The Rebels won their first two games of the season for just sixth time and scored the most goals ever (nine) in the opening weekend in program history. Redshirt freshman Michalea Morris much-anticipated collegiate debut did not disappoint as the forward netted four goals in the wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Morris didn t do it all by herself, however, as redshirt senior Susie Bernal started her final season on a high note, assisting on both of Morris goals in the win. Fellow senior Lily Sender added an insurance goal in the 84th minute. The scoring explosion continued on Sunday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as it was Morris again finding the net in the eighth minute for what proved to be the winning goal in the 6-0 victory over the Islanders. Morris tallied her second goal of the day and fourth of the weekend in the 58th minute. Bernal had another stellar game, scoring a goal of her own and hooking up with Morris again twice -- a combination the Rebels hope to keep seeing throughout the season. After collecting a goal on Friday, Sender registered three assists to tie Bernal s single-game record that was set back in Senior Brittany Gideon also turned in a great performance on the weekend, with an assist in Friday s game and two goals in Sunday s win, while true freshman Katie Ballou scored her first-career goal as a Rebel in the 76th minute Sunday. The defense was stout in both games, giving up just one goal on 15 shots over the weekend, including just two on Sunday against the Islanders. Junior keeper Jordan Sallee registered seven saves, while Sallee and fellow junior keeper Jessie Clark combined for the first shutout of the season Sunday. With the two wins, UNLV took first in the invitational and placed a tournament-high five players on the All-Tournament team. The team included defender Chidera Akubuilo, along with Ballou, Sender, Morris and Bernal. UNLV Invitational Features Four Games at Peter Johann Memorial Field As part of the annual UNLV Invitational, there will be a total of four games at Peter Johann Memorial Field on UNLV s campus on Friday and Sunday. The 4 p.m. game on Friday will feature UC Davis vs. Eastern Washington, followed by UNLV vs. Northern Arizona at 7 p.m. Sunday s early matchup has UC Davis and NAU facing off at 10:30 a.m., while UNLV and Eastern Washington will play at 1 p.m. Visit unlvtickets.com to purchase tickets. UNLV Sweeps Mountain West Player of the Week Awards The first Mountain West Player of the Week Awards were announced on Monday, August 22, and it was no surprise that a pair of Rebels earned the honors. After her four-goal performance in her first two collegiate games, Morris was named Offensive Player of the Week, while junior Chidera Akubuilo garnered Defensive Player of the Week after anchoring a back line that helped allow just one goal and 15 shots total in two games over the weekend. It was the first player of the week awards for each, and the first time a Rebel has earned Defensive Player of the Week honors since keeper Kylie Wassell and defender Caitlin Allen earned them in back-to-back weeks in October of Current senior Jordan Magnin won the last Offensive Player of the Week award for the Rebels after the last weekend of the regular season in It was also the first time since September of 2010 that UNLV has swept the awards. Scouting Northern Arizona The Lumberjacks came out of opening weekend with a 1-1 record after at 4-1 loss against Utah Valley on Friday and a 1-0 win over New Mexico State on Sunday. NAU graduated its leading scorer from 2015, but returns two of its top three scorers from 2015 in junior Adrian Nixt and senior Lindsay Doyle, who scored four goals apiece and combined for five assists a year ago. The Lumberjacks are trying to improve on an overall record of and a seventh-place finish in the Big Sky last year.

The Eagles also started the first weekend of the 2016 campaign 2-0, with a 1-0 overtime win over Grand Canyon and a 3-2 win over Utah State. Eastern Washington is an experienced group, returning 11 starters from a team that went overall and finished third in the Big Sky in The team set program records for wins (12), conference wins (6) and longest winning streak (8) during the year. In addition to returning the reigning Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Chloe Williams, the Eagles return four All-Big Sky second-team selections. Williams was the hero in Friday s overtime victory over Grand Canyon and needs just 8 points to become the school s all-time leader in points. All-Time Series UNLV and Northern Arizona will meet for the 10th time overall, with the last meeting on August 30th, 2015 ending in a 1-0 overtime win for the Rebels. Overall UNLV owns a record against the Lumberjacks and has won three out of the last five meetings. This is the first-ever meeting between Eastern Washington and UNLV. Next Time Out The Rebels will head back out on the road for two-consecutive weekends after the UNLV Invitational. They will be in Utah for the first weekend, taking on Utah Valley on Friday, Sept. 2 and 6:30 p.m. PT in Orem, Utah, followed by a Sunday, Sept. 4 match against Southern Utah at 2 p.m. PT. Rebels Picked Eighth In Preseason Poll UNLV was picked to finish eighth in the 2016 Mountain West Conference women s soccer preseason poll released on Aug. 10.
