2 FSQA Training Dates What: Food Safety Quality Assurance Training Who: All 4-H rs exhibiting meat animals at fair (this includes beef, dairy/meat goat, poultry, rabbit, sheep, and swine projects) are required to be FSQA certified by July 1, th graders must attend the face-to-face training annually. 7-19th graders must either attend training annually, or take an exam certification that is good until next age level th graders must either attend training annually, or take exam certification that is good through end of 4-H enrollment. When: 4-H er may attend any county s FSQA training. Please notify both your home county and the county hosting the training that you are attending. Registration is recommended. Here is a list of nearby trainings: All ages are welcome at each training. Parents are encouraged to attend with youth. February 13th: Testing to begin at 5 PM, training will be 6-8 PM at a the Armstrong Research Farm in Lewis. Contact East Pott county at or kwede@iastate.edu to register. March 25th: Testing to begin at 10 AM, training will be 1:30-4 PM in Sidney. Contact Fremont County at or caseyw@iastate.edu to register. April 17th: Testing to begin at 5 PM, training will be 6-8 PM at the Cass County Community Center in Atlantic. Contact to register. Show Cattle Demo by Kirk Stierwalt Honor Show Chow expert/ambassador Kirk Stierwalt will be doing a one night Show Cattle Demo in Red Oak on March 8th at 2005 Fernwood Ave. Supper will begin at 5:30PM. Contact UFC Red Oak for further details ext. 3. This is a great opportunity for all 4-H ers interested in showing cattle, we encourage you to attend! 2

3 Swine Weigh In Swine weigh In will be Saturday, March 18th at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds from 9am 11am. Don t forget that exhibitors will be required to show 1 derby pig and must weigh in at least one on March 18th. Only pigs weighed in will be eligible for the Derby show. Maximum weight for pigs on Saturday March 18th will be 70lbs and exhibitors may weigh in or identify up to 12 pigs each. We encourage you to weigh them all in, but the hogs you select to bring to county fair must be verified in 4honline by May 15th, **If you plan to nominate swine for the Iowa State Fair or Aksarben you will be required to contact the Extension Office by March 3rd! If you would like to show broiler chickens at the county fair, get your chicks ordered today! All broilers shown at fair must be purchased through the extension office. Order forms & payment will be due to the Extension Office by March 6th at 12 noon! Chicks will cost $2.75 each, they will all be males that are vaccinated for Marek s Disease and Coccidiosis and will plan to arrive one of the last eight days of May. ALL chicks must be picked up at the Extension Office the day of arrival! It is recommended to order 6-10 birds per exhibitor. Horse Project Meeting On February 19th, all horse project members, families and anyone interested in the horse project are invited to learn about our Horsin Around group! 4 8th Annual 4H 4H Night with the Omaha Lancers on February 17th, 2017! Order online at: We are excited for you to join us on Friday, February the Ralston Arena for 4H Night with the Lancers! The Lancers take on Chicago and puck drop is at 7:05 PM. You have the opportunity to purchase $12 tickets and $5 meals in advance. Deadline to purchase Friday, February 11 AM, and if I do not have your order by then, you will not be able to take advantage of this FUN event! Seating is limited, so please purchase your seats NOW and thank you for being a part of 4H! Attendees do not have to be 4-H members, anyone can purchase through the link! 7 Additional 4-H Opportunities: Animal Science Round-Up Attention 7-12 grade Animal Science Enthusiasts! Are you interested in learning more about animal science, meeting new friends, doing hands on activities and attending the largest state-wide 4-H conference in the Iowa State University campus June 27-29? Animal Science Round-Up is for you! Participants will choose from 5 different interest tracks, beef, sheep, swine, dairy cattle and horse. Youth will explore careers, conduct live animal evaluations, media training, ISU Farm Tours, and much more! Applications to attend must be submitted online by March 1. March 24-26, 2017, Ellsworth Equestrian Center, Iowa Falls Friday, March 24 Horse Quiz Bowl Saturday, March 25 Hippology, Horseless Horse events and Trail Clinic Sunday, March 26 Horse Judging and Model Horse There are opportunities for both teams and individual competition and learning. Rules and more information can be found at This will be updated by January 1, Quiz bowl - The State 4-H Horse Bowl is a quiz contest made up of questions pertaining to horse topics. Pairs of four-person teams compete against each other responding to questions asked by a contest moderator. Each team is given credit for correct answers, and in some cases a penalty for incorrect answers. The team with the highest score at the end of the contest is declared the winner. Hippology - Hippology is an activity that can enhance learning for 4-H members by letting them exhibit their knowledge and understanding of equine science and husbandry in a competitive setting. The term "Hippology" comes from the Greek "hippo", meaning horse, and "ology", meaning "the study of". Participants will be able to demonstrate their experience and knowledge gained in horse judging, quiz bowl, speeches, and practical horse management. Phases of the contest include a written exam, identification of items shown on slides, placing and/or ID of feedstuffs or feed tags, judging, ID stations, and team problems. Horse Judging - In Horse Judging, youth learn to evaluate a horse's form as it relates to function, and compare it to the ideal as well as to other horses. The added benefit is that it gives youth the opportunity to sharpen their decision making skills and their ability to defend those decisions. Contact Michala Stull or mskitty98@gmail.com 2017 Meat Goat Extravaganza Saturday April 29th, 2017, the Tall Corn Meat Goat Wether Assoc. will host its 11th annual Goat Extravaganza at the Poweshiek County Fairgrounds. Registration will be at 8:30 am. Featuring two of the most respected Breeders and judges in the Country. Come learn about the Boer Goat. Learn how to develop an analytical eye, what the Ideal Boer Goat should look, Identify characteristics of potential herd sires at a very young age and a hands-on evaluation of Boer goats. 7

8 Lincoln Hustlers January 2017 Reporter s Report The Lincoln Hustlers 4-H Club meeting was called to order on January 8, 2017 at 5:00 P.M. by President Luke Mellott in the Montgomery County Extension Office. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Cloie Bruce. Rollcall was What are you looking forward to this year? and was answered by 15 members. One guest and 3 leaders were present. The minutes from our last meeting were read by Mason Perkins. Cole Carlson made a motion and Cam Pryor seconded the minutes the vote was passed. The Treasurers report was given by Tristan Wolfe. A motion to approve the Treasurers report was made by Cole Carlson and seconded by Cam Pryor. Old Business: There was no old business. New Business: 4-H scholarships and State 4-H Recognition applications are due February 1 st, H night at the Lancers is February 17 th at the Ralston s arena. The ticket deadline is February 10 th at 11 AM. You can get reduced priced tickets for groups of 10 plus, to the World s Toughest Rodeo. You can also get reduced tickets for certain Sundays for groups of at least 8 at Seven Oaks. The 2017 Equine Extravaganza is March th. There is a STEM Club being started for 4 th -6 th graders. It starts Wednesday January 25 th and it will be every Wednesday for 5 weeks. 4-H Pledge was led by Johnathan Perkins. Leader announcements were made. Club shirts were delivered. Fair premium money was passed out. The meeting was motioned to adjourn by Mason Perkins and seconded by Cole Carlson.
