LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND BOARD CHAIRMAN It has now been 9 years since the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation was formed and today we are exceptionally proud of the things we ve accomplished. Perhaps our greatest achievement is the fact that the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation has gifted over $12.5 MILLION dollars to help many worthwhile endeavors in our community. The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation is now firmly established as a difference maker in Oil Country, and the most unique part of our efforts is that we receive a significant amount of help from the Oilers players, management, coaches, and staff. But the real strength behind our success is the generosity of the Fans in Oil Country. While we all recognize the importance of providing support to fundraising efforts, the real giving is done by you. So we say thank you. Thank you for recognizing that we are reinvesting in our community. Thank you for helping us gain momentum and achieve the kind of successes we have enjoyed. Thank you for being so generous in order that together we do the right things to help year after year. Our work is just beginning. We look forward to your continued support. Bruce A. Saville Natalie Minckler 5

INNER CITY HIGH SCHOOL THE EOCF LEGACY PROJECT For youth who come from broken homes and lives rooted in the street, finding something that s constant and stable can be difficult but vitally important. In downtown Edmonton, the steadying force is a humble building called Inner City High School. Housed in the Boyle Street Community League, the school has become both a safe haven and a way out for many at-risk youth. Accredited by Alberta Learning, Inner City High School offers youth an academic and arts-based focus and an alternative route to achieving a high school diploma. But just as important, the school offers youth help with everything from finding appropriate accommodation to counseling, to food and medical care. Dr. Joe Cloutier Inner City High School s Director says the school s mandate has to be large in order to succeed. Without taking care of their lives, as a whole, we have no hope of giving them an education, he says. We are building bonds of trust by saying You don t have to worry about this anymore. In some cases, the work will be nothing short of life-saving. Currently, Inner City High School s space is startlingly 7 limited. A few rooms in the current facility must each serve many different functions, putting a strain on and limiting this unique and necessary learning environment. In addition, accommodation for the school s students a primary ingredient for success - does not exist, keeping these high-risk youth from fully focusing on completing school. With no fixed address, the goal of a high school diploma is more than just an academic challenge. But all that will soon change with the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation s (EOCF) commitment to redeveloping Inner City High School. With the assistance of Edmonton-based architects, DIALOG, and principal architect Donna Clare, the EOCF is working to create a new school that will bring the hopes and dreams of its students to life; in short, providing a place for students of divergent cultures and socio-economic backgrounds to experience the empowerment that comes with a high school education. The new facility has the potential to support Edmonton s inner city youth on many levels. It will provide a safe and inspiring place with a strong sense of community, one that goes beyond basic education to address the many complex needs of youth at risk. Oilers players have developed an affinity with the school and its story. The players have really embraced Inner City High School, though some of the students initially had a hard time understanding why these players cared about them, explains Bruce A. Saville, Board Chair of the EOCF. But they do it because they believe in it. As a testament to the connection Oil Country has to its team, attendance at the school has gone up and remained steady since the EOCF and Oilers became involved. The EOCF obviously helps out enormously with funding, says Dr. Cloutier. But I think the involvement the Oilers players have shown, demonstrates a lot about their character and compassion to ensuring everyone succeeds. FACT NET PROCEEDS FROM THE EOCF S WINNER S CHOICE LOTTERY ARE ALLOCATED TO THE REDEVELOPMENT OF INNER CITY HIGH SCHOOL.

SUPPORTING YOUTH HORCOFF S HEROES Edmonton Oilers Captain Shawn Horcoff and his wife, Cindy continue with their generosity. Every year, the Horcoffs purchase a block of tickets to 20 Oilers games throughout the season and graciously donate the tickets to children s charities. Before these games, children and their chaperones are given the opportunity to meet Shawn for autographs and pictures. Each child also receives a Horcoff s Heroes t-shirt and a voucher for a pop and hot dog at the game. SEATS FOR KIDS Thanks to the generosity of Edmonton Oilers, Edmonton Oil Kings and Edmonton Capitals ticket holders across Oil Country, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation was able to provide game tickets to over 50 registered children s charities. These tickets give children facing extraordinary challenges, the chance to experience live professional sporting events at Rexall Place and Telus Field. Donors receive a tax receipt for the face value of the game tickets donated. 9 FACT IN OVER 4,500 KIDS ATTENDED HOCKEY AND BASEBALL GAMES COURTESY OF THE SEATS FOR KIDS PROGRAM.

SUPPORTING EDUCATION SHARE A BOOK Books stir the senses, inspire the imagination, and spark a love of reading that can last a lifetime; they are essential to lifelong development, and yet many children from low-income families have no books or very few books at home to call their own. The EOCF s Share A Book program is a literacy program which gives children from low-income families the opportunity to experience the magic and joy of reading at home by providing students new books and a book bag. During , the EOCF joined with the Edmonton Journal Raise a Reader program to bring Share A Book to over 2,200 grade one students. For many students, these were the first books they had ever owned. The Share A Book program ensures that the joy of reading is not limited to a student s financial means. The EOCF was also an active participant in the annual Raise a Reader Day, with several prominent members of the Hockey Club and Foundation lending a hand to sell Edmonton Journal newspapers to raise funds for the program. 11 ICE SCHOOL Up on level four of Rexall Place is the ICE (In Class Education) School classroom. From there, teachers and students venture out to explore the fascinating working world of that building, the Oilers family of teams and the rest of Northlands. The program is one of Edmonton s site-based educational opportunities called Inquiring Minds. During , 590 kids from 27 classes with 31 teachers attended ICE School and had the chance to connect learning with real life, including an opportunity to skate at Rexall Place! One of the firsts for ICE School was the participation of a class from the Alberta School for the Deaf who traveled each day with their teacher and aide on the LRT and were facilitated on their learning journey by two sign interpreters. Another first was the opportunity for five grade two classes who came to Rexall for two days in September and then spent three days in May or June at Telus Field, learning about baseball and the historic river valley. SCHOLARSHIPS One of the EOCF s pillars of support is expanding educational opportunities for people in and around Oil Country. Since 2001, the EOCF has provided over $240,000 in post secondary scholarships. Annually scholarships are provided at the following post-secondary institutions: NorQuest College University of Alberta Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Grant MacEwan University FACT SINCE ICE SCHOOL S INCEPTION STARTED IN 2002, OVER 4,100 STUDENTS HAVE ATTENDED THE PROGRAM.

IN THE COMMUNITY Each and every season, the Edmonton Oilers make a commitment to being strong community partners. Through this commitment, the organization, players, and staff participate in a number of different fundraisers, community programs and initiatives. Fans pack Rexall Place to find out which Oilers player has the hardest shot, who is the fastest skater and a whole lot more. Funds raised through this event continue to support various Foundation programs. MOVEMBER The Oilers organization joined forces with the Movember movement raising over $25,000 for Prostate Cancer Canada.
