Smart is perhaps the most versatile player in college basketball, said Mike De- Courcy, college basketball columnist for Sporting News. He scores (14.0), rebounds (5.5) and passes (4.7 assists) at a high level. Efficiency aficionados lately have conceded Smart s accuracy as a shooter 51.8 percent from the field, 41.7 percent on threes has improved enough of late for them to appreciate him as well. The Cowboys rank third in scoring defense, third in FG percentage defense, third in blocked shots, third in steals, fourth in rebounding defense, fourth in defensive rebounds and fourth in defensive rebound percentage. The only defensive statistical category OSU doesn t excel in is threepoint FG percentage defense, where the Pokes rank seventh. Although there are still 15 regular-season games remaining, this Cowboy defense ranks among the school s best. Not since has an OSU squad allowed fewer than 60 points per game in a full season. This year s team is allowing just 58.3 ppg through 15 contests. Oklahoma State has had just three seasons when the team has blocked five or more shots per game; this year s team is averaging 5.1 bpg. OSU is currently allowing a.378 FG percentage on defense, which would rank in the top 10 in school history. The Cowboys have held six opponents to less than 36 percent shooting from the floor. OSU ranks 22nd nationally in field-goal percentage defense, 30th in scoring defense and 35th in scoring margin. Keeping it Under 50 Oklahoma State has held its opponent under the half-century mark six times this season, matching the most since when the Cowboys also held six opponents under 50 points. The Pokes limited South Florida and Missouri State to fewer than 50 points in back-to-back games, and accomplished that same feat against UT Arlington and Tennessee Tech. Three times since has OSU held consecutive opponents to under 50 points, and all three have occurred in the last two seasons. Balanced Scoring Oklahoma State is the only team in the Big 12 Conference that has three different players ranked among the league s top 11 in scoring. Markel Brown ranks fourth (14.8 ppg), Marcus Smart ranks eighth (14.0 ppg) and Le Bryan Nash is 11th (13.6 ppg) in the Big 12 scoring ranks. Those three also rank among the top 11 in the league in free-throw percentage. Brown is tied for seventh, Nash ranks 10th and Marcus Smart is 11th. Oklahoma State has had a plus turnover margin greater than 3.0 just three times in school history, including the school record +3.5 turnover margin created during the season. Turnover Margin Mar OSU Opp Season The Stat Sheet Stuffer Marcus Smart fills the stat sheet better than anyone else in the league. He is the only player in the Big 12 Conference who ranks among league s leaders statistically in all five major categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots). Kansas Ben McLemore ranks among the best in four categories, and eight others rank in three categories. Smart leads the league in steals, is fifth in assists, is eighth in scoring, is tied for 11th in blocked shots and ranks 19th in rebounding. He is also fifth in minutes played, ninth in assist-to-turnover ratio, 11th in free-throw percentage and 13th in defensive rebounds. That s nine different statistical categories in which he ranks among the Big 12 s top 20. Stop, Thief! Marcus Smart has 42 steals through 15 games this season, an average of 2.8 thefts per game and leading the Big 12 Conference. That average ranks as the second-highest in school history, behind only Brooks Thompson s 2.9 steal-per-game average as a senior in Smart s total is the third-most among all-time freshmen in school history. He s on pace to challenge the Big 12 freshman record of 89, set by Kansas Mario Chalmers in in 33 games. He is not a natural point guard, but don t be surprised if he runs the show for the Cowboys. The kid is a born leader. Matt Norlander had this to say about Nash, the No. 24 player on CBSSports.com s list, Undeniably talented, but if he had a more consistent shot and really mean streak, he d be a borderline top-10 player on this list. If he puts up more than 15 points per game this year he s gotta be gone. Smart on Tisdale Watch List Marcus Smart is one of 10 individuals named to the watch list for the Integris Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award, it was announced by the United States Basketball Writers Association. 8 Game Notes vs Texas Tech page 8 Head Coach Travis Ford Travis Ford is entering his fifth season as the head man for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. He is just the second coach in school history to lead his team to the NCAA Tournament in his first two seasons in charge of the Cowboys, and his 23 victories in his initial campaign are the second-most wins by a head coach in his inaugural season at Oklahoma State. In four seasons at the helm of the Cowboys, he has already led OSU to nine victories over top-25 opponents, including four wins over top-10 foes. Ford is in his 16th season as a head coach at either the Division I or II level and has mastered the art of generating successful programs. He began his career at Campbellsville and after a mark in his initial season, he resurrected the team to a 28-3 record the following season. It took a few more years after he took over at Eastern Kentucky, but by his fifth season, the Colonels won 22 games and made an NCAA Tournament appearance. Then at UMass, he went his initial season before back-to-back 20-win seasons his final two years. Ford has compiled a overall record as a head coach, including a mark at the Division I level. 9 Cowboys Ink Five to NLIs Oklahoma State has signed five players to National Letters of Intent in the sport of men s basketball, including four high school seniors and a juniorcollege sophomore, for the season. The Cowboys class is ranked 22nd nationally according to ESPN.com. Jeffrey Carroll, a 6-5 wing from Rowlett High School in Texas, is ranked as the No. 21 player in the state of Texas according to Texashoops.com. He averaged 17.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game as a junior, leading his team to a 22-9 overall record, including an 11-3 mark in District 10-5A. Carroll is a three-star recruit according to Rivals.com. He chose Oklahoma State over Kansas State, Oklahoma, Nebraska and TCU. Jeff Carroll is a player I just fell in love with this summer, said Ford. I didn t know a whole lot about him until I saw him on the AAU circuit. He s an extremely physical, big guard who can shoot it with great range, can score off the dribble, and is just an extremely athletic wing. He was probably one of the biggest surprises on the circuit this summer. He was one of the most consistent players I saw, and really fits our style of play. He can run, jump, press, shoot the basketball, and I really like the way he can score. He s got a great body for this level, and can play a lot of different positions. Stephen Clark, a 5-11 point guard at Douglass High School in Oklahoma City, was named the 2012 Super Five Player of the Year by The Oklahoman as a junior. He averaged 25 points and 11 assists per game in leading the Trojans to a 24-3 record and a third-straight Class 4A state championship. He was also named the Class 4A state tournament Most Valuable player after scoring 40 points in a semifinal win over Cascia Hall and a 40-point outburst against Anadarko in the title game. Rted a four-star recruit by multiple recruiting services, he is ranked as the No. 62 player in the country according to ESPN.com, and is a consensus top-100 player nationally. He chose Oklahoma State over a host of offers, including Baylor, Florida State, Missouri, UCLA, Marquette and Oklahoma. Stevie is not only one of the best high school players to ever play in the state of Oklahoma, but he is also an excellent student, Ford said. He s one of the top guards in the country. He gets a lot of publicity for how he can score the basketball, but he is also a great passer and a great ball handler. He s a winner. His team has won three state championships, and are looking forward to trying to win a fourth. Stevie loves the game of basketball, and it shows in how he plays. He s going to fit perfectly into our system and how we play. I look forward to coaching Stevie every day, and feel like we ve got one of the top players in the country joining our basketball family. Gary Gaskins is a 6-10 forward/center originally from Beaufort, S.C., but is currently a sophomore at Brevard Community College in Melbourne, Fla. After averaging 12.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 4.3 blocks as a senior at Beaufort High School, he joined the Air Force. He enrolled at Brevard Oklahoma State 2013 Signing Class Player Pos Ht Wt Hometown (High School/Last School) Jeffrey Carroll G/F Rowlett, Texas (Rowlett HS) Stephen Clark G Oklahoma City, Okla. (La Lumiere School [Ind.]) Game Notes vs Texas Tech page 9 as a freshman in 2011, and this season, Gaskins is averaging 13.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in six games while shooting 69.2 percent from the floor. He chose OSU over UAB, Marshall and Nebraska after receiving recruiting interest from Oklahoma, South Florida, Wichita State and Arkansas. Gary Gaskins is a player that we saw play this summer and loved his athleticism and his presence around the rim, said Ford. He s a guy that might be the fastest guy on our court, but can also put his elbows above the rim. He s a really athletic shot blocker that can score around the rim. His best days are ahead of him. He took a little break (after high school) and went into the military. Talking to his coaches, I think that by the time he s done here, he could really have a good career. He s really excited about coming to Oklahoma State. He brings a big, physical rebounding and shot-blocking presence that we desperately need. Leyton Hammonds is a 6-8 forward from Richland High School in North Richland Hills, Texas. He is a three-star recruit according to Rivals. com, and is ranked as the No. 16 player in the state of Texas according to Texashoops.com. As a junior, Hammonds averaged 14.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game in leading his team to a 27-4 record overall and a 15-1 mark in District 6-5A. He chose OSU over interest from Clemson, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Stanford and TCU. Leyton is playing really great basketball right now, Ford said. he s playing like a top-50 player in the country. He s really worked on his body and gotten stronger. For a guy his size, he s really skilled. He can play inside and outside. He has a great understanding of the game. He can shoot the ball from the perimeter, he can pull up, and he can post. He s a guy who can play anything from a three to a four to a five for us; very skilled for his size. The final signee is Detrick Mostella (DEE-trick moss-tell-uh) a 6-3 combo guard originally from Decatur, Ala., is currently enrolled at La Lumiere School in LaPorte, Ind. A four-star recruit according to Rivals. com, he is ranked as the 68th-best player in the nation and the No. 22 shooting guard. As a junior at Austin High School in Decatur, he averaged 16.4 points per game and led his team to the Class 6A Northwest Regional finals. As a sophomore in , he was named The Decatur Daily s 4A-6A Player of the Year after averaging 18 points and four rebounds per contest. Mostella received scholarship offers from a host of schools, including Georgetown, Georgia, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Penn State and West Virginia. Detrick might be the best scoring guard in the country, Ford said. He s a big-time scorer. He s extremely athletic and has a knack for how to score, from the three-point line, pull-up jumpers, and understands angles. He might lead the country in scoring when it s all said and done this year in the prep school ranks, and that s with five or six Division I players on his team. He can play either guard position. He s probably better suited for the two-guard, but can handle the ball well enough that he can play the point-guard position on his team. He s another guy who really fits our system and who can really score.

Notes Marcus Smart dished out a career-high nine assists, including seven in the first half. The nine dimes ranks as the third-most ever by a Cowboy freshman. Oklahoma State held Portland State to 22 first-half points, the Vikings lowest total this season. Markel Brown finished with a career-high nine field goals against Portland State, and recorded season-highs in points (23) and assists (five). Philip Jurick tied a season high with eight rebounds. Cowboys Fall to Hokies, OSU loses in first true road test of the season Blacksburg, Va. (AP) Erick Green scored 28 points and hit eight critical free throws in the final 76 seconds Saturday to help Virginia Tech remain unbeaten and handed No. 15 Oklahoma State its first loss, Le Bryan Nash and Marcus Smart scored 18 each to lead the Cowboys, who lost to the Hokies for the fourth straight time, all in past three seasons. The game was close throughout, especially after Tech saw what had been an eight-point led cut to on Markel Brown s deep 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2:22 remaining. Green played only nine minutes in the first half after drawing two quick fouls, but scored the Hokies first 10 points of the second half on a pair of 3-pointers, two free throws and a long fadeaway. Jarell Eddie s 3-pointer gave Virginia Tech a lead with 15 minutes left. Forte scored for Oklahoma State, and Robert Brown put back his own miss. Smart s drive cut the Hokies lead to with 13:17 to go, but the Cowboys didn t score again for 5:05 as the Hokies reeled off seven straight. The Cowboys used a 9-2 run featuring five points by Smart to close to 60-59, but after the Hokies Robert Brown and the Cowboys Kamari Murphy traded baskets, Virginia Tech scored seven of the next nine. Eddie scored on a drive, and Brown was credited with a basket when Philip Jurick was called for goaltending. After Nash s driving bank, Marshall Wood was fouled twice and made 3 of 4 free throws. Markel Brown s 3-pointer from the top of the key for the Cowboys made it with 2:22 left. The Cowboys led at halftime in a half in which both teams took turns going on short scoring bursts. The biggest of those was an early 10-0 run by Oklahoma State that gave it a 12-7 lead. The score remained close until 3-pointers by Smart and Phil Forte around an inside basket by Michael Cobbins gave the Cowboys a lead. It was Cobbins first action of the season after suffering a toe injury in the exhibition contest. Virginia scored six of the last eight points in the half to get within four at the break. 33 Game Notes vs Texas Tech page 33 Cowboys Lasso Bulls, OSU wins first game as a ranked team since 2007 Stillwater, Okla. (AP) Marcus Smart scored 15 points, Markel Brown added 13 and No. 23 Oklahoma State bounced back from its first loss of the season to beat South Florida on Wednesday night. Smart, the Cowboys playmaking freshman, nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing to launch a 16-5 run that put Oklahoma State in control in the second half. He finished it off by hitting another 3, then making a quick steal in the backcourt before setting up Brown s layup for a lead with 7:29 remaining. The Bulls couldn t get closer than nine points after that. Victor Rudd had 14 points for South Florida, and Anthony Collins scored 12. The Bulls were held to a season-worst 34 percent shooting and had their lowest scoring game of the season. Philip Jurick grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds as Oklahoma State held a edge on the boards, turning it into a 19-7 advantage in second-chance points. Le Bryan Nash, the Cowboys leading scorer with a 19-point average, ran into some minor foul trouble and had only six points - four coming on free throws in the final 2 minutes. Nash, who had scored in double digits in 15 consecutive games dating to last season, attempted just four shots. The missing offense didn t matter nearly as much with Oklahoma State s defense returning to form after Virginia Tech shot 50 percent in the second half while beating the Cowboys on Saturday. That amounted to 16 more points than any other opponent had scored against OSU this season. The Cowboys clamped down, limiting South Florida to two baskets over the final 12 minutes of the first half but still led only when Shaun Noriega made a 3-pointer to start the second half for the Bulls. (AP) Markel Brown scored 15 points, Michael Cobbins and Le Bryan Nash added 10 apiece and No. 23 Oklahoma State beat Missouri State The Cowboys scored 14 of the game s first 16 points. After a dreadful first half, Missouri State came out of the break hot and used a 10-0 run to claw back within after Nathan Scheer s 3-pointer from the wing. The Bears hit their first four shots and eight of their first 11 in the second half, but couldn t keep up the sharp shooting. A turnover and three straight misses gave an opening for an 11-0 burst, and Cobbins jumper with 8:09 left pushed the lead back to and put it away. The Bears came into the game shooting just 34 percent against Division I competition, losing all six of those games. In their previous two games, they were a combined 3 for 45 on 3-pointers. They didn t fare any better against a Cowboys defense limiting opponents to just 36 percent shooting. Missouri State shot 33 percent from the field and made only three of its 18 tries from 3-point range. Oklahoma State was just as cold from behind the arc, going 4 for 23, but dominated the glass The Cowboys were in control from the outset, scoring 13 straight points to go up 14-2 on Phil Forte s3-pointer from the right wing with 14:14 left before halftime. 35 Game Notes vs Texas Tech page 35 Cowboys Shut Down Eagles, Forte s career-high 22 off the bench paces OSU to victory Stillwater, Okla. (AP) Phil Forte s big day from behind the arc carried Oklahoma State. The defense did more than its part, too, forcing 20 turnovers in the 24th-ranked Cowboys victory over Tennessee Tech. Forte hit 6 of 11 from 3-point range and the Cowboys hit a season-high 11 3-point field goals. Kamari Murphy scored 12 points, Markel Brown and Marcus Smart each scored 11, and Kirby Gardner added 10 points and seven assists. Judd Dillard led Tennessee Tech with 18 points. Jeremiah Samarrippas added 11 points and Dennis Ogbe grabbed eight rebounds. Oklahoma State led at halftime, the second straight game an opponent failed to reach 20 points in the opening 20 minutes. In a 25-point victory over UT Arlington last Wednesday, the Cowboys allowed 17 first-half points. Tennessee Tech hit 4 of 15 from 3-point range and is 8 of 51 from 3-point range over the last three games. The Golden Eagles converted 8 of 18 foul shots and committed 20 turnovers. A pair of mid-range jumpers put the Cowboys up 23 in the opening minute of the second half and a spectacular dunk by Brown off an alley-oop pass from Smart gave the hosts a 25-point margin four minutes later. Forte s 3 from the corner put the hosts up with 6:51 to play. Dillard, the only Golden Eagles player averaging double figures entering Saturday, hit a shot-clock-beating 3-pointer to draw the visitors within with 52 seconds left in the half. But a 3 by Smart and a free throw by Murphy following an intentional foul gave Oklahoma State a 19-point halftime advantage. Dillard had 13 points in the first half. (AP) - Gary Bell hit a 3-pointer from the left wing with 35.7 seconds left to put the 10th-ranked Bulldogs ahead and Kevin Pangos made two clinching free throws down the stretch as 10th-ranked Gonzaga defeated No. 22 Oklahoma State Marcus Smart led the Cowboys with 23 points but missed two free throws with 8.7 seconds left with the Cowboys trailing by two. Elias Harris grabbed the rebound on Smart s second miss, and Pangos was fouled in the backcourt before stepping to the line to drill both free throws. Phil Forte then connected on a 3-pointer at the buzzer for Oklahoma State. Markel Brown contributed 16 points and Forte scored 15 for the Cowboys. Pangos finished with 23 points and Kelly Olynyk scored all 21 of his points in the second half for the Bulldogs, who completed a perfect five-game sweep of Big 12 competition. It stacked up as one of the most anticipated home, non-conference games in Oklahoma State s history. Only four other top 10 teams had played at Gallagher-Iba Arena outside of conference play, and Gonzaga was the first ranked team outside of the Big Eight or Big 12 to visit Stillwater since Memphis in Louisville was the last top 10 team to play in the building outside of conference play, in Olynyk, the Bulldogs second-leading scorer, fought foul trouble in the first half but was able to play through it in the second half. The 7-footer had a pair of buckets off of offensive rebounds to put the Zags back on top, before Smart answered with a putback of his own for a OSU advantage. Olynyk fouled out while keeping Smart from getting an easy layup for the tie - and it proved to be well worth it as the Bulldogs moved to 5-0 against Oklahoma State in the past eight seasons. Even after missing the first free throw, Smart said he was trying to make the second to keep it a one-possession game after a foul. 36 Game Notes vs Texas Tech page 36 Cowboys Fall in League Opener at K-State 25th-ranked Wildcats hold off OSU surge for win Manhattan, Kan. (AP) Rodney McGruder scored all but two of his 28 points in the second half, and No. 25 Kansas State turned away a game effort from Marcus Smart and No. 22 Oklahoma State for a victory. It wasn t because the Wildcats managed to shut down Smart, Oklahoma State s star freshman. The athletic guard scored on an assortment of driving layups, pull-up jumpers and free throws for a season-best 25 points. Markel Brown added 19 points for the Cowboys, but he and Smart didn t get much help. The rest of the team managed just 23 points as OSU was dominated on the boards. It was a typical rough-and-tumble Big 12 game from the opening tipoff. How much so? The Cowboys got called for a foul after two seconds. There was plenty of pushing and shoving, and more than once it looked as if punches were going to be thrown between teams hoping to contend with No. 6 Kansas for conference supremacy. Smart s ability to get into the lane and Brown s scoring prowess allowed Oklahoma State to squeeze out to an early lead. Kansas State answered with a 12-2 run, forcing Cowboys coach Travis Ford to call a timeout with just under 8 minutes left in the first half. That coincided with a third foul on forward Philip Jurick, taking away one of Oklahoma State s only post presences. Nevertheless, the Cowboys answered with eight straight points, and the teams traded punches - figuratively, at least - the rest of the half. Oklahoma State wound up leading behind 23 points from Brown and Smart, its only reliable offensive production. McGruder took over to start the second half by scoring the Wildcats first nine points and helping them slowly pull out to a lead. But then the game truly got into a back-and-forth affair, with two of the league s best defensive teams playing very little defense for a 10-minute span. Williams and Smart managed to get into a game of personal one-on-one, too. Both of them had a stretch of nine consecutive points for their teams, playing each other to a standstill.
