6 Section 4 Media Information 2009 Conference USA Women s Basketball Championship Fogelman Arena New Orleans, La. 1. Credentials request. Credentials to the Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship are issued by the Conference office. Media members that plan to cover the event should file a credential request form on the league's official website at conferenceusa.com. 1. Log on to ConferenceUSA.com 2. Click on media center 3. Click on Credentials 4. Select 2009 C-USA women's basketball championship 5. Complete online credential request process The credential application deadline is Thursday, Feb. 26, All credentials must be picked up at Fogelman Arena. Media need to enter through the Southwest doors of the arena. CREDENTIALS AND PARKING PASSES WILL NOT BE MAILED. 2. Credential Distribution. Individuals must present government-issued photo identification in order to receive credentials. Media Hospitality. Complimentary media meals will be available to credentialed individuals only and will be served inside Fogelman Arena on the upper Northeast concourse. Meals will be available an hour-an-half prior to each session on game days. 4. All media representatives are responsible for booking and paying for their own room, tax and incidental charges. 5. Media Parking. Parking is available at the Loyola Parking Garage near Fogelman Arena. Media entrance will be through the Southwest doors of the Arena. Video trucks will be assigned parking by the media coordinator. Media members must request parking on the online credential application. Parking passes, if granted, will be provided at credential distribution. 6
7 Section 4 Media Information 6. Media Seating. Media will be provided courtside or concourse seating. Seating is assigned by the Conference office on a priority basis with radio and television stations originating live broadcasts of the Championship receiving priority seats at mid-court. Writers representing daily newspapers that regularly cover the participating teams receive next priority. All others are assigned seats as available. 7. Media Services. All-Tournament Team. After the championship game, a Conference USA staff member will coordinate the selection of a five-person all-tournament team, including the most outstanding player. Box Scores. Media will receive halftime and final boxes at courtside and in the media workroom. Sign-Up Sheet. A sign-up sheet to receive specified media information via will be posted in the media workroom. Flip Cards. Conference USA and the host institution will print and distribute a flip card to the working media. Media Guides/Postseason Guides. Conference USA and each participating institution will provide at least 40 media guides and 50 postseason guides in the media workroom. Quotes. Typed quotes shall be distributed to the media following each post game interview session. Updated notes (e.g., team notes, tournament notes/records, etc.) shall also be distributed to the media following games. Releases. Conference USA will produce a women s basketball postseason notebook and other pertinent materials prior to the championship. Runners (for television production). Spotters, runners or statisticians are also available for a fee. Contact Richie Weaver of Tulane Athletics Communications at at least 14 days prior to the championship to request such a service. Fees are payable directly to the person providing the service. 8. Media Timeouts. NCAA rules shall be followed for timeouts. Media timeouts will be used only in games that involve electronic media (radio/tv). Coaches of both participating teams shall be informed of the media time-out plan, including the length of the time-outs, upon arrival at the game site. 9. Phone Lines. Conference USA will install one telephone line for each radio station originating live, play-by-play coverage of the championship. Media outlets desiring their own telephones should order that service by contacting Kevin Wilkinson ( ) with Tulane Athletics Communications two-weeks prior to the Championship. All of the phones will have local, toll-free and credit card access, capable of receiving calls and restricted from direct access to toll calling, 900 lines, incoming collect calls and other special service. 10. Press Conferences. All post-game press conferences will be held under Section H of the arena seating level in Fogelman Arena. 11. Cooling-Off Period. A cooling-off period has been established for coaches to be with their studentathletes in the locker room following the game. The period begins when the head coach reaches the locker room area immediately following the game. The winning coach will get 10-minutes, while the non-winning coach will receive a 15-minute cooling off period. 7
8 Section 4 Media Information 12. Obligation of the Head Coach. Regardless of any personal regular-season radio or television contracts, the head coach is obligated first to the media staffing the tournament and must report to the interview room immediately after the cooling-off period expires. After fulfilling this commitment to the media staffing the tournament, the coach and student-athletes may participate in other interviews. 13. Sports Information. Each Sports Information Director is responsible for providing at least 40 media guides and 50 postseason guides. Teams advancing in tournament action are to provide updates statistics and notes by 10 a.m. CT the following day. Every effort will be made by Conference USA and Tulane to assist in the duplication of the statistics. It is the responsibility of the Sports Information Director from each participating institution to see that the postgame guidelines are followed. Appointed by joint consultation between the Conference USA and the host media coordinator, a pool reporter may accompany Conference USA s media coordinator to the officials locker room to receive an interpretation in order to enhance the public s understanding of activities that occurred when a game includes a potential fighting situation that results in a technical foul and/or ejection of a coach or student-athlete. 15. Radio Broadcasts. Radio stations wishing to originate live, play-by-play coverage of any game in the Conference USA Women s Basketball Championship should direct that request to the Conference USA media staff by WEDNESDAY, FEB. 25. Conference USA will install one telephone line for each radio station originating live, play-by-play coverage of the championship. If a station requires more than one line, please contact Roger Dunaway ( ) or Kevin Wilkinson ( ) with Tulane Media Relations prior to the Championship. These phone lines will be located at courtside, while two ISDN lines will be available in the upper media press area (upper concourse). 16. Television and Mini Cams. Television stations shall have access to the floor while games are being played in each session to establish individual presence at the event, and videotape footage for highlights and news coverage. Television stations wishing to have access to the floor with games in progress need to be cleared through the Conference USA media staff. Videographers are limited to shooting game footage from a designated area at the baselines of the playing floor. For the semis and championship games, media affiliates will not be able to film courtside. However, you will be able to plug directly into the official broadcasting affiliate (CBS College Sports or ESPN) production truck for game highlights. 17. Website, Championship. Box Scores, statistics, recaps, quotes and a live stats/game-tracking feature for all Championship games will be available on the league's official website, ConferenceUSA.com, as well as Tulane s official website at Wireless and Internet. Fogelman Arena is a wireless facility. All working media and photographers will have access to this service in the media work room and/or courtside. A limited number of direct internet connections will also be provided, with photographers getting first choice. 8

11 Section 4 Media Information INTERVIEW POLICIES News conferences will be conducted immediately following each game. Conference USA and/or the host media coordinator will have the authority to designate and require any student-athlete to attend any news conference. All interviews at the facility shall occur in the media interview room or the locker room area. 1. Obligation of Coach. Regardless of any personal/institutional regular-season radio or television contracts, the coach is first obligated to the entire media staffing the tournament and must report to the interview room after the cooling-off period ends. After fulfilling this commitment to the media staffing the tournament, the coach and student-athletes may participate in other interviews. However, if requested by the Conference USA staff the head coach and/or student athlete may grant a postgame television interview to the official broadcasting network. A member of the women's basketball staff must attend the pre-championship meeting. 2. Locker Rooms. a. Game Days. The locker rooms will be CLOSED to the media but every effort must be made to assist the onsite media with interview request following each game and/or practice. It is up to the sports information director to assist with this interview process. b. Practice Days. A representative of each institution s sports information staff shall be at each open practice day and will be responsible for coordinating interview requests. 3. News Conferences. a. Postgame. Each head coach and a minimum of one first-team student-athletes will participate in post-game news conference. No more than three players should attend. Coaches and players will not be available prior to their post game interview session, except for the network televising the game. b. Cooling-Off Period. A cooling-off period has been established for a coach to be with the student-athletes in the locker room after each game. The period begins when the head coach reaches the locker room area. The period will be 10 minutes for the winning team; 15 minutes for the non-winning team. A coach may shorten the coolingoff period, but may not extend it. c. Format. The postgame interview sessions should adhere to the following 20-minute format: (1) Two (2) minutes maximum for an overview by the head coach. (2) 10 minutes maximum for questions of the student-athletes. (3) Dismiss the student-athletes when there are no more questions. (4) Eight (8) minutes maximum for questions for the head coach. d. Order of Appearance. The winning coach and players shall be scheduled in the interview room before the non-winning coach and players, except after the championship game, where the order will be reversed. e. Holding Area. A holding area will NOT be provided for coaches and players. 4. Cameras and Recorders. All electronic media, recording the proceedings in the interview room, may use its own equipment to film the news conferences. 5. Telephone Interviews. Coaches or student-athletes may not conduct interview requests via telephone until 30 minutes after the cooling-off period ends, or until their postgame obligations to all attending media have been met, whichever comes later. 11
12 Section 4 Media Information PRINT PHOTOGRAPHY POLICIES 1. Photographers on the floor level are restricted to the photographers box at each end of the playing court except as noted below: NOTE: At no time may photographers work from directly behind the official scorer s table, media press row or team benches. 2. A photographer assigned to the second photo row may sit on an elevation no more than nine inches high. 3. No tripods may be placed on or beside the playing floor. 4. A still photographer shall not utilize a flash attached to a camera or to any other courtside location. 5. Couriers/assistants and technicians shall not photograph game action. 6. NO photography equipment (i.e., cameras, strobes) shall be attached to the backboard or goal standards, unless approved by Conference USA. 7. Cameras shall NOT be mounted or positioned on the playing floor. Cameras must either be mounted on the backboard or goal standard or held by the photographer. 8. The Conference USA may approve requests to place photography equipment in upper facility areas or under the first row of press tables opposite the official scorer s table. Cameras may not protrude more than four inches from under the draping and soft lens protectors must be used. 9. Cameras shall not be installed over the playing court unless pre-approved by Conference USA. If approval is granted, the camera shall be double secured and in position 24 hours prior to the start of the first game. 10. Photographers will not be admitted to any potential working position over the playing court from 60 minutes prior to the first game of a session until 30 minutes after the second game. 11. The Conference USA media staff will make every effort to accommodate all requests for photograph passes. Each participating team is allowed to designate one official photographer who may photograph only games in which that team participates. 12. Photographers must display the provided credentials at all times to gain access to the floor and photography areas. 12
13 Section 6 Site Information FOGELMAN ARENA Avron B. Fogelman Arena, one of the most historic facilities in college basketball, recently celebrated its 75th year as the home of Green Wave basketball. While Fogelman Arena stands in the same frame and has much the same outside appearance as old Tulane Arena, that s where the similarities end. The inside of the arena has enjoyed a major facelift, with all-new seating, a reconditioned playing floor, improved locker rooms, a new scoreboard, a new lobby and entrance area, as well as new concession and novelty stands throughout the arena. Fogelman Arena hosted the C-USA Women s Basketball Championship in

18 Section 6 Site Information FOGELMAN DRIVING DIRECTIONS GETTING TO FOGELMAN ARENA From the West (Airport, Metairie, Kenner, Baton Rouge): Exit Interstate 10 East at the Airline/Tulane/Carrollton exit and follow signs to South Carrollton Avenue. Remain on Carrollton five traffic signals to South Claiborne Avenue and continue past Claiborne to the first u turn. Make the u turn and turn right on Claiborne. Remain on Claiborne one traffic signal to Broadway Street and turn right. Remain on Broadway two signals to Freret Street and turn left. Once getting into the campus area, Fogelman Arena is the third building on the left. From the East (Downtown, French Quarter, Slidell): Exit Interstate 10 West at US 90/South Claiborne Avenue (which exits left off the interstate). Remain on Claiborne seven traffic signals to Nashville Avenue and turn left. Stay on Nashville one traffic signal to Freret Street and turn right. Fogelman is on the right and the first building past the third traffic signal.
