It was the second league honor for the freshman, who was named Co-Freshman of the Week (Nov. 27) after averaging 9.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks during the PK Invitational. Top-Ten Wins Michigan State beat a pair of Top-10 teams by 18 points in the span of a week No. 9 North Carolina (Nov. 26, 63-45) and No. 5 Notre Dame (Nov. 30, 81-63)... It marked the sixth and seventh time the Spartans have beaten a Top 10 team by 18 or more points during the Tom Izzo era (1/21/98 vs. No. 10 Iowa; 2/5/2000 vs. No. 7 UConn; 3/23/2003 vs. No. 10 Florida; 3/11/2011 vs. No. 9 Purdue, 2/12/2013 vs. No. 4 Michigan)... MSU won all six games during that stretch in the midst of a 14-game win streak that ended in a loss at Ohio State (Jan. 7)... Winston Named MVP of the PK80 Invitational Sophomore Cassius Winston was named the Most Valuable Player of the PK80 Invitational after helping lead MSU to the Victory Bracket championship, averaging 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.7 assists in three games... Winston scored a career-high 28 points in the win over UCONN in the second round. Defense Wins Championships One of the staples of Michigan State s win in the PK80 Invitational Victory Bracket was the team s defensive performance, limiting all three opponents to less than 40 percent shooting from the field in each game... In the championship game win over North Carolina, MSU held the Tar Heels to 24.6 percent shooting from the field, the lowest in program history for UNC... The 45 points scored by the Tar Heels were the second-lowest output by a Roy Williams-coached team at UNC... Overall in the PK80 Invitational, MSU s three opponents shot 31.9 percent from the floor (36-of-113) on 2-pointers and 21.4 percent (12-of- 56) on 3-pointers. Double Trouble Jaren Jackson Jr. registered his fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds against Southern Utah... Margins of Victory Michigan State s 18-point margin of victory over then-no. 9 North Carolina (63-45) was its largest over a ranked opponent since Jan. 11, 2017 (65-47 vs. No. 24 Minnesota) and its largest over a top-10 team since Feb. 12, 2013 (75-52 vs. No. 4 Michigan)... Michigan State Makes Plans to Honor Jud Heathcote The Michigan State athletic department will pay tribute to former coach Jud Heathcote in a variety of ways both in the near future and throughout the season... Heathcote passed away on Monday, August 28 at the age of The men s basketball team will wear a patch honoring Coach Heathcote throughout the season... The Michigan State-Purdue men s basketball game on Feb. 10 in East Lansing will be the Jud Heathcote Tribute Game... Bridges Preseason Honors Sophomore Miles Bridges has received numerous preseason accolades heading into the season...
