9 Last Game vs. Utah State Dec. 31, 2016 Air Force was just on the short end of a hard-fought Mountain West contest at Utah State, falling 65-62, on New Year s Eve at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Freshman Mariah Forde led the Falcons with 21 points. Trailing by as many as 12 in the third quarter, the Falcons fought back to take the lead in the fourth quarter was tied at with six minutes to play. Rachel Brewster broke the tie by scoring a bucket in the fi fth minute of the fourth quarter and Utah State (8-5, 1-1 MW) held the lead the rest of the way out. Down by four, junior Cortney Porter hit a fallaway three, with a Utah State defender in her face, to pull the Falcons to within one at with 23 seconds left. Eliza West hit a pair of free throw s with three seconds left to put the Aggies up by three. Porter had a chance to tie the game but her three-point attempt at the buzzer fell short. Forde scored 17 of her points in the secondhalf, including 11 in a row. She hit a three at the end of her 11-point run to put the Falcons up early in the fourth. Forde was joined by classmate Mariah got hot for us in the second half, Air Force head coach Chris Gobrecht said. She defi - nitely shot us back into the game. Kassady Huffman and Porter joined Forde in double-digits scoring. Porter, who grew up an hour away in Ogden, scored 12 points, adding three assists and two steals. Despite being out-sized in the post, Air Force played Utah State to an even draw in rebounding. Junior Dee Bennett had her secondstraight 13-rebound effort to lead the Falcons on the boards. Air Force shot 43.4 percent from the fi eld, its second-best percentage of the season. I though Dee has been very good on the boards for us and Cortney Porter played a good game, Gobrecht said. Air Force played strong in the fi rst quarter, taking a lead early. The Falcons had a sluggish second quarter that allowed Utah State to jump ahead at halftime. An 11-0 run by the Aggies highlighted the quarter. The Falcons got back in the game with a 20-9 scoring advantage in the third quarter. An 8-0 run and a pair of three s by Forde to close out the quarter made it a one-point game at headed into the fourth. I think we learned something today about what it takes to be a good team, Gobrecht said. A lot of this is transitioning from the program that we ve been to a program that we want to become. Utah State got the lead because of offensive rebounding and turnovers in the second quarter. I thought we did a much better job of not allowing those in the second half. We played solid in the second half. If we can clean up those lapses, I think we ll start to see more wins.
