DECEMBER NEWSLETTER ATRA DECEMBER ISSUE 2014/2015 Volume 2: Issue 6 DIRECTORS REPORT Welcome to December ATRA Ropers! My hasn t 2014 flown! Our 2013/2014 Season was another beaming success with a total of 172 events, a boost from 123 in the 2012/2013 Season. To ensure the ongoing success and viability of the association we need to ensure that we maintain this gentle growth so it is the ropers obligation to work with their local promoters and request events, but also be there to help promoters keep it viable for them. The Board of Directors advocates more open communication between promoters and competitors to manage the needs and wants of both parties especially in these tough times when many areas are drought stricken and people are struggling to keep their horses and cattle fed and sound. So during our busy lives of work and struggle, we must still make time for play! Always turn to roping for solace! Edited by Erin Jusseaume

The Association has recently had to pay the annual insurance premium, which has increased due to the growth in annual events and our membership base. Our exposure for likely incidents increases and the necessary evil of insurance cost goes up! As such, the ATRA request that every competitor meets their obligations as a member to ride and compete in a safe manner and according to the rulebook. A polite reminder to all junior competitors under 18 that it is a MUST that you ride with a helmet securely fastened, regardless of personal preference or what you do at home. It is the promoters responsibility to ensure that all competitors abide by the rules especially when the event is covered by the ATRA Insurance Policy. In saying that, it is hard to have eyes and mind on everything all the time so everyone can look out for one another if you are seen without a helmet and are asked to put one on, then please politely oblige the person making the request regardless of who they may be they are just looking out for your best interests. Also a reminder to senior members, please abide by our dress code especially in this hot weather I will do my best to keep my blasted hat on my head!. All our thoughts are certainly with young rodeo competitor Jordan Lane Robb who suffered life-altering injuries recently. Many businesses around the nation are getting behind the fundraising effort for the young cowboy who now faces a new way of life. If you can help out in anyway I m sure Jordan and his family will be very appreciative charity never faileth Well Movember will have come to a whiskery end as we stare down the barrel of Christmas. I hope that we all supported a Mo Bro or Mo Sista in their fundraising efforts for a very good cause. Every cowboy should take care of his health if you need someone to talk to, look to your friends and family, they want to be there for you. Some problems can be solved whilst scoring your next steer or making your way back from the catchpen with your partner. You can also seek assistance at Beyond Blue or call

The 2014/2015 Season brings about All Girls Team Roping being an official National Finals qualifier event, so when you re competing at your local jackpots, you are vying for finals spots so Rope Like A Girl! This has been a growing event around the country and has certainly been well represented as a feature event at the National Finals for the last two years. I will be liaising with Nicky Cavanagh, an Australian WPRA representative to investigate further opportunities here in Australia for ATRA female competitors. Lastly, the new Board of Directors welcome any constructive member feedback so that we can help make a difference for the Regional and National benefit. Feel free to give us a call or send an to admin@teamroper.com.au and the query will be directed to us. Thanks, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! Safe travels this festive season and happy roping! Lacey-Jae O Halloran Treasurer We really hope that as many people as possible have placed there entries for The Big Show Team Roping Championships to best assist premier roping event pioneers Wayne & Melissa McGhee in preparing for the event! Australian ropers will have the chance to witness PRCA World Champions Trevor Brazile and Patrick Smith compete in the flesh and also have an opportunity to learn from them when they run clinics here as well. Contact Shane Kenny for further details!

NFR Seems to be the year that Las Vegas will see an influx of Aussies geared up for all that s offered during the National Finals Rodeo. So along with wishing all our members safe travels to Las Vegas Nevada, we thought we would give you some tips on how to get around to your favorite shopping experiences. For starters everyone should make sure they give themselves a full day at any one of the Cowboy Christmas events. They are set up all over the Las Vegas city limits. The largest being the Las Vegas Convention Centre. Next you ll want to head to the Venetian site, from there you can take a ride on the rail back up to Mandalay Bay. Then don t forget the huge NRS site at the MGM Grand. There is also a new site this year that is set up at the Hard Rock Casino. But if you are wanting to shop and cheer on our Aussie ropers at the World Series Finale then don t forget South Point Casino. This works out to be about a $35USD cab fair (including a little tip) to South Point from the strip each way. Americans love Aussies so don t be shy to share a cab and split the fees and make a new friend. Enjoy all of what Las Vegas has to offer and stay warm

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ONGOING SPONSORHIP

Kelsey Lenton is one of the ATRA s up and coming junior competitors. Kelsey who hales from Woodstock 40km west of Townsville, is super excited to attend any ATRA event. Kelsey with Holly and Blackie sporting an Ace in the Hole Designed shirt. Kelsey had a great 2014 season competing in the junior barrel races around North Queensland. She even qualified for the ATRA finals, for the second year in a row. Unfortunately she missed out on the finals this year as her horse Blackie sustained a leg injury that wasn t going to heal in time for the event. Injury hasn t stopped this cowgirl from chasing down the clover leaf pattern. She recently just competed at the NBHA finals and now has accumulated 4 buckles this season and a new sponsor Tuff Magic Promotions. This barrel racer is also trying her hand at breakaway roping as well. She practices under the watchful eye of long time roper Juanita Movigliatti. Kelsey is even training her own horse with Junaitas help. She had her maiden breakaway debut at the final Lazy G ATRA event of the year and walked out of the arena with a top notch. Kelsey is one talented young cowgirl with a great attitude both in and out of the arena. Congrats on a great season

ANOTHER FLINDERS ROPING Kevin Redsstrom has travelled across Australia this year holding clinics and helping our members improve their game in the arena. Hughenden was no exception. Though this time Kevin held two schools in the area and helped game more interest in the sport of Team Roping with beginners who were well and truly green. Tenielle Middleton says some of the people who attended the clinic where real beginners, some had never swung a rope and others that had never really ridden a horse This was the beginning of a now huge ATRA following in Hughenden Western Queensland. Their event this past month was the definitely a warm Queensland day. This didn t stop the trailers and car loads of people travelling to the Middleton arena. Competitors travelled from Cloncurry,Townsville, Emerald and Charters Towers to name a few towns to join in on the fun. #7s winners were Dylan Isaac and Clancy Middleton. This being Dylans first ever live steer catch, followed closely by Liam Wellby and Clancy Middleton. -3D barrels had some very good competitors. With $200 posted prize money, winner of the 1D was Shauna Glennan on Jet followed by Kristine Stagg who was the last jackpot winner. 3D was won by Shauna Glennon again on her young horse Jet followed by Deb Johinke -Under 17 Barrels was won by KellliJo Litchfield -Under 12s had an enormous amount of entries won by Brandi Ferguson followed by locals Kristy Williams and Hayley Wellby -Under 7s was Heidi Middleton -Jnr Breakway only had one catch won by Dylan Issaac - #9's had a total of 25 very tough teams and was one by Steve Vohland and Clancy Middleton followed by Ian Remfrey and Clancy Middleton, 3rd was Liam Davison Lamar Cox -Ladies breakaway was a 5 head with a good line up of girls. Tenielle Middleton only narrowly won it from Rae-Etta Harrison followed by relatively new roper Tylen Gibb - NRG #11's had a total of 28 teams and had $500 posted prizemoney. Winners were Tony Lillyman and Clancy Midldeton followed by Ian Remfrey and Kendall Douglass from Cloncurry -2D was Ride'm Hard Westerns cowgirl Halana Haber on a borrowed mount of Hornet followed by local cowgirl Sara Middleton. -

THE BIG SHOW TEAM ROPING ROPING FORMAT Entry 5 times per Roping 1 entry per rotation If a person enters 5 times in a single Roping then they are permitted to a free entry into the 6th rotation. This run must be with a person who is already entered in the Roping. If they have not entered 5 times, they must pay full entry. Each Roping will have five 50 team rotations, the sixth rotation is only made up of teams that have one or both team members that have entered 5 times Or a roper who's number has changed from time of entry to start of competition. This means that the team that was already entered does not fit. For example, in the number #7 s a number 3 Roper and a number 4 where entered, and the number 3 was moved to a number 4, the team will split and the roper that s number has not changed will keep the spot in the Roping and find another partner. The roper s who s number who has changed, will find a new partner and rope in the 6th rotation or you as a team can move to the sixth rotation of the next level of Roping or one or both can ask for a refund of their entry fee s. The top 5 teams in each rotation will go to the final to rope another Steer, progressing with the top 10 after three head moving on to the short round. Each rotation will have 2 full rounds. If you enter and cannot compete. It is your responsibility to find a replacement and sell your spot. These Ropings are not progressive. Your number will not change upon the commencement of the competition date.

CLASSIFACTION INFORMATION In the spirit of making team roping in Australia the best it can be, we at the ATRA want to answer some questions about the upcoming classification number changes. Classification experts from ECTRA, ATRA, World Series and USTRC have worked together to make some positive changes to our classification numbers list. The time is right for Australia to fall in line with international team roping standards. This upgraded numbering system is used successfully in the U.S., Canada and Brazil. The classification handicaps are developed using expert observations of ropers, as well as, computer data that analzses ropers performance; speed indexes, win to entry ratios, impact in short rounds, catch percentages, and so on. It s important to know that your classification may change as your roping performance changes. Also, numbers do not change as knee-jerk reactions to a particular roping, but rather to the trend in a roper s performance. For example, a roper is not going to have their number raised simply because they won big at one event. Roping data will be entered into the computer system and experts will observing ropings continuously to make necessary adjustments over time. It is essential for us to keep Australian team roping fair and competitive for all. As of 1st June, all ropings we run will use this list. Please make sure you read the classification guidelines for. Then review the list and make us aware of any grievances or possible mistakes. A simple or call to Tony Lillyman will be appreciated. tony@teamroper.com.au (Some Break Away and/or Junior contestants may not yet have numbers as of yet. Those numbers will be updated in the near future.) Australian Team Roping is growing rapidly. A classification system that keeps it fun and fair drives the growth. This means more competition, bigger payouts and more fun! Thanks Ropers. See You Soon!!!
