The Lopes look to get back to work on Saturday, as GCU faces UTRGV in a 6 p.m. (MT) contest at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. GCU is an even 1-1 in conference play, as CSU Bakersfield and NMSU are the only two undefeated teams. GCU, Seattle U, Utah Valley and Kansas City are all 1-1, while UTRGV and Chicago State are winless in conference play. LAST GAME'S STARTING FIVE GCU QUICK FIVE 1. The Lopes returned just six players from the roster, led by redshirt senior Jessica Gajewski, senior Brie Mobley, junior Casey Rarrick, sophomore Vanessa Murphy. GCU also brings back redshirt junior Katelyn Lee and redshirt senior August Touchard. 2. GCU held a five-game winning streak beginning on the road at NAU and ending with the four-game stretch against Southern Utah, Santa Clara, Arizona Chrisitan and Seattle. The Lopes fell at New Mexico State to end the run. 3. The Lopes have three players averaging double-digits, as Mobley leads with 19.4 points per game, while Gajewski is averaging 13.5 and Touchard is averaging Senior Brie Mobley leads the Lopes with 19.4 points per game over her 14 appearances this season. Mobley tops the GCU leaderboard in scoring and rebounding this year and has five double-doubles. 5. Senior Jessica Gajewski reached the 1,000-career points benchmark on Sunday at Bethune-Cookman behind a 16-point peformance. Mobley opened up the season with a 21-point outing in the exhibition victory over Embry-Riddle. Following 11 season withs various WNBA teams, Powell had a one-year stint at Gonzaga as an assistant coach before following head coach Kelly Graves to Oregon to serve as an assistant on his staff for the next three seasons. SENIOR STANDING Along with the trio of returning seniors in Brie Mobley, August Touchard and Jessica Gajewski, head coach Nicole Powell brought on redshirt senior transfer Jordan Jackson to complete the four-player senior class for the season. All four seniors, three redshirt and one true senior (Mobley) will likely see playing time this season, as they all earned a WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 3 starting spot in Tuesday's exhibition scrimmage with Embry-Riddle. Mobley was selected as a Preseason First Team All-WAC team member by both the media and the eight Western Athletic Conference member coaches. She had a strong showing in the exhibition scrimmage with the Eagles, leading the Lopes with 21 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for a near triple-double. Last season, Mobley competed in 17 games, starting 14. She had a field-goal average of.435 ( ) and a free-throw average of.806 (50-62). Jackson joins GCU from CSU Fullerton and will make an immediate impact on the court for the Lopes. Both Gajewski and Touchard contributed heavily for the Lopes last season, as Gajewski competed in 25 games, starting 12, and Touchard played in 24 contests, starting one. Gajewski averaged.427 (90-211) in shooting last season and.385 (50-130) from behind the arc. She was.903 (28-31) from the free-throw line as well. SCOUTING UTRGV UTRGV is 10-7 on the year and a winless 0-2 in Western Athletic Conference play, as the Vaqueros are currently on a three-game losing streak. UTRGV led the conference after non-conference play with a strong 10-5 record, but has yet to produce since beginning WAC competition. The Vaqueros started the season with a trio of wins over Concordia, Trinity and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before suffering their first loss to (RV) Oklahoma State. UTRGV then won three in a row again over Texas Lutheran, Florida A&M and Prairie View A&M before falling at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Vaqueros defeated UMass, UTSA and North Dakota State for a third three-game streak before losing to Wisconsin and Texas Tech in back-toback contests. The Vaqueros split a pair of games by defeating Canisius and losing to (RV) USC to close out non-conference play. UTRGV fell to both UMKC and CSU Bakersfield so far in WAC play. Last season, UTRGV was overall and 8-6 in conference competition. The Vaqueros lost in the first round of the WAC tournament to No. 5 UMKC, 77-69, but then were invited to play in the WBI, where they lasted two games. UP NEXT: GCU RETURNS HOME FOR THREE Following its only trip in the month of January, the Grand Canyon women's basketball team returns home for a three-game homestand beginning Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. (MT) at the GCU Arena against Chicago State. The Lopes then host Kansas City on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m., before closing out the month against CSU Bakersfield at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27. MIGHTY MOBLEY Senior Brie Mobley has proven to be a steady leader for the Lopes in all categories this season, as the guard has tallied four 20+ point performances and five double-doubles through 13 appearances this year. Mobley put up 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the GCU loss at Bethune-Cookman. She converted her second double-double against Long Beach State with 17 points and 11 rebounds, as well as a team-best seven assists. Her third double-double came at NAU where she had 14 points and 11 rebounds and her fourth came in a victory over Santa Clara, where she had 16 points and a season-best 13 boards. Her most recent was an 18-point, 11 board performance against Arizona Christian. Mobley has tallied double-digits in all 14 of her performances this season to hold an average of 19.4 points per game. She also leads the Lopes in rebounding (8.2 rpg) and ranks second in assists (3.6 apg). Mobley tallied a season-best total of 30 points in the Lopes WAC opener against Seattle U. The total was one point shy of her career-best 31 points that came one season ago against the Redhawks. TOUCHARD TAKES CHARGE Redshirt senior August Touchard led the Lopes in scoring for the first time this season, as the guard tallied 21 points for a season-high mark in Thursday's victory at Northern Arizona. Touchard came semi-close to her career-best of 27 points. Touchard converted 5-of-9 3-point attempts and 6-of-7 free throws to lead GCU to its third victory and second away from the GCU Arena. Touchard leads the Lopes in assists on the year (58) to average 3.6 a game.

3 THE POWELL FILE HEAD COACH First Season at Grand Canyon Alma Mater: Stanford Coaching Overall Conference Record W L W L GCU Career Totals COACHING LEDGER Grand Canyon (Head Coach) Oregon (Assistant Coach) Gonzaga (Assistant Coach) HEAD COACH PROFILE HEAD COACH NICOLE POWELL Nicole Powell was named the eighth head coach in GCU women's basketball program history on April 11, Powell joined the Lopes after three seasons as an assistant coach with the Oregon women s basketball team, which advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Women s Basketball Tournament, before falling to defending champion UConn. Powell worked with the Ducks forwards and wings as well as handling game plans and recruiting. Her recruiting efforts helped Oregon secure the No. 3 recruiting class in the country in The Ducks concluded the season ranked No. 16 in the country and a record, including six wins over Top 25 teams. Prior to joining the Ducks coaching staff, Powell spent the season with Graves at Gonzaga, her first in coaching. The Phoenix, Ariz., native retired from the WNBA following the 2014 season with the Seattle Storm, her 11th year in the league. After finishing her collegiate career at Stanford, Powell was the third overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft by the Charlotte Sting. In her impressive 11-year professional career, Powell won a WNBA Championship with the Sacramento Monarchs (2005), was named the WNBA s Most Improved Player (2005) and named a WNBA All-Star (2009). The forward also led the WNBA in three-point field goals made with 66 in 2005 and was first in free-throw percentage (96.4 percent) during the 2007 campaign and during the 2009 season (97.9 percent). Powell ended her career at Stanford in 2004 as a three-time All-American and a three-time finalist for the James Naismith Player of the Year Award. She scored over 2,000 points in her four years with the Cardinal while grabbing over 1,000 rebounds. Powell guided the Cardinal to the Elite Eight as a senior in and was named the MVP of the NCAA Tournament s Midwest Region. Powell began her collegiate career as the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year (2000) and was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year in 2002 and Powell helped Stanford accumulate a record over her four years, as she averaged 17.3 points, 9.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game, while posting six triple-doubles in her Stanford career. In addition to her WNBA career, Powell played professionally overseas as well. She helped Fenerbahçe win two Turkish League championships in 2009 and 2010 and also played for CSKA Moscow (Russia), Perfumerias Halcon Avenida (Spain), Basket Spezia (Italy) and Wisla Kraków (Poland). Powell also played with both the USA Junior National Team and USA Senior National Team. She won a gold medal with the junior team at the FIBA Americas Championships in the summer of 2000 and was one of three captains on the senior team that won a silver medal at the Pan American Games in the summer of In her prep career at Mountain Pointe, Powell was a Parade Magazine First-Team All-American (2000) and named the Arizona Player of the Century by the Arizona Republic. Her senior season, she averaged 21.1 points and 15.5 rebounds leading the Pride to a 30-2 record and a berth in the state title game. She was twice named Arizona Player of the Year and set school records with 2,478 career points and 1,760 career rebounds. Powell earned her first career win at the helm of the Grand Canyon women's basketball program on Wednesday, Nov. 22.
