Emma Wittenauer (Clover Friends) shows off her Theater Arts project to judge Ashley Schneider and judge assistant Rose Anne Bense. Caleb Seboldt and Erin Halleran both of the Backyard Bandits 4-H Club participated in the 4-H Food Demonstration Show, held at the Monroe County Farm Bureau Women's Committee meeting on June 5. The Committee annually sponsors awards for youth who participate in the show, and utilize a specified commodity in their food demonstration. This year, the commodity was soy. Caleb demonstrated how to make pumpkin bread with soy oil and Erin showed the group how to make cookies with soy milk. Fifteen 4-H members participated in the 4-H Horse Show held in May at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Youth enrolled in a horse project have the choice to show a horse or exhibit an educational display at the 4-H Show-a-Rama. Congrats to all who participated in either show and continue to grow their knowledge in horses!

LIVESTOCK ALL Livestock Project Registration is due by June 28. Because this is the first year for registering projects online, we are not requiring livestock entries be made online, but you are welcome to do so. Alternatively, the livestock entry form can be printed from our website here: web.extension.illinois.edu/mms/downloads/69311.pdf If you enter livestock via paper form, it must be turned in on Livestock Entry night at the fairgrounds on June 28. Remember-this is for your 4-H project ONLY. OPEN AND JUNIOR entries for the fair must still be made on paper copy found in the Fair Book. REMINDER: 4-H member must adhere to the following rules in order to maintain active status and exhibit at a 4-H Project Show and sell and animal at the Livestock Auction Attend at least four 4-H meetings prior to a 4-H project show. Present a talk or demonstration at a club meeting prior to a 4-H project show.

4 Page 3 County Corner Monroe County Every 4-H member is responsible for working at least 2 hours. Club leaders will schedule you individually within the clubs time-frame. This shift covers your 4-H programming fee for the H year. Please contact the Extension office at if: You cannot work in your club s allotted time frame...we can schedule you with another group. You will be out of town during the entire week...we will work with you to help with an alternative activity to fulfill your responsibilities. You do not have a pass or are unable to pay the gate fee to enter the fairgrounds during your scheduled work time...there will be a limited number of passes to borrow from the Extension office. *Please call to confirm a pass at least 2 days in advance during office business hours from 8:00am-4:30pm. 5 Page 4 County Corner Monroe County The Monroe Mechanics 4-H Robotics Club had a fun year developing their engineering and mechanical skills creating things from the 4-H Junk Drawer Robotics curriculum. The members met monthly throughout the school year and will resume again this fall and will continue using the Junk Drawer Robotics activities. Anyone wishing to join can contact the Extension office in September to enroll. WANTED: Volunteers are needed for an additional Robotics Club that includes robotic programming (i.e Lego technologies) for any youth that may be interested in learning more about that aspect of Robotics. 6 Page 4 County Corner Monroe County DON T FORGET! Treasurer Books and Secretary Books are due September 15! Treasurer Books MUST be signed by the treasurer and audited/signed by 3 additional people. These books must be turned into your leader for their review and signature. The MC Farm Bureau Women s Committee serves breakfast at the fair for livestock exhibitors and families, fair board members, superintendents and clean up crew. Breakfast is served in the east end of the Fine Arts building (enter from the east side door) Breakfast served: Monday-Friday: 6:30 to 8:30 am Milk, juice and coffee each morning. Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Scrambled Eggs, Sausage Patties, Toast, Fruit Pancakes, Sausage Patties, Fruit Scrambled Eggs, Sausage Patties, Tator Tots, Toast, Fruit Scrambled Eggs, Sausage Patties, Pancakes, Toast, Fruit Scrambled Eggs, Sausage Patties, Biscuits & Gravy, Fruit There is not a set price, we just ask for a donation. Generosity is one of the essential elements of Positive Youth Development in 4-H and can be expressed in the form of Community Service. Clubs and members are encouraged to take part in community service as we enter the summer months. Please consider taking part in one of the following: Cookies for Lunches & Books to Read! The House of Neighborly Service is hosting a summer lunch program for Monroe County youth. They will be distributing lunches throughout the area to youth who need a lunch during the summer. They are in need of home-made COOKIES that they can freeze and have on hand to include with the lunches. They also plan to have a trailer full of games, activities and a library for youth as well and are in need of gently used BOOKS. Donations can be dropped of at HSN at: 227b South Main Street, Waterloo. Please contact Jan Dudley at if you have any questions. Fair Clean-up Bushy Prairie 4-H Club is continuing their tradition of picking up trash on mornings of the Fair. However, they are in desparate need of HELP! Their dedicated service to the fair begins at 6am beginning on Monday morning. The more people that help, the faster the job gets accomplished. Gloves, trashbags and breakfast areprovided to those that help. In addition, a monetary donation will be given to your club for helping. Please contact Kelly at the Extension office if your club is interested. Congratulations to Joe & Sharon Marquardt H Hall of Fame Nominees! The Illinois 4-H Foundation will honor outstanding volunteers at a gathering Saturday, Aug. 12 in the Orr Building of the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. This year, Joe & Sharon Marquardt of Valmeyer will be inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame at this ceremony.

7 Page 7 State/Regional Events Monroe County Your day at the Illinois State Fair If you are selected as our county s representative at the state fair, here s what you need to know: The county office will mail you more information after our local show, as well as an exhibit tag for your project. Remove all the tags and ribbons from our local show. Our county exhibits on Sunday, August H members should plan to arrive in Springfield at the fairgrounds between 8 and 9:30 a.m. Traffic can be very busy, so give yourself plenty of time. We know that delays happen, so if you get stuck in traffic, don t worry. We will do our best to accommodate late arrivals. Once on the fairgrounds, make your way the far west side of the fairgrounds. At the Orr Building. 4-H members should drop their projects off at the table for their project area between 8 and 9:30 a.m. Then, check the master schedule to see what time YOUR conference judging begins. Everyone will have at least a 10-minute judging time to discuss your project with a judge. Return to your judging area about 10 minutes before your scheduled time. Your project will remain on display until 3:30 that day. Be sure to come back and pick it up before 4:30 closing time. If you are registered in Fashion Revue, you don t need to arrive until 12:30 p.m. Be dressed and stage-ready by 1:30. The Fashion Revue begins at 2 p.m. Come back for the 4-H Clover Celebration at 3 p.m. No projects may be removed from the judging area until 3:30 p.m. It s the rule, so follow it! If you need to leave early, please arrange with someone else from your county to pick up your project. Be sure to give them your claim ticket. There will be lots of other fun things to do in the Orr Building. NO advanced State Fair admission or parking passes will be available through the Extension Office this year. Tickets may be purchased at the gate. State Fair has a limited number of Load/Unload passes available from your local Extension office to 4-H families which will allow cars to enter through Gate 8 (or other gate if that is closed) and drive to the Orr Building to drop off exhibits or people. You will need to present your admission tickets for anyone in the car upon entering the fairgrounds; then the driver will need to leave through Gate 9 immediately after drop off, GET THEIR HAND STAMPED FOR READMISSION to the fair, and then re-enter the fairgrounds through the gate for which they have a parking pass. You MUST have a regular parking pass to use the Load/Unload Pass. Understanding 4-H Premiums In the past, the Illinois Department of Ag has provided funds to local Illinois 4-H members in the forms of premiums (cash prizes) for participation in 4-H shows and exhibitions. We currently have no guarantee that those funds will be provided. We treasure each of our 4-H families and know that you make a financial investment in your 4-H project work. We hope you continue to take pride in your 4-H learning and continue to participate fully in the 4-H program. As you are aware, we have no control on the actions of Illinois government.

8 Page 6 State/Regional Events Monroe County State Fair Junior Show Livestock Entries Due July 1 The Illinois State Fair sponsors a junior livestock show which is open to 4-H and FFA members only. Entry deadline is July 1 and your entries must be signed either by 4-H or FFA staff. 4-H is proud to support the Illinois State Fair in this event. All questions about the show should be directed to the Illinois State Fair. Learn more and download entry forms and click on COMPETITIONS. The Junior Livestock Department has extended its age to 21. Since 4-H age ends at 18, the only way to exhibit at the state fair junior livestock show if you are 19 to 21 is to be an active FFA members as verified by Illinois FFA and in accordance with one of the following program options: Win $1,000 through the State Superior Young Producer Program The Superior Young Producer Scholarship Program is offered by the Illinois State Fair to 4-H members in Beef, Sheep, Swine, Dairy, and Horses as an educational activity at the Illinois State Fair to promote youth development and personal growth. NEW IN 2017 Three $1,000 scholarships will be provided in horses and three $1,000 scholarships will be provided in dairy. A total of nine $1,000 scholarships will be provided in a combined contest for beef, sheep, and swine contestants. Maintain active membership on the roster of their local high school FFA Chapter; Maintain active membership in a collegiate FFA Chapter in a postsecondary institution of higher education in the State of Illinois; or Maintain active membership in an Illinois FFA Alumni Chapter. Contest Dates: Horse will be July 19; Dairy will be Aug. 19; Combined Beef/Sheep/Swine will be Aug. 9. The SYPA contest is open to any youth 14 years of age or older (on Jan. 1, 2017) who are current Illinois 4-H members who are enrolled in that project. Participants do not have to be exhibiting animals at the Illinois State Fair in order to participate in the SYPA contest. Entries are requested prior to the State Fair Junior Shows and available at the Illinois State Fair website. A participant may receive only one scholarship throughout their career. Further, after receiving a scholarship in any of the specie award areas, the eligible 4-H member may participate in other specie award programs in following years but will be eligible to receive phase awards only. In order to receive a scholarship, the 4-H post-secondary trade school, or advanced educational program. Be Published in Farm Credit Illinois 2018 Calendar Do you love photography? Farm Credit Illinois is looking for amazing photos showing agriculture and rural life at its best. Each photographer may enter up to five photos. Learn Deadline is Aug. 24.

9 Page 5 Regional/State Events Monroe County 2018 Salute to Excellence 4-H Volunteer Awards The Illinois 4-H program is built on the work of amazing volunteers, and we look forward to recognizing our volunteers for what they do! The National 4-H Council sponsors the Salute to Excellence Award Program that targets 4-H volunteers who demonstrate exemplary service to 4-H, while promoting service through volunteerism as both an opportunity and a privilege. Outstanding local volunteers can be nominated for consideration as the 2018 Illinois Salute to Excellence Volunteer. If you are interested in nominating a volunteer for consideration, contact your extension office. The award categories are: Volunteer of the Year recognizing individuals who have served as 4-H volunteers for less than 10 years at the local, county, region, and state level. Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer recognizing individuals who have served 10 or more years at the local, county, region or state level. Nomination criteria will be available at your local Extension Office and are due to the State 4-H Office by Thursday, September 21, Teen Leaders WE NEED YOU! We are still seeking Illinois 4-H Teen Leaders to apply for the Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team! Applications are being accepted this summer for 2-year terms starting on September 1, The application is Applicants must be years of age by September 1, 2017 in order to apply. This team of 22 4-H members and recent 4-H alumni serve in a variety of leadership capacities during their tenure. They are responsible for the planning and implementation of the Illinois 4-H Jr. Leadership Conference and Speaking for Illinois 4-H programs. Members provide youth voice on several statewide committees and assist at a variety of statewide activities throughout the year. Team members also have the first opportunity to apply to attend National 4-H Conference. We will be interviewing for a minimum of six new members. Applications are due July 31 for required interviews at the Illinois State Fair. Check us out now and apply to become a member of this statewide 4-H leadership team! Everyone Loves a Road Trip! September 23, University of Illinois Campus Come hang out with 4-H members from across the state in a NEW event to kick off the new year. Save September 23 and plan to arrive by 10 a.m. on the University of Illinois campus. Get an inside look at U of I. Discover new things you can do in 4-H.
