killmer played in two fall tournaments for the Huskies after transferring, tying for 20th at the Opus NW Husky Invitational and tying for 68th at the PING/Golfweek Preview. Four true freshmen also join the team this season, many of whom could make an immediate impact on the Husky squad in Dahmen, a product of Clarkston High School in Clarkson, Wash., showed early promise in the fall playing in four varsity tournaments. He shot rounds of 69 in three of the four tournaments and notched his best finish in his collegiate debut at the Opus NW Husky Invitational, tying for 15th. Evans hails from Shelton High School and Grapeview, Wash., and played in three fall tournaments for the Huskies including two junior varsity events. His best collegiate finish to date was tying for ninth at the UBC Men s Invitational. Evans also won the 2006 West Seattle Amateur and was the runner-up at the 2006 PNGA Men s Public Links Championship. Two Canadian standouts round out the Huskies freshman class with Taylor and Wallace. Both players made their collegiate debuts in four fall tournaments in 2006, and both made their strongest showings at the UBC Invitational. Taylor won the event, shooting 2-over 218 and Wallace was the runner-up, shooting seven-over 223. Taylor carded a 69 in his first collegiate round at the Opus NW Husky Invitational and went on to place 10th in his debut. He came to UW after winning the 2006 Canadian Boys Championship and advancing as far as the quarterfinals in match play at the 2006 Canadian Men s Amateur. Wallace also qualified for match play at the 2006 Canadian Men s Amateur and was the youngest player to ever win the Canadian Amateur in With the roster set and the talent in place, Thurmond believes the team has the intangibles to get back to being in a position to achieve its ultimate goal and see it through to the end. Last year we had the ability to really rise to the occasion, he said. And you always want your team to have that so I hope the team this year and forever more has the ability to bring out their best under the highest pressure. If there s anything I want to improve on, I want us to become a little more consistent. I d love to see us have more in-season success, because last year, had we been in that position a little more often we might have handled that a little better. Going into the spring season with an even more experienced and talented squad than in years past, it would appear as if all the ingredients are in place for yet another historymaking season of Husky men s golf. 14 COACHES REVIEW COACHES PLAYERS 2007 SEASON EXPERIENCE COURSES HISTORY RECORDS 14 Sixth-year Washington men s golf coach Matt Thurmond has built the Husky program into one of the top college programs in the nation. Under his tutelage, Washington has made eight consecutive trips to the NCAA Championships, a streak currently matched by just four other Division I programs - Arizona, Oklahoma State, Georgia and Georgia Tech. But the youthful Thurmond, who became Washington s head coach when he was just 26, wants to do more than just make the NCAAs an annual rite of passage for Husky golf. He believes Washington can challenge for a national title every year. That belief was vindicated in 2005, when Thurmond and his team took Washington golf to new heights. It started at the Pac-10 Championships, where Thurmond s squad made a remarkable comeback. In 10th place and trailing by 20 strokes after the first round, Washington rallied to earn its first Pac-10 title since The comeback was led by Pac-10 medalist Erik Olson, who shot an 8-under 276 to win his first collegiate tournament and become the Huskies first Pac-10 individual champion since Olson and teammate James Lepp were named First Team All-Pac-10 for their efforts, while Thurmond received Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors. After placing third at the NCAA West Regional, the Huskies advanced the NCAA Championships in Owings Mills, Md. There Lepp staged a comeback of his own, rallying from a six-shot deficit with a course-record 7-under 63 to force a playoff with Pepperdine s Michael Putnam. Lepp then sunk a two-foot putt on the third playoff hole to take home NCAA medalist honors. Led by the first team All-American s furious charge, Washington placed third as a team, the best finish in the program s history. But the success of 2005 was not an isolated incident. Since taking over the Husky program, Thurmond has witnessed the most successful stretch run in Washington s history. In 2006, the Huskies followed up their history making 2005 campaign with another strong showing in the postseason. Led by Erik Olson s individual third-place finish, Washington notched a runner-up standing at the Pac-10 Championships the Huskies second-straight Top-two finish at the conference tournament. After a third-place team finish at the NCAA West Regional, the Huskies came one round shy of reaching their ultimate goal. UW led the entire field at the NCAA Championships through the first three rounds, but was unable to hold on through the final 18 holes. A ninth-place team finish was still not a disappointment for Thurmond and his squad when it was all said and done. Three Huskies earned All-America honors at season s end Erik Olson, Alex Head Coach Matt Thurmond 6th Season Prugh and James Lepp. In 2004, the Huskies placed sixth at the NCAA Championships, the second best finish in Husky history. The 2004 postseason was highlighted by Brock Mackenzie earning first-team All-America honors for the second straight year and freshmen Alex Prugh and Erik Olson being named honorable mention All-Americans. Prior to that, Thurmond led the UW to a pair of 11th-place finishes at the NCAAs. In 2002 the Huskies won the program s first NCAA West Regional Championship. Over the past five seasons Thurmond s teams have amassed 11 tournament championship trophies. In the summer of 2005, Lepp won the stroke play portion of the U.S. Amateur by four strokes, shooting a 5-under 135 in the 36-hole event. He also helped Canada win the 2005 Copa de las Americas title and won his fourth-straight British Columbia Amateur Championship. Olson helped the USA to victory at the 2005 U.S. vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championships, while Alex Prugh won the Pacific Coast Amateur at Bandon Dunes, as well as the Washington State Amateur. In 2004, two-time first team All-American Brock Mackenzie qualified for the U.S. Open while Prugh was the first alternate for the event. Mackenzie, who graduated as the most decorated golfer in UW s history, played for the United States team at the Walker Cup in England, winning all three of his matches against competitors from Great Britain. There have been a number of outstanding performances and record-setting achievements under Thurmond. Every Washington individual and team record has been set during his tenure. Some of the highlights include: In 2001, Husky senior Gordy Scutt became the first UW golfer to win back-to-back tournaments, finishing first at both the Vandal Classic and the Husky Invitational. As a junior, Mackenzie shot 12-under 60 at the Oregon Invitational to set NCAA records for net score and score against par. The Huskies shot 816 at the 2005 Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Hawaii to shatter the old school tournament scoring mark and carded a 270 during the second round to tie UW s single-round record, set in 2002 at the Western Intercollegiate. James Lepp turned in a 54-hole score of 198 at the 2005 Waikoloa Intercollegiate to break the school tournament scoring mark. Thurmond was named Washington s head coach in June of 2001 after O.D. Vincent announced he was leaving to pursue a career in professional golf. Thurmond had worked at UW as an assistant coach for one season. Prior to joining the Husky staff, Thurmond worked as an assistant coach for his alma mater, Brigham Young, during the season. That edition of Cougar golf won seven tournament titles and was ranked in the top 10 all season. Thurmond was a four-year letterman on the BYU golf team, from , and was named Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in Following that, he served as a missionary for his church in Venezuela and then returned home to earn recognition as a WAC Scholar- Athlete and Academic All-American in Thurmond graduated from BYU in 1999 with a degree in English. He is married to two-time WAC champion triple jumper, Kathy Sorenson, who also competed for the Cougars. They have a four-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, and a two-year-old daughter Emily. Thurmond is an amateur golfer who enjoys playing in tournaments as well as competing with his team. Thurmond is from Burlington, Wash., where he attended Burlington-Edison High School. 15 COACHES Assistant Coach Jon Reehoorn Former Washington State standout golfer Jon Reehoorn is in his third season as an assistant coach at Washington. During his tenure with UW, the Huskies captured the 2005 Pac-10 Championship and notched back-to-back Top-10 NCAA finishes including a school-record thirdplace standing in Reehoorn has mentored 2005 NCAA individual champion and first-team All-American James Lepp, along with Husky All-Americans Alex Prugh and Erik Olson. Reehoorn joined the Husky program after working at Louisville as a graduate assistant coach while working toward his Athletic Administration degree. While residing in Louisville he also worked as an intern for the Mid-South Conference and the Greater Louisville Sports Commission. As a senior in 2002, Reehoorn was a second-team All-Pac-10 selection, helping Washington State to its only NCAA Regional Championships appearance in the program s history. He was selected to the PING 3rd Season All-Pacific Region team that year as one of the region s top 15 players and was a second-team Pac-10 All-Academic team member. He received one of the Pac-10 Conference s post-graduate scholarships following his senior year at Washington State. Reehoorn completed his Washington State golf career with a school record 12 top-25 finishes in addition to posting a 72.0 scoring average in , the best single-season mark in school history. In addition, Reehoorn ended his career at WSU with a school record 14 and 28 career top-10 and top-25 finishes, respectively. Reehoorn was a walk-on at Washington State and lettered four times. He received honorable mention all-pac-10 notice as a junior. He was a second-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection as a sophomore and received honorable mention honors during his junior season. Minnesota won the tiebreaker between the two teams - counting the number-five player s scores - to claim the championship trophy. Trailing by as much as 15 strokes during the final round, the Huskies got hot on the back nine to close the gap and start the season with a first-place finish. Washington s four scoring players combined to shoot 6-under on the back nine during the final round to help the team post a 1-under 287. That was the lowest single-round score during the 54-hole tournament played at Spring Hill Golf Club. Washington and Minnesota tied for first at 19-over 883 while Purdue and Georgia State both shot 890 to share third place. Erik Olson topped Washington Sunday with a 2-under 70 while Alex Prugh shot 1-under 71. Prugh was the Huskies top finisher, tying for second at even-par 216. Olson was 10th at 3- over 219. Defending NCAA Champion James Lepp shot 221 to tie for 14th. Zach Bixler had a final-round 74 but did not place after being disqualified during the second round for failing to sign his scorecard. Joe Panzeri was 46th at 237. He shot 84 on Sunday. Minnesota s Niall Turner took medalist honors at 1-under 215. He had rounds of 73, 70 and 72. The ninth-ranked Washington men s golf team finished eighth at the PING/Golfweek Fall Preview played at the Crosswater Club in Sunriver, Ore. The tournament featured nine of the top-10 ranked teams in the nation. The Huskies were led by the top-10 finishes of junior Alex Prugh and senior James Lepp. Prugh was fifth overall at 6-under 210 while Lepp tied for ninth at 3-under 213. Prugh carded rounds of 73, 68 and 69 while Lepp shot 70, 70 and 73. Georgia freshman Brian Harmon tied Oklahoma State s Pablo Martin for medalist honors at 9-under 205. Georgia, the defending NCAA Champion, shot a tournament best single-round score of 9-under 277 Wednesday to run away with the team title by 15 strokes. The Bulldogs finished at 17-under 845. Georgia Tech was second at 860. The Huskies shot 876. Prugh s finish marked the second straight tournament he has led the Huskies in scoring. He tied for second at Minnesota s Gopher Invitational to help UW tie for top honors. It was the seventh top-10 outing for both Prugh and Lepp during their Husky careers. Erik Olson posted a 71 in the final round to move up to 32nd at 222. He shot 79 in the opening round and 72 on Tuesday. Joe Panzeri was 67th at 233 and Sterling Clark was 69 at 234. Washington senior James Lepp placed second at the second annual Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge to help the Huskies to a fifth-place showing. Lepp shot 6-under 210 during the 54-hole tournament, posting scores of 70, 69 and 71. Behind Lepp s play, the Huskies shot 1-under 287 during the final round to move up three spots on the final leaderboard. Lepp had five birdies and four bogies during his final round. Washington was sixth at last year s inaugural tournament when Alex Prugh posted a runner-up finish in stroke play. Husky junior Erik Olson had Washington s best final round score, shooting 3-under 69. Olson started the tournament with a 4-under 68 and then dropped back in the standings when he carded a 10-over 82 during Monday s second round. Olson finished 18th at 3-over 219. Prugh shot even-par 72 Tuesday to place 30th at 222 while Zach Bixler was 46th at 226 and Joe Panzeri was 60th at 233. Northwestern s David Merkow, who carded a 4-under 68 for the third round and a career-best 7-under 209 for the tournament, edged Lepp, the 2005 NCAA champion, by a single stroke for medalist honors. Minnesota s Antti Ahokas and Arizona State s Niklas Lemke finished two strokes back. Merkow helped Northwestern to a three-shot victory over Big Ten rival Minnesota. Arizona State was third at 865 and UCLA was fourth at 868.

Oregon s JV squad shot a tournament-best 299 to compile a three-round total of 917 and win the event for the second year in a row. St. Martin s Shane Prante won individual medalist honors by two strokes with an 8-over 224. Washington sophomore Joe Panzeri carded the Huskies best round of the day and the third-best overall, turning in a 1- over 73 to place 15th with an 18-over 234. Freshman John Wise held second position for the Dawgs, shooting 4-over 76 to finish 12th with a 16-over 232. Senior Seth Yates shot a final-round 79 to place 27th with a 24-over 240. The 29th-ranked Washington men s golf team finished 11th at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship, shooting 26-over 314 in the final round for a three-round total of 925. Host UNLV won the event at 879 after turning in a final-round 2-over 290. Erik Olson was the Huskies top finisher at Southern Highlands for the second consecutive year, placing 30th at 14-over 230 after a final-round 79. James Lepp was a stroke behind him, finishing 36th after carding an 81 in the third round. Finishing one stroke behind Lepp was Alex Prugh, who turned in a 79 and placed 44th at 232. Zach Bixler and Sterling Clark both shot 78s in the final round and placed 57th (235) and 70th (239), respectively. UNLV s Matt Kinsinger, who entered the event as an individual, won medalist honors at 2-under 214. Washington junior men s golfers Alex Prugh and Erik Olson finished the National Invitational with a flourish Tuesday, finishing the event as co-runners up with three other golfers, just one stroke behind medalist Jay Choi of New Mexico. The 24th-ranked Huskies finished 11th at 8-over 872 after shooting 2-over 290 in round three. UCLA won the team competition at 14-under 850. Prugh, who entered the final round in ninth place, shot 2-under 70 in sporadic rain to finish at 5-under 211. Olson, who started the day a stroke behind his teammate in 14th, carded a 3-under 69 to match Prugh and record a season-low tournament total, one stroke off his career low of 210. Prugh recorded five birdies and three bogies on the afternoon, while Olson shot three birdies without going over par on a single hole. For the tournament Olson recorded seven birdies and just two bogies: one each in the first and second rounds. The Renton, Wash., native shot 1-under 71 in each of the first two rounds and appeared headed that way again in round three before he birdied the par-4 sixth hole and the par-5 eighth, his 15th and 17th holes of the round. Prugh birdied holes 11 and 12 at the start of the final round before bogeying 13 and 14. He rebounded with a birdie on the par- 5 15th hole. The Spokane, Wash., native then birdied the fourth hole, bogeyed the seventh and birdied the eighth to enter the clubhouse 2-under. Prugh recorded six birdies and two bogeys in his round one effort, a 4-under 68, before shooting 1-over 73 in round two. Freshman John Wise held down third position for the Huskies, placing 43rd at 4-over 220 after shooting a final-round 3-over 75. Senior James Lepp placed 76th at 14-over 230 after carding a 4-over 76 on the afternoon, while freshman Kellen Eakin shot 6-over 76 and took 82nd at 19-over 235. Joe Panzeri Zach Bixler Sterling Clark Seth Yates Washington sophomore Joe Panzeri picked a good time to have a career day, shooting a career-low 6-under 66 to tie for medalist honors at the final round of the Duck Invitational. Panzeri, competing as an individual alongside three other Husky golfers, finished the tournament tied with Washington State s Ryan Witz at 5-under 211. The win marked the first time Panzeri has earned medalist honors as a Husky, and his tournament total score of 211 also established a new career-low. The Boise, Idaho, native made a late charge for the trophy, recording birdies on three of his last four holes. For the round, Panzeri notched six birdies and not a single bogey. He started the day in 15th. Panzeri, who shot 1-under 71 in round one and 2-over 74 in round two, was particularly strong on the greens. Panzeri was not the only Husky to shoot in the 60s on the afternoon, as fellow sophomore Zach Bixler turned in a 3-under 69 to finish the tournament in 15th at even-par 216. Sterling Clark also placed in the top 20, taking 17th at 2-over 218 after carding a 1-over 73 in the third round. Senior Seth Yates shot 5-over 77 to finish 51st at 14-over 230. Panzeri s win marked the second straight year that a Husky has been the medalist at the Duck Invitational and the third time in the last four years, as James Lepp took top honors in 2005 while Brock Mackenzie shared first place in The team competition, which Washington s delegation did not participate in, was won by San Diego State at 10-under 854. Washington s Erik Olson, the 2005 Pac-10 Individual Champion, placed in the Top-5 for the second-straight year, shooting 1-under 70 in the final round to finish third at 3-under 281. Joining him in the Top-10 was 2005 NCAA Champion James Lepp, who placed eighth at even-par 284 after shooting 1-over 72 on the afternoon. Alex Prugh and Zach Bixler joined Olson and Lepp in the Top-20. Prugh shot 3-over 74 in the fourth round, good for a composite score of 4-over 288 and 14th place in the field. Bixler shot 7-over 78 on the day and finished 17th at 6-over 290. Sterling Clark carded a 2-over 73 in the final round and placed 35th at 13-over 297. Joe Panzeri s 7-over 78 put him in 40th at 16-over 300. The 24th-ranked Washington men s golf team turned in the third-best single round in Husky history Saturday, shooting a scorching 17-under 271 on the third and final day of the NCAA West Regional in Tucson, Ariz. The UW s round was the best by any team in any round at what was a generally low-scoring event, and catapulted the Huskies from ninth place to third. The Top-10 finish earned Washington a berth at the NCAA Championship, held this year at the Crosswater Club in Sunriver, Ore., May 31-June 3. The Huskies 54-hole total of 24-under 840 was a season best and trailed only Florida and Arizona (both 37-under 827). All five Huskies finished the final round under par and four of the five UW golfers shot rounds in the 60s. UW s Zach Bixler continued his excellence on day three, shooting a season-best 5-under 67 to finish third in the 141-man field at 12-under 204. Bixler s third-place finish established a new career best, as did his 54-hole total of 204. The sophomore s round included seven birdies (holes one, five, eight, 10, 11, 13 and 16) and two bogeys. Bixler shot in the 60s on all three days of the West Regional ( ) and has shot rounds in the 60s in five of seven postseason rounds (including rounds one and three of the Pac-10 Championship). Bixler was not the hottest Husky in the third round, however, as junior Alex Prugh shot a bogey-free 6-under 66 that included four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole. Prugh finished the tournament in 32nd place at 4-under 212. James Lepp held second position for the Huskies, shooting 3-under 69 for the second day in a row to place 18th at 7-under 209, a season best. Erik Olson also shot 69 and placed 57th at 1-under 215 for the tournament. Sterling Clark s 1-under 71 slotted him 99th at 7-over 223. The Washington men s golf team shot 13-over 301 in the final round at the NCAA Championship, placing the Huskies ninth with a total score of 6-over Oklahoma State won the team title with a 72-hole total of 9-under Defending NCAA Champion James Lepp finished eighth in his final tournament as a Husky, shooting 2-over 74 in the final round and 3-under 285 for the tournament. Oklahoma State s Jonathan Moore won the individual title at 12-under 276. In second position for the Huskies was Alex Prugh, who shot 2-over 74 on the day and 1-under 287 overall. Zach Bixler shot 5-over 77 in round four to finish 20th at even-par 288. Erik Olson placed 66th at 10-over 298 after carding a 4-over 76 in the final round. Sterling Clark s 80 placed him 81st at 32-over 320. The Huskies ninth-place showing was the fourth-best NCAA Championship finish in Washington history and marked the third straight year that the UW placed in the top-10.

Wise, a sophomore who competed in just two varsity tournament for the Huskies last year, shot one-under 71 in the final round to finish seven-under 209 overall. Wise, competing as an individual, entered the third round in second place behind UCLA s Lucas Lee after carding rounds of four-under 68 and two-under 72 in the first and second rounds, respectively, on Monday. Lee ended up finishing second overall, one stroke behind Wise at six-under 210. The Bruins led wire to wire to win the team title. Washington ended up 12 strokes ahead of third-place finisher UC Davis (12-over 876). Cal ended up in fourth place (13- over 877), followed by Washington State (17-over 881), Loyola Marymount (22-over 886), San Diego State (23-over 887), Oregon State (27-over 891) and Oregon (32-over 896). 32 HISTORY Husky Golf Historical REVIEW COACHES PLAYERS 2007 SEASON EXPERIENCE COURSES HISTORY RECORDS 32 The Early Years The establishment of a golf course on the Washington campus in 1920 led to the organization of a golf team in The Varsity Golf Club was formed in 1923 and William Jefferson became the school s first golf coach in Golf was elevated to a major letter award program in 1947 thanks to its success. Jack Westlund Jack Westlund was the first great golfer at Washington. Just two years after the first team was organized Westlund won the Northwest Conference championship in On June 26 of that year he defeated Yale s Frank Wattles in the semifinals of the National Intercollegiate tournament. The next day Westlund fell to Tulane s Fred Lambrecht for the national title. Huskies Debut at NCAAs in 1946 After going unbeated and untied in the Pacific Coast Conference Northern Division, Washington sent four golfers to represent the University at the NCAA Championships for the first time. The 1946 tournament was held at Princeton. The Husky team of Harold Tass Gjolme, Joe Greene, Jack Hazlett and Vern Burns led Washington to an eighth-place finish. The 1948 PCC Northern Division Champions Pacific Coast Conference Titles From 1935 to 1959 Washington s golf team competed in the Northern Division of the Pacific Coast Conference. Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, Montana and Idaho competed against Washington in conference play. The Huskies and Ducks dominated the golf titles. Washington claimed eight titles between 1935 and 1959 while Oregon won 17 championships. The Huskies won Northern Division titles in 1935, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1942, 1946, 1948 and Carl Jonson (1937), Palmer Smith (1940), Ernie Jacobs (1943), Paul Johanson (1951, 1953) and Don Russell (1951, 1952) all won individual championships for Washington & 1963 Conference Titles Washington won its first Pac-10 Championship (known as the Athletic Association of Western Universities at the time) in 1961 at the Rainier Golf and Country Club in Seattle. The Huskies shot 1,181 to defeat USC by two strokes in the 72-hole competition. The Huskies were led by medalist Clint Names, who won by three strokes at 286. UW s Del Harris was third overall at 294 while Jack Lamey was eighth at 299. Jack Craig placed 12th at 302 while George Kauffman was 18th at 308. Two years later the Huskies won the Bix Six Championship at the Stanford Golf Course. This time the Huskies edged USC by one stroke, 1,197 to 1,198 for the title. Bruce Richards was second overall at 290. Bill Tindall was sixth at 299, Chuck Ainslie eighth at 302. Bob Litton shot 306 shile seniors Joe Bush and Jack Craig finished at 316. Clint Names Clint Names carved his name into Washington s golf record books in 1961 when he won the Pac-10 (known as the Athletic Association of Western Universities at the time) Championship. He led the Huskies to the team championship with a score of 286. Washington beat USC by two strokes for the team crown. Names was a three-time letterman for both the Husky golf and basketball teams. He started for the hoops squad during the 1960 and 61 seasons, averaging 12.2 points per game as a senior guard Pac-10 Champions Behind the play of medalist O.D. Vincent, Washington won its first conference championship in 25 years at Orinda Country Club. The Huskies won by six strokes over defending champion Arizona, 1,104 to 1,110. Vincent, a sophomore shot 2-under 214 to win by four strokes. UW s Todd Tibke and Scott Whaley were instrumental in the victory. They tied for second at 218. Vincent became the first golfer from the Pacific Northwest to claim the crown since Oregon s Peter Jacobsen in UW coach Bill Tindall became the first Husky golf coach to earn Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors. The Huskies went on to finish 15th at the NCAAs behind Vincent s 19-place finish at 294. It was UW s first trip to the NCAAs in 22 years. Vincent led the field after 36 holes when he opened with back-to-back 69s at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. Ted Himka shot 300, Mike Swingle finished at 306, Whaley was fourth for UW at 319 and Tibke shot 322. O.D. Vincent Considered one of the finest players in Husky history, O.D. Vincent is also recognized among his peers as a successful coach, directing the Husky program from In Feb., 2000, Vincent was named National Coach of the Year by the College Golf Coaches Association. In his fourth year as head men s coach, UW had arguably the most successful season in school history, capturing three event titles and a then-school record fourth-place finish at the NCAAs. Prior to his national honor, Vincent was named Pac-10 Co- Coach of the Year. As a player, Vincent put UW golf back on the map by winning the 1988 Pac-10 Championship while leading the Huskies to the team title. Vincent also won the Hammond-Bell Pacific Coast Intercollegiate and set a three-round school record at the Stanford/U.S. Intercollegiate with a score of six-under 210. At the NCAAs, Vincent was the leader after two rounds before slipping into a 19th-place tie. Vincent also enjoyed success after college. In November, 1991, he fired a final-round 67 and became the only American to qualify for the European Tour in In the 1992 British Open, he was among the leaders throughout the first two rounds. He resigned as UW s coach in in 2001 to return to again pursue a professional career. He is now the head men s golf coach at UCLA. Michael Combs Though he only played one season for the Huskies, Mike Combs has a place in the Washington record books as the only Husky graduate to compete in the Masters. Combs played his first three years at Oklahoma before coming to UW for his final year in A native of Kennewick, Wash., Combs played in all 37 of UW s competitive rounds, averaging 73.9 strokes. His best finish was a second-place showing at the Nike Northwest Collegiate Classic, where he fashioned back-to-back 70s to finish at 212. In the summer of 1990, Combs won the United State Public Links Championship in Portland, Ore., and thereby qualified for the 1991 Masters. At Augusta, Combs had the opportunity to play with Jack Nicklaus during the first two rounds, firing a two-round total of 155. Combs missed the cut, but shot a second-round 74. Brock Mackenzie Brock Mackenzie completed his Washington career in 2004 as the most decorated player in school history, earning All-America honors during all four of his years as a Husky. He was a PING first-team All-American in 2003 and 2004, a second-team pick as a sophomore in 2002 and an honorable mention pick as a freshman. Mackenzie was a first-team All-Pac-10 performer from As a junior he tied the collegiate scoring record by carding a 12-under 60 to set the course record at the Eugene Country Club during the Oregon Duck Invitational. He owns the UW records for individual championships (four), stroke average (70.6 in 2004), singlerounds played (47 in 2002), career rounds played (165), single-season top-10 finishes (11 in 2002) and career top-10 finishes (32). Mackenzie led UW in stroke average all four of his seasons. He was named Washington s Top Dawg Award winner as the school s outstanding senior student athlete in He was also recognized as a Pac-10 Medalist that year. He was a member of the 2002 Palmer Cup and won all three of his matches while representing the United States at the 2003 Walker Cup. Mackenzie Shoots 60 Washington junior Brock Mackenzie became just the third collegiate golfer to shoot 60 during a tournament when he carded a 12-under round on March 23, 2003 at the Eugene Country Club. Georgia Tech s Bryce Molder was the only other college player to post a 12-under round. Arizona State s Paul Casey had also shot 60, but his was

33 Husky Golf Historical at the par-71 Broadmoor Country Club in Seattle. Mackenzie posted his record setting score during his second round of the day at Oregon s Duck Invitational. He completed his round in wet and rainy conditions just minutes before darkness would have halted the competition. Mackenzie s score was a course record for the Eugene Country Club. It also shattered the previous Washington single-round score of 64 which was shared by teammates John Robertson and Dan Potter. Mackenzie s previous best collegiate score was a 65. Mackenzie carded an eagle on his first hole during shotgun play and went on to add 10 more birdies. He was 7-under 28 for his front nine and 5-under 32 for his back nine NCAA Regional Champions Washington won its first NCAA Regional title in 2002 when the Huskies overcame a two-shot deficit to tie New Mexico for the West Regional Championship. Washington turned in its best round, a 288, during the final day of to finish the 54-hole tournament at 872. The Huskies were led by sophomore Brock Mackenzie, who carded a final round score of 5-under 67 to tie for fourth place overall at 215. Mackenzie s finish was the second best showing by a UW golfer at a NCAA regional. Washington s Dan Potter finished 34th overall at 221 while John Robertson was 60th at 224. Corey Prugh was 72nd at 226 and Conner Robbins finished 112th at 232. The victory was the Huskies fifth championship during the season. Walker Cup Washington s Brock Mackenzie became the first Husky to play in the Walker Cup. During the summer of 2003 he was one of 10 players representing the United States in the 39th Walker Cup Match at the Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, England. Mackenzie won all three of his matches but it was not enough as the United States team failed to regain The Walker Cup, losing to Great Britain and Ireland by a score of 12 1/2 to 11 1/2. The Walker Cup Match is contested by male amateur players, one team from the United States and one team from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Rob Rashell Former Washington men s golfer Rob Rashell placed second at the 2004 PGA Qualifying School to earn his exemption to the 2005 PGA Tour. Rashell shot 416 over the six-round event and finished one stroke behind England s Brian Davis. Rashell claimed $40,000 from the event s $1.2 million purse. Rashell had rounds of 68, 68, 70, 67, 74 and 69 at the event, which was held at PGA West Stadium Course and the Jack Nicklas Tournament Course. Rashell lettered at Washington from , leading the team in stroke average as a junior. Rashell never won a tournament as a collegiate player, but finished his career as UW s all-time leader with 18 top-10 finishes. Erik Olson and the Huskies Take Home 2005 Pac-10 Titles The Washington men s golf team completed an amazing comeback to capture the 2005 Pac-10 Championship at the Walla Walla Country Club. After finishing the first round in last place, 20 strokes behind tournament leader Arizona State, the Huskies fought their way back up the leaderboard to win the school s first team championship in the sport since UW sophomore Erik Olson won medalist honors, becoming the first Husky individual champion since O.D. Vincent in Washington s entered Wednesday s final round in fifth place, trailing the Sun Devils by 17 strokes. The Huskies were able to make up the difference by shooting the second best single-round score of the tournament. Washington fired a 5-under 350, one of just two team scores under par on the day, while the Sun Devils ended the round at 12-over 367. The two teams finished with identical 5-over, 72-hole scores of 1,425, but Washington won the league s tiebreaker as a result of better cumulative six-man team score in the final round. The Huskies shot 11-under during the final three rounds of the tournament. Olson won his first college tournament by shooting 8-under 276 to beat Arizona s Nathan Lashley by one stroke and ASU s Pat Moore by two shots. Olson carded a 2-under 69 Wednesday after posting scores of 70, 69 and 68 during his first three rounds. Olson becomes the third Husky to win the Pac-10 stroke play title, joining Vincent and Clint Names. HISTORY James Lepp (right) accepts the 2005 NCAA Championship trophy. James Lepp Wins the 2005 NCAA Title With the drop of a two-foot putt during a third playoff hole, Washington junior James Lepp won the 2005 NCAA Division I Men s Golf Championship to cap a remarkable final round effort. Lepp rallied from a six-shot deficit during the final day of play by shooting a course record 7-under 63 at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mill, Md. to force the playoff with Pepperdine s Michael Putnam. After struggling to a 76 during a rain-soaked third round, Lepp entered the final round tied for eighth with four other players at 3-over 213. He had shot 70 and 67 during the first two days of play. Starting on the back nine, Lepp parred his first three holes before recording birdies on the par-5 13th hole and the short par-4 14th hole. A bogie on the lengthy 480-yard 17th hole dropped him back to one-under. He then birdied 18, a hole where he would eventually win the playoff, to turn at 2-under. Lepp ripped off birdies on the first three holes on the front side of the course to push himself to five-under. He used a deft wedge shot on the par-5 seventh hole to make a four-foot birdie putt and then he one-putted the par-3 eighth hole to improve to seven-under. After his drive drifted into the first cut on the par-4, 435-yard ninth hole, he overshot the green with his approach shot and then found his ball plugged in the rough. He executed a beautiful soft wedge to within several feet of the cup and saved par (see cover). Putnam bogied the 16th hole as Lepp was finishing his round to fall back into a tie at 4-under. Putnam s approach shot on the 18th hole spun back below the green and he was forced to make a long 12-footer to make par and force the playoff. Playing No. 18 as the first playoff hole, Lepp found himself in trouble when his fairway iron plugged in a bunker just right of the green s pin. A soft bunker shot and 10-foot putt kept him alive as Putnam two-putted from 30 feet. Moving to the No. 9 hole, both players hit the green in regulation and two-putted to force the deciding third playoff hole. Lepp outdrove Putnam on their second trip to No. 18, but then saw his approach shot land 40 feet from the pin on the lower left side of the green. Putnam s fairway shot was also left, but five feet inside of Lepp. Putting first, Lepp lagged his putt just three feet from the pin. Putnam s first putt rolled almost six feet past the cup and close to the spot where he ended regulation with his lengthy par effort. This time Putnam s putt missed by two inches and the cool-handed Lepp made his par to claim the title. Led by Lepp s play, Washington shot 4-under 276 Saturday to place third, the best finish in the program s history. Lepp joined a distinctive list of Pac-10 players who have won the NCAA title that includes Arizona State s Phil Mickelson (1989, 1990, 1992), USC s Scott Simpson (1976, 1977) and Stanford s Tiger Woods (1996). 33

34 COURSES Washington National Golf Club 2007 SEASON REVIEW COACHES PLAYERS When Washington National Golf Club opened in August of 2000, it became the new home for the Husky Golf team. Thanks to a sponsorship agreement between Washington National and the University, the course features a distinctive Husky brand, from the golf carts, to flag sticks, to its company logo. University faculty, staff and students are entitled to special discounted fees at Washington National. Five sets of tees (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Husky) stretch the course from 5,117 yards to 7,304 yards. The course was selected for the site of the 2002 NCAA Division I Women s Golf Championships and the 2003 NCAA Division I Men s Golf Regionals, and hosted the 2006 Division I Women s Regionals last spring. The Husky Golf Practice Facility, located on the back of the driving range at Washington National, is a major reason for the success of Washington s men s and women s golf programs. The facility is dedicated exclusively for the use of the two teams, allowing them to practice independently and participate in team activities that aren t possible at other facilities. This allows the Husky coaches to create appropriate playing conditions in preparation for upcoming events and allows them to work on specific skills. The range tee at the practice facility is 70 yards wide and 35 yards deep. There are numerous target greens, all of which are shaped like real greens and seeded with the same bent grass as the greens on the course. With the size of the tee and the location of these greens the teams can practice at any yardage with their wedges. The facility also features two large greens used for putting, chipping, and bunker play. They are well-conditioned and excellent for practicing the short game. In case of an occasional rain, the facility has a movable cover that up to five golfers can practice under. This allows the Huskies to hit off of real grass and be dry no matter what the weather. When the weather is nice, Husky golfers enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Rainier. Its internationally acclaimed faculty includes five Nobel laureates and the winner of the 1990 National Book Award for fiction. Washington is part of an elite group of research universities whose contributions to American life are unique because they generate the basic knowledge upon which practical innovations are based. The UW student body on the Seattle campus totals about 39,000, with an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 25,000. 37 Key Athletics Administrators University President Mark Emmert Mark A. Emmert became the 30th president of the University of Washington on June 14, An alumnus of the UW, Emmert seeks to expand the University s stellar national and international standing. With the UW already ranked as the leading public university in terms of research grants and contracts, Emmert hopes to work with faculty and staff to support continued growth of seminal research and to provide students with even greater educational opportunities. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Emmert was chancellor of Louisiana State University for five years. There, he developed and launched a comprehensive Flagship Agenda, a strategic plan to improve LSU s academic reputation and position it among the finest public universities in the country. Before his appointment to LSU, Emmert served five years as Chancellor and Provost of the University of Connecticut. Previous to that, he was Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Montana State University and held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Colorado. Emmert has been an American Council on Education Fellow and a J.W. Fulbright Administrative Fellow. He is co-chair of the Prosperity Partnership and of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges Board of Oceans and Atmosphere. He is also a member of the Puget Sound Partnership and the National Security Higher Education Advisory Board. A 1975 graduate of the UW, where he majored in political science, Emmert received his doctoral and master s degrees in public administration from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. He and his wife, DeLaine, are natives of Fife, Washington. They have two children, Steve and Jennifer. Senior Associate Athletic Director Marie Tuite Marie Tuite enters her 13th year as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Programs and Student Services in She is also Washington s Senior Women s Administrator. During her first 12 years at Washington, the Huskies have enjoyed a tremendous amount of success. Since her arrival at the UW, the Huskies have steadily improved in postseason appearances. In , 15 of Washington s teams were represented in postseason competition. That number rose to 17 in In all 23 programs qualified or sent representatives to postseason play, and in 2000, five Husky teams earned Pac-10 Championships. Tuite, a native of Livonia, Mich., joined the Husky staff after serving as the Assistant Director of Championships for the National Collegiate Athletic Association. She was a liaison for the NCAA s sports committees in the administration and conduct of various championships. Her duties included working with host institutions, coordinating corporate sponsor programs, merchandising and promotions. During her tenure at the NCAA, Tuite oversaw the administration of the Division I men s soccer championship, the Division I men s volleyball championship, the Division I women s gymnastics championship, the Division I women s softball College World Series and the 40-team Division III men s basketball championship. She also worked with the NCAA Division I women s lacrosse championship and the Division I swimming and diving championship. Tuite is no stranger to the Pac-10 Conference. She served as the assistant women s athletic director at California from Her responsibilities included managing, developing and controlling fiscal policies for the department; supervising capital construction projects; management of home athletic events; supervision of the business office and support staff and insuring department compliance with university, NCAA and conference policies and procedures. In 2001, Tuite began her five-year term of service as a member of the NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Committee. She is responsible for the organization and administration of the Pac-10 Conference Women s Basketball Tournament, and serves on the Senior Women s Television Committee. A 1975 graduate of Central Michigan with a bachelor of science in physical education, Tuite lettered for the Chippewas in basketball and field hockey. In 1981 she earned her master of arts degree in athletic administration from Central Michigan. Tuite was inducted into the Central Michigan Hall of Fame in Tuite has two sons, Josh and Jake. THE HUSKY EXPERIENCE Athletics Director Todd Turner William Todd Turner was named director of intercollegiate athletics at the University of Washington on June 19, The 54-year-old Turner is the 15th athletic director in Washington s history. A veteran of 28 years as an athletics administrator, Washington is the fourth university where Turner has served as athletics director. He came to the UW after directing Vanderbilt s athletics program for the previous seven years. His position was dissolved in 2003 when the department was placed under the direction of the Office of Student Athletics, Recreation and Wellness. Turner previously held the position of athletics director at North Carolina State and of Connecticut. He also worked in athletics administration at Virginia. As the director at Washington, Turner oversees one of the nation s most successful athletics programs. In his first year alone, two Husky teams won Pac-10 titles, while five UW coaches were named Pac-10 Coach of the Year. In addition, 12 of UW s 23 intercollegiate teams finished among the top-16 in the nation, and two Husky individuals won NCAA titles. The UW athletic program finished 13th in the United States Sports Academy s Directors Cup rankings. It includes 23 sport programs with a $39.5 million annual budget. Approximately 650 student-athletes compete for Washington s athletic teams, while the department includes a staff of 195. In the most recent NCAA graduation report, Washington student-athletes graduated at 84 percent, slightly ahead of the graduation rate for all UW students. A 1976 graduate of the Ohio University Sports Administration program, Turner received a Bachelor of Arts degree in religion from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in He earned the Ohio University Graduate School s Distinguished Alumni Award in Turner, a native of Raleigh, N.C., is married to the former Sara Newbold, also of Raleigh. They have four children: Kate, Allison, Molly, and Drew. Executive Associate Athletic Director Jeff Compher Jeff Compher enters his second year as UW s Executive Associate Athletic Director. Compher serves as the general manager for the Husky athletic department, coordinating the daily administrative operations of the department with special emphasis on the football, men s basketball, baseball and men s and women s crew programs, as well as the administrative operations that support those teams. Compher also helps to develop long-range and annual operating plans, and chairs the senior management team, overseeing the operation of all senior managers. Prior to coming to Washington, Compher spent the previous four years as director of athletics at Western Carolina University, overseeing a department of 15 intercollegiate athletic programs and 300 student-athletes. Compher initiated several major programs that significantly improved Western Carolina s overall program. During his tenure, the Catamounts built and renovated facilities totalling nearly $15 million. He developed a private sports medicine partnership, created a former student-athlete organization and started a successful CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Compher developed and implemented a five-year strategic plan and led Western through the NCAA Certification process. Compher worked with Todd Turner at Vanderbilt from From 1998 to 2000, he served as senior associate director of athletics. He was responsible for all external components within the athletic department, including annual giving, media relations, marketing and promotions, corporate sponsorship sales, radio and television properties and broadcast rights and ticket sales. Compher began his career as an assistant athletic director at North Carolina State from 1986 to He later worked at N.C. State Chancellor s office from 1993 to Compher, 47, earned his bachelor of science in psychology from James Madison in He graduated from Shippensburg (Pa.) in 1982 with a master of science degree in counselling and student personnel services. He and his wife, Cathy, have two sons, C.J. and David. Compher is a native of Baltimore. 37

The University of Washington is committed to promoting student athletic achievement as a complement to the greater academic mission of the University. Recognizing this commitment, the staff of Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS) assists student-athletes through a variety of academic and life-skills programs that address the needs of a diverse population. The primary goal of SAAS is to help student-athletes develop their academic potential and achieve success in reaching their academic goals. The staff of SAAS works closely with faculty, coaches, student services and University administration to help student-athletes balance the demands of academics and athletics. In addition to its role as a direct academic service provider, Student-Athlete Academic Services also strives to make student-athletes aware of the various services and resources available to them at the University, and to help them make the best use of these resources. In addition to classroom effort, the SAAS staff of Academic Advisors, Academic Coordinators, a Tutorial Coordinator and a Learning Specialist recognize that a student-athlete's academic performance is influenced by a number of factors, including individual learning styles; satisfaction with his or her choice of major; personal and social life; as well as athletic standing. Because of these various influences, SAAS directly assists student-athletes with matters pertaining to: Academic Planning and Advising Tutorial and Specialized Classroom Support Personal Counseling Admissions Financial Aid In addition to these services, SAAS houses a computing center for student-athlete use. In the spring of 2005, SAAS moved its operations into the state-of-the-art Conibear Shellhouse and Student Services Building, among the finest student-athlete academic support facilities in the nation. In addition to housing the crew house and student dining facilities, the new building features state-of-the-art computer lab facilities, large study tables and small-group tutoring spaces, a student lounge, and staff offices. With its central location in the UW athletic department, close to all of Washington's athletic practice facilities, the new academic center is an outstanding resource for student-athletes, helping them reach for the same standard of excellence in academics as is sought in athletics. 39 Sports Performance & Health Washington s Sports Performance program is headquartered in the 12,000-foot weight room facility that houses a balance of machine apparatus and free weights as well as a variety of modern fitness equipment. The spacious room is equipped with some 15,000 pounds of Olympic weights, 34 Olympic bars, eight Olympic benches, six incline benches, three military benches, three knee extension and hamstring curl machines, eight Olympic power racks, 60 pairs of dumbbells, six exercise bikes and three Stairmasters, as well as numerous other cutting edge apparatus. The weight room, housed in the Graves Annex Building (which also contains the football coaches offices as well as offices for most other sports coaches), doubles UW s previous workout space and resources. Planned fitness programs are aided by computerized training and evaluations, video instruction, a plyometric testing area, and a sauna and jacuzzi. Apparatus representing the latest technology in fitness and strength training are continually being added to the weight room, ensuring that Husky athletes have every opportunity to excel. Located near all of the athletes locker rooms and practice and competition venues, the weight room is a convenient stop during the student-athletes busy days. A long list of Husky athletes have been voted to the National All-Strength Team. Washington s athletic training staff consists of seven full-time certified athletic trainers, 12 student trainers and a staff of seven doctors, all working to help provide the 700-plus Husky student-athletes the best available medical care. In addition, a network of other specialists dentists, optometrists, etc. are all available for any of the UW student-athletes needs. University of Washington Sports Medicine, located in Bank of America Arena, provides medical and orthopaedic care for the Husky athletes as well as the Seattle community. UWSM physicians include Drs. Roger Larson, John O Kane, Trey Green, Kim Harmon, Jon Drezner, Carol Teitz, Chris Wahl and Monique Burton. They are all fellowship trained in sports medicine and have faculty appointments and clinical practices at the UW. The physical health and safety of all Washington student-athletes is of paramount importance to all Husky coaches and medical personnel. To that end, the Husky training staff vigilantly continues the educational process, keeping informed on all of the various advancements in the field of sports medicine. THE HUSKY EXPERIENCE 39
