8 Season Preview The Holy Cross men s basketball team enters the season as one of the top contenders to win the Patriot League title. The Crusaders are coming off a season in which they posted an overall record of and placed third in the conference with a 12-6 mark in league games. Holy Cross won 20 games for the first time since , and also took part in postseason play for the first time in seven years by advancing to the second round of the College Insider Tournament. With all but one player returning from last year s squad, Holy Cross is expected to be one of the top teams in the league. One of our biggest strengths this year should be our depth, said head coach Milan Brown. We have a lot of players who bring good things to the table, so we are going to look to make depth a factor in our games. We should be able to consistently play with a very good tempo, while always keeping fresh players on the court. Defensively, we are going to look to make our opponents uncomfortable and force a lot of turnovers. On the offensive end, we will rely on a group of experienced perimeter players who can drive to the basket or hit outside shots. If we can accomplish those things, it should allow us to take the next step and challenge for a Patriot League championship. Here is a breakdown of how Holy Cross should look in Frontcourt Senior forward Malcolm Miller should be one of the top players in the conference, after earning third team All-Patriot League honors last season. Miller averaged 11.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and a team-best 1.9 blocked shots per game in , while seeing action at both small forward and power forward. He hit 76.2 percent (80 of 105) of his foul shots and 41.9 percent (39 of 93) of his attempts from three-point range last year, while leading the team in scoring 10 times and scoring in double-figures 17 times. Malcolm Miller is capable of challenging for Patriot League Player of the Year honors this season, said Brown. He is an outstanding twoway player who can do so many things on both ends of the court. He has the ability to make an impact on every play of the game. Sophomore forward Malachi Alexander is also expected to play an important role, after being the team s first big man off the bench in Alexander averaged 6.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game last year, including a 23-point, 13-rebound performance against Sacred Heart. Malachi Alexander is an extremely physical player with the ability to earn trips to the free throw line, said Brown. He worked very hard to improve his ball handling and shooting in the offseason, so we expect him to take a big step forward this year. Senior forward Taylor Abt is another player who should compete for a starting role along the front line. Abt averaged 2.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per game last year, while leading the team in field goal percentage by hitting 47.8 percent of his shots from the floor (32 of 67). Taylor Abt is going to be the anchor of our defense, said Brown. He has a great feel for what we do defensively, so we will get better on that end of the court by having him play more minutes. He also has the ability to hit three-pointers, and is a good offensive rebounder who can finish. Junior forward Christopher Morgan, junior forward Isaiah Baker and sophomore center Matt Husek are three other returnees who look to contend for key minutes at the low post positions. Morgan has totaled 29 points and 25 rebounds in 30 games played over the course of his Holy Cross career. Baker has recorded one point, eight rebounds and three blocked shots in 10 career games played, while Husek had one rebound and one assist in seven appearances last season. Christopher Morgan is a very athletic player, who can give us a boost off the bench with his energy level, said Brown. Isaiah Baker is What s Returning, What s Lost Returns in Lost in Percent Category Total Return Points Field Goals Made Field Goal Attempts Three-Point Goals Made Three-Point Attempts Free Throws Made Free Throw Attempts Rebounds Offensive Rebounds Defensive Rebounds Assists Turnovers Blocks Steals Personal Fouls Minutes Holy Cross Men s Basketball Fact Book

9 Season Preview a tough, physical player down low, who can help us with him rebounding ability. And Matt Husek is a skilled big man who is one of our best offensive players in the low post. Freshman forward Mitchell Hahn will also look to break into the rotation at forward this year. Hahn averaged 18.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game as a senior at Fremont High School, and was selected as the state Player of the Year by both Gatorade and the Nebraska Basketball Coaches Association. Mitchell Hahn is a very versatile player with good size, who can shoot and handle the ball, said Brown. Even though he is a freshman, we expect him to earn significant playing time. Senior walk-on forward Patrick Kerrigan will provide added depth for the Crusaders in the low post. Backcourt The Holy Cross backcourt will be led by senior guard Justin Burrell, who will be in the starting lineup for the fourth straight season. Burrell averaged 8.9 points, 2.4 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game last year, while splitting time between point guard and shooting guard. He led the team by hitting 83.0 percent of his free throws (44 of 53), in addition to knocking down 35.5 percent of his three-point field goals (43 of 121). It is huge for us to have an experienced guy like Justin Burrell in the backcourt, said Brown. He gives us great versatility with his ability to play both shooting guard and point guard. We think he can continue to make great strides this season. Sophomore guard Anthony Thompson will play a key role once again, after starting 21 games last year and earning a spot on the Patriot League All-Rookie team. Thompson averaged 9.4 points, 2.2 rebounds and a team-best 2.5 assists per game in He also hit 41.4 percent of his three-point field goals (41 of 99) and 78.5 percent of his free throws (117 of 149) on the year. We expect Anthony Thompson to run the show out on the floor this season, said Brown. He is an extremely fast player who can distribute the ball or create his own shot. We are confident that he will continue to improve his game this year. Junior guard Eric Green, one of the top defensive players in the Patriot League, looks to return to a starting spot on the wing. Green led the team with 58 steals last season, in addition to pulling down 4.0 rebounds per game. He also showed the ability to score, putting up 7.9 points per contest. Eric Green has the ability to be the best defensive player in the Patriot League, said Brown. He is a unique player who has the ability to impact the game without scoring. But he has also worked on his offensive game, and should be very strong on both ends of the court. Junior guard Cullen Hamilton is another player who will push for a starting spot or play a key role off the bench in the backcourt. Hamilton averaged 16.2 points per game and hit 41.2 percent (14 of 34) of his shots from three-point range in the first five contests last season, before being limited for the remainder of the year due to injury. We are excited to have Cullen Hamilton healthy again, said Brown. He is an outstanding outside shooter who can really stretch the defense and open up the middle for everyone else. He has also improved off the dribble and has the ability to make plays at the rim. Sophomore guard Robert Champion also looks to earn increased playing time in the backcourt. Champion averaged 2.6 points and 0.9 rebounds per game in 25 appearances last year. Robert Champion can really help us with his shooting ability, said Brown. He also has no problem being physical and has the ability to be a good rebounder. Senior walk-ons Chris Jayne and De Vaughn Reid will provide added depth in the backcourt. Schedule Once again this season, the Crusaders will face one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the Patriot League. Six of the 10 schools on the non-league schedule advanced to postseason play last year, including four NCAA Tournament teams and seven schools which posted winning records in The Crusaders non-conference slate is highlighted by a pair of road games against traditional Eastern powers Pittsburgh and Syracuse. Holy Cross will also face defending Ivy League champion Harvard at the TD Garden in Boston as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tripleheader, and will travel to defending America East Conference champion Albany. In addition, the non-league schedule will include home games against Brown, Hartford and New Jersey Tech, and road dates at Canisius and Sacred Heart. The Patriot League looks to be solid this season, with Holy Cross playing home-and-home series against each of the nine other teams in the league. The conference schedule will be highlighted by contests against 2014 Patriot League Tournament champion American and 2014 Patriot League regular season champion Boston University. We always try to challenge ourselves with a competitive schedule, said Brown.
