The loss snapped a two-game winning streak that followed wins over common TCU opponents Navy (82-63) and Prairie View A&M (76-70). The squad s only other loss came on the road at Creighton (77-60). First-year head coach Jerod Haase leads a squad that returns seven letterwinners and three starters from last year s edition that posted a overall record and finished fifth in Conference USA with a 9-7 league mark. Junior forward Rod Rucker tops the team this season in scoring (15.0 ppg), rebounding (9.0 rpg) and blocked shots (1.2 bpg). Other players averaging double figures in scoring include junior forward Jordan Swing (13.8 ppg) and junior center Fahro Alihodzic (11.2 ppg). Senior guard Terence Jones is the team s top assist man (5.0 apg). As a team, UAB averages scoring 77.6 points with an overall shooting percentage of 43.0%. The squad has dominated the glass to the tune of a +6.2 average rebounding edge, while it ranks No. 14 nationally in assist average (18.8 apg). THE SERIES: TCU VS. UAB Former Conference USA rivals, TCU and UAB have met eight previous times. The Blazers own a slim 5-3 all-time edge. The two teams have met once previously at a neutral site, with TCU dropping a decision in the first round of the Holiday Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., on Dec. 27, TCU vs. UAB All-Time Meetings Date W/L Score Site Dec. 27, 1985 L Las Vegas Mar. 12, 1997 W Fort Worth Jan. 29, 2002 L Fort Worth Feb. 12, 2002 W Birmingham Jan. 29, 2003 L (OT) Birmingham Feb. 18, 2003 L (OT) Fort Worth Mar. 6, 2004 L Birmingham Feb. 12, 2005 W Fort Worth LAST TIME OUT: N WESTERN 55, TCU 31 TCU dropped its first game of the 2012 South Padre Island Invitational on Friday to Northwestern, 55-31, at the South Padre Island Convention Center. Devonta Abron led the Horned Frogs with 12 points. TCU had a difficult night from the field, as Northwestern held the squad to only 26.5% shooting overall, its worst figure of the season. TCU did manage to win the rebounding battle (38-33) while holding the Wildcats to only 38.3% shooting themselves, but NU outscored the Frogs by 26 points beyond the arc (6-of- 19) and at the free-throw line (13-of-14). The Frogs were held without a 3-pointer in a game for the first time since Nov. 22, 1997 vs. LIU-Brooklyn, a span of 443 consecutive games. The streak was the third-longest among all Big 12 teams. Abron led the Frogs in the scorebook for the second straight contest with 12 points and added a game-high eight rebounds. Abron made 5-of-8 attempts from the floor. Northwestern had three players reach double figures, including Jared Swopshire, who scored a game-high 15 points, and Drew Crawford and Reggie Hearn, who totaled 12 each. TCU-N WESTERN POSTGAME NOTES 4TCU s 31 points tied for the eighth-fewest in a game in school history and the fewest since a loss to SMU on Feb. 14, Northwestern was the first opponent to outshoot TCU so far this season. 4TCU s 14 first-half points marked the fourth-fewest ever scored in an opening period by a Horned Frog squad. 4Devonta Abron became the first Frog to lead the team in scoring more than once through the team s first six games. DEFENSE IS KEY IN TCU is expected to lean heavily on its defensive play this season following the loss of nearly 60 percent of last year s scoring totals to either graduation or injury. The squad has stepped up this season after ranking as one of the nation s worst defensive teams in TCU is No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 3 in the NCAA in opponent scoring average (49.2 ppg). 4The comparison between defensive figures from last year to this year is staggering: Category (rank) (rank) Scoring Defense 49.2 (No. 3) 72.1 (No. 286) FG Pct. Defense 35.5% (No. 23) 47.8% (No. 327) 3FG Pct. Defense 29.2% (No. 90) 37.4% (No. 306) 4TCU has allowed fewer than 50 points in four of six games. Prior to this season, TCU s last four efforts giving up fewer than 50 stretched back 122 games to the 2008 campaign. 4TCU allowed 39 points to Prairie View A&M on Nov. 18, the fewest for an opponent since Colgate had 37 on Dec. 30, KEEPING IT CLOSE TCU has made a habit of playing in close games this season, with four of six contests being decided by seven points or fewer. The Frogs have overcome second-half deficits in three of their four victories. 4TCU erased a 14-point deficit in its Nov. 18 win over Prairie View A&M, the fifth time since the start of last season the squad won after trailing by double digits. 4TCU led the nation last season with 13 victories coming by six points or fewer. The figure was three more than in any previous season in program history. INJURY STATUS TCU has suffered a pair of season-ending knee injuries so far this season, one to an experienced veteran in Amric Fields and the other to newcomer Aaron Durley. 4Fields suffered a major knee injury just 12 seconds into TCU s home matchup with SMU in the third game of the season. The injury happened on a non-contact play in which he caught the ball running across the lane and attempted to make a cut toward the hoop. 4Big things were expected of Fields after he became TCU s first-ever conference sixth man of the year last season as a sophomore in the Mountain West. He ranked fourth on the team in scoring average (9.6 ppg). 4Fields 543 career points and 66 games played ranked second on the team entering the season. 4Durley also suffered a major knee injury on another noncontact play in preseason workouts, experiencing the setback after coming down with a rebound. Durley underwent surgery and will redshirt this season. 4Durley was looked at as an important addition to the Frogs frontcourt in the offseason. His injury leaves only Adrick McKinney and Devonta Abron as five-men on the roster. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES 4TCU had connected on at least one 3-pointer in 443 straight games dating back to prior to being held without one during the Nov. 23 loss to Northwestern. The streak, which ranked No. 3 among Big 12 teams, stretched back to a November 22, 1997 home win over LIU-Brooklyn. 4TCU has connected on at least one 3-pointer in 659 of its last 661 games. 4The Frogs have posted an all-time record of (.426) in overtime games and (.547) in overtime games at Daniel- Meyer Coliseum. TCU is a combined 4-0 in games that last past two overtimes in its history. BIG // #3
