BEACH CONCLUDES SECOND-STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASON AT 24-9 Last year, the Long Beach State women's basketball team had one of the best campaigns in recent history as it recorded its first 20-win season in 5 years (22-0). The Beach proved that wasn't a fluke as it con nued to build on its success in 205-6, where it went 24-9 overall, ed for second in the Big West and made its second-straight WNIT appearance. LBSU's 24 victories were its most since QUICK HITS Long Beach State made its fourth WNIT appearance and third in the last four years. The Beach ed for second in the Big West regular-season standings, its best finish in 0 years. LBSU's 2 league wins were also the most since it went 3-5 in The 49ers swept six of their eight conference opponents with their only losses coming to Hawai'i and UCR. Long Beach State's 24 victories were its most in a season since going 24-8 in The Beach ranked first in the Big West and 0th in the country with 2.2 turnovers forced per game. LBSU forced 20 or more turnovers in 2 of its last 6 ou ngs. The 49ers are two victories away from the program's 900th win. BEACH PLACES THREE ON ALL-BIG WEST TEAM Long Beach State had three players named to the All-Big West Women's Basketball Team. Junior Raven Benton was a first-team selec on, while classmates Anna Kim and Jewelyn Sawyer garnered honorable men on recogni on. Sawyer was also tabbed the Big West Defensive Player of the Year, marking the third me in program history, and first since 2003, a 49er has won the award. WNIT RECAP The Beach put up a fight but Pac-2 member Oregon was able to pull away late as the 49ers dropped an decision in the first round of the WNIT at Ma hew Knight Arena on March 7. "We've won more games than we ever have with our staff in the last seven years," head coach Jody Wynn said. "I'm so proud of all of our players and how they've ba led and been resilient all season long." LBSU shot 45.2 percent from the field, but the Ducks were slightly be er at 50.9 percent and got hot from beyond the arc where they were 4-of-30. Long Beach s ll forced Oregon into 20 turnovers, marking the 2st me the 49ers pressured their opponent into at least 20 miscues. Junior Raven Benton led Long Beach State with 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. It was her second-straight 20-point game and the 2th of her career. Junior Anna Kim and sophomore Gigi Hascheff added 2 points each, while sophomore Jessica Gertz finished with, matching her career high with three 3-pointers. A er the Mustangs sank a pair of free throws to e it up at with 9 seconds remaining, the Beach called a meout and advanced the ball to the front court. With the me winding down, Benton got open and junior Jewelyn Sawyer found her for a buzzer-bea ng 8-foot jumper. Benton finished the night with points, while junior Anna Kim had a team-high 5 points to go along with six rebounds. LBSU moved on to the semifinals for the first me since 202, but was unable to get past eventual champion Hawai'i as the 49ers fell, Benton led all players with 27 points and was named to the Big West All- Tournament Team. Sawyer added 0 points, while junior Madison Montgomery finished with eight points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks. HARD TO BEAT The Beach was hard to beat this year, finishing with a.727 win percentage, its best mark since going 24-8 (.750) in The 49ers' nine losses came to only six teams. Three of those setbacks were to Big West Tournament champion and NCAA Tournament par cipant Hawai'i, while two came at the hands of undefeated Big West regular season champion UC Riverside. The Beach also fell to West Coast Conference Tournament champion San Francisco, SEC member LSU and Pac-2 schools USC and Oregon (WNIT semifinalists).,000 AND COUNTING Raven Benton surpassed,000 career points in a 6-56 win at Cal Poly on Feb. 24, and went on to increase her total to,2, which puts her at No. 8 on LBSU's all- me scoring list. She was the 24th player in program history, and the fourth in head coach Jody Wynn's tenure, to reach the milestone. The Tacoma, Wash., na ve needed only 83 games to accomplish the feat, making her the 2th-fastest 49er to hit,000. Benton also has 463 career rebounds, giving her a chance to become Long Beach State's 3th player in the elite,000-point and 500-rebound club. BEACH FOR THREE Long Beach State ranked first in the Big West with 25 3-pointers made. Every 49er connected from long distance with nine hi ng at least 0 triples, including team leaders Jessica Gertz (42) and Raven Benton (36). The Beach made at least five threes in 24 games and went off for a Big West-record 20 at Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 9. Their 20 3-pointers also sha ered the previous program record of 3, which they established earlier in the year vs. Portland State (Nov. 5). Nine of LBSU s players drained a shot from behind the arc with seven making mul ple treys against the Titans. SCORING MACHINE Raven Benton, who averaged a team-best 3.5 points per ou ng, reached double digits in scoring 23 mes this season and 57 mes in her career. The first-team All-Big West selec on ne ed a career-high 3 in a nonconference win over UNLV on Dec. 20, marking LBSU's first 30-point performance in five years. Benton also finished with 27 at CSUN, 27 vs. Hawai'i in the Big West Tournament, 23 in a regular-season mee ng with the Rainbow Wahine, 22 vs. Cal State Fullerton and 22 at Oregon. She now has 2 career games with 20 or more points. BENTON ON FIRE A er making just seven of her first 37 3-point field goal a empts (8.9 percent), Raven Benton turned the corner vs. UTEP on Dec. 8, when she drained a couple of threes. She proceeded to connect for 29 of her 36 triples and shot 39.7 percent (29-73) from beyond the arc over the remainder of the season. Benton made a career-high five 3-pointers at Fullerton on Jan. 9. She also ranks fourth in school history with 348 career free throws made and etched her name in the single-game record books with a 5-for-20 performance from the charity stripe at CSUN on March 5. Her 5 FTs are ed for third and the 20 a empted are ed for second. SHE CAN DISH IT TOO Benton has been the leading scorer in each of her three years at Long Beach State, but this season she was also tops on the team with 82 assists (2.5 apg). She more than doubled her previous single-season best of 35, which she established as a sophomore. Benton dished out at least three helpers 4 mes, including a careerhigh nine in a win at UC Davis. SWAT TEAM Junior Madison Montgomery (Englewood, Colo.) ed for fi h in the Big West with. blocks per contest. She had a streak of eight games with at least one block from Dec. 3-Jan. 9, and led the team with 37 total blocked shots. Montgomery, who recorded mul ple blocks 2 mes this year, finished with a season-high three at Pacific, at Denver and vs. Hawai i. The 6-foot- forward also averaged a career-best 8.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per ou ng. This season, Montgomery posted career highs of 22 points at CSUN, 3 rebounds at Pacific and five assists at Sea le U. She added points against the Tigers for her third career double-double.

3 @beachwbb PAGE 3 JEWELYN SHINES Junior Jewelyn Sawyer emerged as one of Long Beach State s top players in Sawyer reached double figures in scoring 4 mes, led the Beach in rebounding on 6 occasions, and accounted for three of LBSU s five double-doubles. On the season, Sawyer registered 9.0 points and a team-best 6.0 rebounds per game, marking a significant improvement from her first two years where she averaged 3.5 points and 3.9 boards. Sawyer started her breakout campaign by ne ng a career-high 20 points against San Diego State. She was the first 49er to hit 20 in a season opener since Karina Figueroa (23) and Lauren Sims (20) both accomplished the feat in The Paramount, Calif., na ve later matched her career best with 20 points at USC, while also finishing with 6 at Sea le and UC Davis. In addi on, Sawyer finished second on the team with 47 steals. The 206 Big West Defensive Player of the Year had a steal in all but one of the 4 conference games in which she played, and totaled a career-high five takeaways in both mee ngs with Cal Poly. BACK ON TRACK Junior Anna Kim started the season making 66.7 percent (6-of-9) of her 3-point a empts, including a perfect 4-for-4 performance from long distance at Houston on Nov. 9. In the following game at LSU, Kim suffered an elbow injury that affected her shot as she went 2-of-9 from behind the arc over the next nine ou ngs. The Fullerton, Calif., na ve got back on track with a three at Denver (Dec. 28), marking her first triple since Nov. 27. She con nued to roll at Sea le U with two threes and 5 points, and went on to make four of her five 3-point a empts for a season-best 8 points at UC Davis. Kim ended up making 23 treys over the final 20 games. She ranks eighth in school history with a career 3-point field goal percentage of 36.. The All-Big West honorable men on selec on also led the team with 5 steals and was second with 72 assists. AT THE LINE Sophomore Jessica Gertz made the first 20 free throws of her young 49er career and was 6-of-6 this season before her first miss in the second quarter of a victory over Cal State Fullerton (Jan. 20). Gertz - who is now an 84.8 percent career free-throw shooter (28-for-33) - had two games with at least five FTs made, going 5-for-5 in a win over Northwestern State and 7-for-7 in a road victory at UC Irvine. The Oregon City, Ore., na ve finished with a then career-high 3 points against the Anteaters before topping that performance with 4 points vs. UC Davis. Gertz was also sharp from the perimeter as she led the team with 42 3-pointers. She made eight of her final a empts from behind the arc and had a streak of 0-straight games with a three snapped in the Big West semifinals on March as she did not take a shot in 0 minutes played against Hawai'i. OFF THE BENCH Long Beach State scored more than 20 bench points 6 mes this year. Against UC Riverside (Jan. 3), LBSU's second unit registered a season-high 42 points. Leading the way was sophomore Gigi Hascheff, who a er missing the first four games with an ankle injury, became a consistent force for the 49ers. She reached double figures in scoring seven mes, including a season-best 6 points on a 5-for-8 shoo ng performance (4-of-5 3FG) at UC Davis. In addi on, the versa le 5-foot-7 guard pulled down at least three rebounds on 5 occasions. Hascheff averaged 6.2 points, 2.7 boards and.8 assists per game. HELLO, MS. JACKSON Freshman Chanterria Jackson (McKinney, Texas) made an immediate impact in her first year at Long Beach State. The 6-foot- forward started her collegiate career by making nine-straight field goals, before her first career miss with 28 seconds le in the second quarter vs. Portland State on Nov. 5. She kept up her efficiency, leading the Beach on the season in field goal percentage (55.) and 3-point field goal percentage (43.5). Jackson, who had seven double-figure scoring games, converted on two four-point plays and finished with a season-best 7 points in 7 minutes against UC Riverside on Jan. 3. TURNOVER TREND Long Beach State led the Big West and ranked 0th in the na on with 70 turnovers forced (2.2/game). The 49ers pressured 2 teams into 20 or more turnovers this season, including Portland State, which commi ed a season-high 30 miscues. LBSU also wreaked havoc on Oregon (20), Hawai'i (2), San Diego State (2), UC Davis (2/23), Colorado (22), Denver (23), UC Santa Barbara (23), Houston (24), UC Irvine (24/25), LSU (26), UTEP (26), Northern Arizona (27), Cal State Fullerton (27/23), CSUN (27/23) and Cal Poly (29/23). Since head coach Jody Wynn s first year at the helm of the program in , the Beach has forced 9.2 turnovers per game. DEFENSIVE MINDED The Beach allowed more than 60 points only 5 mes this season, and gave up more than 70 six mes, one of which was an over me game. Six of Long Beach State's adversaries failed to reach the 50-point mark, including Pac-2 member Colorado (42) and previously unbeaten UTEP (40). Both of those teams hit 90 at least once this year and averaged 6.9 and 7. points per game, respec vely. One of UTEP's five losses on the season came at the Beach on Dec. 8. Against Portland State, they scored a season-best 39 points in the first period, which is ed for the third-most in a quarter by an NCAA Division I team. Central Michigan had the top scoring quarter with 45 in the first frame of a win at Oakland on Nov. 5, while UConn finished with 4 against Robert Morris in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Beach also trailed at the half 7 mes this year and on eight occasions responded with a big second half to spark a comeback win. TWENTY-TWENTY LBSU picked up its 20th win of the season at Cal Poly on Feb. 24, marking the 49ers' first back-to-back 20-win campaigns since and Over the last two years, they own an impressive 46-9 record (.708). STARTING FIVE The Beach used only five different star ng lineups this season. Anna Kim started every game, while Madison Montgomery earned the nod in 32 of LBSU's 33 contests. Jewelyn Sawyer (30), Raven Benton (28), Cecily Wilson (23) and Chantel Dooley (7) also made mul ple starts. COMEBACK KIDS They didn't have to play catch-up very o en, but when the 49ers found themselves down, they were never out, coming back from a double-digit deficit five mes this year (LSU, Northwestern State, Sea le, UC Irvine and Cal Poly). Their biggest comefrom-behind win was against Northwestern State where they erased an 8-point deficit to emerge with a victory. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Raven Benton (Dec. 2) and Jewelyn Sawyer (Dec. 7) were both named the Big West Player of the Week this season. Benton was recognized for her effort at the Beach Classic where she averaged 22.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in wins over UTEP and UNLV. The 5-foot-0 guard, who was named the tournament MVP, scored a career-high 3 points on only 4 shot a empts in a victory against the Lady Rebels. She was 0-of-4 from the field, 2-of-3 from behind the arc and 9-of-0 from the free throw line. She also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds. Sawyer earned her first career Big West Player of the Week award a er leading the 49ers to wins against Pacific and Colorado. Over the two games, Sawyer averaged 4.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists, while shoo ng 84.6 percent (-for-3). She was a perfect 5-of-5 for a team-best 3 points in a victory at Pacific, which has made four-straight postseason appearances. Four days later, Sawyer went 6-for-8 from the floor to finish with a game-high 5 points in a rout of the Buffaloes. ROAD WARRIORS Long Beach State played eight preseason road games, six of which were out of state, and logged 9,089 flight miles in November and December. The 49ers were successful away from the Walter Pyramid where they went 5-2 (2-0 in neutralsite games). The Beach finished the year 0-5 in true away games. STRONG STARTS A er going 3- in non-conference play in 204-5, Long Beach State had another strong preseason at -3. That marks the best back-to-back 4-game starts since (2-2) and (3-). The Beach also had only one loss over its first eight games for the second-straight year. WYNN WINS Seventh-year head coach Jody Wynn (4-08) became the fourth coach in program history to join the century club with her 00th career victory coming at Denver on Dec. 28. The past four seasons have been especially produc ve for Wynn and the 49ers as they have won 79 games and earned three WNIT bids. BRINGING IT BACK Seventh-year head coach Jody Wynn has brought back the rich tradi on of Long Beach State women s basketball as she has led the Beach to three WNIT berths (203, 205 and 206) and seven-straight Big West Tournament appearances - with a run to the championship game in 202. The 49ers have also improved their win total in each of the last five seasons. In 204-5, LBSU had its first 20-win campaign in 5 years at The Beach then topped that in with 24 victories, its most since going 24-8 in PROTECT THE PYRAMID LBSU has been tough to beat at home in recent years. Since her arrival, LBSU has seen rapid improvements with two Women s Na onal Invita on Tournament (WNIT) bids and six-straight Big West Tournament appearances, including a run to the championship game in 202. Last year, Wynn led the Beach to one of its most memorable seasons in recent history. Not only did the 49ers reach 20 wins for the first me in 5 years, but their 22-0 overall record was also the program s best since Long Beach State turned heads in the preseason where it went 3-, which matched the best regular-season non-conference record in school history. The lone defeat came in the third game of the year and was a narrow five-point over me loss to USC. Following that setback, LBSU proceeded to go on a 5-game win streak, defea ng perennial na onal powerhouses Cal and LSU along the way. The Golden Bears were ranked 8th in the country at the me. The 49ers were recognized for their effort as they received votes in the Associated Press Women s Basketball Poll for threestraight weeks. They also made their way into the College Insider Mid-Major Top-25, climbing as high as No. 9 in January. The season culminated in Long Beach State s second WNIT berth in three years. Raven Benton and Hallie Meneses were both All-Big West selec ons with Benton being named to the second team and Meneses garnering honorable men on recogni on. In 203-4, Wynn guided the Beach to its first winning record in nine seasons, finishing with an overall mark of 7-5. Long Beach State also advanced to its fi h consecu ve Big West Tournament under Wynn s direc on. Lauren Spargo and Ella Clark garnered All-Big West honorable men on recogni on, while Raven Benton and Anna Kim were named to the conference s all-freshman team. In 202-3, Wynn put LBSU (6-6) back on the na onal stage with an at-large berth into the WNIT. It was the program s first na onal postseason tournament since The Beach ended up hos ng eventual runner-up Utah in the first round and dropped a narrow decision. Wynn had two players recognized by the conference with Devin Hudson and Alex Sanchez receiving All-Big West honors. Hudson was also selected to the Big West All-Tournament Team a er notching a conference tournament record 24 rebounds against Cal State Fullerton. In 20-2, the 49ers finished sixth in the conference, but found themselves one win away from earning an automa c bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the Big West Tournament, Long Beach State came back from a 9-point deficit on the road to defeat No. 2 seed CSUN in the first round before upending top-seeded Cal Poly, 5-48, in a semifinal match-up. LBSU eventually fell to UC Santa Barbara, 63-54, in its first championship appearance in years. Three 49ers were named to the all-tournament team, while Wynn also had two athletes, Tipesa Moorer and Alex Sanchez, garner All-Big West honors. In her first year at the Beach (2009-0), Wynn led a senior-laden squad to a fourth-place finish in conference play with a 9-7 record. They swept eventual Big West Tournament champion UC Riverside and defending Big West champion UCSB during the regular season. Long Beach State also defeated the Gauchos on their home floor for the first me in 9 years. Wynn saw three of her players earn All-Big West recogni on, including first-team selec on Karina Figueroa. In 200-, LBSU ba led through the loss of six le erwinners, including three starters, as it finished sixth in the Big West. Two players were named to the all-conference team, while the 49ers also claimed the Big West Freshman of the Year and the Big West Hustle Player of the Year awards. Wynn came to Long Beach State with 3 years of collegiate coaching experience under her belt. She spent five seasons as the senior assistant, recrui ng coordinator and head of scou ng at USC, where she was in charge of bringing in four na onally-ranked recrui ng classes, including the No. -ranked group in On the court, Wynn coached seven All-Pac-0 performers, a conference freshman of the year and a WNBA dra pick. In , Wynn helped the Trojans advance to their first-ever Pac-0 championship game, with five players garnering allleague honors.
