TCU looks to rebound from its first setback of the year suffered Thursday to SMU, Even bigger than the outcome was the loss of star Frog forward Amric Fields to a knee injury in the opening seconds of the contest. TCU hopes to regroup against Prairie View A&M, as the Frogs are unbeaten in two previous matchups against the Panthers all-time. Sunday s contest will be televised by FOX Sports Southwest (DirecTV 676; Dish 437) with the veteran Frog radio tandem of Brian Estridge (play-by-play) and John Denton (analyst) calling the action on TV. Veteran broadcaster Jeff Williams (pxp) and former Horned Frog Herb Stephens (analyst) will fill in on the TCU-IMG Sports Network radio broadcast, which will air live in Metroplex on both 1460 AM KCLE and 88.7 FM KTCU. The squad has faced one Big 12 opponent prior to today s game, dropping an decision at Texas Tech in the season opener. The Panthers two victories have come at home against Schreiner (80-51) and Arlington Baptist (91-38). Seventh-year head coach Byron Rimm II leads a team that was picked as this year s preseason favorite in the Southwest Athletic Conference. PVAMU features two players averaging double figures in points early this season in senior guard Jordan DeMuynck (12.7 ppg) and junior forward Josh Eleby (10.0 ppg). DeMuynck also is the team s leading rebounder (5.7 rpg) and is averaging 3.0 steals in three games. Senior guard Carl Blair has dished out 21 assists in four contests. As a team, the Panthers own a scoring average of 77.2 points and shoot 45.5% from the floor. Defensive has been key for the team, as it has limited opponents to only 35.8% shooting while recording 12.3 steals per game on the season. THE SERIES: TCU VS. PRAIRIE VIEW A&M TCU owns a 2-0 lead in the all-time series against Prairie View A&M, winning both previous matchups in Fort Worth. The teams last met two years ago at the DMC (Dec. 1, 2010), with the Frogs posting a victory. The only other contest between the two programs resulted in a TCU win back on Dec. 28, LAST TIME WE MET: TCU VS. PVAMU* *Box score on page 14. J.R. Cadot led TCU with then-career highs of 15 points and nine rebounds, and the Frogs remained perfect at the DMC with a victory over Prairie View A&M on Dec. 1, TCU improved to 6-2 overall with the win. The Frogs shook off what little fatigue may have set in prior to its third game in five days, putting together a sharp offensive performance. Cadot led a balanced TCU attack featuring four players in double figures. He went a perfect 7-of-7 from the field to run his streak of consecutive shots made to 14. Cadot s strong shooting was typical of TCU s offensive performance at home. The squad shot 51.7%, the fourth time in five games the squad surpassed the 50% mark. Three other players scored 12 points each, including Hank Thorns, who led the team with 10 in the opening half. Ronnie Moss and Garlon Green both added 12 points. The trio of Thorns, Moss and Green combined to go 6-of-8 from beyond the arc, including a 3-of-4 showing by Moss. Moss also totaled a team-high eight assists. LAST TIME OUT: SMU 64, TCU 61 TCU s attempt at a late rally fell short, as SMU slipped out of Daniel-Meyer Coliseum with a victory over the Horned Frogs on Thursday. Garlon Green scored 20 points to lead the Frogs after the squad lost Amric Fields to injury early. TCU trailed for the entire game and by as many as 11 points midway through the second half before making a run at SMU. The squad posted a 13-5 spurt thanks in part to three Green field goals to cut the deficit to only three points, 54-51, with 4:27 remaining. The Mustangs stayed in front by turning up their defensive effort and held the Frogs to only three buckets the rest of the way. The Frogs did have one last opportunity, getting the ball back with under seven seconds remaining following four straight missed SMU free throws. But Kyan Anderson s last-second desperation 3-point shot to tie the game was blocked by Ryan Manuel just prior to the final buzzer. TCU found itself shorthanded Thursday against the Mustangs, losing its standout forward Fields to an apparent knee injury just seconds into the contest. Green helped pick up the slack, recording his fourth career 20-point performance and pulling down a season-high nine rebounds. Jarvis Ray added a career-best 14 points and drew three big charge calls, while Nate Butler Lind matched a career high with 10 points. TCU-SMU POSTGAME NOTES 4Green led TCU in scoring for the ninth time in his career and the first time this season with 20 points. It marked his fourth career 20-point effort. 4Ray set a new career scoring high with 14 points, topping the previous best of 12 points he scored in last season s home win over Austin College (Nov. 11). 4Ray reached double digits in scoring for the second consecutive game. He had broken the 10-point barrier only once in his career prior to this season. 4Butler Lind matched his career scoring high previously set in last season s home CBI Tournament win over Milwaukee (March 13) with 10 points. 4Kyan Anderson tied a career high with eight assists. He previously reached the mark in last season s home win over Colorado State (Feb. 11, 2012). GREEN LEADS SENIOR CLASS TCU features a four-man senior class led by guard/forward Garlon Green, the undisputed veteran of the group. 4Green leads TCU so far this season in scoring average (11.3 ppg), rebounding (6.7 rpg) and blocked shots (1.3 bpg). 4Green is the only player on the team who has spent more than two years on the roster. 4Green is TCU s active leader in points (863), rebounds (360), steals (44), 3-pointers (95), games played (100) and starts (55). 4Green has been the team s leading returning scorer each of the last two seasons. He led the squad with an 11.2-point average, while his 9.9-point average last season trailed only graduated seniors Hank Thorns (13.5 ppg) and J.R. Cadot (11.4 ppg). 4Green needs only 137 points to become the 31st member of TCU s 1,000-point club. A NEW AND IMPROVED JARVIS Jarvis Ray appears to be experiencing a breakout season for the Frogs in his third season with the program. He returned to the lineup this fall after sitting out the second half of last season. 4Ray ranks second on the team in scoring average (10.7 ppg), is tied for No. 2 in assists (2.3 apg) and No. 3 in shooting percentage (56.5%). 4Ray s 32 total points are only 30 shy of the total he had scored for his entire career entering this season (62 points). 4Ray has reached double figures in points in back-to-back games, including a career-high 14 points vs. SMU. He had scored 10 points or more just one time in his career prior to the current stretch. 4It hasn t just been Ray s offensive efforts that have helped TCU this season. He also leads the squad having drawn four opponent charge fouls, double that of an other Frog. MCKINNEY STEPPING UP DOWN LOW Like Ray, Adrick McKinney looks virtually like an entirely different player on the offensive end of the court early on this season for TCU. 4McKinney leads TCU in shooting rate (68.8%), is tied for No. 3 in rebounding (3.7 rpg) and is No. 4 in scoring (8.3 ppg). 4McKinney led TCU with 16 points, one shy of his career, high, during the Nov. 12 win over Centenary. 4While McKinney did make 16 starts a season ago, he shot only 42.1% from the field down low while averaging 5.5 ppg. 5 BUTLER LIND RAISES HIS GAME Nate Butler Lind has taken on a greater role in TCU s offensive attack this season after averaging just 2.6 ppg last season as a first-year junior. 4Butler Lind is taking his shot much more often this season, firing an average of 6.0 spg compared to just 3.0 last season. 4Butler Lind has scored at least four points in all three games this season, a figure he reached only nine times in 33 contests as a junior. He matched a career high with 10 points in TCU s Nov. 15 home loss to SMU. 4Butler Lind has proven to be an important player on the court for coach Trent Johnson, leading the team in minutes played (30.0 mpg) despite coming off the bench each game. INJURY STATUS TCU has suffered a pair of major injuries so far this season, one to an experienced veteran in Amric Fields and the other to newcomer Aaron Durley. 4Fields suffered what appeared to be a significant knee injury just 12 seconds into TCU s home matchup with SMU in the third game of the season. The injury happened on a noncontact play in which he caught the ball running across the lane and attempted to make a cut. His status for the remainder of this season is still uncertain at this point. 4Aaron Durley also suffered a major knee injury on another non-contact play in preseason workouts, experiencing the setback after coming down with a rebound. Durley underwent surgery and will redshirt this season. A GLANCE BACK AT TCU will try to build off its most successful season in several years, as the Horned Frogs overall record marked the program s first winning season since (21-14). 4TCU s 18 victories were four more than in any season since TCU finished fifth in the Mountain West with a 7-7 league record. The wins total matched the team s most conference victories in its seven MW seasons despite playing two fewer league games (14) than in previous years (16). 4The Frogs CBI appearance marked the program s first national postseason tournament bid since an NIT quarterfinals run in The 14-3 home record matched the program s best since a 15-1 mark in TCU posted two victories over ranked opponents in games vs. No. 11 UNLV and No. 18 New Mexico. It marked the first time in program history the Frogs defeated two top-20 foes in a single season. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES 4TCU has connected on at least one 3-pointer in 441 consecutive games dating back to the campaign. The last time the Frogs failed to connect on a trey came against LIU-Brooklyn on November 22, TCU has connected on at least one 3-pointer in 657 of its last 658 games. Prior to a failed connection against LIU-Brooklyn, TCU made at least one trey in 217 consecutive games dating back to Feb. 11, 1990, when Texas held the Frogs without one. 4The Frogs have posted an all-time record of (.426) in overtime games and (.547) in overtime games at Daniel- Meyer Coliseum. TCU is a combined 4-0 in games that last past two overtimes in its history. HOME SWEET HOME AT THE DMC TCU has notched 442 triumphs in the 50-year history of Daniel- Meyer Coliseum and has posted a winning percentage of.630 ( ) on its home court. 4Over the past 16 seasons, the Frogs have accumulated a (.688) overall record at the DMC while posting at least 10 home victories on 12 occasions. 4The squad is 16-4 at home dating back to the start of the season. JOHNSON TAKES PROGRAM REIGNS New head coach Trent Johnson brings an impressive resume with him to TCU, having served previous stints as head coach at Nevada ( ), Stanford ( ) and LSU ( ). 4Johnson owns a career record (.551) and has posted winning marks in each of his three head coaching stops at Nevada (79-74), Stanford (80-47) and LSU (67-64). 4Johnson has been named coach of the year in each of the three leagues in which he has worked: the WAC (2003), Pac-10 (2008) and SEC (2009). 4Johnson has guided teams to eight postseason tournament appearances in his 13 seasons, including five NCAA Tournament bids. He led both Nevada (2004) and Stanford (2008) to the Sweet 16. 4Johnson has a history of producing talented players. Two of his pupils (Kirk Snyder-2004 Nevada; Marcus Thornton-2009 LSU) were named conference player of the year. He has seen nine players reach the NBA during his head coaching career. 4TCU fans may remember Johnson from his time as head coach at Nevada, which the Frogs shared WAC membership with during the season. TCU was 2-0 against Johnson s Wolf Pack team during his second year in Reno. RETURNING AWARD WINNERS Two returning players on this year s team, sophomore point guard Kyan Anderson and junior forward Amric Fields, garnered conference awards in the Frogs final season as a member of the Mountain West. 4Anderson became the fourth Frog to be named league freshman of the year after leading all Mountain West freshmen in scoring average (9.8 ppg), assists (3.07 apg), assist/turnover ratio (1.48) and minutes (34.64 mpg) during league action. 4Anderson s honor made him the first Frog freshman of the year since Damion Walker earned the Southwest Conference award in Anderson s 22 starts were the most for a TCU freshman since Femi Ibikunle totaled 28 in , while his 90 assists were the most since Corey Santee s 180 in Fields became TCU s first-ever conference sixth man of the year after leading all MW bench players (five starts or fewer) in scoring (9.6 ppg). He was the only bench player among the MW s top-20 scorers, tying for 20th. 4Fields 565 career points and 69 games played rank second on the team behind only senior Garlon Green. TCU S RECORD WHEN... 13 GAME-BY-GAME RECAPS TCU 53, CAL POLY 46 Fort Worth, Texas (Daniel-Meyer Coliseum) Nov. 9, 2012 FORT WORTH TCU s new era in men s basketball started just as planned, with the Frogs giving new head coach Trent Johnson a victory in his first game on campus, 53-46, over Cal Poly. TCU regrouped from a slow offensive start to hold off the Mustangs, who lead for nearly the entire first half and by as many as five in the frame. The Frogs went 6-of-9 from the floor to open the second half to move ahead by eight, and Kyan Anderson sank a late 3-pointer with 1:20 remaining to seal the win. TCU won its season opener for the seventh consecutive season and for the 13th time in the last 14 years. Johnson became the sixth straight head coach to start off his Frog tenure with a victory. GAME NOTES 4TCU s 53 points marked its fewest in a victory since a win vs. Tulane on Dec. 9, Amric Fields led the Frogs with 16 points, his 27th career double-figure effort. 4Garlon Green, who totaled 10 points, scored in double figures for the third straight game dating back to last season and the 48th time in his career overall. 4Kyan Anderson matched a career high with three 3-pointers on five attempts while finishing with 13 points, all in the second half. 4Two players made their TCU debuts: Devonta Abron and Clyde Smith III. SMU 64, TCU 61 Fort Worth, Texas (Daniel-Meyer Coliseum) Nov. 15, 2012 FORT WORTH TCU s attempt at a late rally fell short, as SMU slipped out of Daniel-Meyer Coliseum with a victory over the Horned Frogs. Garlon Green scored 20 points to lead the Frogs after the squad lost Amric Fields to a knee injury early. TCU trailed for the entire game and by as many as 11 points midway through the second half before making a run at SMU. The squad posted a 13-5 spurt thanks in part to three Green field goals to cut the deficit to only three points, 54-51, with 4:27 remaining. SMU remained in front by turning up the defensive effort, holding TCU to only three buckets down the stretch. TCU did have one last opportunity, getting the ball back with under seven seconds left following four straight missed SMU free throws. Kyan Anderson s last-second 3-point shot to tie the game was blocked by guard Ryan Manuel just prior to the final buzzer as the Mustangs prevailed. GAME NOTES 4Garlon Green led TCU in scoring for the ninth time in his career and the first time this season with 20 points, his fourth career 20-point effort. 4Jarvis Ray set a new career scoring high with 14 points. He also drew three SMU offensive fouls in the second half alone. 4Nate Butler matched his career scoring high previously set in last season s home CBI Tournament win over Milwaukee with 10 points. 4Kyan Anderson tied a career high with eight assists.
