GCU will host its Breast Cancer Awareness game on Saturday against Utah Valley as they honor the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The Lopes will wear pink uniforms in the contest. 2. Fifth-year transfer Erika Thomas grabbed 22 boards in back-to-back contests, including a 15 rebound outing at UTRGV. Thomas' 15 boards, marked the first tme a Lope achieved the feat since the season. She's just the fourth player in the GCU's D I history to combine for 22 or more boards in consecutive contests. 3. With an 9-2 home record, GCU has posted the best mark since the season. GCU's lone losses have been at the hands of No. 10 Washington and New Mexico State. 4. Through WAC contests Laramie has averaged 19.3 points per game, good for first place in the league. Overall, she is averaging 19.9 points per game good for No.17 in the NCAA. She currently leads the conference in scoring by 3.6 points. 5. 3 LOPES PICKED THIRD IN PRESEASON POLLS After wrapping up the season tied for third place in the conference and a Western Athletic Conference record of 7-6, there is a level of excitement as head coach Trent May enters his 10th season at the helm. On Oct. 12, the WAC released its preseason rankings as voted on by the head coaches of the league s eight schools. During WAC contests, she shot 41.9 percent from 3-point range and ended the regular season with the fifth-highest scoring average in the WAC. He also ranks third in the Western Athletic Conference and has produced a record through four years in the conference. FIFTH-YEAR FEVER Among the eight newcomers, May brought four graduate transfers on board. The presence of Aniya Baker, Marina Laramie, Erika Thomas and Laura Marcos-Canedo bring both leadership and experience to May's roster this season. Baker, Laramie and Marcos- Canedo have been a key part of the Lopes game plan during the season. Laramie put up a Thomas pulled down 15 rebounds at UTRGV, marking the first time a Lope achieved the feat since the season. After being out three games due to concussion, Baker had a complete performance against CSUB, putting up nine points, five boards, four steals and three assists. Laramie didn't disappoint putting up 17 points against UMKC going 7-for-12 and 3-for-5 from long range. In the team's thrilling victory over UTRGV, Laramie and Baker had solid outings. Laramie had a 20 point performance and Baker tied a career-high with eight assists. Laramie put up a team-leading 22 points against NM State. After being out due to injury, Laramie returned to the court against Utah Valley, netting 12 points with nine rebounds. Marcos- Canedo also had a solid outing producing seven points and dishing out five assists. Both Marcos-Canedo and Baker had six boards a piece against Hawai'i. Baker registered a team-leading four steals for the sixth time this season. Against Northern Arizona, Marcos-Canedo registered a careerhigh five boards with a team leading seven assists, she led GCU in the category for the third time this year. She also tallied nine points. At Southern Utah, both Baker and Marcos-Canedo had strong showings. Baker put up nine points and led the team with six steals for the sixth time. With 10 points, Marcos-Canedo reached the double-figure mark for the second time this season. Baker Marcos-Canedo Against Cal Poly, Baker led GCU in assists (5) for the Laramie Thomas fifth time. She also put up her third double figure outing with 13 points. She tallied her first block against the Mustangs. Marcos-Canedo tallied a season high six rebounds against Cal Poly. She also dished out two assists and shot 3-for- 5 (.750) from the free throw line. Laramie posted her fourth double double with 21 points and 11 rebounds against Cal Poly. Against Florida Atlantic Baker tied a season high with six assists, she also had three steals. Laramie also put up a 30 point performance and grabbed 10 rebounds for her third double double of the year against FAU. Against Washington, Baker recorded a season-high seven assists, while Laramie led the Lopes in points for the fifth straight contest and second-straight game with 24 points and seven rebounds. Baker had an outstanding showing during the GCU Thanksgiving Classic. With 26 points, 12 rebounds and 13 steals through two contests Baker played a key role in GCU's victories. Against Idaho, she nearly recorded a triple-double performance with 15 points, 12 rebounds and eight steals. Her eight steals against Idaho marked a WAC season high in the category. Marcos-Canedo was also solid from the point at the classic, dishing out seven assists through both contests. Against Rice, Laramie led the Lopes with 15 points for the second consecutive week. At Duke, Laramie collected GCU's first double-double of the season, banking 22 points with 12 rebounds. Baker led the squad with six assists. Against Alcorn State, Baker, Laramie and Marcos-Canedo combined for 32 of GCU's 77 points on the night. Baker picked up six points with four steals on the night. Laramie had a team-leading seven boards with 10 points. Marcos-Canedo finished with 16 points, with a team-leading nine assists. She combined with teammates Jessica Gajewski and Casey Rarrick for 51 of GCU's 77 points against Alcorn State. SCOUTING SEATTLE U The Redhawks are currently on the year. They sit at second in the WAC with a 8-1 conference mark, with their lone loss to NM State. They are currently averaging 64.2 points per game with 36.9 rebounds per game. Alexis Montgomery leads the squad in scoring with 16.3 points per game, she also has a team-leading 8.0 boards per contest. Kaylee Best is also putting up 13.5 points per contest. GCU will meet Seattle U for the 10th time in program history. Seattle U holds the advantage in the all-time series at 4-5. In their last meeting, GCU fell to the Redhawks in Seattle in a finish. 3

4 SCOUTING UTAH VALLEY Utah Valley is currently 8-16 on the year. The Wolverines are currently 3-6 in conference play and on a two game win streak after defeating UMKC and Chicago State. The Wolverines are averaging 60.0 ppg with 35.3 rpg. Taylor Gordon leads the squad with 14.8 ppg, while Sam Lubke leads with 8.6 rpg. Utah Valley's Mariah Seals (13.4) and Lubcke (12.1) are both averaging double figures. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES GCU will meet conference foe Utah Valley for the ninth time in program history and holds the 6-2 all-time advantage. GCU dominated in Orem in the team's last meeting in January, picking up its first WAC win of the season at 'RED' HOT GCU's Marina Laramie, also known as 'Red' has been a force to be reckoned with. With a total of 339 points on the year, she is currently averaging 19.9 ppg. She sits at No. 17 in the NCAA in scoring and leads the conference by 3.6 points in the category. She has led the squad in points through 12 contests and has posted two 30+ outings. Laramie She put up 26 points at NM State, going 11-of-25 with a pair of triples and six board, she notched a season-high with 25 field goal attempts. Laramie produced a team-leading 23 points against Chicago State, adding 10 boards for her fifth double double of the season. Against UMKC she put up 17 points going 7-for-12 and 3-for-5 from long range. At Seattle U, she finished the night with 18 points (7-of-12), five rebounds and went 4-for-5 from the charity stripe. Against UTRGV, Laramie added 20 points, with seven boards. She also dished out a pair of assists and recorded her first career block as a Lope. Against NM State, Laramie put up a team-leading 22 points, marking the eighth time on the year. She also pulled down six boards. After being out due to injury, Laramie returned to the court against Utah Valley, netting 12 points with nine rebounds. She rounded out the complete performance with two assists and two steals on the night. Against Cal Poly, she collected her fourth double double outing with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She accounts for four of the Lopes nine double doubles. Against Florida Atlantic, she put up her second 30 point performance, with a double double outing with 10 rebounds. She also collected 21 points in the first half for the second time this season. Against No.13 Washington, Laramie put up 24 points. She has engineered four double doubles this season, including a 17 point, 12 rebound night at Duke in Week 2. At UC Riverside, netted 24 points, which included 20 points in the first half, accounting for half of GCU's total of 40 at the break. Against Denver, she tied a career high with 31 points and collected her second double double of the year. She also leads the league in 3-point field goal percentage (45.0) going 18-of-40 this year. Laramie has 12 career double doubles. She also had a WAC season high 13 field goals made in Week 3. LARAMIE EARNS WAC POW HONORS GCU's Marina Laramie was named Western Athletic Conferece Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4. Laramie continued to lead the Lopes with two 24-point games and a 30-point game on the week against UC Riverside, No. 13 Washington and Florida Atlantic. At UCR, she scored 24 points to go with nine rebounds to narrowly miss the double-double. She followed that up with 24 points and seven rebounds two days later against No. 13 Washington before rounding out the week with a 30-point, 10-rebound performance in a blowout win over Florida Atlantic. BACK AT IT Casey Rarrick has returned to the court this season after going down with a season-ending injury a year ago. She currently leads the squad with 48 3-pointers. Rarrick Against UTRGV, Rarrick led the squad with 14 points, going 5-of-10 from the field and 4-of-7 from long range. She was instrumental in the team's comeback victory over UTRGV. She rattled off eight points in the fourth quarter including two triples. She combined with Laramie and Mobley for the 25 total points that led the team to the win. She totaled 13 points on the night going 3-of-8 from the field and 3-for-6 from the long range. Rarrick rattled off 18 points at Chaminade, she accounted for six of the Lopes 10 triples. At Hawai'i, Rarrick pulled down a season-high four rebounds on the night. Against Northern Arizona, Rarrick notched her fifth double-figure game with 17 points going 5-for-11 and 2-for-3 from long range. She also put up a double-figure first half performance 4 with 11 points for the first time this year. At Southern Utah, Rarrick produced 18 points going 5-for-12 from the field and 4-for-7 from long range. She knocked down the final pair of free throws to ice the game for GCU. Against Cal Poly, Rarrick had a seven point outing going 2-of-7 from the field, with one trey through 30 minutes. She also had three assists. Rarrick put up eight points, with a pair of 3-pointers through 24 minutes of action against FAU. Rarrick played well against Washington, going 3-for-5 for eight points and 2-for-4 from long range. Against UCR, Rarrick produced her third double digit outing of the season with 10 points. She also garnered her second straight 10+ point game. In the GCU Thanksgiving Classic, she posted back-to-back double digit performances. Against Idaho, she tied a career high with six treys and 20 points. At Duke, Rarrick produced five points and helped the Lopes go on a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter of the contest. In the season-opener against Alcorn State, she posted a team leading 20 points. She knocked down four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and went 7-of-10 from field goal range with a pair of assists and one steal. JESS AT HER BEST.Jessica Gajewski continues to wow on the court Gajewski currently has a point FG scoring mark and sits in fourth place in the WAC in the category. At NM State, she put up a 12 point performance going 4-of-9 from the field. At UTRGV, she finished with 13 points off 5-of- 15 shooting from the field and 3-of-7 shooting from long range. At CSUB, she put up 12 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Gajewski put up 11 points against UMKC, going 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-5 from long range. She also snatched two steals on the night. Gajewski had a solid day against NM State, putting up 10 points with three assists. At Utah Valley, she produced her another solid night, putting up her second 20-plus point performance after netting 22 points, going 7-of-15. She recorded a season-high six triples accounting for six of GCU's nine. In the fourth quarter, she tallied 14 of the Lopes 22 points and hit all of GCU s triples going 4-for-4, including a pair of free throws. She produced 14 points in the fourth quarter alone, notching her second double-figure outing in a period this season. She put up nine points at Chaminade. She also had a solid night at Hawai'i. She notched a team-leading 19 points going 6-for-13 and 3-for-8 from long range. It marked her second time leading the squad in the category. She produced a double-figure performance in a period for the second straight game after a 10-point outing in the first quarter. Against NAU, She notched a career-high 31 points going 12-for-18 from the field and 5-for-8 from beyond the arc in the team's win over NAU. In the third quarter alone, she put up 18 points going 4-for-6 and 7-of-10 in the period. She led the Lopes in points for the first time this season and produced her seventh double-figure outing of the year. She is just the second Lope to produce a 30-plus performance this season. Against Southern Utah, she posted 11 points, going 2-for-8 from long range tallying two assists and one steal on the night. In Week 4, Gajewski put together three straight double-figure contests against UC Riverside, Washington and Florida Atlantic. In addition to her 16 point outing at UCR, Gajewski put up 15 points against the Huskies, going 3-for-8 from the 3-point line, she then totaled another 15 points against FAU going 6-for-10 and 3-for-6 from long range. She tallied 16 points at UCR finishing second on the squad and went 6-for-9 from the field and 3-for-5 from long range. In her debut, Gajewski tallied 15 points going 5-of-9 from field goal range and was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc against Alcorn State Gajewski was perfect from the free throw line (2-for-2) and grabbed a rebound with one assist through 29 minutes of play. MOBLEY ON THE MOVE Brie Mobley has continued to show her speed and versatility on the court. After producing her third straight 20-plus scoring night against UMKC, she has been impressive since her first game against Northern Arizona. At NM State, Mobley put up 14 points, 10 rebounds tieing a season high with five assists, picking up her second-straight double double and fourth this season. At UTRGV, Mobley produced picked up her third double double of the season off a 11 point, 10 rebound outing. She also dished out five assists. At CSUB, she recorded nine points with eight boards, adding four assists in the contest. Mobley scored 14 against Chicago State, pulling down four boards with two steals. Against the 'Roos she led the squad in scoring (23), rebounds (7) assists (6) and steals (5). Marking the first time a single player has led in four different categories in a single game since Dana Jones during the season. She is currently averaging 15.3 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game. Through WAC contests she sits at ffifth in the league in scoring with 16.4 ppg. Against UTRGV, she recorded a career high 12 rebounds, pulling down the final board that gave the Lopes possession with seconds on the clock. She has led GCU in the category eight times this year. Against NM State, she pulled down nine boards. In the WAC opener, against Utah Valley she pulled down 11 boards, achieving the mark for the third time this year. At Chaminade, snagged seven rebounds with a pair of steals. At Hawai'i pulled down six boards, adding one steal and one assist. Against NAU, tallied eight boards. Pulled down 11 boards at Southern Utah. She snatched the final rebound in the contest, drew the foul and knocked down two free throws that led the Lopes to victory. She also collected her first double double of the season with a team-leading 21 points and 11 rebounds. WAC ATTACK With one Lope leading the conference in scoring and a total of four in the top-5 in the conference standings, GCU continues to impress on the court. Laramie leads with 19.9 ppg, she also leads in 3-Point FG Pct at percent. Gajewski sits at fourth in the category (39.0). Zelor Massaquoi is now second with 8.2 rpg. Aniya Baker sits in the top 2 with 3.9 apg. SEEING DOUBLE DOUBLES GCU has registered 12 double doubles on the year with performances from five different Lopes. Marina Laramie currently leads the squad in the category with five, while Brie Mobley has four, and Aniya Baker, Vanessa Murphy and Zelor Massaquoi share one a piece. Mobley notched her fourth double double after a 14 point, 11 rebound day at NM State. Mobley picked up her third double double performance after putting up 11 points, with 10 rebounds against UTRGV. Laramie notched her fifth double double against Chicago State with a 23 point, 10 rebound outing. Mobley collected her second double double against New Mexico State after netting 17 points and pulled down 10 boards. In her 15 point 10 rebound outing against Cal Poly, Murphy became the first freshman to achieve the feat since the team transitioned to NCAA Division I action. Massaquoi also recorded her first of the season and second career after leading the team with 21 points and 11 rebounds and was critical to the Lopes victory over SUU. WELCOME TO THE SQUAD Although the Lopes graduated their three top scorers, May has reloaded for the season by adding eight newcomers. The diverse group includes a pair of freshmen, a junior transfer and four fifth-year transfers. With experience, versatility and leadership the Lopes are poised for a successful year with a balanced group of contributors on the court. The newcomers include freshmen, Alia Parsons, Vanessa Murphy and Carley Turnbull. Junior transfer Brie Mobley was added last spring and fifth-year transfers, Aniya Baker, Marina Laramie, Erika Thomas and Laura Marcos-Canedo were added in the summer. May also added two to his coaching staff as he welcomed assistant coach John Marcum and director of basketball operations Rachel Galligan to the team. SISTER SISTER It's no secret that in Trent May's program family matters and with the addition of fifth-year transfer Erika Thomas the tradition rings true. Thomas, the younger sister of asssitant coach Krystal Thomas will not only reunite with her big sister, but rekindle a relationship on the court. Krystal Thomas Erika Thomas Erika Thomas who was a volleyball standout at UConn will look to transition back to the basketball court and refine her skill set at the center position with the help of her big sister Krystal Thomas. THOMAS SIGNS WITH WASHINGTON MYSTICS.Second-year assistant coach Krystal Thomas, recently signed with the WN- BA s Washington Mystics for the 2017 season. Thomas will join her fourth WNBA franchise in her sixth season in the league. She spent the offseason playing for the Seattle Storm. Her addition to the Seattle squad marked her fifth year of action in the league. Thomas returned to the team that drafted her in the third round at 36th overall in the 2011 WNBA Draft. The former Duke standout also spent time with the Phoenix Mercury from and played for Indiana Fever in In her second year as an assistant coach for the Lopes, Thomas continues to use her expertise and experience to train, develop and mentor GCU's squad. In just her first season coaching at the Division I level, Thomas made an immediate impact on the coaching staff and on the players improving their craft as GCU ranked second in the WAC in points per game allowed (60.2) and third in defensive rebounds per game (36.5). FLASH BACK GCU finished the campaign with a record and collected their second winning season since joining the Division I level. The Lopes had a tough non-conference schedule and faced powerhouse programs West Virginia, Gonzaga and USC GCU finished its non-conference schedule with a.500 record and eight wins, surpassing their six wins during the season. The Lopes ended non-conference winning three of their last four games. GCU averaged 62.9 ppg last season and averaged 70.7 ppg in their last four contests of WAC Play. GCU had no shortage of clutch players a season ago. The Lopes were the only team in the WAC to have a player in the top-five in points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game and steals per game. Jessica Gajewski finished fourth in the WAC at 12.5 points per game. Cheyenne Hedrington finished in the conference, pulling down an average of 6.7 rebounds per contest. Courtney Hayes led the WAC in assists dishing out 6.6 assists per game. Hayes also lead the league in steals per contest at 2.8.

6 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES LOPES AROUND THE GLOBE With three student-athletes from around the world, the Lopes continue to build a squad with diverse talent and athleticism. LAURA MARCUS-CANEDO Salamanca, Senegal ZELOR MASSAQUOI Monrovia, Liberia JESSICA GAJEWSKI Brisbane, Australia GCU 10 IN 2 EFFECT As part of its $1 billion campus expansion, Grand Canyon University announced on Aug. 16, 2016 that it will complete construction of 10 new athletic facilities within the next two years as it continues its transition to NCAA Division I athletics. One of these 10 facilities is a brand new practice facility for the men s and women s basketball teams. Adjacent to Grand Canyon University Arena, the practice facility will feature one main practice court with two side practice courts, coaches offices, a player s lounge, meeting spaces, a film room for both men s and women s basketball programs. Additionally, the practice facility will feature a museum of artifacts from Phoenix sports icon Jerry Colangelo, who has strong ties to the university. The facility is expected to open in January Other facilities part of #GCU10in2 are: GCU Stadium, baseball stadium, softball stadium, student-athlete development center, tennis facility, beach volleyball stadium, equipment room, GCU Golf Course practice facility, and an expansion to the Lopes Performance Center. With the addition of graduate transfer Laura Marcos- Canedo, the Lopes add yet another international player to their squad. Marcus-Canedo who hails from Salamanca, Spain joins the Lopes as a fifth-year transfer after a four year stint at Central Florida. Jessica Gajewski, the Brisbane Australia product will enter her third Marcus-Canedo year with GCU and is poised to build on her success from the 3-point line a year ago. Massaquoi Gajewski Junior Zelor Massaquoi is from Monrovia, Iberia and has been a solid contributor on the court for the Lopes. During her time in a GCU uniform. MIDNIGHT MADNESS: THE APOCO-LOPES! The Grand Canyon men s and women s basketball programs hosted their annual Midnight Madness event to tip off the season on Oct. 8, as over 7,000 fans piled into GCU Arena to welcome their Lopes for the season "GCU's Midnight Madness is literally one of the coolest events in college sports. I know other places think their Midnight Madness is good but ours is great," May said. "Kudos to Taylor Griffin and the events staff at GCU who just simply know how to throw a great party and kick off the basketball season in great fashion." The support for GCU basketball was evident on campus as students began lining up at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon. Once the doors opened for the fans to enter GCU Arena, the show began as Thunder welcomed the crowd followed up by the Havocs starting the party. The GCU cheer and dance team put on a show for the fans and after the GCU drumline pumped up the crowd, the basketball teams were introduced for the first time. 7 GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY ARENA / LAST TIME OUT Grand Canyon University Arena has provided the Lopes a definitive home-court advantage since opening its doors before the basketball season. With a seating capacity of 7,200 and a prime location on campus, the venue is regularly packed to the rafters with students and fans, providing an electric atmosphere ripe for success. An intimidating factor for opponents, the large Havocs student section has proven to be one of the best in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The Havocs create an imposing backdrop for visiting teams as they fill the bleachers with energy and enthusiasm. During the past four years, the GCU women s team has been dominant in the arena, posting an overall record of 44-12,including a 13-1 season before starting the transition to Division I and an 11-2 season in the first DI year. The Lopes record playing a regular complement of DI guests has been impressive as well, as GCU owns a 19-8 mark since The success on the court helped GCU to a postseason tournament appearance in its first ye of transitioning to the NCAA s highest level. It was a tale of two halves as GCU came out popping in the first half, putting up 37 points for a nine point lead heading into the locker room. But the Lopes came out stagnant in the third, relinquishing a lead they would never get back. Marina Laramie led the Lopes with 26 points, going 11-of- 25 from the field. Brie Mobley notched her fourth double double of the season with 14 points and 11 boards, while Jessica Gajewski also put 12 points on the board. While GCU came out of the break with a nine point lead, the Aggies mounted an rally that rendered the Lopes scoreless for over a pair of minutes. Rarrick, Laura Marcos-Canedo (16) and Jessica Gajewski (15) combined for 51 of GCU's 77 points. The Lopes opened the first half of the season in style putting up 40 points through a pair of quarters. GCU had a strong outing to start the contest, shooting 42.4 percent from the field and secured five 3-pointers in the half. Marina Laramie and Jessica Gajewski put up double-figure performances in the first half to keep the game manageable. The Lopes brought the score to with a Casey Rarrick trey before the buzzer going into half time. The Huskies controlled the majority of the second half. In the fourth, the Lopes engineered a 10-4 run to cut the lead to midway through the final quarter, but the Huskies strength proved insurmountable. GCU had two players accomplish double double performances for the first time this season as Marina Laramie ( 21 points, 11 rebounds) and freshman Vanessa Murphy ( 15 points, 10 rebounds) achieved the feat. GCU trailed early, but mounted a 7-2 run to take the lead, which they never relinquished. The Lopes held Cal Poly to 24.1 shooting in the first half, rendering the Mustangs scoreless and allowing just 19 first half points. The second half was filled with aggressive and gritty play as Cal Poly continued to fight back. The Mustangs closed its deficit to four in the third period, which was the closest they would come. The Lopes took its play up a notch in the second half, putting together a 52.0 percent scoring performance to claim the contest. STAT OF THE GAME The Lopes totaled a 50 percent total in a half for the third time this season, when they shot 52.0 percent is the second half against Cal Poly. GAME 10 GCU 76, SOUTHERN UTAH 65 DEC. 16, 2016 LOPES EDGE OUT SOUTHERN UTAH In the gritty and physical contest, the Lopes took the early advantage in the first quarter outscoring the Thunderbirds and rendering SUU scoreless for over two minutes to hold the lead. In the second, the Thunderbirds came roaring back putting together a comeback performance that outscored GCU to take the lead off a layup at the buzzer at at the half. It all came down to the final frame, after three lead changes in the period, the T-Bird's tied the game up at In the final seconds, Massaquoi knocked down two free throws giving GCU the slight edge at at the 57 second mark. Brie Mobley led the Lopes with 19 points and 11 rebounds good for a double-double.after a slow first half performance, GCU started the second half on fire, netting baskets on four-straight possessions, led by threestraight Mobley scores to go up early in the period. The Lopes went on to put up 22 points, shooting 53.5 percent, led by Mobley's eight points. GAME 14 GCU 62, UTAH VALLEY 46 JAN. 7, 2017 LOPES PICK UP FIRST WAC WIN AT UTAH VALLEY GCU defeated Utah Valley 62-46, picking up its first WAC win. The Lopes forced 20 Wolverine turnovers and out rebounding UVU on the glass. GCU went into the second period with a defensive mindset, forcing 10 turnovers and picking up 15 points off Wolverine miscues. GCU capped off its 22-4 run with a Marina Laramie jumper to leave the score at at the half. GCU started the final frame off strong, going on an early run, but UVU started answering the call and continued to close the gap. GAME 16 GCU 60, UTRGV 59 JAN. 14, 2017 LOPES DOWN UTRGV IN FINAL SECONDS GCU came from behind to defeat UT Rio Grande Valley in the final seconds. Brie Mobley made the game winning shot before the buzzer, shooting 8-of-20 from the field and racking up a total of 20 points.it was a back- and-forth battle to finish out the first half, with both teams working defensively to only score a combined 16 points. UTRGV was able to pull ahead in the last two minutes off four straight free throws to lead the Lopes The Lopes struggled on offense until the 4th period where they would rally to overcome their deficit. UTRGV drained a triple for the first shot of the 4th Quarter while the Lopes struggled to find the net at first. With just over six minutes to go, the Lopes took off on an 8-0 run to finally pull ahead of the Vaqueros It was a back and forth point battle all the way up until the buzzer. Massaquoi soared to grab the UTRGV board to give the Lopes one final opportunity with 17 seconds on the clock. With a beautifully drawn up play, Mobley's secured the game-winning layup at 13 seconds to carry the Lopes into a lead over the Vaqueros. STAT OF THE GAME 7 GCU surpassed a seven point deficit in the final quarter to comeback and win the game. The Lopes stepped it up in the fourth putting together a 53.8 percent performance from the field, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe to outscore the 'Roos in the final fame. GCU got off to a slow start, but took the lead at the buzzer going into the break at off of 63.9 percent shooting from the field and 75.0 percent shooting from long range. In the third, the Lopes focused on offense and continued to rack up points. They made 100 percent of their freethrows and maintained a narrow lead after a back-and-forth battle. In a outing mostly dominated by GCU's defense, the Lopes jumped out to an early lead in the first with an 11-0 run, finishing the quarter with an 18-4 lead. Outscoring the Chicago State 22-8 in the first quarter, Grand Canyon hit 7-for-13 from the field. Marina Laramie scored 11 points (3-of-5), including 5-for-6 from the free throw line. With less than five minutes left in the first half, the Cougars hit five-straight field goals, cutting the Lopes' lead to Grand Canyon had some turnover issues as well, coughing up the ball eight times in the first half.
