4 LB Aldon Smith - 1st Round - 7th Overall Aldon Smith has the ability to line up at a variety of positions, whether its standing up or with his hand in the dirt. Smith holds the Missouri single-season sack record (11.5 in 09), which was previously held by fellow 49er Justin Smith (11.0 in 00). Usually when you see defensive ends or pass rushers with the long arms, they re not too strong with it. They have the long arms to kind of get your hands off of them. But with Aldon, he s strong, too, so that he can really use them as an advantage. Those things are real long. He put one on me the other day and I was like fully extended and I couldn t even touch his body. - T Joe Staley on going against Aldon Smith in practice QB Colin Kaepernick - 2nd Round - 36th Overall Colin Kaepernick is the only player in NCAA history to throw for over 10,000 yards and rush for over 4,000 yards, Kaepernick has an excellent work ethic that will help him make the transition from the pistol offense he ran in college to the 49ers West Coast Offense. You hear talk about Colin being a developmental quarterback. I heard that a few times after we selected Colin. That goes for all quarterbacks. That is every quarterback who goes from college to the NFL. He is no different. He has got great gifts from Mom, Dad, God. He comes with the energy and the ability to think his way to success. All those things and more. - 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh 2011 DRAFT CLASS WR Ronald Johnson - 6th Round - 182nd Overall An All-Pac 10 performer in 2010, Ronald Johnson tallied more than 3,500 all-purpose yards in four seasons at USC. He joins his former Trojans position coach in San Francisco, as John Morton was added this offseason to coach the 49ers wide receivers. The input from [wide receivers] coach [John] Morton who coached Ronald at USC. There was an element of standing on the table for Ronald in the sense that the guy s all about football. The guy loves the game, loves practice. That s the best hours of his day is when he s out there on the practice field. Those things when they re coming from the position coach, and he s so passionate about it, that s the thing that really gets your attention. - Head coach Jim Harbaugh on WR Ronald Johnson s passion for football S Colin Jones - 6th Round - 190th Overall Colin Jones is a physical, quick and rangy safety who earned All-Mountain West honors as a senior in 2010 for the Horned Frogs. When you look at the measurable, he s 6-foot, 210 pounds, runs low 4.4s and you can see it on film. He loves special teams. You look at the TCU film, covering kicks, covering punts, he s the first guy down and he loves contact. We re going to throw him into the mix at strong safety, but his path to making this football team is on special teams. We re looking for him to become an elite special teams player. - 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke CB Chris Culliver - 3rd Round - 80th Overall Beginning his collegiate career as a safety, Chris Culliver made the transition to cornerback as a senior. He also brings a wealth of kickoff return experience, ranking third in SEC history in kickoff returns (106) and kickoff return yards (2,476). One of the things we really liked about Chris was the physical attributes of the player. And we like the fact that he s played both safety and corner. To me, that s a positive not a negative. That means there s upside to the position he switched to as a senior, but it also gives you versatility. He s competitive. He s got some things he s going to have to learn as a corner. But every corner who comes into this league has to develop. - 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke RB Kendall Hunter - 4th Round - 115th Overall A first-team All-American in 2010, Kendall Hunter ranks fifth in Big 12 history with 4,181 career rushing yards and became just the fourth running back in Oklahoma State history to rush for over 1,500 in two seasons. This is a guy we feel can run the power game, can run between the tackles, can get out on the edges, can pass protect, can come out of the backfield and catch the football, can return kicks (and) can play on coverage teams, if we ask him to. We love his feet, his vision and love the fact he can step through tackles. We like the guy s versatility. And he s a football player. He loves the game (and) is passionate about it. - 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke G Daniel Kilgore - 5th Round - 163rd Overall With experience at both guard and tackle positions at Appalachian State, Daniel Kilgore is a mauler that blocks through the whistle and can block more than one defender on one play. We see him as a guy that can come in, and once again, is versatile. He can play guard, center. He s held up at left tackle, and did so very well against some very good competition. University of Florida was probably his best game. That was the game that really attracted us to him. We like players that can step up in big games. It shows a little bit of what they re made of, and he certainly was able to do that. - 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke FB Bruce Miller - 7th Round - 211th Overall A productive defensive end in college, Bruce Miller is making the transition to fullback for the 49ers. The two-time Conference USA Defensive of the Year s blue-collar work ethic made the 49ers confident he will be able to transition to the offensive side of the ball. He is wired the way we want our guys wired. This guy is wired right. He plays the game 100 percent, every snap. Here s a guy who can come in and learn fullback, possibly learn some outside linebacker, play on (special) teams. He ll show up on game days because he outworks everybody. - 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke G Mike Person - 7th Round - 239th Overall Mike Person started his final 34 games on the offensive line and did not allow a sack as senior, earning First-Team All-Big Sky honors. You see him have nice balance, nice feet. You re looking for a guy that does not lose very often at this level (Division II). You want somebody who dominates and makes it look easy. That s what he does. - 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke CB Curtis Holcomb - 7th Round - 250th Overall A third-team All-America selection in 2010, Curtis Holcomb posted 12 INTs in 37 career starts with the Rattlers. The oldest of 8 children, Holcomb was a natural leader at Florida A&M, being named a four-time team captain. He s similar to Phillip Adams. He s from a smaller school and a little unknown. But at his pro day, he had a real good workout. What we re looking for is the quickness. It s the same thing we saw last year in Phillip when we were (scouting) Phillip -- the quickness, the close. I don t know that anybody in our building has ever heard of it, a guy who s been a four-time captain at the college level. He s all about football. He s a very smart young man and competitive. - 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke

5 K David Akers , th Year - 5 Pro Bowls Akers joins the 49ers after spending the last 12 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He has played in 189 games, connecting on 294 of 359 field goal attempts (81.9 percent) and 443 of 449 PATs (98.7 percent). A five-time Pro Bowler, Akers was named to the NFL s All-Decade team of the 2000s having tallied 1,169 points. He has recorded 291 field goals and 1,312 points since 2000, marking the highest total among NFL kickers during that time span. Akers has played in 19 postseason games, connecting on 31 of 38 field goal attempts and 41 or 42 PATs for 134 points. His 31 postseason field goals and 134 points each rank third in NFL history. In the kicking community, we all know each other. We ve kicked against each other over a number of years. I m not coming in and trying to replace Joe [Nedney], because he was just spectacular here. I want to come in and do the best of my ability, but Joe is a legend here for what he s been able to do the past six years. I wish him well. Hopefully, I can step up and be half the foot he was. - K David Akers replacing former 49ers kicker Joe Nedney LB Antwan Applewhite - 6-3, 258-3rd Year Applewhite originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers in He has played in 31 games (13 starts), recording 68 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two passes defensed. In 2010, Applewhite played in 16 games (13 starts) and set career highs in tackles (48), sacks (3.0) and forced fumbles (two). LB Blake Costanzo - 6-1, 235-5th Year Costanzo has played in 45 games, notching 54 tackles, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries on special teams. He joins the 49ers after two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, where he was tutored by current 49ers assistant head coach/special teams coordinator Brad Seely, who coached the Browns special teams at the time. Costanzo saw action in all 16 games, notching 14 tackles, three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble on special teams and was named to SI.com s All-Pro team as a special teamer in In 2010, he played in 10 games and recorded seven tackles and a fumble recovery on special teams. I definitely have a couple screws loose. I think that s why coach Seely likes me a little bit. You ve got to be a little crazy to run down on kickoffs as fast as you can and just run into people and try to make tackles. It takes a special kind of dude to do it. - LB Blake Costanzo on playing special teams WR Braylon Edwards - 6-3, 214-7th Year - 1 Pro Bowl A Pro Bowl selection in 2007, Edwards has played in 90 games (84 starts), registering 326 receptions for 5,142 yards and 39 touchdowns. He entered the league as the third overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. After being traded by the Browns to the New York Jets in October of 2009, he went on to play in 28 games (26 starts) and tallied 88 receptions for 1,445 yards and 11 touchdowns. Edwards played for the Browns from , appearing in 62 games (58 starts) and notching 238 receptions for 3,697 yards and 28 touchdowns. In 2007, he broke the Browns single-season franchise records for receiving yards (1,289) and touchdown receptions (16). Edwards was selected to the Pro Bowl and was named second-team All-Pro for his performance. He is a big receiver. We were looking for that big stature receiver. I think that, another experienced guy who [averaged] 17 yards a catch last year. A NFL pro receiver and I think he s hungry. - 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh on WR Braylon Edwards KEY FREE AGENT ACQUISITIONS When the free agency period started this year, the 49ers front office had a plan. General manager Trent Baalke and his staff began by resigning QB Alex Smith, DT Ray McDonald and G/C Tony Wragge. The team was also able to add three former first round draft picks (WR Braylon Edwards, CB Carlos Rogers and S Donte Whitner), a member of the NFL s All-Decade team for the 2000s (K David Akers) and a Super Bowl champion (C Jonathan Goodwin). C Jonathan Goodwin - 6-3, th Year - 1 Pro Bowl Goodwin was originally drafted by the New York Jets in the fifth round (154th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft. He has played in 132 games (60 starts) for both the Jets and the New Orleans Saints. Goodwin signed with the Saints on March 27, 2006, after three seasons with the Jets ( ). A Columbia, SC, native, who played in 74 games (47 starts) for the Saints, he started every game at center over the past two seasons. Goodwin was a member of the Saints Super Bowl XLIV championship team and was selected to the 2010 Pro Bowl. We re thrilled to have Jonathon Goodwin, I know [Head Coach] Jim [Harbaugh] is very happy to have another Michigan man onboard. Jonathon is an experienced guy. I ve got to spend some time with him, a very sharp guy. We re looking forward to getting him in the mix. Our guys up front are working really hard. We re getting better every day so it s going to be great competition, great competition. - 49ers Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman LB Larry Grant - 6-1, 251-4th Year Grant originally entered the league as a seventh round draft choice by the 49ers in the 2008 NFL Draft. He was signed to the 49ers practice squad following training camp. Grant was signed to the St. Louis Rams active roster on November 26, He has played in 34 games (eight starts) and has registered 48 tackles, 3.0 sacks and three forced fumbles in his three-year career. CB Carlos Rogers - 6-0, 192-7th Year Rogers was originally drafted in the first round (ninth overall) by the Washington Redskins in the 2005 NFL Draft. He has played in 78 games (68 starts), registering 300 tackles, eight interceptions (returning one for a touchdown), four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 76 passes defensed. Rogers 76 passes defensed rank tied for 11th in the NFL since I needed a change. I wanted something new. I just wanted a group of guys willing to work and get better. This team is hungry, having not had a winning season in a while. Just talking to Frank (Gore) and Vernon (Davis), just the attitude of the team, I wanted to be a part of that. - CB Carlos Rogers on joining the 49ers S Donte Whitner , 208-6th Year Whitner was originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the first round (8th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft. He played in 69 games (66 starts) at strong safety during his five-year career with the Bills, totaling 451 tackles, five interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, 1.5 sacks and 19 passes defensed. Whitner started all 16 games last season and posted a career-high 140 tackles to go along with seven passes defensed, one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and a half sack. He s an experienced guy who s been there before. He looked exceptionally quick today and seemed like he had a real nose for the football. He stood out in today s practice and quite a few plays to my eye. - 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh on S Donte Whitner s first practice S Madieu Williams - 6-1, 203-8th Year Williams (6-1, 203) was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round (56th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft and signed with the Minnesota Vikings in He has played in 88 games (83 starts), registering 481 tackles, 12 interceptions, 4.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and 43 passes defensed. In 2010, Williams set a career-high with 96 tackles. (Pronounced mah-dee-yoo)

6 THE O.C. - GREG ROMAN Greg Roman is in his first year with the San Francisco 49ers after being named the team s offensive coordinator on January 14, Roman is in his 14th year coaching in the NFL and has been a member of the coaching staffs for the Carolina Panthers ( ), Houston Texans ( ) and Baltimore Ravens ( ). He most recently spent the previous two seasons on Jim Harbaugh s staff at Stanford. Roman joined the Cardinal in 2009 as the running game coordinator, with position responsibilities of tight ends and offensive tackles. In 2010, he kept those responsibilities, but also added the duties of associate coach and assistant head coach of the offense. During his time at Stanford, the Cardinal posted a 20-6 record, which was the best over a two-year span in the University s history. Prior to arriving at Stanford, Roman served as the assistant offensive line coach for a Baltimore Ravens team that captured the 2006 AFC North Division title with a regular season mark of He helped the Ravens improve to 17th in the NFL in total offense and 2nd in fewest sacks allowed with 17, setting a franchise record. Baltimore also led the NFL in time of possession and set team records for completion percentage (62.6%), third down conversions (96), fourth-down percentage (72.7%) and fewest turnovers (23). The offensive line helped quarterback Steve McNair set a team record for pass completion percentage (63.0%) and most passes without an interception (162). In addition, left tackle Jonathan Ogden was voted to his 10th-straight Pro Bowl. Prior to joining the staff in Baltimore, Roman enjoyed a four-year coaching stint with the Houston Texans, serving as the team s tight ends ( ) and quarterbacks coach ( ). As tight ends coach, Roman tutored Billy Miller, who led the Texans with 91 receptions over two seasons. He also guided former 2002 NFL first round draft pick David Carr, who had his best season under Roman in 2004 when he passed for 3,531 yards and an 83.1 quarterback rating. Roman launched his coaching career with the Carolina Panthers in 1995, the team s inaugural season in the NFL, when he was named the strength and conditioning assistant/defensive quality control coach, while also working with the defensive backs and the linebackers. He then moved to the offensive side of the ball as Carolina s offensive quality control coach for two seasons ( ) before assuming the role of offensive assistant for the 1999 and 2000 campaigns. As the team s offensive assistant, he worked with both the run-and-pass game strategy and implementation, helping the Panthers finish 2nd in the NFL in passing offense and 5th in yards per rush. Roman worked as the team s assistant offensive line coach in his final season with the Panthers in STARTING FAST Getting off to a fast start was something the 49ers capitalized on throughout the 2010 season. 9 RED HOT IN THE RED ZONE zone opportunities is so important, said TE Vernon Davis. Alex has a poise about him when he gets in the red zone. He has confidence in us as receivers to make the play and we know he is going to put the ball where it needs to go. A team s success can be directly attributed to their success in the red zone. 10 THE D.C. - VIC FANGIO With an extensive coaching background that spans over two decades, Vic Fangio is in his first season as defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers. Fangio enters his 25th season coaching in the NFL, which includes 11 years of experience as a defensive coordinator for three NFL teams - Carolina ( ), Indianapolis Colts ( ) and Houston Texans ( ). As a defensive coordinator, Fangio has directed defensive units that have led the NFL or ranked among the top three teams in seven or more major statistical categories. Fangio most recently served a one year stint as the defensive coordinator for Stanford in 2010, where he led one of the nation s top defenses. He was unanimously selected as college football s Defensive Coordinator of the Year by three different media entities. The Cardinal defense made significant strides under Fangio s guidance, improving from a 90th ranked unit nationally in 2009 to a defense that ranked in the top-25 nationally in six major defensive categories in Stanford finished the year ranked 10th in scoring defense (17.4 points/game), 11th in sacks (36), 16th in passing defensive efficiency (112.79), 19th in rushing defense (120.8 yards/game), t-19th in interceptions (18) and 21st in total defense (322.8 yards/game). Within the Pac-10 Conference, the Cardinal improved from 8th to 1st in both scoring defense and sacks, while moving from 9th to 2nd in takeaways and yards allowed. In addition, Stanford posted three Pac-10 shutouts on the year; marking the first time ever the Cardinal had held opponents scoreless in three contests in a single season. Prior to joining Stanford, Fangio served on the Baltimore Ravens coaching staff from as a special assistant to the head coach and linebackers coach. In his four seasons with Baltimore, the Ravens led the NFL in total defense in 2006, ranked second in 2008 and third in Fangio spent the previous four seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Houston Texans ( ). His 2002 defense ranked eighth in the AFC overall and fourth in the conference in pass defense. The Texans scored three defensive touchdowns against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field in Week 14 en route to a 24-6 victory. In 2004, the Texans set a team record and ranked fifth in the NFL with 22 interceptions, five of which were returned for touchdowns. Houston did not allow a touchdown for 13 straight quarters from Week 13 to 16, posting the longest stretch by any team in the league that season. Fangio served as the defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts from The Colts posted a 13-3 record in Fangio s first season after going just 6-26 the previous two years. Indianapolis won its first division title in 15 years, while the Colts defense improved from last to 15th under his guidance. The 2000 Colt defense tallied 42 sacks and made strides in all other statistical categories. In 1995, Fangio was named defensive coordinator of the expansion Carolina Panthers under head coach Dom Capers. The Panthers tied for seventh in total defense and ranked sixth in scoring defense, 10th in rushing defense, fifth in takeaways and second in defensive passer rating in its inaugural season. In 1996, the Panthers won the NFC West title and reached the NFC Championship game in just their second year of existence. The Panther defense allowed just 218 points on the year, ranking second in the NFL. Carolina also yielded just five touchdowns and 56 points after halftime for the entire season, breaking an NFL record set by the 1985 Chicago Bears that still stands today. The Panthers defense also led the NFL in sacks and 3rd down defense. Fangio s defense featured three All-Pro linebackers in Lamar Lathon, Sam Mills and Kevin Greene. KEEPIN IT UNDER 100 The 49ers take pride in having a tough run defense as is evident by the run-stopping numbers put up since For just the 5th time in franchise history and first time since 1997, the 49ers defense did not allow a 100-yd. rusher during the 2010 season (1997, 1990, 1971 and 1967). 11 Through his first four years in the NFL, LB Patrick Willis has accumulated the following accolades - 4 Pro Bowl appearances, 3 All-Pro selections, 2 NFL Alumni Linebacker of the Year Awards and NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. On May 5, 2010, the 49ers and arguably the game s best defensive player agreed on a 5-year contract extension, ensuring that he will be donning the Red & Gold through the 2016 season. We will bring the sixth championship back here and I m just thankful today to know that I will be able to be here to do that, said Willis. Willis 2010 Season Highlights: Named a starter for the 2011 Pro Bowl. Led the team with 153 tackles, ranked 2nd in sacks (6.0), 2nd in TFLs (7) and 4th in passes defensed (7). There s a lot of different leaders, said Willis, whether it s vocal, whether it s physical, but I ve always been the type of person I won t ask you to do something that I can t do. I won t get on you for something that I won t do myself. I will speak at times, when it s necessary, but I don t believe in talking just because you can. I believe in doing it the right way. I respect them as I want those guys to respect me. If it s necessary, then yes, I will. And vice versa. Willis plays the game with a fury and a passion that no one can match. His determination to work harder than everybody else day in and day out has been noticed by people throughout the NFL. If he stays on the path that he s on right now, he will land in the Hall of Fame, said NBC analyst Cris Collinsworth. In my opinion, I think he s going to be on the best to play the game with his size, strength and speed combination and how he plays the game, said Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson. He s got that deadly sting. I love Patrick Willis. I love the way he plays ball. He plays ball just like me. He s the best defensive player in the league at his position - not to take anything away from Ray Lewis; I think eventually he will be better than Ray Lewis. I think we play the game with the same passion. He s a freak. He s 245, (runs a) 4.3. He s a perfect prototype for a linebacker. And to think Willis is only 25 years old and just finished his fourth season in the league. People think they ve seen the best I ve had to offer and they haven t by far, said Willis. There so much more improvement in my game that I have to get to and I m willing to work every day to get to that point, but the best is yet to be seen, by myself or my teammates or this team in general.
