2 2004 SEASON A NOTES GENERAL PREVIEW COACHES/STAFF PLAYERS REVIEW OPPONENTS HISTORY Overall Record: 28-3 Pacific-10 Record: 16-2, conference champions NCAA Tournament: 4-1, national semifinal FINAL FOUR: The Washington volleyball team advanced to its first Final Four where it fell to eventual NCAA Champion Stanford, 3-1, in the national semifinal. Brie Hagerty led Washington with 21 kills and a.367 attack percentage against the Cardinal, while Sanja Tomasevic pounded 20 kills to go with 22 digs and seven blocks. Darla Myhre chipped in a matchhigh 13 blocks, in addition to eight kills. Kaitlin Leck was credited with 11 kills and six blocks for the Huskies, while Courtney Thompson dished out 60 assists in the match. Candace Lee provided the Husky defense a spark with 34 digs. Washington held a block advantage. UW IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: The Huskies have made nine appearances in the NCAA Tournament (1986, 1988, 1989, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2002, 2003, 2004) and have an all-time mark of UW is 10-1 in postseason matches played in Seattle. Washington s Final Four appearance marked UW s best finish in program history. It s previous best finish included Elite Eight appearance in 1988 and UW DEFEATS UCLA IN REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Before a crowd of 4,532 at Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion, the Huskies rallied in the deciding fifth game to defeat UCLA by scores of 27-30, 30-19, 30-28, 24-30, After dropping game one, the Huskies looked to be in control when they won games two and three and led 12-3 in game four before UCLA stagged a remarkable comeback. The Bruins went on a 12-3 run to tie the match at and then pulled ahead before tying the match at two games apiece. In the fifth game, UCLA led 8-6 before the Huskies scored six points behind the powerful arm of Brie Hagerty. Hagerty was named to the Regional All-Tournament team, as were Courtney Thompson and MVP Sanja Tomasevic. Tomasevic led all players with 24 kills, while Hagerty added 23. Thompson had 67 assists and 21 digs on the night. HUSKIES DEFEAT SAINT MARY S IN REGIONAL SEMIFINAL: Washington defeated Saint Mary s in the Regional Semifinal to advance to the Elite Eight for the third time in the program s history and for the second year in a row. The Huskies defeated the Gaels 30-20, 30-20, and were led by Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and Pacific Region Freshman of the Year Christal Morrison. Morrison, who was making her first start since tearing her meniscus on Dec. 1, led all players with 19 kills, while hitting.439. Senior Kaitlin Leck and junior Sanja Tomasevic added 15 and 14 kills, respectively. HUSKIES DEFEAT IDAHO/KANSAS IN OPEN- ING ROUNDS: The Huskies defeated Idaho (3-0) and Kansas (3-2) in the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament to advance to the Sweet 16. Sanja Tomasevic led Washington with 5.00 kpg and 5.12 dpg. The Huskies also received strong play from Brie Hagerty (4.62 kpg), Kaitlin Leck (3.38 kpg, 1.88 bpg) and Candace Lee (5.38 dpg). WINNING WAYS: Washington finished the season with a 28-3 record and boasted its second-most wins in school history. UW also won 28 matches in 1977 Washington broke the program s attendace record on Oct. 23 when 5,712 fans packed Bank of America Arena to see the Huskies sweep Stanford 3-0. UW had the highest attendance average in the Pac-10 last season and ranked fifth in the nation with 3,211 fans per game. (28-2) and 1980 (28-12) and was in The Huskies.903 winning percentage fell just shy of the 1977 squad that finished the year with a.933 winning percentage. MCLAUGHLIN NAMED NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR: Jim McLaughlin was voted Tachikara/ American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Coach of the Year. McLaughlin led Washington to its first-ever Pacific-10 Conference title with a 16-2 record, garnered Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors for the second time in three years and picked up the Region Coach of the Year award. The Huskies opened 2004 with a school-record 22-match win streak, and their only losses headed into the Final Four were fivegame setbacks to Southern California and Stanford. Washington was ranked as the top team in the USA Today/CSTV Top 25 Coaches Poll for a seven-week period and never fell below seventh place in McLaughlin and the Huskies worked around an injury to returning AVCA All-American Sanja Tomasevic, who missed five weeks of the 2004 season and returned just prior to the NCAA Tournament. McLaughlin boasts a career record over eight seasons as a women s head coach, including an mark in four years at Washington. UW PLACES THREE ON ALL-AMERICA TEAMS: Three Washington volleyball players received All-America honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Sophomore setter Courtney Thompson was a first team selection, while freshman outside hitter Christal Morrison was named to the second team and junior libero Candace Lee was an honorable mention pick. Thompson becomes Washington's seventh first team All-American after ranking third in the nation with assists per game and setting the UW record with 1,643 assists. Morrison is Washington's first-ever freshman to earn All-America honors. She was the Pacific Region Freshman of the Year and Pac-10 Freshman of the Year after ranking second in the conference with 4.21 kills per game and 4.79 points per game. Lee earned honorable mention accolades after leading the Pac-10 and ranking 13th in the nation with 5.95 digs per game. Lee's 666 digs were also a UW record. LEE & THOMPSON EARN ACADEMIC ALL- AMERICA AWARDS: Junior libero Candace Lee and sophomore setter Courtney Thompson were both named to the 2004 ESPN The Magazine Academic All- America Women's Volleyball Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Lee and Thompson become Washington's second and third-ever recipients of an Academic All- America award. Paige Benjamin was a 2002 Verizon Academic All-American second team honoree. WASHINGTON WINS FIRST PAC-10 TITLE: With a 3-1 victory over No. 16 UCLA on Nov. 27, Washington won its first-ever Pac-10 Championship. The Huskies won the Pac-10 with a 16-2 mark, edging out second place Stanford who finished one match back with a 15-3 record. With the conference title, Washington received the league s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. UW RANKED NO. 3 IN FINAL AVCA POLL: The Huskies were ranked third in the final USA Today/ CSTV Top 25 poll released on Dec. 22. Washington, who held the No. 1 ranking for seven weeks during the season, received 1,474 points in the poll to fall just behind No. 1 Stanford (1,625 points) and No. 2 Minnesota (1,557 points). UW volleyball is just the sixth Washington program to hold top-billing. Other Husky programs to hold the coveted top ranking include football (last on ), softball (last on ), men s soccer (last on ), women s crew (last on ) and men s crew (last on ). UW TALLIES BEST PAC-10 RECORD EVER: Washington finished the Pac-10 season with a 16-2 record, marking the most conference wins by UW in a single season. Washington s previous best conference record was 13-5, set in 1988 and again in 1997, when the teams placed second in the Pac-10. In 1988, Washington Volleyball Media Guide

3 2004 SEASON A NOTES Washington advanced to its first Elite Eight, while the 1997 squad made it to the Sweet 16. HOME SWEET HOME: The Huskies were 12-1 at home in 2004, winning nine of those matches in straight 3-0 sets. Washington lost three games to USC on Nov. 27 in its only home loss of the season and one game to UCLA on Nov. 28 in the Pac-10 finale. Washington dropped two games to Kansas and two games to UCLA in the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies held a game advantage in Bank of America Arena. FOUR EARN ALL-PACIFIC REGION RECOGNI- TION: The Washington volleyball team had four players named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Pacific Region teams, including first team selections Candace Lee, Christal Morrison and Courtney Thompson. Brie Hagerty was named to the honorable mention team. Morrison was also named the Pacific Region Freshman of the Year. THREE HUSKIES RECEIVE ACADEMIC ALL- DISTRICT HONORS: The Washington volleyball team placed three players on the Academic All-District VIII University Division Volleyball Team. Junior outside hitter Sanja Tomasevic, junior libero Candace Lee and sophomore setter Courtney Thompson were named to the seven-member first team. Tomasevic, who was a second team Academic All-District selection last year, owns a 3.34 cumulative grade point average in Communications. Lee boasts a 3.78 grade point average in English with a minor in Italian, while Thompson has achieved a 3.63 grade point average in Business. JIM MCLAUGHLIN NAMED PAC-10 COACH OF THE YEAR: Washington head volleyball coach Jim McLaughlin was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year for the second time in three years after guiding the Huskies to their first ever Pac-10 Championship (16-2) and No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament. CHRISTAL MORRISON NAMED PAC-10 FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Christal Morrison, an outside hitter from Puyallup, Wash., was named Pac- 10 Freshman of the Year after ranking second in the conference with 4.10 kills per game and 4.67 points per game. She earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors and was named to the Northwest Classic and Green Mill Classic all-tournament teams. Morrison is Washington s first ever Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. FIVE HUSKIES NAMED TO ALL-PAC-10 TEAMS: Five Huskies were named to the All-Pac-10 teams, including first team members Brie Hagerty, Candace Lee, Christal Morrison and Courtney Thompson and honorable mention selection Darla Myhre. The five honorees tie the 2003 season for the most Huskies named to the All-Pac-10 teams. Washington has had 22 players receive all-conference honors since FIVE PLAYERS NAMED TO PAC-10 ALL- ACADEMIC TEAMS: Five Washington players earned Pac-10 All-Academic honors, including first team selection Candace Lee. Courtney Thompson and Sanja Tomasevic were second team picks and Kaitlin Leck and Danka Danicic were named to the honorable mention team. RECORD ATTENDANCE: The Huskies broke the school s home attendance record twice in UW first broke the record on Oct. 8 vs. Washington State with 3,673 fans, topping the previous record of 3,203 set last season vs. the Cougars. Washington shattered the record two weeks later, pulling in 5,712 fans vs. Stanford on Oct. 23, marking the fourth-highest attendance figure in Pac-10 history. UW pulled 41,738 fans through its doors in 13 home matches for an average of 3,211 fans per match. Washington had the highest attendance average in the Pacific-10 Conference and ranked fifth in the nation. TOMASEVIC MAKES HER COMEBACK: Junior All-American Sanja Tomasevic made her first start since breaking her hand on Oct. 14 against USC on Nov. 26. Tomasevic led the Huskies with 20 kills and 30 digs against USC. She followed up with 22 kills and 20 digs against UCLA on Nov. 27. She was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for her performances. LEE SETS CAREER & SEASON DIG RECORDS: Junior libero Candace Lee became the all-time digs leader at Washington against Arizona on Nov. 11, picking up 16 digs to surpass Lisa McCammond s 1,237 digs set from She surpassed her own singleseason record on Nov. 27 with her 368th dig vs. USC. Lee finished the season with 666 digs and 1,508 in her career, which ranks fourth on the all-time Pac-10 list. MCLAUGHLIN GETS 300TH CAREER WIN: Head coach Jim McLaughlin tallied his 300th career win as a Division I coach (including stints with both men s and women s teams) with a 3-0 sweep over Arizona State on Nov. 12. His career record as a women s coach is (eight seasons) and he is at Washington (four seasons). UW SHUTS THEM OUT: Washington tallied 3-0 victories in 19 of 31 matches. Washington held the edge in game victories over its opponents in ,000-ASSIST CLUB: With 3,233 career assists sophomore setter Courtney Thompson is just the third Husky to join the 3,000-assists club. She ranks third on the UW all-time career list, while her 1,643 assists in 2004 surpassed her own school record of 1,590 assists set in ,000-KILL CLUB: With 18 kills against Butler on Sept. 3, Sanja Tomasevic became just the 11th player in Husky history to tally 1,000 career kills. She has 1,318 career kills to rank third on the UW all-time career list.
