1 2018, June 20 th ' Hello Everyone, Social-Emotional Focus Dealing with other people s anger When someone is angry with you, it s easy to become angry yourself. But it s important to remain calm, listen to what the person is saying, respond in a quiet voice, and even try to negotiate or explain your point of view. Wait until the person is finished talking and ask why he is angry. Doing that will help him sort out his feelings, and he may even find that he s not really angry with you maybe he s just taking his anger out on you. But what if he is actually angry with you? After listening to his answer you can either apologize (if you agree that you did something wrong) or talk about what happened and give your point of view (if you don t agree). If you find yourself losing control and becoming angry, you should walk away for a while, saying something like We re both angry now. Let s talk about this later. Report Cards Report cards will be sent out next week (week 11). If you have any questions about the comments on the report card, please feel free to organise a meeting time with your child s teacher in term 3. Arts Council Visit On Monday we are having a visit from the Arts Council with the performance Let s Stamp Out Bullying. They will be visiting the Range Campus in the morning and the Main Campus in the afternoon. 5/6 Class This semester, our class has done many subjects with fun and interesting assessments. We did Science experiments and heaps of other cool things. In term 1, for Science we had to create a creature with adaptations that are influenced by its given environment and we learnt how craters were made on the moon. We did an experiment with plain flour, glitter and cocoa powder to form a crater. In Term 2, we learnt about space and had fun with air rockets. In Media, we had to make a stop motion animation with an ethical dilemma. In English we also learnt about ethical dilemmas and wrote a script. We read the first book of The Deltora Quest series (The Forest of Silence). The hardest part of this Semester was losing Mrs Jo Tromba, but now the 5/6 class has a new teacher, Mrs Froukje Neilsen. We also welcomed our new students, Xy and Abbie. 2 . P&C NEWS Blue Mountain Campdraft 2018 This year the Campdraft will be on the 17 th, 18 th and 19 th of August. It is held at the Blue Mountain Campdraft Grounds, Strathdale, 827 Blue Mountain Road, Sarina Range, approximately one hour from Swayneville travelling through Koumala and over the Koumala Range. For our new families who may be unaware, the catering for this event is the major school fundraiser for the year. Swayneville P&C runs the canteen and provides all meals for competitors and spectators from Friday night through to Sunday afternoon. Over the last few years we have raised over $ for our school, and gained an excellent reputation amongst the local campdraft community as having delicious, value for money, home cooked meals on offer over the weekend. There are many ways in which you can support this event: 1. Provide a hot meal for Friday night - slow cooked meals (eg. honey mustard chicken, curried sausages, beef stroganoff) are served on the Friday night. In recent years, families have provided the meal in a slow cooker to the school by 3pm on the Friday, which is then taken to the campdraft grounds. All slow cookers are returned to the school the following week. 2. Provide a homemade lasagne for Saturday night - these are served on the Saturday night, as part of our Italian night. Best pre-cooked in a disposable foil tray, and bought to the school by 3pm on the Friday. 3. Provide baking for sweets and desserts - your choice of hot/cold dessert (eg. apple crumble, sticky date pudding, cheesecakes, trifle) and any smoko delights (eg. biscuits, slices, cakes). Gluten free options are more than welcome. 4. Roster on to work a shift at the event - there s something to suit everyone from cooking on the BBQ, serving out front, prepping food in the camp kitchen, or (everyone s favourites) the till and washing up. Teams of 8-10 volunteers are rostered on each shift for approximately 5 hours. There are camping facilities on site for those of you that may like to camp the night, with toilets and hot showers available. Those who have camped each year have had a great time and the children thoroughly enjoyed the weekend as well. 5. Donate non-perishable goods to help with the catering through the Campdraft Fever donation drive - this starts on the first day of term three, and runs until the 3 rd of August. Each classroom is given a basket and list of shopping items to gather. For as little as $1, you can purchase an item or two in your weekly shop, and help your child s class be the first to fill their basket. Items include baked beans, rice, beetroot, poppers, alfoil and much more. 6. Donate cash to purchase perishable items for the weekend - bread and buns, eggs and bacon, meat and frozen items are also sourced for the weekend. By making a cash donation which can be put towards these items, you are helping to greatly increase our profits. You are most welcome to return your form and your donation in an envelope to the school office (please label as Campdraft donation ). Please complete the attached form and return to the office (or by ) before the school holidays, indicating how your family can contribute to this venture. In recent years, the generosity of families has been overwhelming, and every effort made by the whole school community goes a long way to the P&C being able to support our school and students. 4 Competition Winners! Our Range campus had a lovely surprise on Monday from the Sarina Woolworth manager Micheal Hammill. He brought up the prize for the winners of the colouring in competition, the McFadzen children- Fletcher, Lawson Reina and Lauren. They won a large box of delicious fresh fruit! Anger doesn t solve anything, it builds nothing, but can destroy everything (Thomas S Monson) Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than on anything on which it is poured. (Mark Twain) Anger can be overwhelming and may cause you to lash out to punish or cause pain to others. Unbridled anger is like a fire. It is hot, fierce and can consume all in its path Anger stirs up strife and the wise person holds it back. Be slow to anger and recognize when the wick has been lit so you can put it out quickly. It saves cleaning up the mess after the explosion. Anger makes you smaller while forgiveness makes you grow beyond what you were. The father had recently bought a car and spent his spare time driving and caring for the car. His son wanted to play with his father but his dad said he was too busy. The son picked up a sharp stone and started to write something on the paintwork of the car. Seeing this the father lashed out at his son striking him to the ground. As he picked the child up to take him inside he saw what his son had scratched in the paintwork. The child had written I love you Dad with a big heart. The father was devastated by his own actions.
