3 Gameday FIREWORKS The Runnin Rebels have arguably the best pregame show in all of college basketball. Originally, just swirling spot lights, a loud pep band and excitable cheerleaders, the pregame show at the Thomas & Mack Center has evolved through the years. The Runnin Rebels get the red-carpet treatment as the team is introduced. The carpet is rolled out onto the floor, while strobe lights topped off by a video and fireworks show get the place rockin. The exhibition uses 60 pyrotechnic effects, 24 strobe lights, 36 other lights, takes four to five hours to set up and a crew of seven to pull it off at game time. DICK CALVERT VOICE OF THE REBELS A familiar sound to UNLV fans of all ages, Dick Calvert, the "Voice of the Rebels," is in his fifth decade as the game announcer for UNLV Athletics. Calvert, who calls UNLV football, basketball, men's & women's soccer, baseball games and other events at Sam Boyd Stadium, Thomas & Mack Center, Cox Pavilion, Peter Johann Memorial Field and Earl E. Wilson Stadium, has also served as the game announcer for the Mountain West Conference, Pac-12 Conference, West Coast Conference and Western Athletic Conference basketball tournaments, the Las Vegas Bowl, the NBA Vegas Summer League, the FIBA Americas tournament, the USA Basketball Senior Men's National Team and the Las Vegas 51s AAA Professional Baseball Club. Additionally, the longtime university staffer works many MW Championships hosted by UNLV and is the official starter for a number of univer- sity and NCAA golf tournaments. In fact, Calvert annually works over 125 local events. He was inducted into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame in June The former play-by-play broadcaster is also one of the most experienced commenta- tors of American professional soccer, having served 18 seasons in both the North American and Major Soccer Leagues. Calvert has had the privilege of working in three World Cups. The Las Vegas resident retired from broadcasting and the UNLV Athletics Department after serving as the director of broadcasting, director of athletic marketing for Olympic sports and director of athletic facilities/operations. Calvert and his wife Anne have four adult children and are the thg proud grandparents of 10 and greatgrandparents of four. NEW LIGHTS The famous Runnin Rebel pregame show at the Thomas & Mack Center during UNLV men s basketball games is being enhanced this season with help from Production Resource Group. The enhancements coincide with the arena s 30th anniversary. The company that started the basketball entrance show back in 1983 when the Thomas & Mack Center opened, Advanced Entertainment Services, is back again this year to direct, create and control all of the elements that have made Runnin Rebel introductions special for years. However, new for this year, the facility and AES have added 12 PRG Bad Boys (lighting fixtures) to the existing light and fireworks show. The Bad Boy was voted Entertainment Product of the Year in 2010 for not only being the brightest professional lighting fixture with the most features, but also because it is the greenest (lowest power consumption and lowest release of BTU s) in the entertainment industry. The arena and PRG have also enhanced the audio for games by adding eight new Outline GTO Subs. These GTO subs are located underneath the lower Mezzanine seats to enhance the audio experience for fans. Two new 20k Barco projectors have also been added and will project on The Rebellion, UNLV s student section. PEP BAND Numbering more than 80 strong, the UNLV Pep Band, which began in its present form in 1978, is a big part of Runnin Rebel basketball. Nothing gets the crowd on its feet at the Thomas and Mack Center faster than the sounds of Win with the Rebels and Viva Las Vegas. The UNLV Pep Band, directed by Tony LaBounty, also performs at other university-related events as well as select convention appearances. 4 Gameday CHEER AND DANCE Two of the nation s best-known spirit squads, the UNLV Cheerleaders and the UNLV Dance Team (Rebel Girls) are fixtures at Runnin Rebel basketball games. The teams perform at various UNLV Athletics events, conventions and shows, and volunteer their time to appear at numerous events throughout the Las Vegas community. The cheerleaders also devote time to instructing the UNLV Rebel Starzz - a group of young dancers ages 3-16 that performs at games throughout the year. ATTENDANCE LAST year AT TMC WAS A 22-yEAR HIGH The season saw the largest Thomas & Mack Center crowds in 22 years. UNLV's average of 15,729 over 18 regular-season home games was the program's highest average since For the fifth straight year, the program found itself among the nation's top 25 in home attendance (14th in the country and No. 1 in both the Mountain West and among all programs on the West Coast (states of California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington). HEy REB Embodying the Rebel spirit of the University he promotes, UNLV's Hey Reb made his debut in 1983 and received a makeover in Named one of 12 All-American Mascots, he competed for the title of 2004 Capital One Mascot of the Year and made a strong showing by coming in second in online voting. No stranger to national television, however, Hey Reb also appeared in two memorable ESPN SportsCenter commercials. THE REBELLION Las Vegas' newest headliner, The Rebellion came on to the scene during the season. Over the previous five seasons, the student section at UNLV s Thomas & Mack Center had grown into one of the largest student sections in the West. But two years ago, the birth of The Rebellion put the student section on the national scene. With a Las Vegas-theme to its signs and swagger as well as the creation of "Mozilla" (a giant fat head of former Runnin Rebel Mike Moser that included a torso and movable arms with a 20-foot reach), The Rebellion positioned itself as one of the most creative and entertaining student sections in the nation. (The "Mozilla" concept has since been copied by colleges throughout the nation.) Fans have come to expect the unexpected from the trend-setting Rebellion. But one thing is for certain, opponents at the Thomas & Mack Center certainly Fear The Stache. CHET BuCHANAN ON-COuRT EMCEE Chet Buchanan is in his eighth season as the oncourt emcee of the Runnin' Rebels. Buchanan is one of the top on-air personalities in Las Vegas with his morning radio show on 98.5 KLUC. He is also a regular on television both locally and nationally and is one of Las Vegas' most in-demand emcees to host events (he is involved with numerous organizations across the nation including Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, Miss Universe and Miss America pageant events, Boys & Girls Clubs of Henderson & Las Vegas, HELP of Southern Nevada, and Susan G Komen among others). Chet also spends many weekends travelling the Western U.S. as a highly requested charity host and auctioneer. His annual Holiday Toy Drive raises thousands of toys and bikes, and hundreds of thousands of dollars for Southern Nevada families. Originally from Seattle, Buchanan is an avid sports fan and loves his Rebels. 75

5 Pregame Show By Mark Wallington UNLV Athletics Media Relations AND NOW... Two words that start it all: clear floor... drop lights... cue band... start dancers... roll fireworks... and get ready for the greatest pregame show in all of college basketball. The Voice of the Rebels takes everyone in the Thomas & Mack Center through 2 minutes and 40 seconds of excitement that gets the players introduced and the crowd on its feet. Public address announcer Dick Calvert is your host for the spectacular and has been since its inception in the mid-1970s. Originally, the pregame show was just swirling spot lights, a loud pep band and excitable cheerleaders getting things rolling during player introductions. We wanted to add some pizzazz, give it a touch of Vegas, said Dominic Clark, UNLV sports information director at the time. When we saw the affect it had on spectators and visiting teams, we lengthened it. As the team became more known, so did too, its university s pregame show. Fans came earlier. Reporters called. Photographers set up to capture the spectacle on film. All of this was before the Thomas & Mack Center when the Rebels were running the floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center. It was a natural progression for a team that was becoming big time, said Calvert. Basketball people across the country were talking about the team in the desert. Apparently the UNLV athletic brain trust had to wing it because there was nothing else like it in sports. We were pioneers, said Clark. No one else had anything so elaborate and it just continued to expand. The pregame show continued to expand and arouse the Thomas & Mack Center faithful. At the same time, a great affect on the visiting team became quite noticeable as well. The other teams were intimidated by it all, said The Runnin Rebels have enjoyed the red carpet treatment since moving to the Thomas & Mack Center in Clark. Sometimes they were shell shocked even after the game started and wouldn t score a point for 10 minutes while the Rebels ran up and down the floor. A visiting coach once told Sports Illustrated that the pregame show was worth 10 points to UNLV. The pregame show has grown so big and boisterous that visiting teams often duck it completely. Teams coming in here for the first time would get caught by surprise, Calvert said. But coaches in the conference got smart and started pulling their teams off the court so they wouldn t get intimidated. (former Georgetown coach) John Thompson learned always to take his team out. The Runnin Rebels move into their state-ofthe-art arena allowed for more additions to the show. Calvert now announced the rolling out of the red carpet and the light show became more intricate with strobe effects. And things got really wild with the introduction of fireworks. Several years later, former TMC director of operations Mike Enoch decided it was time to go all out. He worked with Matt Dillingham of Advanced Entertainment Services on developing an indoor pyrotechnic light show and in 1986 the sparks really flew. Dillingham, who is the president of the company, has since worked with numerous professional teams in the NBA and NHL but said none can duplicate the excitement and breadth of the Rebels show. A lot of professional teams try to duplicate what UNLV does but don t get close to it, Dillingham said. I know a lot of people who have come to games just to see the pregame show. The exhibition uses 60 pyrotechnic effects, 24 strobe lights, 48 other lights, takes four to five hours to set up and a crew of seven to pull it off at game time. Great care is taken to head off any safety problems. The basketball floor is cleared except for the cheerleaders and they stand in a protected area in the middle of the court. Plus, Dillingham said all fireworks are of the indoor variety, meaning they re not toxic. New for the season, Production Resource Group has gotten involved and added powerful new lights and projectors enhancing the overall show. After gaining a reputation in the West, the show was first broadcast in its entirety during a nationally televised game in the late-1980s. The UNLV fireworks show is second to none. 76

6 Mendenhall Center SPARKLING FACILITY OPENED ITS DOORS DURING SEASON In 2010, UNLV announced a plan by a group of donors to construct a new, state-of-the-art basketball practice facility on its campus. The group, led by Bob Mendenhall, also included Maury Gallagher, Bill Paulos, Bill Wortman and Hope Anstett. They saw the need for a new facility and together created a 501.c.3 corporation that built the new Mendenhall Center through Mendenhall's construction company. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Oct. 20, 2010, and the facility opened for use by the Runnin' Rebels during the season. "This is a huge addition to UNLV Athletics and the basketball program," UNLV head men's basketball coach Dave Rice said. "We really appreciate the generosity of this gift and the interest in our program by these individuals." The Mendenhall Center is attached to the south side of the Cox Pavilion and has a total of 38,000 square feet of space on three levels. Included are two basketball courts, an academic area as well as a film room, locker rooms, athletic training, strength and conditioning and equipment areas. "This is a great day for our athletics program as well as our university," former UNLV Athletics Director Jim Livengood said when the project was announced. "We are launching a project that will be a major asset to UNLV. The generosity of our UNLV's new state-of-the-art basketball practice facility has a total of 38,000 square feet of space on three levels. donors is a testament to the excitement and enthusiasm that exists in this city and with our athletics program." "Basketball has been a major `friend raiser' for UNLV for years," said UNLV President Neal Smatresk. "In this fiscally challenging time for UNLV, we could not have done this without this generous gift. This facility will help take the Runnin' Rebel basketball program to the next level of success and will build an enduring legacy for our fans." The facility was built entirely through the private sector and was gifted to the university. 77

7 Tarkanian CourT On Nov. 26, 2005, prior to the start of the game against Nevada, Reno, the court at the Thomas & Mack Center was named Tarkanian Court. During 19 years as UNLV's head basketball coach ( ), Jerry Tarkanian posted a (.829) record with the Runnin Rebels. Tarkanian took four teams to the NCAA Final Four, winning the national championship in 1990 in a runaway over Duke - the highest margin of victory in NCAA tournament championship game history. A member of the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame, Tarkanian, known to fans as the towel-chewing "Tark the Shark," never had a losing season while at UNLV. At UNLV, Tarkanian coached 13 players recognized as All-Americans a total of 20 times. He won 11 regular-season conference championships, seven conference tournament titles and made 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, including a string of nine straight. He was an eight-time conference coach of the year and was named UPI's National Coach of the Year in In the fall of 2013, Tarkanian was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame becoming the first player or coach from UNLV to be inducted. Then, on Oct. 30, 2013, a statue outside of the Thomas & Mack Center was dedicated as part of The Jerry Tarkanian Legacy Project, which exists to honor the career and contributions of Coach Tarkanian to the game of basketball, UNLV, and Southern Nevada. The project covered the funding of the design, creation and installation of the statue and will establish a scholarship fund in his name. All funding for the project has come from private donations. For more information or to donate, visit OneForTark.com. new ViSual equipment In September of 2008, the Thomas & Mack Center received a complete visual equipment overhaul. As part of the partnership between UNLV and ISP Sports (now known as IMG College), the arena received upgraded equipment, which was part of the $3.1 million in total upgrades to UNLV Athletics' facilities. The new equipment at the TMC includes a centerhung scoreboard and video display, which replaced Redd Vision. The old equipment had been in place since Also, the new equipment includes partial ring beam displays and a new scorer's table display. The new equipment has greatly enhanced the fan experience and presentation during events at the facility and has increased the visibility of UNLV's sponsors and advertisers. "This equipment allows us to enhance and create new interactive opportunities for our fans, event producers and corporate clients at every event the Thomas & Mack Center hosts," former UNLV Athletics Director Jim Livengood said. "These upgrades have added to the basketball offices MARILyN AND SI REDD BASKETBALL OFFICES The UNLV Athletics Department announced on March 9, 1993, a $350,000 donation by the late Si and Marilyn Redd, owners of Si Redd s Oasis, for the expansion and renovation of the men s and women s basketball offices within the Thomas & Mack Center. The offices, dubbed the Marilyn and Si Redd Basketball Offices were dedicated in a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sept. 1, The completion of the Marilyn and Si Redd Basketball Offices put the finishing touches on a $4 million renovation at the Thomas & Mack Center, which brought about increased food services, restroom and handicapped facilities, along with a new look. The Thomas & Mack Center, now in its 31st year of existence, has been ranked as high as the No. 2-grossing facility in the world. The center-hung video scoring display features four LED wide-screen video boards (8-feet high by 13-feet, 4-inches wide). The 10 mm pixel pitch of each board provides an amazing quality of viewing for spectators. Additionally, as part of the center-hung unit, there are four scoring/advertising displays (4-feet, 2-inches high by 16-feet, 8-inches wide with a 20 mm pixel pitch) and a Pro-Star advertising ring (2-feet, 1-inch high by 49-feet, 11-inches wide, also with a 20 mm pixel pitch). The partial ring beam (balcony fascia) display, which features four indoor Pro-Ad advertising displays, spans 80 percent of the balcony's rim. Each section is 3-feet high by 88-feet, 10-inches long that features LED displays with a 23 mm pixel pitch. Two custom scoreboards have also been installed behind each bas- the coaches, Marilyn Redd said in We want the coaches to have the type of facilities necessary to recruit the caliber of student-athlete needed to continue their outstanding performances. In November 1992, the Redds made a $1.7 million donation to the university for the upgrading of the Si Redd Room and for the construction of the Marilyn and Si Redd Sports Medicine Center. Si Redd was one of gaming s great characters and also one of the most well-known, knowledgeable people on the subject of coin operated devices. Known as the King of the Slot Machine, Si got his start in 1930 with a Bally pinball machine. Almost half a century later, he developed video poker, and went on to found what would become one of the most important, profitable businesses in the gaming world, International Game Technology. The UNLV men s basketball offices underwent another minor renovation in 2004, which was made possible by the former Runnin Rebel Basketball Club. Other equipment included is a 50-foot LED scorer's table with a 10 mm pixel pitch, new shot clocks for the backboards, which include 13-inch high digits for shot clock time and 7-inch digits for game time. Six wall-mounted locker room clocks displaying the game time have also been installed. A new outdoor marquee LED billboard on the corner of Tropicana and Swenson has also been added as well as a new baseball scoreboard at Wilson Stadium. provided the offices with an updated look along with a new player s lounge area. 8 Radio/TV JON SANDLER RADIO PLAy-By-PLAy Veteran play-by-play broadcaster Jon Sandler is in his 10th year behind the microphone for UNLV men s basketball. Sandler, 52, has a remarkable professional and educational background that provides him with a unique perspective on the air. He is an honors graduate of Stanford University and the University of Virginia School of Law. Sandler practiced corporate law in Palo Alto, Calif., from At that point, he decided to follow his love of sports and became the play-by-play voice of the Salinas Spurs baseball team in the California League. After working for two years in Single-A ball, (Salinas and the Palm Springs Angels), Sandler was hired as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Triple-A Las Vegas Stars prior to the 1993 season. During his seven-year stint as "The Voice of the Stars," Sandler quickly established himself as one of the bright young sportscasters in the country. He received numerous honors, including being selected as the Pacific Coast League's sole representative on the ESPN telecasts of the Triple-A World Series. Sandler also handled radio and television broadcast duties for the Las Vegas Thunder of the International Hockey League. Sandler s background has also allowed him to work in other areas of professional sports. He was the director of marketing, broadcasting and public relations for the Stars and the Thunder and in 2000, was named vice president of sales and marketing for the Las Vegas Outlaws of the XFL. Under his leadership, the Las Vegas XFL team was widely regarded as the most successful in the League. Sandler, who was also UNLV's radio play-by-play voice for its football team through the 2011 season, has previously handled the play-by-play duties for the UNLV baseball team, who won three straight Mountain West Tournament championships from with him calling the action. In June of 2012, he was given a five-year contract extension to continue calling Runnin' Rebel games. Sandler has also served as Vice President of Business Development and Regional Director, Las Vegas, for Clear Channel Spectacolor. He currently runs his own sales, marketing and media consulting business. Jon and his wife, Sherry, live in Las Vegas. ROBERT SMITH RADIO ANALyST Former Runnin' Rebel legend Robert Smith is in his fifth year as the UNLV men's basketball program's radio analyst. Smith, who starred at the school from , replaced Glen "Gondo" Gondrezick, who served in the position for 17 REBELS ON THE RADIO years and passed away in April of Smith, 58, a former teammate of Gondrezick's on the squad known as the "Hardway Eight," sits next to Jon Sandler to make up the Runnin' Rebels' radio broadcast team. Smith played point guard on UNLV's first team that reached the NCAA Final Four, in He remains UNLV's career leader in free throw percentage at 87.8 percent and he is also the single-season leader, making 92.5 percent of his tries during the season. He played seven years in the NBA, four more in the CBA and seven playing in France. Smith coached nine years at Las Vegas' Bishop Gorman High School, winning two state titles and finishing as runner-up twice, and was recently named head coach of Las Vegas' Quest Preparatory Academy. ESPN Radio is the home of UNLV Athletics. All Runnin Rebel games can be heard on Rebel flagship station ESPN 1100 AM & 98.9 FM (KWWN) in Las Vegas. Jon Sandler and Robert Smith will again bring fans all the action as part of a continuing partnership with Lotus Broadcasting, now in its 15th consecutive year. Each game begins with a full half-hour of pregame analysis and features. In addition to Runnin Rebel basketball, ESPN 1100 & 98.9 also carries UNLV football games. The UNLV IMG College Sports Network may also be heard in northern Nevada on KHIT 1450 AM serving the Reno area. Fans outside of the Silver State can hear all the action through a link at UNLV's official website UNLVRebels.com. A member of the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame's Class of 1987, he was also inducted into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame in June of He has also spent time in recent years coaching at the Andre Agassi Boys and Girls Club. Until the end of the season, Smith held the UNLV record for most consecutive free throws without a miss during a season with 27 ( season). He led the team in assists during the and seasons with 157 and 195, respectively, and he ranks ninth on the UNLV career assists chart with 445 during his three-year career. Robert and his wife of 40 years, Gloria, have three sons and a daughter: Robert Jr. (38), Jamaal (28), who played college basketball at New Mexico, Elijah (18) and Anika (32). "THE DAVE RICE RADIO SHOW" The Dave Rice Radio Show will air live on Sports 920 (AM) The Game from 12-1 p.m., then replay on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/98.9 FM from 6-7 p.m. this year. The show takes place on selected weekdays and originates from Brendan's Irish Pub at The Orleans Hotel & Casino. Hosted by Jon Sandler, UNLV IMG College's play-by-play voice of the Runnin' Rebels, the show features Rice, the head coach of the UNLV men's basketball team. Again this year, ESPN Radio 1100's Seat Williams will co-host the show and it will also include Robert Smith, former Runnin' Rebel legend and the men's basketball program's radio analyst. IN MEMORy OF "GONDO" Referred to fondly in the sports world simply as "Gondo," former UNLV men's basketball star, NBA player and longtime radio and TV announcer Glen Gondrezick will be remembered first and foremost as a true Runnin' Rebel. Gondrezick died in April of 2009 at the age of 53. He had undergone a heart transplant in Sept. of Gondrezick was one of Jerry Tarkian's first recruits at UNLV and lettered from He is the 17th-leading scorer in UNLV basketball history with 1,311 points and played a major role in the Runnin' Rebels advancing to their first NCAA Final Four in Gondrezick's determination and hustle made him an instant fan favorite, and his style of play almost always resulted in scrambles on the floor and collisions in the scorer's table while chasing down loose balls. His jersey number 25 was retired in a halftime ceremony at the Runnin' Rebels game against UCLA at the Thomas & Mack Center on Dec. 27, Gondrezick averaged 11.4 points per game during his four seasons in Las Vegas. He also is ninth (831) on the Runnin' Rebel career rebounds list. A 1977 honorable mention All-American and 1987 inductee into the Rebel Athletics Hall of Fame, he was a second round NBA draft pick and spent six seasons in the pro league - two ( ) with the New York Knicks and four ( ) with the Denver Nuggets. He averaged 5.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game over his career. Gondrezick would later return to UNLV, spending 17 seasons as a radio and television analyst for his alma mater. 79 "REB zone SPORTS TV SHOW" Starting this season, KVVU FOX5 is the new home of the official UNLV television coach s show. Kevin Bolinger joins UNLV head coach Dave Rice in the studio Sundays during the season for a unique half-hour of game reviews, previews and program features. The show airs Sundays on channel 5 at 11 p.m. The show will also be available on UNLV Athletics' YouTube channel, which may be found at UNLVRebels. com. BOB BLuM MEDIA CENTER The press room at the Thomas & Mack Center was renamed the Bob Blum Media Center during the season. A dedication ceremony took place on Nov. 17 just prior to the Runnin' Rebel game vs. Jacksonville State. Blum passed away in July 2012 at the age of 91. Affectionately known as the Dean of West Coast Broadcasters, he was one of the most beloved figures in Southern Nevada. He spent 27 seasons as the radio voice of the UNLV women's basketball team and he broadcast over 1,000 UNLV sporting events during his career, including men's basketball, football, baseball and softball.

9 TV, img college unlv TO APPEAR ON ESPN NETWORKS AND CBS SPORTS NETWORK The Mountain West Conference television package reaches a national audience through a combination of telecasts on ESPN Networks and CBS Sports Network. In , UNLV men's basketball will make at least eight appearances ESPN's family of networks -- at Arizona (ESPN2), at Fresno State (ESPN3), at San José State (ESPN3), at Colorado State (ESPNU or ESPN3), vs. Wyoming (ESPN3), vs. New Mexico (ESPN2), at Air Force (ESPN3) and at Nevada, Reno (ESPN3). The Runnin' Rebels will be on CBS Sports Network at least 14 times, including non-conference matchups against Arizona State and Illinois - both at the Thomas & Mack Center. Other games are scheduled to be televised locally by Cox 96 Las Vegas and on the new Mountain West (Digital) Network. The Mountain West Tournament will be televised by CBS Sports Network with the championship game on CBS. Governor Brian Sandoval awarded UNLV the trophy at June s state Board of Regents meeting in Reno. The Rebels won the all-encompassing competition with Nevada, Reno with a dominating score of 37.5 to In 2012 Sandoval announced the launch of the historic competition establishing a formal head-to-head athletic and academic challenge between longtime rivals -- the Rebels and Wolf Pack. In the first year of competition, the Rebels earned three points in volleyball, swimming and diving, men s and women s basketball, men s and women s tennis, men s and women s golf, softball, outdoor track and field and baseball, plus 1.5 points as the women s soccer team tied UNR.
