1 May-June-July 2017 Payne County 4-H News 315 W. 6th Avenue, Suite 103 Stillwater, OK Phone: From April 9th-12th I attended my second national 4-H trip to National 4-H Conference in Washington, DC. Surrounded by the beauty of our Nation s Capitol, I rallied with over 200 of the world s most driven youth leaders, all who strive toward the common goal of making the best better. Unlike Citizenship Washington-Focus, which I attended last summer, National 4-H Conference is a working trip - meaning that while in DC, delegates are working together to represent 4-Hers all over the world and make their voices heard. This is done through groups of fifteen youth from across the nation, known as roundtables, which create presentations on topics like adolescent health, getting youth outdoors, workforce training, and texting while driving. I was a member of the roundtable presenting to the House Agriculture Committee about the importance of agriculture and 4-H to youth. We began our work on Sunday, and by Tuesday, we had a presentation ready to present to the leaders of our nation. Being a member of this roundtable gave me the opportunity to not only share my story, but also learn the stories of others, and the impact they are making on their communities. Creating relationships with 4-H members from across the country was perhaps my favorite part of the conference - valuing how we are different, but also bonding over our similarities. Oklahoma 4-H sends three or four members to National Conference each year - one member from each district. Because of the small group, I was able to establish strong friendships with the other members on the trip as we flew across the country, walked through snow to see the White House, visited with our Senators and Representatives, and cut loose at the closing dance. 4-H has provided me with many life changing opportunities over the years, and attending National 4-H Conference is one of my favorites. No other trip gives 4-Her s the chance to so directly impact the politics of our nation while making such strong relationships with one another. I am grateful for the opportunities 4-H has given me thus far and I am eager to see where else 4-H will take me. Audrey Ochsner State Service Project Books for kids We will be collecting NEW Children s Books for the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City. Spread the word so we can start collecting books and have a HUGE selection by State 4-H Roundup in July. Please bring the NEW books to the Payne County Extension Office.

2 ~FREEDOM 4-H CLUB 4-H CLUB SPOTLIGHT It has been an extremely busy spring for Freedom 4-H! Beginning in January, members participated in and won Grand Champion in Share the Fun held in Ripley. The skit was entitled The Outsiders. County officers from Freedom helped to emcee the event. Not to be left out, Cloverbuds performed 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. Freedom 4-H members Kate and Kara Wardlaw both participated in individual acts. After clinching the Grand Champion spot at County Share the Fun, Freedom will next perform their skit/compete at District Contest. Freedom members Delaney Corter and Kate Wardlaw also participated in the 4-H Marketplace. Freedom 4-H members sold Texas Roadhouse rolls during the holiday season to create revenue for their club. This fundraising effort helps the membership when they want to do any fun events or give anything extra towards community service efforts. Next up was the Payne County Livestock Show. Members helped to make chili and participated in a Food Safety Workshop to help prepare for the show. Members also helped man the concession stand at the county fair. Several members showed animals and won the following awards: Teegin Crosthwait Reserve Jersey, 6 th place Team Fitting, 1 st class Hereford, Ryne Crosthwait Reserve Holstein, Grand commercial Beef female, 5 th place Fitting Team, Lauren Crosthwait 2 nd class Jersey and Hereford and 6 th place Fitting Team. Johnny Prince placed 3 rd with his pig and goat and 8 th with his goat. Morgan Williams made the premium sale with her doe goat, 2 nd in class with her goat and reserve grand with her broilers. Johnny Prince and Ryne Crosthwait went to NE District Discovery Unlimited and Teegin Crosthwait served as a Teen Leader. Teegin Crosthwait served as a camp counselor for Special Clovers 4-H camp. Logan Drury and Delaney Corter presented educational programs to Twin Mounds 4-H at their March meeting. Logan presented a Trailer Safety checklist and Delaney presented nutrition on brand name vs. off-brand name foods. Delaney also went to the Zoo Snooze at the Oklahoma City Zoo. Participants stayed all night in a Tree House at the zoo. Teegin and Ryne Crosthwait and Morgan Williams won reserve champion for the senior team level at the Food Showdown. Members collected canned foods for the Salvation Army, but they are still in need of canned foods. A representative from the Salvation Army was present at the club s April meeting to present on the educational program. Logan Drury is collecting items for the Turning Point s annual Literacy Day. Items needed are: baggies, mini pretzels, baby carrots, apples or apple slices, puffed wheat cereal, shelled sunflower seeds, paper plates, and felt. -Logan Drury---Freedom 4-H Reporter Young Entrepreneur Expo The Young Entrepreneur Expo & Booth Display Competition will be Tuesday, June 5, 5-9 PM at the Payne County Expo Center. Contact Suzette Barta, for more information. Our featured speaker will be Alex Evers, Owner of Stillwater Martial Arts.

3 4-H CLUB SPOTLIGHT ~HERITAGE 4-H Interns from Our Daily Bread came to our March club meeting to tell us about poverty-stricken Oklahomans and their needs, and how Our Daily Bread is working to help them. Members also learned how 33% of Stillwater residents live below the poverty line and 18% of Payne County residents are food insecure. We had a great turnout at the Food Showdown. We had 2 senior teams and 1 junior team. One of our senior teams - Marissa Bensch, Kyla Langstraat, and Karly Walker - won Grand Champion by creating South of the Border Burgers with the secret ingredients they were given. Our junior team Emma Armstrong, Abby Logan, and Anna Cox won Grand Champion in their division as well. Our other senior team - Elisabeth Bensch, Heidi Rouser and Kirsten Rouser - also earned a blue ribbon. During Spring Break, Heritage 4-H members toured the Grey Snow Eagle Lodge. We learned about wildlife and Native American culture, and got to see some amazing eagles. One of our favorite spring activities includes participating in Lake McMurtry's Spring Celebration. This community event draws families to the lake for a day of fun activities. Wyatt Ringer, Audrey Ochsner and Caity and Samantha Wagner shared their 4-H project work through interactive games and crafts. This was a great opportunity to promote 4-H to our community. Kirsten Rouser, Heritage 4-H Reporter ~LEADERS OF TOMORROW 4-H The Leaders of Tomorrow have been really busy the last several months learning to be true leaders. In January, we had several members participate in Share the Fun as individuals and as a group. The group participants were Autumn Lindsley, Gabriella Edsall-Cruz, Jadyn Sims, and Tucker Moore and they had lots of fun working on and performing their skit The 4 Little 4-Hers. Share the Fun was lots of fun and there were some great skits. As a group we put together and donated a basket for Stillwater Livestock Boosters 4-H/ FFA club. It was used to help with future projects for the groups and was donated along with many other group s donated baskets that were used as part of the fundraiser. In February, several members participated in the county and state record book workshop. We also crafted cards at Joann s. We had a speaker on Technology at our meeting who talked about drones. Our service project was to donate items to help Sarah Walker make bags for Payne County Youth Services. We also took on informative tour of the OSU Student Union and the OSU Museum of Art located in the old Post Office building. In March, the charitable project was Operation Gratitude led by Tucker Moore to send care packages to U.S. military troops. Sarah Walker served as a Clover Buddy at Special Clovers 4-H Camp and we had a team of Autumn Lindsley, Abbey Lindsley, and Tucker Moore participate in the 4-H Food Showdown contest. So far, we are off to a great start for 2018! Gabriella Edsall-Cruz, Leaders of Tomorrow 4-H Reporter
