Huntsman Center Scouting TCU TCU, ranked No. 24 in the latest Associated Press poll, leads the MWC with a 7-2 conference record. Helena Sverrisdottier leads the MWC with 5.0 assists per game with 13.4 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game. Emily Carter leads the conference in free-throw percentage (.860) and three-point field goal percentage (.442). Utah fell at TCU back on Jan. 9, Taryn Wicijowski (16 points) and Janita Badon (11 points) each scored in double figures for Utah while Carter (14 points) and Starr Crawford (15 points) were also in double figure scoring. Last Time Out Taryn Wicijowski and Kalee Whipple each scored over 20 points to lead the Utah women s basketball team to a hard-fought victory at Colorado State on Wednesday evening. Down by three, with 2:42 left, Whipple s three-point shot tied the score for the ninth time of the game, Utah hit five of eight free throws in the final 1:26 to clinch the victory after CSU was forced into fouling the Utes. Whipple and Halie Sawyer each went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line during the stretch. Sawyer had three key rebounds in the final minutes. Utah shot 51-percent from the floor, led by an 8-of-12 performance from Wicijowski. Whipple Named MWC Player of the Week Utah senior Kalee Whipple has been named the Mountain West Conference Women s Basketball Co-Player of the Week. It is Whipple s seventh career weekly honor. Whipple scored 20 points, including 11 in the second half, to lead the Utes to a road victory over Colorado State. The Hiko, Nev., native made 8-of-16 (.500) shots from the floor, including a game-tying three-pointer with 2:42 left to tie the score at Whipple went on to clinch the win for the Utes by hitting two free throws with 29 seconds remaining. Defense is Key The Utes have one of the strongest defenses in the country, holding teams to 55.2 points per game, which ranks 18th nationally (through 2/7). The Utes are ranked 30th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (35.7) and are 47th in rebound margin (4.9). Utah has held opponents under 55 points in nine games this season. The Utes are also fifth in the country in personal fouls per game (13.3). Whipple Takes Center Stage Kalee Whipple leads the Utes and is second in the MWC with 16.8 points per game. She has scored over 20 points in seven games this season with four double-doubles. Whipple has also been solid down the stretch at the free-throw line for the Utes. Highlights include hitting the game-tying three-pointer against Oregon, and the game-tying three-pointer against Colorado State before clinching the game with a pair of free throws. Whipple was named the MWC Player of the Week on Feb. 8 for her performance against Colorado State. Whipple is moving up in a number of areas in the Utah record book. She is seventh all-time in scoring (1,728 points) and ranks third in threepoint field goals made (214). For more, please see page 5. Whipple is also ranked in the top 10 in MWC history in points scored. Slammin Sawyer Halie Sawyer, who finished fifth in the MWC with 7.6 rebounds per game a year ago, is averaging 7.9 rebounds per game this season for the Utes and is fifth in the MWC in the category. She has led Utah in rebounding in nine games this year. Sawyer also has 25 blocked shots (1.2 per game), which is sixth in the MWC. She recently moved into the top 10 all-time at Utah in blocks (83), offensive rebounds (191) and defensive rebounds (392). Youth Is Served Utah has one of its youngest teams in years, with six freshmen and two sophomores gracing the roster. Two underclassmen have started every game - sophomore Janita Badon and freshman Taryn Wicijowski - while freshmen Iwalani Rodrigues (three games) and Rachel Messer (11 games) have also started. Badon is in the top 10 in the MWC in assists (4.7, 3rd), steals (2.4, 2nd) and defensive rebounds (4.8, 6th). She has scored in double figures in 11 games this year, with a career-high 29 points against Oregon. Badon had her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds against SMU. Her career-high nine assists came vs. Air Force. Wicijowski earned preseason MWC Freshman of the Year honors after spending the summer with the Canadian Junior National Team. She is one of three players (and the only underclassman) in the top 10 of the MWC standings in both scoring (14.2 points) and rebounding (6.8 rebounds). She is first in the MWC and 15th nationally in field goal percentage (.562). Wicijowski has scored 20 or more points five times (Santa Clara, Westminster, Oregon, Air Force and Colorado State) and has had three doubledoubles this season (Minnesota, Weber State and ). She has scored in double figures in 17 of Utah s 21 games. Rodrigues has 3.2 points per game. She scored a career-high 10 points against Utah Valley. Freshman Rachel Messer is averaging 3.2 points and had a career-high 11 points against Air Force. She is second on the team with 18 three-pointers. Freshman Diana Rolniak has 16 blocked shots (including five vs. Utah Valley) and is averaging 2.4 rebounds per game. Home Court Advantage Utah is 11-2 at the Huntsman Center this season. The Utes had a 19-game winning streak at home snapped against UNLV on Jan. 16.

3 vs. Ranked Teams Utah has faced three ranked teams this year. Although 0-3, the Utes have had several strong performances. Utah faces its fourth ranked team of the year against TCU on Wednesday. No. 2 Stanford downed Utah, 60-41, back on Nov. 27. The Utes played well against the Cardinal, holding them to their lowest point total since scoring 58 win a win over Cal in February, Senior All-American center Jane Appel was held to just two points and six rebounds in the contest. Utah held as much as a six-point lead against Louisville before falling by five, TCU defeated Utah in Fort Worth on Jan. 9, SMU was receiving votes in the coaches poll when it played Utah on Jan. 2, with the Utes winning Utes Selected Third in MWC Preseason Poll; Whipple and Wicijowski Earn Honors Utah was tabbed to finish third in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll while Kalee Whipple was chosen to the preseason all-conference team. Freshman Taryn Wicijowski was picked as the Preseason Freshman of the Year. San Diego State was selected as the preseason favorite. The Aztecs received 25 first-place votes and 240 total points. TCU collected three firstplace votes and finished second with 216 points, followed by Utah with 185 points. New Mexico (168 points) placed fourth, followed by Wyoming (121 points), BYU (109 points), UNLV (97 points), Colorado State (57 points) and Air Force (31 points). Utes Host 2011 NCAA First and Second Rounds The University of Utah has been named as a host institution for the 2011 NCAA Women s Basketball First and Second Rounds, the NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Committee announced. The games will be held March 19 through 22nd in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. It will mark the second time that Utah has hosted the preliminary rounds. In 2001, the Utes defeated Fairfield and Iowa in the Huntsman Center in opening round play to advance to their first Sweet Sixteen. On the Radio Utah can be found on either KALL 700 AM or KNRS 570 AM throughout the season. Playby-play is provided by Chris Tunis. Utes Sign Five for Utah announced the signings of five players to NLI s. Ciera Dunbar (guard, Elko HS, Nevada), Allison Gida (point guard, Ashland HS, Oregon), Brittany Knighton (forward, Oregon City HS, Oregon) and Amy Krommenhoek (guard, American Fork HS, Utah) will join Utah for the campaign. The Utah could not overcome a strong Utah State start, falling in their season opener to the Aggies, Kalee Whipple led Utah with 21 points while Taryn Wicijowski, who earned her first career start, was also in double figures with 12 points. Halie Sawyer pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds for the Utes. The Aggies came out firing on all cylinders, taking a 13-point lead, 18-5, through the first six minutes of the first half. They would take as much as a 22-point lead in the half and led at halftime behind 62.1 percent shooting, led by 16 points from Amber White. Whipple had 14 points for the Utes in the half. Utah battled back in the second half, outscoring Utah State and coming within eight points as the minutes ticked off. Each team turned the ball over before Whipple was fouled and hit both free throws to increase Utah s lead to four with 11 seconds left. A second-half surge accompanied by a double-double from Kalee Whipple lifted Utah to a victory over Wyoming on Wednesday evening. Whipple had 25 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Janita Badon was also in double figures with 10 points, adding eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Wyoming took as much as an eight-point lead in the first half, but the Utes strong defense kept them in the game. Iwalani Rodrigues hit a jumper at the buzzer to help get the momentum started for the second-half rally, as Wyoming led at halftime. Whipple started the second half with a three-point basket, followed by a breakaway layup to tie the game at Over the first eight minutes of the half, the Utes took a nine-point lead, 40-31, with a 20-9 run. Badon had three breakaway layups in the run along with three steals. Wyoming came back with a 9-2 run of its own to regain the lead, 43-42, with 5:50 remaining. Utah quickly rallied 30 seconds later to take the lead for good behind a three-point play as Whipple was fouled on her layup and made the subsequent free-throw. Strong defense from both teams defined the final minutes of the game. Wyoming s Hillary Carlson made the final Cowgirl basket of the game with 2:12 left to put the team within three, Whipple s layup with a minute left put Utah up by five and Wyoming was forced to foul the Utes down the stretch.
